DESCRIPTION:Dale Alexander at the age of 24 had a rich and varied musical background than many musicians achieve in a lifetime. Studying with prominent musicians such as Marvin Dahlgren and Dr. Reginald Buckner of the University School of Music served to enhance Dale’s unlimited natural musical talent. He was recognized by the University of Wisconsin with a National Jazz Education Award for his outstanding individual performance as a percussionist. By the time he graduated from high school\, he had already performed with the nationally known soul group\, the Temptations.\nIn the ensuing years\, Dale has appeared with virtually every well-known jazz artist in the States. After conquering the drums\, he turned his sights toward the piano studying with Manfredo Fest.\nDale worked as one of the Musical Directors for the Christmas performance from “American Idol on Tour” and is available for national and international engagements. He is also available for both piano and drum lessons in his studio in Chatsworth\, California.\n​In the early 90s\, he was Musical Director for Andiamo’s\, a world class jazz club in Aspen and stayed there until he moved to the Los Angeles area. DESCRIPTION:Trombonist/composer Kalia Vandever makes their Minnesota debut at Berlin with a solo performance. Ross Clowser opens and closes the evening with International Anthem–inflected DJ sets. \n⊹ \nKalia Vandever is a Grammy Award-winning trombonist and composer living in Brooklyn\, NY. Their distinctive approach to the trombone is defined by their sonorous tone and lyrical improvisational voice. They lean into the challenges of the instrument and allow patience and melody to guide their process. \nIn their compositional practice\, Vandever draws from their love of songs and improvisation\, creating a landscape of sounds that resonate in the body and hold the listener. They released their debut ensemble album\, In Bloom\, in 2019. Their sophomore album\, Regrowth (New Amsterdam Records\, 2022)\, “confirms [their] strengths as a composer and bandleader with a distinctly contemporary point of view” (Nate Chinen\, WBGO Jazz). Their debut solo album\, We Fell In Turn—featuring their works for trombone\, voice and electronics—was released on AKP Records in 2023.  Their newest album\, Another View\, features Mary Halvorson\, Kanoa Mendenhall\, and Kayvon Gordon and was praised by Downbeat for “its entrancing\, cyclical rhythms and longing melodicism.” \nVandever has toured and performed internationally with their quartet\, performing at festivals such as the Winter Jazz Festival and BRIC Jazz Festival. They are also for their work as a sideperson\, performing with jazz artists including Joel Ross\, Immanuel Wilkins\, and Fay Victor. Vandever has also performed with popular artists including Harry Styles\, Lizzo\, Japanese Breakfast\, Moses Sumney\, Jennifer Hudson\, and Demi Lovato. They are a founding member of tilt\, a Brooklyn-based collective bringing together the voices of Isabel Crespo Pardo\, Carmen Quill\, and Vandever. \nVandever received their Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies from the Juilliard School in 2017. They are an awardee of the 2022 Next Jazz Legacy\, a program founded by New Music USA and the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. They were also selected to curate the 2022 Music Series for The Arts Center at Duck Creek in East Hampton. Along with their performance work\, Vandever has been commissioned to write works for groups and individuals including Tesla Quartet\, the Westerlies\, Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim\, and Hats+Heels. \nVandever is on faculty at the New England Conservatory and has led masterclasses at universities including California Institute of the Arts\, University of Chicago Illinois\, Cal State Northridge\, Saddleback College\, University of Maine Farmington\, and University of Missouri. \nVandever endorses Conn Selmer and Bach instruments as well as Denis Wick London. \n⊹ \nHailing from the prairies of Iowa\, Ross Clowser is an American composer\, improviser\, scholar\, guitarist\, and DJ. His current projects include the Ross Clowser Quartet; Starflower; and People Electric\, an intermedia project with his sibling\, Anna Clowser. He released his first studio album\, “this is how we move through time\,” on Aura Vortex Records in 2025.

