DESCRIPTION:It was in late 2022 that Jarrod Lawson had the biggest\, and most unexpected\, thrill of his music career. He had just received a glowing endorsement in print from Michelle Obama\, in an Entertainment Weekly interview. When asked who she was listening to\, after mentioning Beyonce\, added “There’s this young jazz\, blue-eyed soul kid Jarrod Lawson that I’m loving.” \nAt the time Jarrod was receiving major airplay in the U.S. and in Europe. Here\, this was largely due to his remake of the Isley Brothers Seventies classic “Footsteps In The Dark”. This followed his 2020 sophomore album Be the Change. That album made its mark immediately\, with entries at #1 on Amazon’s Jazz Albums chart and at #2 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. \nFor singer/songwriter/keyboardist Lawson\, the appreciation of his music in his native U.S. was particularly gratifying. His 2014 breakthrough had been primarily in Europe\, where in a whirlwind couple of years he played festival\, club and concert dates in fifteen countries. Additionally\, this included the North Sea Jazz Festival\, London Jazz Festival and the world-renowned Ronnie Scott’s Club. Furthermore\, he powered his way into the Dutch Top Forty Albums chart. \nHe has since performed around the world in Tokyo\, Beijing\, Melbourne and at Indonesia’s Java Jazz festival. Further\, in the U.S. he has performed at many of the leading jazz venues from New York to Seattle. \nThe album is a beautiful\, restrained\, dreamy mix of love songs\, irreverence and social commentary. Thus\, SoulTracks.com described the album as “a masterpiece”. Also\, they hailed it “an instant classic that would have fit just as comfortably in 1970 as it does in 2020”.

Kavyesh graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2018\, with a Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Jazz Studies. In 2019\, Kavyesh received a full tuition grant to pursue a Masters’ degree at Berklee College’s Global Jazz Institute\, where he was under the eminent tutelage of jazz masters\, such as Danilo Perez\, Kenny Werner and JoAnne Brackeen. He graduated in 2020 with a Master of Music (MM) degree in Contemporary Performance. His passionate and considerate nature has served him well as both a private instructor and college professor on the faculty of University of St. Thomas and visiting instructor at Carleton College and Walker West Music Academy. His work in music education has taken him across the country\, leading workshops and classes\, and his compositions and arrangements have been featured on national radio\, TV and in collaborative exhibitions.

He has performed at the Guthrie Theater\, Ordway Center\, Illusion\, and Penumbra Theatre\, and has been a featured performer at Lincoln Center\, Juilliard\, Boston Symphony Hall\, The Blue Note\, Birdland\, and as a member of Moore By Four\, toured and played festivals in Umbria (Italy)\, Espoo (Finland)\, and Tejo (Portugal). DESCRIPTION:Gospel and blues\, melodic sensibility\, and honest emotion… \nBased in Minnesota\, with roots in Tennessee\, Chastity Brown grew up surrounded by country and soul music. In the gospel church of her childhood\, she played saxophone and drums. Also\, she found her singing voice and a passion for music. NPR’s “Favorite Sessions\,” CMT\, American Songwriter\, the London Times and Paste Magazine have all featured her. \nLike so many artists who endured the uncertainty of the 2020 lockdown\, Chastity instinctively turned inward. At first\, she did this out of self-preservation\, and then the new songs kept coming and coming. Since finishing her last album\, 2017’s Silhouette Of Sirens\, she estimates she’s written nearly 100 new songs. The band released their first studio album in 2022\, entitled “It Wasn’t About The Money”. One of the founding members\, Tom Peschges\, has just finished recording a solo project called “Born at the End of the Line” which features all of the Daredevils as well\, due to be released in April 2026. Each of the members contribute to a vast amount of experience spanning decades before the group came together. Phil Nusbaum\, the groups banjo player\, is the longtime host of the Bluegrass Saturday Morning Radio program on KBEM (Jazz88.fm).

