Join Us to Honor Four Jazz Legends on April 2

Make Minnesota Jazz Legends part of your Jazz Appreciation Month observance this year. We’ll honor four of Minnesota’s notable and long-serving jazz legends in a concert and conversation event hosted by Jazz88 host, Patty Peterson. It will be an intimate afternoon of live music and inspiring stories. Presented by Jazz88, this special concert will be held at the Minnesota History Center on Sunday, April 2, 2023, 2:00-4:00pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 ages 5-17 and can be purchased online or by phone at (651) 259-3015. MNHS members and Jazz88 listener members can save 20% by entering code “Jazz88” at checkout.

Audiences will hear words and music from four Twin Cities jazz legends who have achieved local and national acclaim. This year’s honorees include music educator, arranger, and composer, Denny Malmberg (piano, accordion, bass), professor, composer, sculptor, and Arawak Records founder, Douglas Ewart (saxophone, flute), award-winning composer and educator, Joan Griffith (guitar, bass, mandolin), and A Prairie Home Companion musician and Jazz88 radio host, the late Butch Thompson (piano, clarinet).

These jazz legends will perform music they love and talk about how their individual journeys have become part of Minnesota’s musical history. The legends are accompanied by the Phil Aaron Trio, featuring Phil Aaron (piano), Anthony Cox (bass), and Phil Hey (drums).

On the subject of her curation of this project, Peterson said, “I love being a part of preserving the history of jazz in Minnesota, and presenting these artists is proof that this art form is still very much alive and thriving here.”

This performance will be recorded for a later broadcast. It will also be archived for on demand listening at Jazz88.fm.

This program is made possible through funding provided by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
