SUMMARY:Robert Glasper at Dakota Jazz Club Night 2
DESCRIPTION:Robert Glasper is the leader of a new sonic paradigm with a career that bridges musical and artistic genres. To date\, he boasts five Grammy wins and sixteen nominations across eleven categories. Additionally\, he received an Emmy for his song for Ava Duvernay’s critically hailed documentary 13th with Common and Karriem Riggins. His work and accolades bridge all aspects of the music business\, from live touring to film scoring\, composing and producing. \nEvolution is his hallmark. Glasper’s breakout crossover album Black Radio changed the face of the genre and set a new expectation for what popular music could be. Then\, the album won him the Grammy for best R&B album. Further\, it established him as the musician of choice for some of the world’s most iconic artists. Glasper played keys throughout Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp A Butterfly\, winning another Grammy for the elastic track “These Walls”. The ongoing Black Radio series has become Glasper’s calling card\, upholding a place at the heart of a trailblazing community. Collaborators range from long-time sonic brothers Mos Def and Bilal to legends including Ledisi\, Lupe Fiasco\, Kanye West\, Jill Scott\, and Erykah Badu. \nGlasper’s eternal pursuit to further his sound has been consistent in challenging and transforming his creative horizons across the board. Whether producing a remix album with Kaytranda or as a bandleader\, Robert consistently defies the limits of the genre. Moreover\, this is evident in his expansive portfolio and range of projects. His acoustic trio simultaneously defies and elevates the traditional idiom\, uniting it effortlessly with electronics from visionary DJ Jahi Sundance. August Greene is a collaboration with Common + Karriem Riggins. R+R=Now is a new supergroup at the crossroads of hip-hop and jazz.

SUMMARY:One-Man Shows & Immaculate Flows w/ L.A. Buckner & Midwest James at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Friends and collaborators L.A. Buckner and Midwest James will showcase their semi-autobiographical theater pieces and exceptional musical skills. The showcase will include “Things You Can’t See\,”  a one-man show written and performed by L.A. Buckner and directed by James Gavins\, followed by the Afrofuturistic one-man show “Cicada\,” written and performed by James Gavins and co-directed by Karl Michael Iglesias. The night will end with a talkback and a special music experience by the duo. \n⊹ \n“Things You Can’t See” follows Minneapolis-based drummer L.A. Buckner as he navigates the unseen truths of life as a Black musician performing in predominantly white wedding reception spaces. Blending personal stories\, sharp humor\, and dynamic live performance\, the piece unpacks the layers of cultural expectation\, artistic resilience\, and identity within the world of professional music. \n“Cicada” is an Afrofuturistic multimedia theatrical performance adapted from the stage play created by James D. Gavins and Karl Michael Iglesias. Through storytelling\, music\, movement\, and comedy\, the story follows James in a parallel universe as he goes through the process to receive his reparations. He has been chosen to beta test CICADA\, a psychotherapy simulator\, that claims to ease the trauma from black history in America. \n⊹ \nL.A. Buckner is a performing musician\, teaching artist\, and producer from the Northside of Minneapolis. He holds a master’s degree in music performance from McNally Smith College of Music and is a community partnership instructor for the MacPhail Center for Music. His artistry is full of energy\, excitement\, culture and excellence. \nJames D. Gavins\, aka Midwest James\, is an interdisciplinary artist born and raised between Chicago and Minneapolis. In 2008\, Gavins was granted the First Wave Hip Hop & Urban Arts Scholarship and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where he earned a B.A. in theater and drama. There\, he facilitated film\, theater\, and music programs with youth. Gavins also tours with the ShapeShift Theatrical Dance Company as a performer and creative collaborator. He premiered his interdisciplinary theater show “Cicada” in 2019 and went on to develop and perform it as a performance-integrated film at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. SUMMARY:MGS Jazz and Fingerstyle Series Concert
DESCRIPTION:Tim Sparks has been redefining the acoustic guitar repertoire since he won the National Fingerpicking Championship in 1993 with a ground-breaking arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Sparks continues to surprise\, challenge\, and thrill audiences with his diverse repertoire and stunning technique. Equally at home with Country Blues\, Jazz or World Music\, Sparks’ extraordinary ability has earned him an international reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists working today. \nTom Lieberman’s songs have been heard from Sesame Street to Sweet Land. He is an original member of the seminal vocal jazz trio Rio Nido and was associated with public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion from 1976-86\, where he worked variously as a performer\, writer and utility infielder until he was “asked” to hand over the show’s guitar chair to the Country Gentleman himself\, Chet Atkins. He is currently the creator of the musical story world of Ukulele Alley and the voice of “everybody’s favorite talking ukulele\,” Luke the Uke. \nAt age 11\, Ben Abrahamson found his path set ablaze by guitar heroes Paco de Lucía\, Leo Kottke\, Ralph Towner\, and his first guitar teacher Gary Lee Joyner. Ben has studied with flamenco guitarists Juan Ramón Caro at Taller de Músics in Barcelona\, Pedro Cortés\, Jr.\, and Michael Hauser. Ben is a faculty member at MacPhail Center for Music and a teaching artist with the MGS Guitar In Our Schools program.

