DESCRIPTION:Them Coulee Boys spent the past decade-plus establishing themselves as one of the Midwest’s premier purveyors of bluegrass and Americana. The Cedar is thrilled to welcome the Eau Claire-based band to our stage for the first time. \n“A rollicking blend of bluegrass\, folk\, and rock and roll” – Folk Alley \nSoren Staff and Beau Janke—co-founders of folk/rock/Americana outfit Them Coulee Boys—met as camp counselors in northern Wisconsin in 2011. Their weekend workshopping of Avett Brothers and classic country tunes led to original songs and adding Soren’s brother Jens on mandolin\, Neil Krause on electric bass and Stas Hable on drums. \nThe band’s name is a nod to the glacial melt-carved river valleys they call home\, known by early French fur trappers as coulees. Known for wild swings of emotion during sets\, it is not unusual to see fans in tears and minutes later dancing with abandon. The honesty and ability to talk and sing about the feelings and emotions that shape them has endeared them to a growing group of fans and friends. \nKiernan is the Minneapolis-based musical project of Laura Kiernan\, who is very excited to be playing with a band. Her indie folk tunes can be described as “sounds for when you’re feeding the pigeons.” In other words: soft\, silly\, spacious and best done with friends. She is joined by Nate LeBrun (Humbird\, Squinny) on drums\, Maddie Thies (anni xo\, Sister Species) on bass\, and Jared Johnson on guitar. The band released its first full length album in 2025\, after being named one of the Best New Bands by First Avenue that year. They’re excited to release more this year – they hope it nourishes your ears like a nice hunk of bread.

He has been involved with projects including Oddjobs\, Kill The Vultures\, Roma di Luna\, and Mixed Blood Majority\, and he has toured extensively alongside Atmosphere and Eyedea & Abilities. His performances are voice-forward and narrative-driven\, shaped by restraint\, intensity\, and years of live work. \nAndrew Broder has dedicated the better part of his life to carving out a singular path in music and art. A lifelong resident of Minneapolis\, MN\, Andrew has done time as a cutting battle DJ\, a challenging and thoughtful improviser\, a soundtrack composer\, a working sideman\, a producer\, a remixer\, a beat-maker\, a poet\, a beauty creator\, a brutal noisemonger\, and—above all—a fearless\, restless\, and provocative songwriter. His work is a study in surprise. As Fog\, he redefined the turntable as a compositional tool\, and his subsequent contributions to avant hip-hop\, rock\, jazz\, and noise have been equally engaging and envelope-pushing. He has released records on renowned indie labels—such as Ninja Tune\, Lex\, and Totally Gross National Product—and worked with an incredibly wide-ranging cast of artists\, including Bon Iver\, Poliça\, Marijuana Deathsquads\, Dua Saleh\, FPA\, Armand Hammer\, Serengeti\, The National\, and Dave King. \nDavu Seru is gaining an international reputation as a free jazz drummer. Seru appears on the record labels Insides Music\, Shih Shih Wu Ai\, Emanem\, Locust\, Roaratorio and Clean Feed. \nIs deVon Russell Gray a divinely guided multimedia social justice activist or a pantheistic audial alchemist? Central to his creative practice is starting from a place of “I know nothing” when approaching any new composition\, performance\, or creative endeavor. In his downtime\, he reluctantly participates in the commonplace mixed economy\, feeling frustrated by its limitations and yearning for something different. In his uptime\, he creates exceptional art. In terms of recent accomplishments\, Gray’s improvisation trio (featuring Nathan Hanson on saxophones\, Davu Seru on percussion\, and Gray on piano) released their debut album\, WE SICK\, on Innova in 2023. Additionally\, Gray made his mark as a composer with the lead single on Lara Downes’ latest album\, Love At Last (Pentatone)\, which reached number one on the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts. Most recently\, he received his second composer fellowship from the McKnight Foundation\, an esteemed recognition administered by the American Composers Forum.

