SUMMARY:MGS Jazz and Fingerstyle Series Concert
DESCRIPTION:PK Mayo grew up in the mining town of Eveleth. From an early age\, when he was known as Paul Kennedy Mayasich\, he soaked up a wide range of diverse styles of music coming over the airwaves of the local college radio station\, KUMD. Mayo has played behind a veritable who’s who of rock\, blues and jazz royalty including Johnny Lang\, Tracy Nelson\, David Hidalgo (Los Lobos)\, Shannon Curfman\, Dinah Washington\, Jack McDuff\, Terry Evans\, Big Walter Smith\, Bernard Allison\, Leland Sklar and Mark Naftalin\, to name a few. He’s racked up a shelf of awards\, including induction into both the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame and the Minnesota Rock & Country Hall of Fame. Mayo’s rare touch\, feel\, and dynamism on slide guitar—both acoustic and electric—paired with his accomplished original songwriting and soulful vocals\, make him a complete musical package. \nJerry Kosak is a guitarist and composer hailed for his “obvious talent … and wonderfully recorded guitar” (Tommy Emmanuel)\, as well as his “great spirit and mean guitar playing” (Don Alder). His genre-bending programs and wide-ranging collaborations have grown out of “a great reflection of many different styles” (KBEM Jazz 88). Kosak has collaborated with world-class artists across genres and disciplines including DJ Freddy Fresh (Austin Powers in Goldmember)\, Grammy-winning guitarist Pat Donohue\, and MRAC and MAC grant-recipient visual artists Petra Johnita Lommen and MaryBeth Garrigan (Avian Night Sky).

SUMMARY:Matteo Mancuso at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Matteo Mancuso was born in 1996 and raised in the province of Palermo. There\, people quickly recognized him as a musical prodigy. His father\, Vincenzo Mancuso\, a well-known guitarist and producer\, guided Matteo’s introduction to the world of music. \nTeaming up with his father\, Matteo made waves in Sicily’s jazz scene\, participating in local festivals at just eleven years old. The duo explored a diverse repertoire\, spanning from Django Reinhardt to contemporary jazz. Then\, as a teenager\, Matteo pursued his passion by enrolling in a music high school\, specializing in classical guitar. \nAfter he earned his high school diploma\, he founded the Snips trio\, gaining widespread acclaim for their fusion take on classic standards. As a collaborator with Yamaha Guitars\, Matteo showcased his expertise at NAMM 2019 in Los Angeles. Additionally\, he participated as a judge at the “Young Guitar Festival” in Bangkok. 2019 also marked his venture into Russia\, conducting masterclasses in Moscow\, St. Petersburg\, and Perm. \nMancuso graduated from the Conservatory of Palermo in 2022 with a degree in jazz guitar. Then\, he immediately resumed touring and shared the stage with Al Di Meola during the Eddie Lang Jazz Festival. In 2023\, the legendary PFM invited Matteo as a guest for their new live album.  \nLater in 2023\, Mancuso joined Tommy Emmanuel on stage at the Teatro Golden in Palermo. Then\, he embarked on a summer headlining tour\, featuring previews of songs from Matteo’s eagerly anticipated debut solo album. \n“He’s a beautiful player and he is so versatile\, he plays any style\, he plays rock\, he plays Django\, pretty amazing.” – Eric Johnson

SUMMARY:CJ Chenier & The Red Hot Louisiana Band at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Clayton Joseph Chenier is Creole music royalty. His father\, the legendary Clifton Chenier\, invented the style of music we know today as Zydeco. Moreover\, Clifton is the first Creole musician to be recognized with a Grammy Award. \nRaised in this indigenous American culture with its own distinctive language\, cuisine and music\, C.J. delivers soulful vocals along with jaw-dropping masterful accordion-driven rock\, Zydeco and blues. \nC.J. spent his childhood in the tough tenement housing projects of Port Arthur\, Texas. C.J. joined his father’s band on his twenty-first birthday. His first gig was playing for the opening of the now world-renowned Antone’s in Austin\, Texas. \nOn the road\, his father showed him how to front a world class touring band. He taught C.J. how to run the family business and how to develop his lifelong passion for music into a career. When Clifton died in 1987 his son\, C.J.\, adopted the Red Hot Louisiana Band. Moreover\, he recorded his debut album for the great American independent label Arhoolie Records. \nC.J. has also played with John Mayall\, The Gin Blossoms\, Ray Parker\, Jr.\, Joe Sample\, Jimmie Vaughan\, Sonny Landreth and Buckwheat Zydeco. Also\, The Jon Stewart Show and CNN have featured him. Additionally\, he has performed at numerous music festivals around the world. Further\, he is a consistent crowd pleaser for The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. \nAttending a C.J. Chenier show is a transformative experience. You may come in tired and beat up just from living in this world – but you will leave renewed and happy.  And that is the promise C.J. makes. “You can’t come to my show and stay unhappy. You’re going to break a smile before too long. This is happy music.”

