DESCRIPTION:Yagody is a Ukrainian group dedicated to performing both traditional and contemporary folk music from the East. \n“A concert with Yagódy is a ritual … there is the breathing of the wind in the field\, a sound like the voice of our ancestors. The listeners are enveloped in living energy and musical trance. A dance of voices in the pulse of humanity.” — Internationales Donaufest \nThe music of the band “YAGODY” is a sign of initiation. It is the wind in the wilderness. It is the songs of wild tribes. This is the voice of your ancestors. This is live energy. It is a dance with voices. This is how our nature smells. This is how our blood sounds. \nOur project “YAGODY” appeared in June 2016. As is typical for everything real\, the band appeareth spontaneously. As if it was meant to be. For the group’s sake\, we took up a lot of musical instruments and looked through a lot of lyrics to find our song\, our ritual.  And now it has finally come! \nOur music is filled with Ukrainian sound and Balkan motifs. It is important to us that the lyrics that flow in you\, are also sound on your lips. Our music is the letters from the past that you did not receive. \nAnd also our music is about us. Four women with different temperaments and experiences. Zoriana Dybovska (percussion)\, Sofiia Leshyshak (djembe)\, Nadiia Parashchuk (accordion)\, and Tetiana Voitiv (drymba and Tibetan bowl). We are completely different from each other\, and that is why the name of our band begins with the sound “YA”. In Ukrainian it means “Me”. We are similar in our differences. \nIn short\, “YAGODY” is a way inside yourself. Into your heart. In our music\, everything is united into a single whole. Returning to the home of your ancestors becomes possible. He has been commissioned by many organizations\, including Minnesota Orchestra\, the Guthrie Theater\, Doc Severinsen Big Band\, and the Swiss Youth Orchestra – Jazzaar.\nAdi has been active as an educator\, as well. Now that we have moved in\, we are bringing music back to the former Radio Theater\, and kicking off a series of concerts to showcase smaller local acts as well as raise money for worthy causes. This month’s concert’s proceeds will all go to The Salt Cure Restaurant Relief Fund which is helping Twin Cities restaurants bounce back. \nCome and enjoy a night of beautiful music while supporting a good cause in a historic venue!

Kuroda has not missed a beat since the release of 2022’s Midnight Crisp –– a record PopMatters called a “future classic”. Now\, the 45-year-old musician desires to achieve the “perfect blend of production and organic performance”. It’s why he continues to throw himself into his daily practice\, nearly thirty years into his musical life. \nEveryday builds on and dives ever deeper into the hip hop and neo-soul elements of his previous work. Here\, it is a deliciously rhythmic enterprise and a triumph of genre-blending modern jazz. Moreover\, Kuroda’s playing is sure-footed and pure –– whether on the horn\, synth\, or Rhodes. He virtuosically dances among infectious rhythms of his own creation.  \nKuroda’s twenty-one years in the United States have been fruitful. After studying composition at The New School\, he threw himself into work. There\, he played with DJ Premier’s Badder Band and Akoya Afrobeat and recorded as a sideman and bandleader. But as Kuroda himself says\, “the only way to make the music that I want to make is to work hard\, every day.” And so we have Everyday\, a title which reflects\, as Kuroda puts it\, “that simple message.” \nEveryday is hyperaware of a panoply of old ideas and a pantheon of old gods. However\, as Kuroda engages these tropes and personalities day in and day out\, he turns it all around in a style that’s undeniably cool and personal. As Pitchfork put it\, “Kuroda’s skill is not drawing influence from so many different forms\, it’s radiating joy in doing so.” It’s this sterling dedication that makes Takuya Kuroda and Everyday anything but commonplace.