She is an awardee of the McKnight Composer Fellowship\, Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship in Music\, the Princess Grace Award in Theater\, NPN Creation and Development Fund\, and a New Music USA Grant. Her recent residencies include Bogliasco\, Loghaven\, Camargo\, VCCA and Lanesboro Arts. Mary holds piano performance degrees from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and the Manhattan School of Music. She is a Steinway Artist. \n\n“…masterfully envisioned interdisciplinary work… a bright light cast forward.” – Washington Post\, “21 for ’21: Composers and Performers Who Sound Like Tomorrow” \n\n⊹ \nMay Klug is a Minneapolis-based composer/performer/improviser who explores the networks of technological development\, industry\, and modern social life through her deep relationships with pieces of audio equipment and electronic instruments. Her performances blend electroacoustic experimentalism with the visual aesthetics of pop\, high-femme fashion\, and camp theatrics. May’s primary electronic collaborators are Casio CZ-101 synthesizers\, through which she generates sounds that capture the natural process of memory loss in volatile RAM. She also has built a variety of feedback systems and works with Max/MSP. Her work celebrates the agency of these unpredictable machines. \nJo Kellen is a founding member of art-punk projects the Florists and Products Band. These projects have released more than 10 collective albums and EPs since 2015. As a primary songwriter\, lyricist\, and performer\, Jo’s work has been praised by outlets such as The Current\, Atwood Magazine\, Racket\, Brooklyn Vegan\, and Midwest Action for its sharp wit and inventive arrangements. Along the way\, they’ve traveled the country and shared stages with artists like Gang of Four\, Deerhoof\, A Savage\, DEHD\, and Water From Your Eyes. \n⊹ \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

DESCRIPTION:Trumpeter Riley Mulherkar returns to Berlin to share work from his singular\, sophisticated debut album\, Riley. Cellist Rebecca Merblum opens the show. \nBand Members:\nRiley Mulherkar – Trumpet\nChris Pattishall – Piano/Sound Design\nBarry Stephenson – Upright Bass\nJason Burger – Drums \n⊹ \nRiley Mulherkar is a founding member of the Westerlies and has played with everyone from Kenny Barron and Dee Dee Bridgewater to Anna Deavere Smith and Alan Cumming. In 2020\, he received Lincoln Center’s prestigious Emerging Artist Award for his work as “an original bandleader\, composer\, arranger\, educator\, community activist and advocate for jazz and the arts.” \nMulherkar’s album Riley was hailed by DownBeat as “über hip\, modern yet timeless…one of the best debut records to come out in a long\, long time.” Riley is the sonically modern setting for Mulherkar’s vulnerable\, melodious interpretation of the rich tradition with sound design shaped by producers Rafiq Bhatia and Chris Pattishall. Enveloping Mulherkar within a series of textured\, intricately-crafted spaces\, Bhatia and Pattishall train a cinematographer’s lens on the continuum of great old songs\, as well as new Mulherkar pieces\, which fit right into a radically bold audio framework for the emotional pronouncements of Mulherkar’s horn. \nMulherkar is an Edwards Artist and performs on Edwards trumpets. \n⊹ \nRebecca Merblum is a cellist dedicated to chamber music in its many forms. She performs frequently as a guest with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and serves as the co-artistic director of the Kenya International Chamber Music Festival. She is a 2022/23 McKnight Fellowship grant recipient\, a former MacPhail Center Artist-in-Residence in association with the Global Music Initiative\, and a guest lecturer at the Longy School for Music in Alternative Spaces. She is widely recognized for her initiatives including “Cello Conversations” at the Weisman Museum (part of a Target Center residency)\, “Your Dance” with Springboard for the Arts\, and the chamber music series Sound Dialogue with Fueled Collective.

