Groucho and Eliot were pen pals? You bet your life they were. Watch the sparks fly when two 20th century titans sit down for dinner. It started with a fan letter. It ended with “never meet your heroes.”

Groucho Marx Meets T.S. Eliot is a theatrical exploration of the unlikely dinner conversation that took place in 1964 between the iconic comedian Groucho Marx, played by Jim Cunningham, and the celebrated poet T.S. Eliot, portrayed by John Middleton. The play, written by Jeffrey Hatcher with Creative Consultant Evan Hatcher, delves into their dialogue on diverse topics such as poetry, vaudeville, and the essence of creativity.

Directed by Michael Robins, this production brings to life the fascinating dynamics between two cultural giants. Groucho Marx, starred inAnimal Crackers, Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera, and You Bet Your Life, was a pen pal with T.S. Eliot, the author ofThe Waste Land, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Cocktail Party, andMurder in the Cathedral.
In 1994 ILLUSION produced Jeffrey Hatcher’s Three Viewings, which has gone on to be produced around the country and overseas. Since that first outing with Jeffrey, ILLUSION has commissioned/produced a total of eleven of his plays includingNo Strings (1996), his adaptation of Henry James’s Turn of the Screw (1998),Good N’ Plenty (2001), Murderers (2005), Mercy of a Storm (2003),Mrs. Mannerly (2008), What’s the Word For (2012), Jeffrey Hatcher’s Hamlet (2014),A Night in Olympus (2016), and Netherland (2019).
