Student Programming

North High School On the Air

  • The North Academy of Arts & Communications (NAAC) engages students as they study humanities and the sciences through the vehicle of the arts. Fine arts are studied in depth from six disciplines: dance; instrumental and vocal music; radio broadcasting; theater and public speaking; and digital music and video production.
  • Students at North may choose the radio broadcast program throughout their four years as an elective.
  • This course provides students the opportunity to broadcast live or voice-track 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday. Students learn a variety of skills, including writing, researching, recording, mixing and editing audio files and students gain a sense of accomplishment and confidence. To quote a former student: “I learned how to communicate with people.”
  • Project-based learning helps students hone communication and team building skills.

School News

    • Jazz88 produces School News, a series of brief reports from Minneapolis Public Schools.
    • K-12 students write and voice thirty-second news reports about what is happening at their school, from learning multiplication tables to restoring classic cars.
    • School News airs weekdays, once an hour from 9:49 a.m.  to 2:49 p.m.

Student Involvement

    • Students from schools throughout the district are eligible for service credits through after-school programs.
    • During the summer, several paid student interns work at Jazz88 in advanced media production as well as intensive specialized studies with staff mentors in electronics, music programming and station management. Jazz88 works with Step-Up/Achieve to hire students from Minneapolis.