DESCRIPTION:The Harry Scott Quintet will perform one and a half hours of originals\, and new arrangements of standards. \nHarry Scott is an up and coming pianist and composer based in the Twin Cities and Chicago. Just 18\, he has performed with his Trio\, Quintet\, and solo across countless venues in the areas\, including The Dakota and Berlin. He is influenced by pianists by the likes of Sullivan Fortner\, Brad Mehldau\, and Bill Evans\, and composers such as Wayne Shorter\, Cedar Walton\, and Monk. \nLaeton Olaleye is a rising talent in the Twin Cities jazz scene. He has performed in venues including the Dakota Jazz Club\, Crooners\, Jazz Central Studios\, MetroNOME Brewery\, and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival with renowned Twin Cities artists such as Omar Abdulkarim\, Tom Lewis\, and Will Kjeer. He has also played in New York City\, Chicago\, and Louisville. Laeton was a 2025-26 Minnesota Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Band musician and has received instruction from acclaimed jazz artists such as Patrick Bartley\, Kevin Washington\, Scott Johnson\, Jack Breen\, and Kavyesh Kaviraj. Olaleye’s captivating style has been influenced by Arthur Blythe\, John Coltrane\, and Cannonball Adderley\, along with many other greats. \nMatthew Hess\, 18\, is a saxophonist from Minneapolis\, MN. He performs with various groups across the Twin Cities including Minnesota Youth Jazz Bands\, Walker West Music Academy\, and MacPhail Center for Music. He has performed at various venues across the Twin Cities. \nCallum Schultz is a 17 year old bassist who has performed alongside saxophone greats Joe Lovano\, Kenni Holmen\, and JD Allen\, and has played at numerous Twin Cities venues such as The Dakota\, the Landmark Center\, the Governor’s Residence\, The Green Room\, and Berlin Jazz Club. He is a 2025/26 MN All State musician\, and a 2025/26 YoungArts jazz bass award winner. \nPete James Johnson is drummer\, composer and producer based in the Twin Cities. He regularly performs in the local music scene and sometimes performs with award-winning national artists. When not playing\, Pete works from home as a composer and producer writing music and producing local artists.

DESCRIPTION:The Steve Kenny Quintet will play selections from their recently released Blue Chunks album intermixed with some crowd-pleasing favorite jazz standards. There may be some Coltrane! \nBand Members:\nSteve Kenny – Trumpet\nPete Whitman – Saxophones\nLevi Schwartzberg – Vibraphone\nDan Carpel – Bass\nMiguel Hurtado – Drums \nSteve Kenny is active in the Minnesota jazz community as a performer\, composer\, and curator. Kenny is a founding member of the illicit sextet\, Group 47\, What Would Monk Do?\, and his own quartets. Kenny was the curator of a weekly Saturday jazz series at KJ’s Hideaway\, and before that the Black Dog Cafe\, producing over 400 Saturday Night Jazz shows.  His latest recording\, “Quartets”\, includes original compositions played by four separate ensembles of Twin Cities jazz musicians\, including a live version of Steve Kenny’s Ghost Suite. In 2019\, the national Jazz Journalists Association named Kenny a “Minnesota Jazz Hero” for his work in the jazz community and lifelong devotion to the idiom. \nDan Carpel attended Berklee College of Music\, where he was in the school’s Monterey Quartet. He was a member of Jason Palmer’s band throughout his time in town\, and was a mainstay in their residency at Wally’s Jazz Cafe. His time out east also notably included playing in groups led by Godwin Louis\, Noah Preminger\, and Melissa Aldana. Since relocating to the Twin Cities\, Carpel has regularly worked with Javi Santiago\, Zacc Harris\, and Abinnet Berhanu. He frequently performed with singer/guitarist Mary Cutrufello as well as Sonny Knight and the Lakers\, and he recently became a part of Dylan Hicks’s Small Screens. \nMiguel Hurtado played throughout the Twin Cities as a teenager in several youth bands\, as well as with South High jazz ensembles. After graduating from the Manhattan School of Music in spring 2010\, he returned to the Twin Cities where he quickly became a busy member of the local jazz scene. He has led his own ensembles at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival and performed at the Artists Quarter and Dakota; more recently he has been heard at Jazz Central\, the Icehouse\, Black Dog\, and more. In addition to leading his own bands\, he has performed with Jake Baldwin\, John Raymond\, Jeremy Walker\, Javi Santiago\, Joe Strachan\, Ted Olsen\, Will Kjeer\, Steve Kenny\, and Courageous Endeavors. He is also expanding his musical resume\, playing with some local pop and R&B singers\, particularly Alicia Steele and vocalist/rapper Toussaint Morrison. \nLevi Schwartzberg grew up playing vibraphone and piano in the Twin Cities\, specializing in improvisationally emphasized music. He has played with a number of groups—such as Le Percheron\, No Territory Band\, and the Steve Kenny Quartet—in addition to leading his own quartet. He uses a variety of melodic and textural approaches to create an open\, free-leaning sound that can fit in a wide array of musical contexts. \nPete Whitman is a saxophonist\, flutist\, clarinetist\, composer\, arranger\, and educator based in the Twin Cities. He has performed with such distinguished groups as the Minnesota Orchestra\, Jack McDuff\, Curtis Fuller\, the Woody Herman Orchestra\, the Jazz MN Big Band\, the Glenn Miller Orchestra\, Andres Prado\, Dave Stryker\, the Temptations\, and the Midtown Men. Whitman has three CDs under his name: Departure Point (Igmod Records)\, The Sound of Water (Artegra)\, and Where’s When (Artegra). He also taught saxophone\, improvisation\, and arranging for 18 years at McNally Smith College of Music and directed the McNally Smith Jazz Orchestra.

