J.A.M. Shines the Spotlight on High School Jazz

Students performing finale at the 2016 JAM.

Minneapolis Public Schools and Jazz88 present the third annual J.A.M. (Jazz Around Minneapolis) Fall Festival. This year’s concert presents the St. Olaf Jazz 1 Band featuring Dave Hagedorn. The concert will be a culmination of a full day of jazz workshops for high school students facilitated by MPS band teachers Dave Hagedorn, Chris Bates and other professional jazz musicians.  This year’s event will be held at the South High School auditorium, 3131 S 19th Ave, Minneapolis on November 3rd at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door.

The workshop will showcase students’ talent in jazz and help them develop their performance skills and abilities in music as a whole. All the student musicians will have an opportunity to perform during the concert. Students from seven Minneapolis public high schools will be involved: South, Southwest, Washburn, Edison, Roosevelt, Patrick Henry and North. The concert will be broadcast live on Jazz88’s Minnesota Jazz Tracks Web channel, and recorded for later broadcast on Jazz88’s Jazz at MPS program, heard on Monday nights at 8 p.m.

Interview with Eric Sayre, band director from South High School, originally aired November 2nd on the Morning Show with Emily Reese.

JAM is funded by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