SUMMARY:Robb Henry\, Matt Senjem\, Jay Epstein
DESCRIPTION:After a year and a half break in live performances from March 2020 through July 2021 due to the pandemic\, Parisota Hot Club and the Robb Henry Trio are back to work once again. See the dates page for upcoming 2022 performances. \nAlthough best known for his recent work with Parisota Hot Club\, a band he formed in 2001 to explore the music and jazz guitar stylings of French guitarist Django Reinhardt\, Robb’s musical background includes a diverse range of experience. \nRobb’s guitar playing odyssey began in the autumn of 1966 at the age of thirteen when he joined up with the Surfers\, an established teenage rock band from the Hopkins/Minnetonka area. The popular group played many teen dances in the western suburbs of Minneapolis\, recorded a self-produced 45\, and appeared on local KMSP 9 television show “Organ Notes” in late 1966 before dissolving in early 1968. \nLater in the summer of that year\, he fell in with a group of young blues fanatics through a new acquaintance\, singer and blues harp player Reg Clow. This group eventually hooked up with blues singer and harp player Mojo Buford in the winter of 1968-69 and played with him through the summer of 1970. This experience with Mojo\, a Chicago style blues artist and close associate of the legendary Muddy Waters\, proved to be a major influence in Robb’s solo guitar work. Mojo served as a mentor to many young blues players during his time in the Twin Cities. \nIn early 1971 Robb was brought into the Top Forty danceband Brave New World by his old Surfers bandmate Bob Fisher. Worked lounges\, nightclubs\, and bars throughout the 1970’s with groups including Brave New World\, Walter Mitty\, The Philadelphia Story soul review at the Flame Bar\, Inside Straight and Sweet Thing. Gigged at the Longhorn bar with Fingerprints and recorded on Twin/Tone Records. Relocated to Chicago ’79-’84\, worked with songwriter Jessie Roe\, country singer Kent Rose\, legendary new wave singer Jim Desmond\, R&B funk group Frankie Hill and Metropol\, and back to the blues with Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report from Gary\, Indiana. \nRelocated back to Minneapolis at the end of 1984\, recorded and played gigs with Tom Bright. Briefly fronted a blues-rock trio called World Wide Hoodoo. Played jazz and pop in the ’90’s with corporate and wedding bands\, did blues gigs and recorded with Cooker John band\, explored new styles and material in solo guitar coffeehouse gigs from 1994 through 2002\, also began teaching private guitar lessons on a regular basis in early 1995 ….met French expatriate and violinist Raphaël Fraisse in 2001 and voila! Parisota Hot Club \nNotable groups: The Surfers ’66-’67… Mojo Buford ’69-’70… Brave New World ’71-’72… Walter Mitty ’73…Philadelphia Story ’75… Inside Straight and Sweet Thing 1976-1977\, Fingerprints ’77-’78… Kent Rose 1980…Desmond ’81… Metropol ’83-’84…Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report ’84…Tom Bright 1986-’91… World Wide Hoodoo 1986-’88… Parisota Hot Club 2001 to present… Robb Henry Trio early 2010 to present \nSome memorable performances: “Organ Notes” November 1966 KMSP 9 TV appearance with the Surfers… B.B. King show at the Depot in Minneapolis 1970 with Mojo Buford…opening for U2 at Park West in Chicago 1981 with Desmond….playing Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis with Parisota Hot Club 2005 \nSince early 2010\, he has also been performing a distinctive blend of instrumental music with his self-titled guitar\, bass and drums trio. \nLive sets by this combo are a melting pot of styles steeped in blues\, jazz and ’60’s pop music. Retro noire style movie themes\, à la Henry Mancini and others\, selections by Django Reinhardt\, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles are standard set features.Familiar melodies\, unexpected excursions\, and sonic surprises reminiscent of vintage psychedelic Brit-Rock\, make for a fluid\, musical landscape.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day with Sophia Shorai & Tommy Barbella at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Sophia Shorai is a vocalist driven by an intuitive hunger for the “great song.” As a mainstay of Minneapolis music since 2010\, she possesses the rare\, chameleonic ability to inhabit any genre. Here\, she handles the complex architecture of the Great American Songbook with ease. Equally\, she evokes the raw grit of soul\, funk\, and R&B. \nHer precision was forged early. There\, she mimicked jazz legends from her father’s record collection and began classical training at age five. Shorai bypassed prestigious conservatories to dive straight into the Twin Cities’ live and commercial recording circuits. There\, she turned her voice into a versatile powerhouse. She has contributed to international films\, TV shows\, and major advertising campaigns since the late 1990s. \nWhile renowned for her mastery of the jazz idiom\, Shorai currently explores the lean\, emotive landscapes of contemporary soul and pop. Collaborating