DESCRIPTION:Rick Carlson taught himself to play the piano by studying the vast works of Count Basie and Duke Ellington and capitalizing on a long string of happy accidents. He has also perfected the art of “circular drinking”\, whereby he can sip martinis uninterrupted while still playing a cohesive piano solo. He has been the pianist for the Wolverines Big Band since 1980. He has performed on concert stages in London and New York City\, and has appeared with Count Basie drummer Butch Miles\, horn stars Warren Vaché\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, Evan Christopher and Wycliffe Gordon. His credits as musical director\, arranger and pianist include the Guthrie Theater presentation of “Coward’s Women”\, the Capri Theater “Legends Series” and in various concert and cabaret presentations internationally. He once opened for Rosemary Clooney\, accompanied Kathryn Crosby in various cabaret shows\, and counts Madeleine Peyroux among his many unwitting fans.

DESCRIPTION:After a year and a half break in live performances from March 2020 through July 2021 due to the pandemic\, Parisota Hot Club and the Robb Henry Trio are back to work once again. See the dates page for upcoming 2022 performances. \nAlthough best known for his recent work with Parisota Hot Club\, a band he formed in 2001 to explore the music and jazz guitar stylings of French guitarist Django Reinhardt\, Robb’s musical background includes a diverse range of experience. \nRobb’s guitar playing odyssey began in the autumn of 1966 at the age of thirteen when he joined up with the Surfers\, an established teenage rock band from the Hopkins/Minnetonka area. The popular group played many teen dances in the western suburbs of Minneapolis\, recorded a self-produced 45\, and appeared on local KMSP 9 television show “Organ Notes” in late 1966 before dissolving in early 1968. \nLater in the summer of that year\, he fell in with a group of young blues fanatics through a new acquaintance\, singer and blues harp player Reg Clow. This group eventually hooked up with blues singer and harp player Mojo Buford in the winter of 1968-69 and played with him through the summer of 1970. This experience with Mojo\, a Chicago style blues artist and close associate of the legendary Muddy Waters\, proved to be a major influence in Robb’s solo guitar work. Mojo served as a mentor to many young blues players during his time in the Twin Cities. \nIn early 1971 Robb was brought into the Top Forty danceband Brave New World by his old Surfers bandmate Bob Fisher. Worked lounges\, nightclubs\, and bars throughout the 1970’s with groups including Brave New World\, Walter Mitty\, The Philadelphia Story soul review at the Flame Bar\, Inside Straight and Sweet Thing. Gigged at the Longhorn bar with Fingerprints and recorded on Twin/Tone Records. Relocated to Chicago ’79-’84\, worked with songwriter Jessie Roe\, country singer Kent Rose\, legendary new wave singer Jim Desmond\, R&B funk group Frankie Hill and Metropol\, and back to the blues with Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report from Gary\, Indiana. \nRelocated back to Minneapolis at the end of 1984\, recorded and played gigs with Tom Bright. Briefly fronted a blues-rock trio called World Wide Hoodoo. Played jazz and pop in the ’90’s with corporate and wedding bands\, did blues gigs and recorded with Cooker John band\, explored new styles and material in solo guitar coffeehouse gigs from 1994 through 2002\, also began teaching private guitar lessons on a regular basis in early 1995 ….met French expatriate and violinist Raphaël Fraisse in 2001 and voila! DESCRIPTION:Bryan Nichols is a pianist\, composer\, and educator based in Minneapolis. Often found playing jazz and improvised music\, but at home in a variety of musical worlds\, he leads and composes for his own trio\, quintet\, and nonet in addition to performing\, recording\, and touring with forward-thinking artists like Nicole Mitchell\, Ron Miles\, and Olga Bell\, and groups like the Gang Font\, Dead Man Winter\, and Halloween\, Alaska. He has taught jazz piano at MacPhail Center for Music\, University of Minnesota – Morris\, and University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire\, while presenting clinics and masterclasses at a variety of colleges and high schools around the midwest.\nBryan was awarded a 2010-11 McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians\, a prestigious and competitive award given to Minnesota musicians. His work also earned him a 2004 residency from Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center\, given to outstanding\, emerging jazz performer/composers\, and a 2009 subito grant from the American Composers Forum. In May 2011 Bryan released his debut recording as a leader\, Bright Places\, containing nine original compositions for his quintet. The Star Tribune called the album “fresh and first-rate” and it landed on multiple best-of-year lists. In September 2011\, he had the honor of performing as a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra for the world premiere of a Stephen Paulus’ concerto for jazz quintet and orchestra.\nBryan has performed at most music venues in the Twin Cities and Chicago (where he lived from 2001-2005\,) in addition to international festivals including Sons d’Hiver (Paris\, France) and Kerava Jazz Festival (Kerava\, Finland) and local and regional festivals including the Chicago Jazz Festival and the Minnesota Sur Seine Festival. He’s been a regular performer on series like SPCO’s Liquid Music\, and Orchestra Hall’s Atrium Jazz Series. Bryan appears on recent recordings by Zacc Harris\, MANCRUSH\, Molly Dean\, Dead Man Winter\, Gang Font\, Kelly Rossum\, and many more. His most recent album\, a solo piano endeavor entitled Looking North\, was released in May 2016 on Shifting Paradigm Records.

