Having racked up views on their MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar suites and as guests on the YouTube series “Live at Emmet’s Place\,” this NYC-based trio is known for their internet savvy and musical chops. \nBand Members:\nAbdias Armenteros – Sax\nSebastian Rios – Bass\nTJ Reddick – Drums \n⊹ \nNew Jazz Underground\, an American trio\, have been described as “an innovative and ultra-creative collective striving to establish themselves as a defining voice for the genre of jazz and beyond.” Their music signals a merging of traditional sensibilities in jazz with the modern influence of swing\, hip-hop\, house\, and Afro-Cuban music. \nMillions have been introduced to the trio’s undeniably fresh sound through viral videos of the band performing in their living room. Videos such as “they can hate but we still swingin’\,” “f**k/s**t/c**t/jazz\,” and “sad boy jazz” feature the band’s exuberant chemistry\, effortless musicality\, and raw ambition in sound. \nAbdias Armenteros\, Sebastian Rios\, and TJ Reddick have been lauded as some of jazz’s most promising young artists in their own right. After meeting while students at The Juilliard School\, the trio began playing in the parks of New York City during lockdown in 2020. They have since performed as New Jazz Underground at venues including Dizzy’s Club and Birdland\, and Reddick and Rios have played as sidemen for the likes of Jon Batiste\, Sullivan Fortner\, and Emmet Cohen.

DESCRIPTION:Born to perform\, Joyce Lyons doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t on stage\, performing in a choir\, club act or theater piece.\nImmediately after graduating from high school\, Joyce headed west to attend Colorado Women’s College and immersed herself in the music and theater departments. She studied voice (pop\, musical theater and even classical)\, and piano\, and then fell hard for the theater. Cast as the Emcee in the musical “Cabaret” to glowing reviews by The Denver Post\, her path was clear.\nThe east coast beckoned again\, and Joyce spent a year in the Washington\, D.C. area\, and performing in local theater\, notably in a production of Godspell. She soon jumped to the Big Apple\, collecting roles in Tintypes\, Sophisticated Ladies\, Little Shop of Horrors and Company to name a few.\nCabaret clubs and the intimacy of the smaller venue proved to be just the right fit for Joyce. A slight detour into stand-up was fun and challenging (kept looking for the piano player) but it is the small stage that continues to call her back.\nA chance meeting with Associate Justice Clarence Thomas led to a special performance at the Supreme Court. Joyce has become a regular performer at the world famous spa\, Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires\, and most recently has added the luxurious Miraval Tucson Resort and Spa to her repeat request list.\nJoyce recorded her first jazz CD (Sooner or Later)\, at the renowned Nola Recording Studios\, an experience which sent her in an entirely new direction. Joyce has worked with many of the most distinguished artists in the business\, such as the late\, great\, Joe Beck\, Kenny Ascher\, Bucky Pizzarelli\, Jay Leonhart\, Lee Musiker\, Lou Marini and Al Gafa.\nIn addition to regularly performing at jazz clubs\, private parties\, Joyce has added appearances at Turning Stone Casino and Spa and has participated in the Jazz on the Hill Series at Fort Lewis College in Durango\, CO. Joyce added teaching to her repertoire with a master class on reading lyrics for vocal students. She has offered this class as part of the Artist in Residence Program at Fort Lewis College and New York City. Look for this class at colleges\, high schools and private venues nationally.\nChange continues to influence Joyce’s career. New reviews\, a soon-to-be released “live” recording\, and even relocation to the Midwest. Joyce now resides in the culturally reach environs of Minneapolis and is excited to explore exciting new opportunities among the many jazz and theater venues.