with producer Bryan Hanna\, she strips away the decorative to focus on the bone-deep impact of her original songwriting. Her new album\, TIME\, arrives in Spring 2026—a testament to a career spent proving she can sing anything\, and a soul that won’t settle for anything less than a classic. \nTommy Barbarella is one of the most active keyboard players in Minneapolis and beyond. His work with Prince’s New Power Generation (1991-96) put him on the map\, and his playing with regional funk/soul favorites Greazy Meal cemented his reputation as a go-to funk and pop keyboardist. Recently he has performed with Miley Cyrus\, Nick Jonas\, and a reunited NPG. \n“Sophia has everything a singer could want: soul\, versatility… a unique style\, and visceral love of music and performance. Whether she’s belting or crooning\, she breaks hearts.” Adam Levy\, guitarist\, singer/songwriter for The Honeydogs.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day/ Mike Lewis & Barbara Jean at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:This Valentine’s Day\, sweethearts Mike Lewis (Happy Apple) and Barbara Jean (Dusty Heart) will perform tender tunes on guitar\, saxophone\, banjo\, fiddle\, and voice. Seated tickets include a selection of savory and sweet snacks; additional a la carte dinner & beverage menus will be available. \n⊹ \nMike Lewis is regarded throughout the Twin Cities and well beyond as one of the most creative sax players in modern music\, lending his blowing and bowing skills to a number of highly regarded ensembles\, including Bon Iver\, Happy Apple\, Andrew Bird\, and Gayngs. \nBarbara Jean grew up immersed in a world of music and sound\, honing her early gift for the violin\, and a musical legacy passed from grandmother to mother to daughter\, into a sharp eye for songwriting and a skilled hand as a multi-instrumentalist. Calling the rugged grandeur of Lake Superior’s North Shore home for the last several years\, she has developed her craft through constant live performance and has struck out on her own to take her debut record\, The Great Escape\, to fans all across the Midwest. Classically trained on the viola at the University of Minnesota\, and self-taught at the banjo\, her voice and songs transcend tradition with a mix of Americana\, Appalachia\, and an insightful vulnerability in lyric and delivery.

Celebrate (the day after) Valentine’s with two powerhouses of bluegrass: Arkansauce and Chicken Wire Empire. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nARKANSAUCE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkansauce calls forth melodies of the Ozark Mountains’ rolling hills and raging rivers with their distinct blend of newgrass. This progressive string quartet features Tom Andersen on bass\, guitarist Zac Archuleta\, Ethan Bush on mandolin\, and Adams Collins on banjo. Their music features improvisational string leads matched with complex melodies\, intriguing rhythms\, and deep thumping bass grooves. Each member sings lead and harmony parts as well as contributes to the lyrics\, which offer authentic\, intelligent songwriting with hard-hitting hooks. \n\n\n\nCHICKEN WIRE EMPIRE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChicken Wire Empire is a Wisconsin-based bluegrass band known for their dynamic musicality\, thorough arrangements\, and true-to-life songwriting. The band emerged in 2016 with their debut self-titled album and have since released a prolific catalogue of studio projects and live performances. Their sixth and latest album\, Growing Pains\, releases June 1 and is a veritable culmination of the band’s growth through the past decade. \nCWE continuously captivates audiences with thoughtful\, energetic performances. Their high-level musicality turns up a fresh conversation with each show\, like a brainstorm of creative musical substance. Americana Highways writes “These musicians must enjoy what they do because their joy translates through their instruments. The energy\, fingering techniques are all proponents that deliver substance with a modicum of joy. There aren’t any low points\, missteps\, loss of heat in any of these melodies.” \nThe band has been recognized worldwide for their performances and recorded works\, with Americana UK calling their latest album “a variety which transcends genre and rewards careful listening.” Capturing the ever-evolving sights and sounds of the road through the lens of their Midwestern roots\, the band’s catalog of songs is ever-growing and CWE continues to be acknowledged for their pensive attention to detail in writing and crafting deeply engaging songs. \nChicken Wire Empire has partnered with dozens of artists from all corners of the bluegrass genre\, from Sam Bush and Peter Rowan to Vince Herman and Keller Williams. Their forthcoming album features guest appearances from Grammy-winning artists Jerry Douglas and Kyle Tuttle. The long list of collaborators has lent a lifetime of taste and knowledge to CWE’s musical journey while the band has grown into its identifiably authentic yet original sound.
