SUMMARY:Amanda Pascali at the Cedar Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:As the rising voice of America’s most ethnically diverse generation of young people\, singer-songwriter Amanda Pascali writes music that speaks to the experience of growing up as a first-generation American. Blending folk/American influences with Mediterranean\, Balkan\, and Latin rhythms\, Pascali’s songs are powerful tales of America told through the eyes of immigrants and those who have always felt like the “other.” \nAmanda Pascali embodies the complexity of modern identity. Born to a mother from Cairo who grew up in France and an Italian father raised in Romania\, she’s a mixed-race\, bilingual Gen Z troubadour perpetually caught between worlds. Quoting poet Ijeoma Umebinyuo\, she says\, “I’m often ‘too foreign for here\, too foreign for home\, and never enough for both.’” Rather than lamenting this displacement\, Pascali has transformed it into her artistic superpower.

SUMMARY:Robb Henry\, Matt Senjem\, Jay Epstein
DESCRIPTION:After a year and a half break in live performances from March 2020 through July 2021 due to the pandemic\, Parisota Hot Club and the Robb Henry Trio are back to work once again. See the dates page for upcoming 2022 performances. \nAlthough best known for his recent work with Parisota Hot Club\, a band he formed in 2001 to explore the music and jazz guitar stylings of French guitarist Django Reinhardt\, Robb’s musical background includes a diverse range of experience. \nRobb’s guitar playing odyssey began in the autumn of 1966 at the age of thirteen when he joined up with the Surfers\, an established teenage rock band from the Hopkins/Minnetonka area. The popular group played many teen dances in the western suburbs of Minneapolis\, recorded a self-produced 45\, and appeared on local KMSP 9 television show “Organ Notes” in late 1966 before dissolving in early 1968. \nLater in the summer of that year\, he fell in with a group of young blues fanatics through a new acquaintance\, singer and blues harp player Reg Clow. This group eventually hooked up with blues singer and harp player Mojo Buford in the winter of 1968-69 and played with him through the summer of 1970. This experience with Mojo\, a Chicago style blues artist and close associate of the legendary Muddy Waters\, proved to be a major influence in Robb’s solo guitar work. Mojo served as a mentor to many young blues players during his time in the Twin Cities. \nIn early 1971 Robb was brought into the Top Forty danceband Brave New World by his old Surfers bandmate Bob Fisher. Worked lounges\, nightclubs\, and bars throughout the 1970’s with groups including Brave New World\, Walter Mitty\, The Philadelphia Story soul review at the Flame Bar\, Inside Straight and Sweet Thing. Gigged at the Longhorn bar with Fingerprints and recorded on Twin/Tone Records. Relocated to Chicago ’79-’84\, worked with songwriter Jessie Roe\, country singer Kent Rose\, legendary new wave singer Jim Desmond\, R&B funk group Frankie Hill and Metropol\, and back to the blues with Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report from Gary\, Indiana. \nRelocated back to Minneapolis at the end of 1984\, recorded and played gigs with Tom Bright. Briefly fronted a blues-rock trio called World Wide Hoodoo. Played jazz and pop in the ’90’s with corporate and wedding bands\, did blues gigs and recorded with Cooker John band\, explored new styles and material in solo guitar coffeehouse gigs from 1994 through 2002\, also began teaching private guitar lessons on a regular basis in early 1995 ….met French expatriate and violinist Raphaël Fraisse in 2001 and voila! Parisota Hot Club \nNotable groups: The Surfers ’66-’67… Mojo Buford ’69-’70… Brave New World ’71-’72… Walter Mitty ’73…Philadelphia Story ’75… Inside Straight and Sweet Thing 1976-1977\, Fingerprints ’77-’78… Kent Rose 1980…Desmond ’81… Metropol ’83-’84…Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report ’84…Tom Bright 1986-’91… World Wide Hoodoo 1986-’88… Parisota Hot Club 2001 to present… Robb Henry Trio early 2010 to present \nSome memorable performances: “Organ Notes” November 1966 KMSP 9 TV appearance with the Surfers… B.B. King show at the Depot in Minneapolis 1970 with Mojo Buford…opening for U2 at Park West in Chicago 1981 with Desmond….playing Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis with Parisota Hot Club 2005 \nSince early 2010\, he has also been performing a distinctive blend of instrumental music with his self-titled guitar\, bass and drums trio. \nLive sets by this combo are a melting pot of styles steeped in blues\, jazz and ’60’s pop music. Retro noire style movie themes\, à la Henry Mancini and others\, selections by Django Reinhardt\, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles are standard set features.Familiar melodies\, unexpected excursions\, and sonic surprises reminiscent of vintage psychedelic Brit-Rock\, make for a fluid\, musical landscape.