SUMMARY:Andrew Walesch & His Orchestra at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Singer/pianist Andrew Walesch encapsulates the sophistication of a cosmopolite and the self-effacing charm of a country boy\, like many before him. Leading his all-star big band\, showman Walesch kidnaps the Blue Eyes tradition and makes it his own. With this ten-piece band\, Walesch embodies both a traditionalist and an iconoclast with his jazz-bent Sinatra revue. \nWalesch is busy and versatile. Here\, he composes and arranges\, appearing in settings ranging from solo artist to big band. Moreover\, this St. Cloud native is as respectful of his predecessors as he is ready to chart a new course. Andrew routinely jams venues all over the Midwest and beyond with a uniquely cross-generational audience. Walesch’s fans include jazz enthusiasts of a certain age\, as well as a younger crowd compelled by his down-home insouciance. Also\, all are drawn in by the knowing irreverence of a tried-and-true American nightclub entertainer. \n“Although they are my idols\, I don’t attempt to imitate the great pop and jazz artists of the 50s and ’60s\,” says Andrew\, “but I go for broke when we do our shows – vocally and musically – which is what they all did best and why they were in a class of their own.” He possesses fine vocal and piano chops\, along with a keen sensibility to find and interpret a great lyric. These have led to some great opportunities for Walesch. He has appeared on the nationally syndicated NPR broadcast Mountain Stage. Additionally\, he performed at the 33rd Annual Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. \nWalesch resides in Phoenix\, AZ\, where he is the Artistic Director for the world-famous Musical Instrument Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Mei Semones’ sweetly evocative blend of jazz\, bossa nova and math-y indie rock is not only a way for her to find solace in her favorite genres\, but is an intuitive means of catharsis. “Blending everything that I like together and trying to make something new — that’s what feels most natural to me\,” says the 23-year-old Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and guitarist. “It’s what feels most true to who I am as an artist.” On her newest EP and Bayonet Records debut Kabutomushi\, Mei’s diverse sonic palette adds depth to her experiences of the complexities of love. Through the EP’s five songs\, she chronicles infatuation\, devotion\, vulnerability\, and saying goodbye in some of her closest relationships\, complete with sweeping strings\, virtuosic guitar-playing and heartfelt lyrics sung in both English and Japanese.

Her haunting contribution to The Crow soundtrack\, “It Can’t Rain All the Time”\, continues to resonate three decades later. \nDespite a prolific career\, Siberry reflects: “I feel like I’m inching my way toward my prime.” \n2025 and 2026 are big years for Siberry. In 2025\, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted her. Additionally\, she won the Polaris Legends Award for her iconic album The Speckless Sky. Then in 2026\, she returns with her sixteenth album\, Season One: In the Thicket of Our Own Unconsciousness. She expects Season Two and Three to follow later in 2026 with a North American tour afterward. Here\, Siberry continues to redefine what it means to be an independent\, visionary artist. \nAfter a decade-long recording pause\, Siberry returns with a highly anticipated gathering of songs. They are interwoven with musical and spoken segues that she calls the matrix\, making the album play like a musical Netflix series. He often incorporates other genres\, from Afro-Latin music to hip-hop and R&B beats. The son of saxophonist Donald Washington and singer Faye Washington\, Kevin grew up in Detroit immersed in learning music and listening to the jazz greats who came before him. Since moving to the Twin Cities in his teens\, he continues to capture the spirit of African and African American music while making it his own. Kevin is a drumming instructor at Walker West Music Academy and works with the student jazz ensembles. \nSaxophonist Laeton Olaleye is a rising talent in the Twin Cities jazz scene. He has performed in venues including the Dakota Jazz Club\, Crooners\, Jazz Central Studios\, MetroNOME Brewery\, and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival with renowned Twin Cities artists such as Omar Abdulkarim\, Tom Lewis\, and Will Kjeer. He has also played in New York City\, Chicago\, and Louisville. He has received instruction from acclaimed jazz artists Kevin Washington\, Scott Johnson\, Jack Breen\, and Kavyesh Kaviraj. Olaleye’s captivating style has been influenced by Patrick Bartley\, Arthur Blythe\, John Coltrane\, and Cannonball Adderley\, along with many other greats. \nCallum Schultz is a bassist who has performed alongside saxophone greats Joe Lovano\, Kenni Holmen\, and JD Allen and has played at Twin Cities venues such as the Dakota\, the Landmark Center\, the Governor’s Residence\, Green Room\, and Berlin. He is a 2025-26 Minnesota Music Educators Association All-State musician and a 2025-26 YoungArts jazz bass award winner.