Her passion for music often results in culturally diverse collaborations alongside some of Minnesota’s most accomplished musicians. Steele exploded onto the Minnesota music scene in the mid 1980’s along with Prince\, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Then\, Mr. Steele and his dynamic vocal siblings\, The Steeles\, garnered every major music award Minnesota has to offer.  \nBilly Steele performs\, writes\, and produces for the Grammy-winning ensemble Sounds of Blackness. Additionally\, he appears on soundtracks with artists such as Rod Stewart and Luther Vandross.  \nLarry Long is an American singer-songwriter who has made his life work the celebration of everyday heroes. Here\, author and historian Studs Terkel called Larry “a true American troubadour.” When America’s foremost folksinger\, Pete Seeger\, learned that Long was called the Pete Seeger of Minneapolis\, Seeger chuckled. “I’d be proud to be known as ‘the Larry Long of New York.’”

The group went on to create epic\, sold-out shows at the Guthrie\, the State\, O’Shaughnessy\, and the Ordway\, and their historic Soviet Peace Tour of 1988. \nSingers Jearlyn Steele\, Ginger Commodore\, Mary Jane Alm\, Kathy Mueller\, Gwen Matthews and Prudence Johnson come together once more. They will be backed by Women Who Cook veterans Jane Henderson on keyboards and Jane Aleckson on bass\, Laurie Glaser on trumpet\, and Sue Roberts on trombone. Coming on board for this reunion show are saxophonist Sue Orfield\, pianist Mary Louise Knutson and drummer Sheila Earley. There will be a special tribute to former members Jeanne Arland Peterson and Kathy Jensen. \nWomen Who Cook distinguishes itself with its phenomenal musicianship and intricate vocal arrangements\, and the beautiful energy and warmth that come from its all-woman lineup. As he plays\, he listens to how ideas unwind\, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch\, whether it expresses itself in a beginning\, an end\, or something left intentionally open-ended. DESCRIPTION:Lila Ammons\, a native of Chicago\, has had many musical influences from family to a myriad of musicians and from the musical styles of Mozart to Monk. And she has inherited an illustrious legacy through the gifts of her grandfather and uncle: Albert Ammons (piano) and Gene Ammons (tenor sax).\nAmmons was previously based in New York City where she attended graduate school at the Manhattan School of Music\, and for 13 years performed opera\, oratorio and recitals around the US and Europe. It was then that she began her international travels through music. But\, she had other musical passions and decided that she needed to pursue them. In 1997\, excited to work on her new craft\, she packed up and left New York for Minneapolis\, Minnesota to be near family and there\, she has cultivated a career in jazz.\nFrom 2007-2018 she has toured internationally singing classic blues and boogie woogie in major concert halls\, international jazz and blues festivals\, theaters and jazz clubs throughout Austria\, Germany\, Switzerland\, The Netherlands\, Brazil\, Bulgaria\, Italy\, France\, Belgium\, England. In the US she performed in Chicago\, New York City\, Cincinnati\, Ohio\, Ann Arbor and Detroit Michigan\, and Houston\, Texas. Still not quite satisfied that she was realizing her dream\, in 2015 Lila began reducing her classic blues touring to focus on the jazz music she truly loves. And in 2016 she began receiving international invitations to perform as a solo jazz singer in England\, Ireland\, France and Spain.\nSince 2007\, Ammons has worked with numerous internationally acclaimed musicians such as\, Axel Zwingenberger\, Charlie Watts\, Ben Waters\, Jools Holland\, Chris Jagger\, Judy Carmichael\, Sonny Leyland\, Bruce Barth\, and Tony Sola\, to name a few. In the Twin Cities\, she performs with many of the area’s best jazz and blues instrumentalists.