SUMMARY:Kenny Reichert’s Letters From the Road: Colours Quintet at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Kenny Reichert has spent much of the past decade on the road: driving across North America and Europe\, sharing meals with bandmates\, and performing gig after gig. His original music has been shaped by those travels and the people he has met along the way. Now based between Minneapolis and Chicago\, Reichert will be bringing time-tested and brand-new ensembles to Berlin in Minneapolis and North Street Cabaret in Madison\, WI\, every weekend in May. \nOriginally conceived during a residency at the Ragdale Foundation\, the Colours Quintet music draws from Reichert’s time spent walking and observing the prairie landscape. This is some of his most detailed and structurally ambitious writing\, balancing through-composed material with space for individual voice. \nBand Members:\nKenny Reichert – Guitar\nRuss Johnson – Trumpet\nGeof Bradfield – Saxophone\nTim Ipsen – Bass\nDevin Drobka – Drums \n⊹ \nRecognized by DownBeat magazine as “a distinctive player and composer\,” Kenny Reichert has established himself as a compelling guitarist with an expressive\, refined approach to his instrument. His artistry has been praised by All About Jazz as “masterly without being showy\,” and Textura has lauded his compositions for making an “immediate impression” and “warranting repeat engagement.” \nBased between Chicago and Minneapolis\, Reichert is an in-demand performer who has collaborated with artists such as Russ Johnson\, Geof Bradfield\, Lenard Simpson\, Clark Sommers\, Ethan Philion\, John Christensen\, Devin Drobka\, Ana Everling\, and Alyssa Allgood. He has performed at venues and festivals across the United States and Europe\, bringing his music to audiences in intimate and large-scale settings. \nReichert has released four albums as a leader. His latest\, Live in Chicago\, features his longtime collaborators and their deep musical interactions. His previous albums Switch (2024\, Calligram Records); Deep Breath (2023\, Shifting Paradigm Records); and Interpretations (2015)\, cemented his reputation as a forward-thinking guitarist and composer.

SUMMARY:Joe Policastro Trio at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:The Joe Policastro Trio is a forward-thinking\, Chicago-based jazz trio hailed by DownBeat for its “deft analysis of choice repertoire” and by the Chicago Reader for its “diversity of approaches to all kinds of source material.” While firmly rooted in jazz\, the band’s open-minded\, inclusive nature draws upon a wide array of musical styles and sources while keeping the aesthetic of an acoustic trio intact. \nThe band recently released its seventh album\, Mending Wall. Through highly personal readings of music from Italy and Hong Kong\, movie scores and symphonic themes\, pop tunes\, and even a cowboy song written by a Russian classical composer\, the trio explores the nature of identity\, boundaries\, and borders. Their diverse catalog—Ceremony (2023)\, Sounds Unheard (2022)\, Nothing Here Belongs (2019)\, Screen Sounds (2017)\, POPS! (2016)\, and West Side Story Suite (2013)—captures the band’s progressive\, forward-thinking\, non-hierarchical approach\, whether they are showcasing their original music or remaking unlikely songs in a characteristically raw\, idiosyncratic fashion. \nTrue bands are a rarity in jazz these days\, especially ones that hone their craft as consistently as this one does. The band held court thrice-weekly at Pops for Champagne in downtown Chicago for over a decade. Beyond Chicago\, the trio has been extensively playing together at clubs and festivals throughout the United States and Canada. \nBand Members:\nJoe Policastro – Bass\nDave Miller – Guitar\nMikel Avery – Drums