SUMMARY:Mary Halvorson: Canis Major with Nelson Devereaux at the Cedar Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Incomparable guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson brings Canis Major to the Cedar stage for the first time. Dave Adewumi (trumpet)\, Henry Fraser (bass)\, Tomas Fujiwara (drums) round out the quartet. \nThere’s a theory of record production that says the best results come shortly after musicians have encountered a piece for the first time. That’s when it’s possible to get the intuitive reaction\, before players develop a frame of reference. First thought\, best thought. \nAn opposite theory holds that the magic happens later\, after the ensemble has absorbed the material. That’s when the musicians can lean into its nuances\, leveraging familiarity into swagger. \nMary Halvorson’s dramatic\, daringly intricate new album About Ghosts suggests that these approaches can be complementary. The eight-song work is the guitarist and composer’s fourth full-length with her sextet Amaryllis—plus saxophonists Immanuel Wilkins and Brian Settles. Halvorson wrote some of the music for the core group in 2023\, and then\, following what she describes as a snap impulse\, experimented with a piece for four horns instead of two. Just to try it.

SUMMARY:Ladysmith Black Mambazo at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people\, singing a message of peace\, love and harmony. With their 2024 release\, Soothe My Soul… Songs From Our South African Church\, the group puts their spin on gospel music. \nThe year 2025 marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of Joseph Shabalala forming Ladysmith Black Mambazo. His group conquered all of South Africa and would become a worldwide phenomenon. Further\, they won more Grammy Awards (five) and have received more nominations (nineteen) than any World music group. \nDuring the dark years of South African Apartheid\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo followed a path of peaceful protest. Here\, they did this through songs of hope and love. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990\, he said he listened to their music while in jail. Additionally\, he was inspired by their powerful message of peace. Thus\, when Mandela won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize\, he asked the group to join him at the ceremony. It was Mandela who called Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.” \nIn the mid-1980s\, American singer/songwriter Paul Simon famously visited South Africa. There\, he incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into his renowned Graceland album. This became a landmark recording\, considered seminal in introducing World music to mainstream audiences. Furthermore\, this brought the group to the attention of music lovers all over the world. \nAfter leading his group for over fifty years and approaching his seventy-fifth birthday\, Joseph Shabalala retired in 2014\, handing the leadership to his three sons\, Thulani\, Sibongiseni and Thamsanqa Shabalala.  \nLadysmith Black Mambazo is Thulani Shabalala\, Sibongiseni Shabalala\, Thamsanqa Shabalala\, Msizi Shabalala\, Albert Mazibuko\, Abednego Mazibuko\, Mfanafuthi Dlamini\, Pius Shezi and Sabelo Mthembu.

DESCRIPTION:Yagody is a Ukrainian group dedicated to performing both traditional and contemporary folk music from the East. \n“A concert with Yagódy is a ritual … there is the breathing of the wind in the field\, a sound like the voice of our ancestors. The listeners are enveloped in living energy and musical trance. A dance of voices in the pulse of humanity.” — Internationales Donaufest \nThe music of the band “YAGODY” is a sign of initiation. It is the wind in the wilderness. It is the songs of wild tribes. This is the voice of your ancestors. This is live energy. It is a dance with voices. This is how our nature smells. This is how our blood sounds. \nOur project “YAGODY” appeared in June 2016. As is typical for everything real\, the band appeareth spontaneously. As if it was meant to be. For the group’s sake\, we took up a lot of musical instruments and looked through a lot of lyrics to find our song\, our ritual.  And now it has finally come! \nOur music is filled with Ukrainian sound and Balkan motifs. It is important to us that the lyrics that flow in you\, are also sound on your lips. Our music is the letters from the past that you did not receive. \nAnd also our music is about us. Four women with different temperaments and experiences. Zoriana Dybovska (percussion)\, Sofiia Leshyshak (djembe)\, Nadiia Parashchuk (accordion)\, and Tetiana Voitiv (drymba and Tibetan bowl). We are completely different from each other\, and that is why the name of our band begins with the sound “YA”. In Ukrainian it means “Me”. We are similar in our differences. \nIn short\, “YAGODY” is a way inside yourself. Into your heart. In our music\, everything is united into a single whole. Returning to the home of your ancestors becomes possible. In addition\, he has been arranging music for NBC The Voice.\nAs a resident of the Twin Cities\, Adi has served as a pianist and musical director for the late world-class jazz vocalist Debbie Duncan for nearly 3 decades. He also performed with countless Twin Cities vocalists such as Dennis Spears\, Ginger Commodore\, Gwen Matthews\, Bruce Henry\, Cookie Coleman\, and many others. He has been commissioned by many organizations\, including Minnesota Orchestra\, the Guthrie Theater\, Doc Severinsen Big Band\, and the Swiss Youth Orchestra – Jazzaar.\nAdi has been active as an educator\, as well. He taught at Berklee College of Music\, the University of Minnesota and McNally Smith College of Music (St. Paul\, MN).