He has been an influential creative force for decades as an improviser\, composer\, educator\, bandleader\, collaborator\, and recording artist. Here\, he has been proclaimed “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade” by Vanity Fair. Also\, he is hailed as “a living legend” by The New Yorker. A seventeen-time Grammy nominee\, Hersch has garnered jazz’s most prestigious awards. Here\, these include a Doris Duke Artist (2016)\, Jazz Pianist of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association (2011\, 2016\, 2018)\, and the Jazz Magazine (France) International Artist of the Year (2021). Furthermore\, the Fred Hersch Trio was voted the #1 Jazz Group in the 2019 Downbeat Critics Poll. \nHersch is an acclaimed and influential solo pianist. There\, he has twelve solo recordings in his catalog including the 2024 release\, Silent\, Listening. All About Jazz has remarked that “when it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz\, there are two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else”. Also\, New York Times simply calls him “a master who plays it his way”. \nThe Fred Hersch Trio has remained at the pinnacle of modern jazz\, venerated for embodying thrilling interplay and dynamic spontaneity. The Wall Street Journal calls the trio “one of the major ensembles of our time.” Also\, the New Yorker has applauded it for playing with “high lyricism and high danger.” The Trio has appeared at major jazz festivals throughout Europe and the U.S. Additionally\, they have regularly headlined the legendary Village Vanguard since 1977.

DESCRIPTION:Dale Alexander at the age of 24 had a rich and varied musical background than many musicians achieve in a lifetime. Studying with prominent musicians such as Marvin Dahlgren and Dr. Reginald Buckner of the University School of Music served to enhance Dale’s unlimited natural musical talent. He was recognized by the University of Wisconsin with a National Jazz Education Award for his outstanding individual performance as a percussionist. By the time he graduated from high school\, he had already performed with the nationally known soul group\, the Temptations.\nIn the ensuing years\, Dale has appeared with virtually every well-known jazz artist in the States. After conquering the drums\, he turned his sights toward the piano studying with Manfredo Fest.\nDale worked as one of the Musical Directors for the Christmas performance from “American Idol on Tour” and is available for national and international engagements. He is also available for both piano and drum lessons in his studio in Chatsworth\, California.\n​In the early 90s\, he was Musical Director for Andiamo’s\, a world class jazz club in Aspen and stayed there until he moved to the Los Angeles area. Having racked up views on their MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar suites and as guests on the YouTube series “Live at Emmet’s Place\,” this NYC-based trio is known for their internet savvy and musical chops. \nBand Members:\nAbdias Armenteros – Sax\nSebastian Rios – Bass\nTJ Reddick – Drums \n⊹ \nNew Jazz Underground\, an American trio\, have been described as “an innovative and ultra-creative collective striving to establish themselves as a defining voice for the genre of jazz and beyond.” Their music signals a merging of traditional sensibilities in jazz with the modern influence of swing\, hip-hop\, house\, and Afro-Cuban music. \nMillions have been introduced to the trio’s undeniably fresh sound through viral videos of the band performing in their living room. Videos such as “they can hate but we still swingin’\,” “f**k/s**t/c**t/jazz\,” and “sad boy jazz” feature the band’s exuberant chemistry\, effortless musicality\, and raw ambition in sound. \nAbdias Armenteros\, Sebastian Rios\, and TJ Reddick have been lauded as some of jazz’s most promising young artists in their own right. After meeting while students at The Juilliard School\, the trio began playing in the parks of New York City during lockdown in 2020. SUMMARY:Joyce Lyons with Phil Aaron\, Dan Carpel\, Jay Epstein
