SUMMARY:Original Jazz with Leslie Vincent and Her Band at Illusion Theater
DESCRIPTION:Leslie Vincent and Her Band will be playing songs off their soon-to-be-released record\, Little Black Book. Leslie will be telling a few extra stories that didn’t make it into songs. Originally conceived as a one-woman show\, which makes it even more special to perform in a theater! We hope this music reminds you that love can be found in the most unlikely places and that our souls are stronger than we know.

SUMMARY:Emmett Cohen Trio at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen has emerged as one of his generation’s pivotal art figures. A recognized prodigy\, Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three. There\, his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality\, technique\, and concept. Downbeat observed that his “nimble touch\, measured stride and warm harmonic vocabulary indicate he’s above any convoluted technical showmanship.” In the same spirit\, Cohen has noted that playing jazz is “about communicating the deepest levels of humanity and individuality. It’s essentially about connections\,” both among musicians and with audiences. He leads his namesake ensemble\, the Emmet Cohen Trio\, and is a vibrant solo performer. Furthermore\, he is in constant demand as a sideman. Here\, he possesses a fluid technique\, an innovative tonal palette\, and an extensive repertoire\, Cohen plays with the command of a seasoned veteran and the passion of an artist fully devoted to his medium. \nEmmet Cohen is committed to the intergenerational transfer of artistic knowledge\, history\, and traditions. His signature undertaking is the Masters Legacy Series\, a celebratory set of recordings and interviews honoring legendary jazz musicians. He serves as both producer and pianist for each album in the series. The goal of this ongoing project is to provide musicians of multiple generations with a forum. Thus\, they transfer the unwritten folklore that is America’s unique musical idiom. Cohen has observed that playing jazz “is enriched immeasurably by connecting and studying with jazz masters\, forging backward to the very creation of the art form.” Volume one of the series features drummer Jimmy Cobb\, and volume two spotlights bassist Ron Carter. Future Masters Legacy Series releases will include Cohen’s recordings with Benny Golson\, Tootie Heath\, and George Coleman.

SUMMARY:Laurels String Quartet Residency at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:A vital force in the Minneapolis music scene with reach far beyond it\, the Laurels String Quartet has supported stars including Father John Misty\, Semisonic\, and Ondara but have never stepped out as headliners themselves. This March\, that changes! The Laurels will host a five-week residency at Berlin\, joined by a rotating cast of exceptional artists from their creative orbit. \nFor the inaugural evening of the Laurels’ residency\, storytellers Annie Humphrey and Barbara Cohen will present a program of moving\, evocative new arrangements alongside the quartet and go-to guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker. \nDoors for the first set will open at 5:30 p.m.\, while doors for the second set will open at 7:45 p.m. \nLaurels String Quartet:\nJosh Misner – Violin\nDevan Moran – Violin\nErica Burton – Viola\nJacqueline Ultan – Cello \nMarch 1 – featuring Barbara Cohen & Annie Humphrey \nAnnie Humphrey is a grandmother\, veteran\, seamstress\, visual artist\, seasonal gift harvester who writes songs and sings them during “the in between.”  OR maybe she is a singer/songwriter\, grandmother\, seamstress\, visual artist who harvests Earth gifts during “the in between.” OR maybe she just does her best to fit it all in where it all fits in.  So far\, it works for her. \nBUT\, the purpose for this bio is to say a bit about Annie as a singer/songwriter.  The age old question is: How long does it take to write a song? \nAnnie’s answer: “My whole life. We all have our own stories: the ones we live\, the ones we tell ourselves in our head\, the ones we post on social media. Which [ones are] real? I try to articulate my reality through songs that have been forming in my head since I began my ceremony of life.” \n⊹ \nMinneapolis native Barbara Cohen is an award-winning composer\, singer\, and songwriter whose luminous voice and cross-genre artistry span folk\, electronica\, and modern cinematic soundscapes. A founding member of Brother Sun Sister Moon (Virgin Records) and former frontwoman of Farm Accident (Red House Records)\, Cohen has collaborated with England’s electronic pioneers Orbital and France’s Air and released the acclaimed solo album California. Her work has been praised as “a gorgeous\, dark-streaked evocation of bitter truths\, yearning\, and redemption” (City Pages) and for “an absolutely breathtaking voice” (Iowa City Press Citizen). Now back in Minneapolis after years in Los Angeles composing for film and television\, Cohen continues to create with Little Lizard—her long-time collaborators Jacqueline Ultan\, Jeremy Ylvisaker\, and Marc Anderson—with a new EP planned for 2026. Her work endures for its clarity\, depth\, and patience: reminders that reinvention can be as simple as returning home to the sound that’s always been yours. \n⊹ \nAfter a chance meeting over a decade ago\, the Laurels String Quartet quickly became a staple of the Minneapolis music scene. Their collective instinct for tuning into the emotional frequency of a song has amassed the group collaborators near and far. Artists such as Belle & Sebastian\, Father John Misty\, Lucius\, jeremy messersmith\, Macklemore\, Dan Wilson\, Jason Mraz\, Rogue Valley\, Motion City Soundtrack\, the New Standards\, and Ondara have sought their company on stage and in the studio. The quartet has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman\, PBS\, The Current\, and NPR and has performed on stages across the country\, from the celebrated outdoor festival Rock The Garden at the Walker Art Center to the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn\, NY. \nPhoto by Nate Ryan \n