DESCRIPTION:Dale Alexander at the age of 24 had a rich and varied musical background than many musicians achieve in a lifetime. Studying with prominent musicians such as Marvin Dahlgren and Dr. Reginald Buckner of the University School of Music served to enhance Dale’s unlimited natural musical talent. He was recognized by the University of Wisconsin with a National Jazz Education Award for his outstanding individual performance as a percussionist. By the time he graduated from high school\, he had already performed with the nationally known soul group\, the Temptations.\nIn the ensuing years\, Dale has appeared with virtually every well-known jazz artist in the States. After conquering the drums\, he turned his sights toward the piano studying with Manfredo Fest.\nDale worked as one of the Musical Directors for the Christmas performance from “American Idol on Tour” and is available for national and international engagements. She also has built a variety of feedback systems and works with Max/MSP. Her work celebrates the agency of these unpredictable machines. \nJo Kellen is a founding member of art-punk projects the Florists and Products Band. These projects have released more than 10 collective albums and EPs since 2015. As a primary songwriter\, lyricist\, and performer\, Jo’s work has been praised by outlets such as The Current\, Atwood Magazine\, Racket\, Brooklyn Vegan\, and Midwest Action for its sharp wit and inventive arrangements. DESCRIPTION:Them Coulee Boys spent the past decade-plus establishing themselves as one of the Midwest’s premier purveyors of bluegrass and Americana. The Cedar is thrilled to welcome the Eau Claire-based band to our stage for the first time. \n“A rollicking blend of bluegrass\, folk\, and rock and roll” – Folk Alley \nSoren Staff and Beau Janke—co-founders of folk/rock/Americana outfit Them Coulee Boys—met as camp counselors in northern Wisconsin in 2011. Their weekend workshopping of Avett Brothers and classic country tunes led to original songs and adding Soren’s brother Jens on mandolin\, Neil Krause on electric bass and Stas Hable on drums. \nThe band’s name is a nod to the glacial melt-carved river valleys they call home\, known by early French fur trappers as coulees. Known for wild swings of emotion during sets\, it is not unusual to see fans in tears and minutes later dancing with abandon. The honesty and ability to talk and sing about the feelings and emotions that shape them has endeared them to a growing group of fans and friends. \nKiernan is the Minneapolis-based musical project of Laura Kiernan\, who is very excited to be playing with a band. Her indie folk tunes can be described as “sounds for when you’re feeding the pigeons.” In other words: soft\, silly\, spacious and best done with friends. She is joined by Nate LeBrun (Humbird\, Squinny) on drums\, Maddie Thies (anni xo\, Sister Species) on bass\, and Jared Johnson on guitar. The band released its first full length album in 2025\, after being named one of the Best New Bands by First Avenue that year. They’re excited to release more this year – they hope it nourishes your ears like a nice hunk of bread.

SUMMARY:Pat Metheny at Dakota Jazz Club for Two Nights
DESCRIPTION:Pat Metheny was born in Lee’s Summit\, MO on August 12\, 1954 into a musical family. He started on trumpet at the age of eight\, then switched to guitar at age twelve. By fifteen\, he worked regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City\, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience. Then\, Metheny burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton\, the young player already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style. Here\, he blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility. Moreover\, this way of playing and improvising was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody\, swing\, and the blues. With his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation.  \nMetheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. He has performed with Steve Reich\, Ornette Coleman\, Herbie Hancock\, Jim Hall\, Milton Nascimento\, and David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar\, small ensembles\, electric and acoustic instruments\, large orchestras\, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project\, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre.  \nPat Metheny has won twenty Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories. Once\, he won seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame\, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included. In 2018 he was named an NEA Jazz Master\, the nation’s highest honor in jazz.