DESCRIPTION:Martin Dosh and JT Bates have been exploring rhythms in tandem since the turn of the century\, drawing from shared influences of all areas of jazz music\, pocket drumming\, and sampling/collage music. \n✧ \nGrowing up in a musical family gave JT Bates an early start into sound and rhythmic exploration. He set on the path to becoming a working musician while playing in his father’s big band as a teen. Over the years\, he remained steeped in the improvised music scene\, both as a performer and presenter. In 2015\, he produced and released his first solo album\, Open Relationships (Totally Gross National Product)\, and in 2021\, he released an album called Not Other Stuff. As a session drummer\, Bates has appeared on Grammy record of the year Folklore (Taylor Swift) and Swift’s follow-up album\, Evermore. He has also performed on the Grammy-nominated album s/t (Bonny Light Horseman) and critically acclaimed records by Bon Iver\, Big Red Machine\, Cassandra Jenkins\, The National\, Maya Hawke\, and Ed Sheeran. \nMartin Dosh has been making independent music out of his basement in Minneapolis—and around the world—for 20 years. He first found acclaim with his self-titled debut on Anticon in 2003. As he continued making Dosh records\, of which there are many\, he also played and recorded with Andrew Bird from 2005 to 2014. His live performances are often solo\, combining drums\, samplers\, synths\, and Rhodes. One of the earliest pioneers of live looping\, he continues to record and perform\, layering melodies and drones over acoustic and electronic beats. His latest LP\, Tomorrow 1972\, features Jeff Parker and Dan Bitney (Tortoise)\, Bird\, Mike Lewis (Bon Iver\, Happy Apple)\, Tobacco\, The Nunnery\, and many others. He has opened shows for the likes of Sylvan Esso\, Tune-Yards\, Black Moth Super Rainbow\, Makaya McCraven\, and Death Grips. His music is hard to pin down: a genreless\, percussive hybrid of electronic\, hip-hop\, and jazz.

While living in Detroit\, he previously played with Earl Klugh\, Phyllis Hyman and Marcus Belgrade. \nMichael Pilhofer has been a top call drummer in the Twin Cities for over 30 years. \nPhil Kadidlo on piano and keyboards has accompanied many local artists including Prudence Johnson\, Bruce Henry\, Patty Peterson and Wayne Anthony. \nJudi Vinar has been been singing in the Twin Cities since 1989\, including regular appearances with the Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra\, JazzMN Orchestra\, Lori Dokken presentations\, The Girls\, and most recently with acclaimed guitarists Pat Donohue and Dean Magraw. She has toured internationally with Bobby McFerrin as a member of “Voicestra” and “Gimme5” since 2001.

You can hear the fruits of such work in the expressive language The Cookers bring to the bandstand. This exciting all-star septet summons an aggressive mid ‘60s spirit with a potent collection of expansive post-bop originals. Additionally\, they have the requisite killer instincts and pyrotechnic playing expected of some of the heaviest hitters today. \nBilly Harper\, Cecil McBee\, George Cables\, Eddie Henderson\, and Billy Hart started in the heady era of the mid ‘60s. There\, that period found the dimensions of hard bop morphing from their original designs. Furthermore\, each artist helped facilitate the process as members of some of the most important bands of the era. Hart and Henderson were members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group. And\, Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s great ’60s quartet alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Billy Harper was part of Lee Morgan’s last group\, and also Max Roach’s Quartet and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Further\, George Cables was featured in groups led by Sonny Rollins\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper. \nDavid Weiss and Donald Harrison are from a more recent generation and are the youngest members of the band. There\, they gained experience performing with Art Blakey\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Charles Tolliver\, Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock.