DESCRIPTION:After a year and a half break in live performances from March 2020 through July 2021 due to the pandemic\, Parisota Hot Club and the Robb Henry Trio are back to work once again. See the dates page for upcoming 2022 performances. \nAlthough best known for his recent work with Parisota Hot Club\, a band he formed in 2001 to explore the music and jazz guitar stylings of French guitarist Django Reinhardt\, Robb’s musical background includes a diverse range of experience. \nRobb’s guitar playing odyssey began in the autumn of 1966 at the age of thirteen when he joined up with the Surfers\, an established teenage rock band from the Hopkins/Minnetonka area. The popular group played many teen dances in the western suburbs of Minneapolis\, recorded a self-produced 45\, and appeared on local KMSP 9 television show “Organ Notes” in late 1966 before dissolving in early 1968. \nLater in the summer of that year\, he fell in with a group of young blues fanatics through a new acquaintance\, singer and blues harp player Reg Clow. This group eventually hooked up with blues singer and harp player Mojo Buford in the winter of 1968-69 and played with him through the summer of 1970. This experience with Mojo\, a Chicago style blues artist and close associate of the legendary Muddy Waters\, proved to be a major influence in Robb’s solo guitar work. Mojo served as a mentor to many young blues players during his time in the Twin Cities. \nIn early 1971 Robb was brought into the Top Forty danceband Brave New World by his old Surfers bandmate Bob Fisher. Worked lounges\, nightclubs\, and bars throughout the 1970’s with groups including Brave New World\, Walter Mitty\, The Philadelphia Story soul review at the Flame Bar\, Inside Straight and Sweet Thing. Gigged at the Longhorn bar with Fingerprints and recorded on Twin/Tone Records. Relocated to Chicago ’79-’84\, worked with songwriter Jessie Roe\, country singer Kent Rose\, legendary new wave singer Jim Desmond\, R&B funk group Frankie Hill and Metropol\, and back to the blues with Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report from Gary\, Indiana. \nRelocated back to Minneapolis at the end of 1984\, recorded and played gigs with Tom Bright. Briefly fronted a blues-rock trio called World Wide Hoodoo. Played jazz and pop in the ’90’s with corporate and wedding bands\, did blues gigs and recorded with Cooker John band\, explored new styles and material in solo guitar coffeehouse gigs from 1994 through 2002\, also began teaching private guitar lessons on a regular basis in early 1995 ….met French expatriate and violinist Raphaël Fraisse in 2001 and voila! DESCRIPTION:The Upper Midwest Flute Association is holding their annual Flute Fest on Saturday April 11\, 2026 from 9:00AM – 6:00PM at Hill-Murray School\, 2526 Larpenteur Ave E\, Maplewood\, MN 55109. \nFlute Fest is an annual UMFA event dedicated to our love of the flute. Each year we feature an inspiring guest artist\, who typically gives a masterclass for selected flutists and performs a recital. \nThe day includes recitals\, workshops\, competitions\, and exhibits\, as well as opportunities for participation\, so bring your flute! For a quick overview of the day\, check out our brief Schedule of Events. The Flute Fest Program contains session descriptions\, recital programs\, and presenter biographies. \nIt is also a fabulous day to shop for flutes and flute music from our many knowledgeable exhibitors. Having racked up views on their MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar suites and as guests on the YouTube series “Live at Emmet’s Place\,” this NYC-based trio is known for their internet savvy and musical chops. \nBand Members:\nAbdias Armenteros – Sax\nSebastian Rios – Bass\nTJ Reddick – Drums \n⊹ \nNew Jazz Underground\, an American trio\, have been described as “an innovative and ultra-creative collective striving to establish themselves as a defining voice for the genre of jazz and beyond.” Their music signals a merging of traditional sensibilities in jazz with the modern influence of swing\, hip-hop\, house\, and Afro-Cuban music. \nMillions have been introduced to the trio’s undeniably fresh sound through viral videos of the band performing in their living room. Videos such as “they can hate but we still swingin’\,” “f**k/s**t/c**t/jazz\,” and “sad boy jazz” feature the band’s exuberant chemistry\, effortless musicality\, and raw ambition in sound. \nAbdias Armenteros\, Sebastian Rios\, and TJ Reddick have been lauded as some of jazz’s most promising young artists in their own right. After meeting while students at The Juilliard School\, the trio began playing in the parks of New York City during lockdown in 2020. They have since performed as New Jazz Underground at venues including Dizzy’s Club and Birdland\, and Reddick and Rios have played as sidemen for the likes of Jon Batiste\, Sullivan Fortner\, and Emmet Cohen.

SUMMARY:Joyce Lyons with Phil Aaron\, Dan Carpel\, Jay Epstein
DESCRIPTION:Born to perform\, Joyce Lyons doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t on stage\, performing in a choir\, club act or theater piece.\nImmediately after graduating from high school\, Joyce headed west to attend Colorado Women’s College and immersed herself in the music and theater departments. She studied voice (pop\, musical theater and even classical)\, and piano\, and then fell hard for the theater. Cast as the Emcee in the musical “Cabaret” to glowing reviews by The Denver Post\, her path was clear.\nThe east coast beckoned again\, and Joyce spent a year in the Washington\, D.C. area\, and performing in local theater\, notably in a production of Godspell. She soon jumped to the Big Apple\, collecting roles in Tintypes\, Sophisticated Ladies\, Little Shop of Horrors and Company to name a few.\nCabaret clubs and the intimacy of the smaller venue proved to be just the right fit for Joyce. A slight detour into stand-up was fun and challenging (kept looking for the piano player) but it is the small stage that continues to call her back.\nA chance meeting with Associate Justice Clarence Thomas led to a special performance at the Supreme Court. Joyce has become a regular performer at the world famous spa\, Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires\, and most recently has added the luxurious Miraval Tucson Resort and Spa to her repeat request list.\nJoyce recorded her first jazz CD (Sooner or Later)\, at the renowned Nola Recording Studios\, an experience which sent her in an entirely new direction. Joyce has worked with many of the most distinguished artists in the business\, such as the late\, great\, Joe Beck\, Kenny Ascher\, Bucky Pizzarelli\, Jay Leonhart\, Lee Musiker\, Lou Marini and Al Gafa.\nIn addition to regularly performing at jazz clubs\, private parties\, Joyce has added appearances at Turning Stone Casino and Spa and has participated in the Jazz on the Hill Series at Fort Lewis College in Durango\, CO. Joyce added teaching to her repertoire with a master class on reading lyrics for vocal students. She has offered this class as part of the Artist in Residence Program at Fort Lewis College and New York City. Look for this class at colleges\, high schools and private venues nationally.\nChange continues to influence Joyce’s career. New reviews\, a soon-to-be released “live” recording\, and even relocation to the Midwest. Joyce now resides in the culturally reach environs of Minneapolis and is excited to explore exciting new opportunities among the many jazz and theater venues.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Jazz Legends will honor Arne Fogel. Fogel can be heard here on Jazz88 and is a vocalist. Honoree Gary Gauger is the drummer of our group.
