The gist of this semi-soapboxed speech is that the music we play does not need to sound identical to their original recordings. (This is when I would normally bemoan\, “If I wanted to hear the original recordings\, I would do just that… listen to the original recordings.”) Rather\, the music lives on because of the people playing it\, it is a Living Art Form.\nThis embodies the After Hours Big Band in my mind: a network of friends who wanted to see their own playing live on after years of playing in collegiate ensembles (as well as high school and middle school jazz bands.)\nThe original ensemble consisted of educators from Minnesota and Wisconsin; meeting once a month to play through a handful of “old favorites.” In the years that followed\, the group expanded and evolved into both a performing ensemble as well as an educational resource for Twin Cities school music programs.\nThe After Hours Big Band continues to perform for a variety of events and is dedicated to performing the highest quality of music while reaching a broad variety of audience members. DESCRIPTION:Brandon Wozniak is one of Minnesota’s most exciting saxophonists. He returned to the twin cities in 2006 after six years in New York City and a six month stint in Shanghai\, China. Wozniak studied music at Indiana University with David Baker and privately with Tom Walsh. Brandon performs regularly with Dave King’s(Bad Plus\, Happy Apple drummer) Dave King Trucking Company with saxophonist Chris Speed\, the Atlantis Quartet(City Pages Best Jazz Artist 2011\, Star Tribune Best Jazz Artist 2012)\, Bryan Nichols Quintet\, Chris Bates Red 5\, Vector Families\, Zacc Harris Group\, Lars Larson’s Mancrush plus many other projects. Brandon has also performed with Eric Kamau Gravatt(Weather Report\, McCoy Tyner)\, singer Nellie McKay\, toured with the Tommy Dorsey Jazz Orchestra and shared the stage with Francisco Mela(Joe Lovano’s US Five)\, Steve Davis\, David Berkman\, Ben Wendel and Dennis Gonzalez. Brandon’s newest collaboration is a band called Bulldozer School with the great bassist Anthony Cox and drummer Dave King.