DESCRIPTION:Resonance: A David Feily Release Residency explores how new music comes alive in real time. On three Sundays in February\, live shows will coincide with the release of brand-new recordings from top Twin Cities guitarist David Feily. Each release and corresponding show will highlight Feily as a composer\, bandleader\, guitarist\, and improviser and display how his own sound resonates within collaborative ensembles. \nMinneapolis String Project deviates from the standard repertoire for bowed stringed instruments with their original sound drawing from jazz\, fusion\, soul\, and an array of world music influences. Week 1 of the residency will celebrate the release of their original tune “Flight Time\,” which was composed by Feily for this ensemble specifically to help their style and sound emerge. The group will be joined by drummer Miguel Hurtado. \nCurrent students may use the promo code STUDENT to purchase $15 tickets. Student IDs must be presented at the door. Berlin is 18+. \nBand Members:\nErnest Bisong – Violin\nGreg Byers – Cello\nDavid Feily – Guitar\nMiguel Hurtado – Drums \n⊹ \nErnest Bisong was introduced to the violin at the age of nine in his home country of Nigeria. He has since studied with several notable tutors and performers from around the world\, including Rachel Barton-Pine (American violinist)\, Sir Godfrey Amoah (Ghanaian violinist)\, Louis Jones (British violinist)\, Agnes Nagy (Hungarian cellist)\, and Thomas Kanitz (cellist of the Reger String Quartet and Dortmund Symphony Orchestra). After studying mainstream classical music\, Bisong found an appreciation for more contemporary musical styles and thus began an exploration of the jazz genre. In 2011\, he performed at the African Leadership Conference in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia with the illustrious Bez. In 2012\, he was on the Nigerian contingent to perform at the African Showcase of South by Southwest in Austin\, TX. In 2013\, Bisong became the first Nigerian to obtain performance diploma certification from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in London with a distinction. In the maiden edition of Venture Career Journal Nigeria released that same year\, he was referred to as “arguably Africa’s foremost contemporary violinist.” He has opened for such acts as Richard Bona\, Mike Stern\, Marcus Johnson\, Marsha Ambrosius\, and Anita Baker. \nIn his lifelong pursuit of music\, Greg Byers has overcome countless obstacles in order to become an idiosyncratic performer\, composer\, educator\, and producer. Byers started playing cello at the Family Suzuki School in Rochester\, NY\, at age 2.5. By age 16\, he was a talented cellist but was frustrated with the lack of personal expression he found in youth orchestras. This led Byers to explore the possibilities of the cello in a jazz context. At the University of Miami\, he became the first person to double major in instrumental performance/studio music and jazz on cello and bass\, summa cum laude. After participating in the Miami and Los Angeles music scenes\, Byers released his debut EP\, Some Dark\, Beautiful Morning\, and decided to continue his higher learning at McNally Smith College of Music in Saint Paul\, where he earned a Master of Music Performance degree. Now a resident of the historic A-Mill Artist Lofts of Minneapolis\, Byers maintains a busy schedule\, juggling original and freelance performances\, a private cello/bass studio\, and recording and production services. His recent career highlights include performing with Terence Blanchard & the Turtle Island Quartet\, becoming a faculty member at Carleton College\, and receiving the 2022 Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. \nDavid Feily is a genre-blending force and has become one of the Twin Cities most in-demand guitarists\, touring/session musicians\, and educators. His collaborative spirit has led him to work with many artists\, including LA Buckner\, Minneapolis String Project\, BZ3 Organ Trio\, and Rhythm Street Movement. Drawing from jazz\, funk\, R&B\, rock\, and world influences\, Feily’s playing is as emotive as it is technically masterful\, and his approach showcases blending skill with creativity. Whether he’s laying down syncopated grooves or exploring adventurous improvisations\, the live concert experience is both electrifying and intimate.

He has performed live with Buddy Guy and John Hiatt in theaters and arenas around the United States. Also\, post-New Orleans Jazz Fest jamming on bayou rhythms with Oteil Burbridge and Johnny Vidacovich. Further\, he has recorded and played live with ukulele phenom Jake Shimabukuro at The Blue Note in Hawaii. Thus\, it has been a noteworthy couple of years for the two time Grammy nominee. And those are just his side projects. \nLandreth explains his continually expanding musical horizons. “One of the things I love about collaborations with other artists is the element of surprise. When the chemistry is there\, it is always inspiring to find new twists and turns that up the game creatively.” \nWhat if Americana actually encompassed ALL of North America? You’d have the Franco-Acadian inflections of Canada\, as best exemplified by the accordion. Then\, you’d have blues and jazz\, the U.S.’s most original art form. Also\, the lilting grace and fiery passion of the music of Mexico. You’d also have New Orleans’ premiere distillers of this continental musical mélange\, The Iguanas. \nTheir three-decade ride has taken them all over the map musically and geographically. However\, the inescapable patina of their hometown infuses every note they play. They have produced eight studio albums among countless tours and Jazz Fest appearances. They survived a flood that did its best to take their adopted city with it. Therefore\, it’s a testament to the band’s endurance that the same four guys that started playing in the early 1990s are still together.

The heart of the CAO repertoire is the romantic\, gypsy-influenced valse-musette. Then\, the group complements the musettes with swing\, ballads\, tangos\, cha-chas\, rumbas\, and cumbias to create a wonderfully varied show. Moreover\, they inject their music with good humor and expressive abandon.  \nCAO is led by Dan Newton on accordion and vocals\, with Eric Mohring on mandolin\, violin and vocals. Also\, Brian Barnes on guitar and vocals\, Erik Lillestol on bass and vocals\, and Joe Steinger on percussion. CAO has been delighting audiences and dancers alike since 1995.  \nOne might wonder how a group of musicians in Minnesota end up forming a band that plays French musette. Additionally\, hot club swing\, Tin Pan Alley\, Latin music and cinematic themes. There\, it all started with a tune composed in 1992 by Newton. Dan had been introduced to the Parisian sidewalk cafe accordion sound while teaching at a music camp. Then\, a friend commented that one of the tunes in particular sounded like “cafe accordion” music.  \nPrudence Johnson’s career has taken her from honky-tonks to Carnegie Hall\, from the theater stage to the Silver Screen\, from the Midwest to the Middle East. Also\, with her roots in folk and country music\, Prudence developed a passion for jazz.