SUMMARY:The 3 Ms Third Annual Celebration // Minnesota Music Masters: McLaughlin/Monroe/Mayer at the Parkway Theater
DESCRIPTION:A night of exceptional original compositions from three highly-awarded Minnesota artists whose careers span decades\, musical genres\, and across the globe. What can you expect this first Monday in March?  Melody Melody Melody! Featuring Billy McLaughlin\, Michael Monroe\, and Peter Mayer! \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmmy Award-winner and acoustic guitar vanguard\, Billy McLaughlin returns to The Parkway with more new compositions from the far reaches of the solo guitar galaxy. If you don’t know Billy’s music\, or what he’s been through to keep making it\, this show is a must-see. Acoustic guitar that defies gravity. \n“…you might swear Billy McLaughlin is two of the greatest acoustic guitar players you’ve ever heard.”—Pittsburgh Post Gazette \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Monroe\, “MN Acoustic Music Master\,” (Star Tribune) performs original music on vocals\, crystal/bamboo flutes\, and plays Seaton Guitars from the Gunflint Trail\, hand-crafted with 200-year-old wood from the bottom of Lake Superior. \nMonroe’s award-winning instrumental soundtracks have been featured on PBS/CBC and the Toronto Enviro/New York Indie Film Fests in Chased By The Light; and was also awarded an Emmy for Soaring On Mended Wings. \nMonroe returned to the Twin Cities following 28 years on the North Shore of Lake Superior near Grand Marais\, 11 of which were “off the grid” where he recorded his first 12 albums using solar power. He presented Log Cabin Concerts in his cabin for 800 people a year for 17 years\, which were featured on KSTP’s Jason Davis’ OnTheRoad\, and in Lake Superior and Cabin Life Magazines. \n“With heartfelt sincerity and a poetic touch in both the lyrics and music\, Monroe explores subtle\, quiet places that spark the imagination.”—Wintersong CD Review\, City Pages  \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMinnesota’s Peter Mayer has been singing and songwriting full-time for 25 years\, performing in venues across the United States and beyond. He writes songs for a small planet–songs about interconnectedness and the human journey — songs about life on earth and the mysterious and wondrous fact of our existence. He also writes songs about dress hats\, pumpkins and pajamas\, and even love and freight trains just like a good folk musician should. His music has been performed by artists like Kathy Mattea\, David Wilcox\, Claudia Schmidt\, Anne Hills\, Priscilla Herdman\, Darryl Purpose\, Billy Jonas\, and Ronny Cox\, to name a few. His work has been included in song books\, church hymnals\, and folk radio playlists across the country. Peter has eleven albums to his credit\, and has sold over 100\,000 of them. He lives in Stillwater\, Minnesota with his wife and two daughters.

SUMMARY:Al Di Meola at Dakota Jazz Club Night 2
DESCRIPTION:Al Di Meola is one of the top guitarists of our time. Here\, he has enjoyed a celebrated career that has spanned more than four decades. His fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation\, provocative lyrical melodies\, and sophisticated harmony are at the heart of his music. Among his myriad critical accolades are multiple Grammys and Grammy nominations. Additionally\, twelve awards from polls conducted by Guitar Player magazine\, which inducted Di Meola into its Gallery of Greats. \nA bona fide guitar hero and prolific composer\, Di Meola has created more than thirty albums as a leader. Furthermore\, he has collaborated on about a dozen others. These include fusion supergroup Return to Forever (with Chick Corea\, Stanley Clarke\, and Lenny White). Also\, the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio (featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía). Further\, the Rite of Strings trio (with Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty). Here\, his dazzling technique has made him a hero to fretboard fanatics. However\, the depth of Di Meola’s writing\, along with the soulfulness and inherent lyricism of his expressive playing\, have won him a worldwide fanbase beyond the guitar aficionado set.

SUMMARY:Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:In Chicago\, a city overflowing with unrivaled blues talent\, world-renowned Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials have been standing tall for over thirty years. There\, the band’s big sound is as real and hard-hitting as Chicago blues gets. It’s fueled by Lil’ Ed’s gloriously rollicking slide work and deep blues string bending\, along with his rough-edged\, soulful vocals. The Chicago Sun-Times says\, “Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials are the hottest purveyors of bottleneck boogie to come out of Chicago since Hound Dog Taylor.” \nLil’ Ed Williams comes to the blues naturally. His uncle\, slide guitar king and master songwriter J.B. Hutto\, taught him how to feel\, not just play the blues. Nine albums and thousands of performances later\, Lil’ Ed is now universally hailed as a giant of the genre. Additionally\, the band includes bassist (and Ed’s half-brother) James “Pookie” Young\, guitarist Mike Garrett and drummer Kelly Littleton. Also\, they have remained together for over thirty years\, an extraordinary feat for any group. Moreover\, the band fuels Ed’s songs with their rock-solid\, road-tested\, telepathic musicianship. \nThe group took home the Living Blues Award for Best Live Performer in 2011\, 2012 and 2013. They won the prestigious Blues Music Award for Band Of The Year in both 2007 and 2009. The Associated Press says\, “Williams fills Chicago’s biggest shoes with more life and heat than anyone on stage today.” \nTheir infectious energy\, joyful showmanship and masterful playing have been honed to a razor’s edge by their many years together. Lil’ Ed\, Pookie\, Mike and Kelly have seen sports stars and presidents\, musical fads and fashion trends come and go.