SUMMARY:The New Standards at Crooners Supper Club
DESCRIPTION:Jazz\, Tradition\, Cabaret\nMinnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock\, from the freedom of jazz\, to the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nChan Poling: Piano\, Vocals \nJohn Munson: Bass\, Vocals \nSteve Roehm: Vibraphone \nThe New Standards is a “revelatory” (StarTribune) Twin-Cities-based trio with a global following. Formed in 2005 as an off-shoot project between three Minneapolis-based musicians and friends\, The New Standards has grown into a globe-spanning adventure — filling theaters and clubs and spawning several CDs\, videos\, cartoons\, and dance and theater projects that have charmed and delighted an ever-multiplying legion of faithful fans.

SUMMARY:Laurels String Quartet (feat. Aby Wolf & Eric Mayson) at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:A vital force in the Minneapolis music scene with reach far beyond it\, the Laurels String Quartet has supported stars including Father John Misty\, Semisonic\, and Ondara but have never stepped out as headliners themselves. This March\, that changes! The Laurels will host a five-week residency at Berlin\, joined by a rotating cast of exceptional artists from their creative orbit. \nThis evening\, Laurels String Quartet and Aby Wolf will further develop their electric collaboration of voice and strings. The quartet will also be joined by multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter\, and producer Eric Mayson in a genre-bending performance that blurs the lines between indie and chamber music. \nDoors for the first set will open at 5:30 p.m.\, while doors for the second set will open at 7:45 p.m. \nLaurels String Quartet:\nJosh Misner – Violin\nLaura Harada – Violin\nErica Burton – Viola\nJacqueline Ultan – Cello \n⊹ \nAfter a chance meeting over a decade ago\, the Laurels String Quartet quickly became a staple of the Minneapolis music scene. Their collective instinct for tuning into the emotional frequency of a song has amassed the group collaborators near and far. Artists such as Belle & Sebastian\, Father John Misty\, Lucius\, jeremy messersmith\, Macklemore\, Dan Wilson\, Jason Mraz\, Rogue Valley\, Motion City Soundtrack\, the New Standards\, and Ondara have sought their company on stage and in the studio. The quartet has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman\, PBS\, The Current\, and NPR and has performed on stages across the country\, from the celebrated outdoor festival Rock The Garden at the Walker Art Center to the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn\, NY. \nAby Wolf grew up in the Driftless Region of northwestern Illinois\, honing her ear for harmonies by singing while her mother practiced Erik Satie piano songs. At the age of 19\, Wolf moved to Minneapolis and began collaborating with musicians across a spectrum of hip-hop\, neo-soul\, weirdo electronic improv\, rock\, jazz\, and classical crossover. Whether she is writing vocal arrangements; fulfilling commissions; or performing in clubs\, theaters\, and schools everywhere from Brainerd to Bratislava to Beijing\, she brings an elastic skillset and a palpable element of joy to whatever endeavor she pursues. A lifelong learner with an ever-expanding curiosity\, Wolf has a sound distinguished not by typical markers of genre or instrumentation\, but by her impressive range of expression and experimentation. \nComposer\, collaborator\, and multi-instrumentalist Eric Mayson has an insatiable curiosity that pulls him in many directions. He works with theaters\, dance companies\, bands\, and orchestras\, and he loves playing Dungeons & Dragons and reading history. In 2019\, he began training in aviation\, and he is currently working as a flight instructor at Mankato Regional Airport.