Here\, they showcase new arrangements largely drawn from the trumpeter’s signature 1960’s period. Furthermore\, from introspective moods to free interplay and dramatic shifts\, Artemis presents a fascinating look at the many moods of Miles. \nArtemis—named for the Greek goddess—is a multinational ensemble of jazz instrumental virtuosos. Pianist and composer Renee Rosnes founded the group in 2017. Now\, its current lineup includes pianist Renee Rosnes\, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen\, tenor saxophonist Nicole Glover\, bassist Noriko Ueda\, and drummer Allison Miller. Here\, each member is an accomplished bandleader with a major career and a prolific body of work. \nThe group’s third release\, 2025’s Arboresque\, features original songs by all members with fresh arrangements of classic material. Then\, The Guardian named the recording one of its Top Ten Jazz Albums of 2025. There\, they praised its “cliché-free individuality and congenial collective spirit radiantly combined.” Thus\, the band’s popularity has continued to grow through performances at major festivals and venues worldwide. Moreover\, they delivered a powerful appearance in May 2025 on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series. There\, NPR hailed Artemis as “a killer line-up of players\, composers and performers… who converge on an extremely cosmopolitan\, sleek\, rhythm-forward\, modern sound.” \nFurther\, DownBeat magazine’s Annual Readers Poll voted Artemis Jazz Group of the Year for three consecutive years (2023–2025). Additionally\, the Jazz Journalists Association named them Mid-Size Ensemble of the Year in both 2024 and 2025.

Cash\, check\, Venmo\, Paypal accepted.\nThis performance is not wheelchair accessible.\n(Aaron is not performing at this show -but please attend to see amazing experimental jazz!) \nNoah Ophoven-Baldwin is an experimental composer and plays cornet with the group Realtree\, with recent releases on Public Eyesore Records\, Zoomin’ Night\, Zappak\, and Aloe Records. He has worked with musicians such as George Cartwright\, TJ Bordon\, Wayne Horvitz\, Michelle Kinney\, Paul Metzger\, Tatsuya Nakatani and Zhu Wenbo. Noah is based out of Minneapolis and runs the label All Sky. \nAdam Linz is a well-known bass player in the Twin Cities jazz scene. He co-leads the internationally award-winning group Fat Kid Wednesdays with childhood friends Mike Lewis and JT Bates\, touring extensively throughout Europe and North America. Adam has taught at Macalester College\, Augsburg College\, Minnesota Institute for Talented Youth and EDAM Music outreach in Paris\, and has given clinics in places such as Chile\, Argentina\, Seattle\, New York\, Houston\, Germany\, and Switzerland. He is currently the Jazz Studies Program coordinator and electric and acoustic bass instructor at MacPhail Center for the Arts in Minneapolis. Adam has performed with such jazz greats as Evan Parker\, Stanley Turrentine\, Milt Jackson\, and electronic artist\, Dosh.

Drummer Joe Pulice\, one of the region’s elite musicians\, is a two-time Minnesota Jazz Music Award recipient. Also\, in 1986\, Joe toured with Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd.  \nDuring the 1990’s\, Joe played vibes and percussion with world-renowned drummer Eric Kamau Gravatt’s group\, Kamanari. Joe also played with Jack McDuff and his band\, The Heatin’ System. Additionally\, Joe has been the drummer for the JazzMN Orchestra for the last twenty years. \nRicky Peterson is one of the most sought-after studio and session keyboard players and producers in America. Furthermore\, Ricky tours with Fleetwood Mac\, Bonnie Raitt\, John Mayer and currently with Stevie Nicks.