SUMMARY:Dean Magraw\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein at the Hat!
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by decades of performing and recording with a cornucopia of heroic Artists\, Dean Magraw’s poetic musical dynamism mines the depths of passionate healing melody stirring up textures of the unusual and the familiar as the music weaves the simple story of how we feel right now.\n“Dean’s guitar playing transcends\, transports and lifts the soul to a higher level as he weaves\, cajoles and entices every note from his instrument. The note\, length of note\, tone of note\, the bending of the note; every colour of the note is explored and delivered with a master’s care and love. Just as important are the silences with which he knits his music… these can only come with being at one with one’s art. Dean Magraw is an incredible world class musician who’s modesty only makes him more appreciated by the listener.” -Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (Altan)\n“Dean Magraw… so liquid\, lyrical and effortless it’s like listening to a dancer.” -Steve Tibbetts\n“Dean Magraw unveils soulful melodic grooves intricately designed to heal the broken dancer\, confuse the boldest mathematician\, and eradicate ennui in our lifetime.” -Nick Lethert \nHome

SUMMARY:JJJJJerome Ellis with Mary Hanson Scott at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Composer/poet JJJJJerome Ellis will share contemplative soundscapes using piano\, electronics\, and vocals. Opener Mary Hanson Scott will create live compositions with saxophone and electronics\, exploring the interplay between sound\, the body\, the earth\, and the cosmos. \n⊹ \n\n“The five J’s in this multidisciplinary artist’s name represent a central fact of his life and work: He has a stutter. That shapes his music; as he speaks\, he may be mirrored by skittering drums. Sometimes he forgoes voice altogether to make enigmatic\, peaceful instrumental pieces.” – New York magazine \n\n⊹ \nJJJJJerome Ellis is a stuttering\, Afro-Caribbean composer\, poet\, and performer. Through an interdisciplinary practice that focuses on oral storytelling; improvisation; and the interrelations between speech\, silence\, disability\, and religion\, they have collaborated with choreographers\, rappers\, playwrights\, booksellers\, typographers\, podcasters\, toddlers\, and filmmakers. Their works are invitations to healing\, transcendence\, communion\, and deep listening. \nEllis’s work has been presented or developed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab\, Lincoln Center\, MASS MoCA\, and WKCR. As a jazz saxophonist\, they have performed with Joseph Daley\, Aaron Scott\, and Shayna Dulberger. Recent sound design/composing credits include Help (The Shed)\, Passage (Soho Repertory Theatre)\, the Radical Craft Design Salon (TED Conferences)\, and LAB RAT by A$AP Rocky (Sotheby’s/YouTube). Ellis earned their Bachelor of Arts in music theory and ethnomusicology from Columbia University\, studying ear training and counterpoint with pianist and composer Ramin Arjomand. \n⊹ \nMary Hanson Scott is a musician and composer based in Minneapolis. She has performed at events such as Drone Not Drones in Minneapolis\, International Noise Conference in Miami\, and Big Ears Festival in Knoxville (with Green Ribbon). She spent many years in the New Orleans experimental music scene developing a reedy\, textural\, psychedelic sound. Esoteric Lounge Music Now\, the full-length album of multidimensional noir by Scott and Ruth Mascelli (NY)\, was released in 2025 on the London-based label Disciples.

SUMMARY:Dar Williams with Joy Clark at the Cedar Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:The Cedar is proud to welcome back folk songwriter Dar Williams\, described as “one of America’s very best singer-songwriters” by the New Yorker. Her new album is out this September on Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records. \n“It’s a highway\, filled with deep\, exotic colors and beautiful delicate things as well as the perils that come from moving so fast\,” says Dar Williams\, describing modern life. On her 13th album\, Hummingbird Highway\, out September 12 on Righteous Babe Records\, Williams celebrates the colors she glimpses from her vantage as a touring musician. “I was a kid from the suburbs who listened when her hippie teachers said to get out in the world\,” Williams muses. Hummingbird Highway is the latest chapter in a richly unfolding story. Drawing on her experience as a playwright\, Williams populates her latest album with nuanced characters that come alive in the space of a few minutes. \nJoy Clark is a New Orleans singer-songwriter\, lyrical guitarist and composer who creates soulful original compositions that celebrate peace and the undeniable power of love. Her intricate rhythms and warm melodies reveal a sweet vulnerability that enchants her audiences around the world.