DESCRIPTION:Civil Disobedience is a project initiated by New York bassist David Ambrosio\, showcasing the works of progressive jazz composers from the late 1960s Blue Note era. Featured composers include Bobby Hutcherson\, Jackie McLean\, Stanley Cowell\, Harold Land\, Joe Chambers\, Duke Pearson\, and James Spaulding. \nCivil Disobedience was conceptualized and convened as an artistic response to current socioeconomic and social justice events\, both on a domestic and global scale. By performing the politically conscious jazz compositions of the late 1960s Blue Note Era\, Civil Disobedience seeks to bring forth the timeless messages embedded in this music and connect them with the pressing issues of today. \nBand Members:\nDavid Ambrosio – Bass\nBruce Barth – Piano\nDonny McCaslin – Saxophone\nJason Palmer – Trumpet\nRudy Royston – Drums \n⊹ \nDavid Ambrosio has been one of New York City’s finest freelance musicians and educators for the past 30 years. His current working projects as a leader are Civil Disobedience: Blue Note Records in the Progressive ‘60s—featuring Grammy-nominated saxophonist Donny McCaslin and drumming legend Victor Lewis—and the David Ambrosio Trio\, featuring saxophonist Loren Stillman. In addition to his own ensembles\, he is the co-leader of the David Ambrosio/Russ Meissner Sextet\, 40Twenty\, and Grupo Los Santos. He also performs in many other groups\, including George Schuller’s Circle Wide\, Matt Renzi Trio\, Eri Yamamoto Trio\, and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra. He has performed with such jazz greats as Kenny Werner\, Joe Lovano\, Terry Gibbs\, Buddy DeFranco\, George Garzone\, Joseph Jarmon\, and Ralph Alessi. Currently\, he is on the faculty at Hunter College and the New York Jazz Workshop in NYC. \nJazz pianist and composer Bruce Barth has been sharing his music with listeners the world over for more than 35 years. Originally from Pasadena\, CA\, Barth arrived on the New York jazz scene in 1988\, and soon started working in the bands of Stanley Turrentine and Terence Blanchard. Barth’s first two albums as a leader\, In Focus and Morning Call\, were chosen for the New York Times’ top 10 lists. Barth has been a member of the Terell Stafford Quartet for more than 15 years\, recording and performing extensively with this dynamic group. He has also had extended collaborations with Steve Wilson\, Luciana Souza\, Steve Nelson\, and Tony Bennett. \nDonny McCaslin is an American jazz saxophonist best known as the bandleader and primary saxophonist on David Bowie’s final album\, Blackstar. McCaslin began playing the sax at 12 in Santa Cruz\, CA. His acumen led to a full scholarship at the Berklee College of Music\, a four-year stint with Gary Burton’s quintet\, and a subsequent three-year stretch with Steps Ahead. Additional shift work with Maria Schneider\, Danilo Pérez\, the Gil Evans Orchestra\, and Elvis Costello also dot his resume. McCaslin’s hybrid of jazz and art rock is clearly evident in his two most recent albums. \nTrumpeter\, composer\, and educator Jason Palmer has performed with Roy Haynes\, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Ravi Coltrane\, Jeff Ballard\, Lee Konitz\, Phil Woods\, Common\, Roy Hargrove\, and Lewis Nash. In addition to performing on over 40 albums as a sideman\, Palmer has recorded 17 albums under his own name on labels including Ayva\, Steeplechase\, Newvelle\, and Giant Step Arts. Four of his recordings were reviewed by DownBeat magazine and received at least 4 stars. Palmer has toured in over 40 countries with saxophonists Mark Turner\, Greg Osby\, Grace Kelly\, Allison Miller\, and Matana Roberts. \nFirst-call drummer Rudy Royston (Bill Frisell\, JD Allen\, Dave Douglas) has honed a thoroughly engaging voice as a composer and bandleader. His releases include his compelling debut 303 (2014)\, the raw and bracing trio follow-up Rise of Orion (2016) and the chamber quintet release Flatbed Buggy (2018).

SUMMARY:Finding Elijah\, a play on ending Hate
DESCRIPTION:.\nStorydance Theatre presents a story play dealing with the effects of hate and finding justice. A workshop on dealing with trauma after facing hate will also be offered as part of the Finding Elijah project. \nIn Jewish folklore the biblical prophet Elijah wanders the earth to provide justice\, compassion\, and healing in times of distress. The play explores Elijah throughout Jewish history in moments of antisemitism\, injustice\, and the often-broken discourse around Israel-Palestine. Rather than take a political stance\, the offering looks at the human cost of hate. While there is a decided Jewish focus in the production\, it aims to prompt audiences to reflect on their own experience. Stories in the play include traditional\, contemporary\, and personal accounts of dealing with hate and finding hope \nPerformers for this production include: Cia Sautter – Flamenco dancer\, Storyteller\, Workshop leader\, has a Ph.D in Religion and the Arts and training in movement and healing; Howard Lieberman and Ari Hoptman- acclaimed storyteller/actors; Talia Levine – a singer and musician who leads Koleinu\, specializing in world Jewish music.