SUMMARY:DEBUT: Mississippi Hot Club at Crooners
DESCRIPTION:This Dunsmore room performance will include selections by Django Reinhardt\, Jazz Manouche standards\, and the unique arrangements and energy that Mississippi Hot Club has become known for. This audience will also have the rare opportunity to see bandleader Joshua Parlanti set down the guitar and dazzle us with his exceptional piano chops! \nJoshua Parlanti is the bandleader and lead guitarist. Trained as a classical pianist\, he is a self-taught master guitarist\, most notably in the style of Django Reinhardt. Joshua now works as a professional sound engineer and producer at Wild Sound Recording Studio. \nAlissa “Big Al” Jacobsen is a force to be reckoned with. Farmer by day and violin slayer by night\, Big Al truly dazzles the crowd with her endless energy and syncopated riffs. You may also catch her playing bluegrass at the bar or a square dance at the local hall. \nIan Stenlund has beenplaying in bands of all genres for more than 17 years. In MHC\, he “plays the drums on guitar” in the la pompe technique\, which gives gypsy jazz it’s unique swing sound. By day\, he owns his own business\, delivering mobile saunas. \nJoseph Downing grew up in a family of musicians in Northern MN. Other than playing bass like a total boss\, he also is a song-writer\, guitar player\, tattoo removal specialist\, and runs a motorcycle repair garage. And he has 3 dogs. \nMississippi Hot Club showcases the distinct style of music pioneered by maestro guitarist Django Reinhardt during the 1930s-1940s in Paris\, France. This hot club is an all string jazz ensemble with la pompe rhythm guitar\, upright bass\, and the lively improvisation of a solo guitar and violin. \nStaying true to the 1930s hot club sound\, MHC also adds a healthy spread of modern twists. During a live set\, you can expect them to play romantic ballads\, American jazz standards\, European folk\, and science fiction theme songs. This troupe is sure to get you swinging with their virtuosic style and expert arrangements.

SUMMARY:Southside Aces: A Night in New Orleans at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, Southside Aces have been playing the repertoire of the Jazz Age greats and beyond. Here\, they play the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton and the Chicago joys of Louis Armstrong. The evocative compositions of the young Duke Ellington to the barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall. Even the early rock and roll of Fats Domino! Their belief in the contemporary vitality of New Orleans music can be heard in their eighth album\, 2022’s Minneapolis Bump. Here\, this album contains fifteen originals in the traditional style. The Aces will release two more albums in 2026\, including Les Oignons\, featuring the music of Sidney Bechet. You hear it all when you’re in front of the Aces. Moreover\, treat yourself to a century’s worth of New Orleans jazz. \nIn New Orleans\, the jazz tradition thrives off a wide array of styles. Here\, the Aces possess a diverse repertoire\, with a roll call that includes jazz giants. For example\, Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Hoagy Carmichael\, Duke Ellington\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Additionally\, Crescent City classics like “Bourbon Street Parade”\, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”\, and “St. James Infirmary”. Also\, they cover the funky rhythms of brass band powerhouses like “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Palm Court Strut”! \n“Some 1500 miles from New Orleans and the Mardi Gras\, and what do you think? It’s bouncing around the Mississippi River up here close to the Northern Star.” — Leigh Kamman\, The Jazz Image \n“The performers are virtuosi and flawlessly replicate the sound of classic New Orleans… The concert was wonderful and demonstrates the continued vitality of this sort of music.” — John Beckmann\, Prairie Uprising