DESCRIPTION:Born to perform\, Joyce Lyons doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t on stage\, performing in a choir\, club act or theater piece.\nImmediately after graduating from high school\, Joyce headed west to attend Colorado Women’s College and immersed herself in the music and theater departments. She studied voice (pop\, musical theater and even classical)\, and piano\, and then fell hard for the theater. Cast as the Emcee in the musical “Cabaret” to glowing reviews by The Denver Post\, her path was clear.\nThe east coast beckoned again\, and Joyce spent a year in the Washington\, D.C. area\, and performing in local theater\, notably in a production of Godspell. She soon jumped to the Big Apple\, collecting roles in Tintypes\, Sophisticated Ladies\, Little Shop of Horrors and Company to name a few.\nCabaret clubs and the intimacy of the smaller venue proved to be just the right fit for Joyce. A slight detour into stand-up was fun and challenging (kept looking for the piano player) but it is the small stage that continues to call her back.\nA chance meeting with Associate Justice Clarence Thomas led to a special performance at the Supreme Court. Joyce has become a regular performer at the world famous spa\, Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires\, and most recently has added the luxurious Miraval Tucson Resort and Spa to her repeat request list.\nJoyce recorded her first jazz CD (Sooner or Later)\, at the renowned Nola Recording Studios\, an experience which sent her in an entirely new direction. Joyce has worked with many of the most distinguished artists in the business\, such as the late\, great\, Joe Beck\, Kenny Ascher\, Bucky Pizzarelli\, Jay Leonhart\, Lee Musiker\, Lou Marini and Al Gafa.\nIn addition to regularly performing at jazz clubs\, private parties\, Joyce has added appearances at Turning Stone Casino and Spa and has participated in the Jazz on the Hill Series at Fort Lewis College in Durango\, CO. Joyce added teaching to her repertoire with a master class on reading lyrics for vocal students. She has offered this class as part of the Artist in Residence Program at Fort Lewis College and New York City. Look for this class at colleges\, high schools and private venues nationally.\nChange continues to influence Joyce’s career. New reviews\, a soon-to-be released “live” recording\, and even relocation to the Midwest. Joyce now resides in the culturally reach environs of Minneapolis and is excited to explore exciting new opportunities among the many jazz and theater venues.

DESCRIPTION:The Upper Midwest Flute Association is holding their annual Flute Fest on Saturday April 11\, 2026 from 9:00AM – 6:00PM at Hill-Murray School\, 2526 Larpenteur Ave E\, Maplewood\, MN 55109. \nFlute Fest is an annual UMFA event dedicated to our love of the flute. Each year we feature an inspiring guest artist\, who typically gives a masterclass for selected flutists and performs a recital. \nThe day includes recitals\, workshops\, competitions\, and exhibits\, as well as opportunities for participation\, so bring your flute! For a quick overview of the day\, check out our brief Schedule of Events. The Flute Fest Program contains session descriptions\, recital programs\, and presenter biographies. \nIt is also a fabulous day to shop for flutes and flute music from our many knowledgeable exhibitors. SUMMARY:Takuya Juroda at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Kobe-born\, Brooklyn-based trumpeter Takuya Kuroda is dedicated\, and his eighth studio record\, 2025’s Everyday\, is proof of that. Kuroda has not missed a beat since the release of 2022’s Midnight Crisp –– a record PopMatters called a “future classic”. Now\, the 45-year-old musician desires to achieve the “perfect blend of production and organic performance”. It’s why he continues to throw himself into his daily practice\, nearly thirty years into his musical life. \nEveryday builds on and dives ever deeper into the hip hop and neo-soul elements of his previous work. Here\, it is a deliciously rhythmic enterprise and a triumph of genre-blending modern jazz. Moreover\, Kuroda’s playing is sure-footed and pure –– whether on the horn\, synth\, or Rhodes. He virtuosically dances among infectious rhythms of his own creation.  \nKuroda’s twenty-one years in the United States have been fruitful. After studying composition at The New School\, he threw himself into work. There\, he played with DJ Premier’s Badder Band and Akoya Afrobeat and recorded as a sideman and bandleader. But as Kuroda himself says\, “the only way to make the music that I want to make is to work hard\, every day.” And so we have Everyday\, a title which reflects\, as Kuroda puts it\, “that simple message.” \nEveryday is hyperaware of a panoply of old ideas and a pantheon of old gods. However\, as Kuroda engages these tropes and personalities day in and day out\, he turns it all around in a style that’s undeniably cool and personal. As Pitchfork put it\, “Kuroda’s skill is not drawing influence from so many different forms\, it’s radiating joy in doing so.” It’s this sterling dedication that makes Takuya Kuroda and Everyday anything but commonplace.
