DESCRIPTION:Yagody is a Ukrainian group dedicated to performing both traditional and contemporary folk music from the East. \n“A concert with Yagódy is a ritual … there is the breathing of the wind in the field\, a sound like the voice of our ancestors. The listeners are enveloped in living energy and musical trance. A dance of voices in the pulse of humanity.” — Internationales Donaufest \nThe music of the band “YAGODY” is a sign of initiation. It is the wind in the wilderness. It is the songs of wild tribes. This is the voice of your ancestors. This is live energy. It is a dance with voices. This is how our nature smells. This is how our blood sounds. \nOur project “YAGODY” appeared in June 2016. As is typical for everything real\, the band appeareth spontaneously. As if it was meant to be. For the group’s sake\, we took up a lot of musical instruments and looked through a lot of lyrics to find our song\, our ritual.  And now it has finally come! \nOur music is filled with Ukrainian sound and Balkan motifs. It is important to us that the lyrics that flow in you\, are also sound on your lips. Our music is the letters from the past that you did not receive. \nAnd also our music is about us. Four women with different temperaments and experiences. Zoriana Dybovska (percussion)\, Sofiia Leshyshak (djembe)\, Nadiia Parashchuk (accordion)\, and Tetiana Voitiv (drymba and Tibetan bowl). We are completely different from each other\, and that is why the name of our band begins with the sound “YA”. In Ukrainian it means “Me”. We are similar in our differences. \nIn short\, “YAGODY” is a way inside yourself. Into your heart. In our music\, everything is united into a single whole. Returning to the home of your ancestors becomes possible. SUMMARY:Ladysmith Black Mambazo at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people\, singing a message of peace\, love and harmony. With their 2024 release\, Soothe My Soul… Songs From Our South African Church\, the group puts their spin on gospel music. \nThe year 2025 marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of Joseph Shabalala forming Ladysmith Black Mambazo. His group conquered all of South Africa and would become a worldwide phenomenon. Further\, they won more Grammy Awards (five) and have received more nominations (nineteen) than any World music group. \nDuring the dark years of South African Apartheid\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo followed a path of peaceful protest. Here\, they did this through songs of hope and love. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990\, he said he listened to their music while in jail. Additionally\, he was inspired by their powerful message of peace. Thus\, when Mandela won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize\, he asked the group to join him at the ceremony. It was Mandela who called Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.” \nIn the mid-1980s\, American singer/songwriter Paul Simon famously visited South Africa. There\, he incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into his renowned Graceland album. This became a landmark recording\, considered seminal in introducing World music to mainstream audiences. Furthermore\, this brought the group to the attention of music lovers all over the world. \nAfter leading his group for over fifty years and approaching his seventy-fifth birthday\, Joseph Shabalala retired in 2014\, handing the leadership to his three sons\, Thulani\, Sibongiseni and Thamsanqa Shabalala.  \nLadysmith Black Mambazo is Thulani Shabalala\, Sibongiseni Shabalala\, Thamsanqa Shabalala\, Msizi Shabalala\, Albert Mazibuko\, Abednego Mazibuko\, Mfanafuthi Dlamini\, Pius Shezi and Sabelo Mthembu.

SUMMARY:Mary Halvorson: Canis Major with Nelson Devereaux at the Cedar Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Incomparable guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson brings Canis Major to the Cedar stage for the first time. Dave Adewumi (trumpet)\, Henry Fraser (bass)\, Tomas Fujiwara (drums) round out the quartet. \nThere’s a theory of record production that says the best results come shortly after musicians have encountered a piece for the first time. That’s when it’s possible to get the intuitive reaction\, before players develop a frame of reference. First thought\, best thought. \nAn opposite theory holds that the magic happens later\, after the ensemble has absorbed the material. That’s when the musicians can lean into its nuances\, leveraging familiarity into swagger. \nMary Halvorson’s dramatic\, daringly intricate new album About Ghosts suggests that these approaches can be complementary. The eight-song work is the guitarist and composer’s fourth full-length with her sextet Amaryllis—plus saxophonists Immanuel Wilkins and Brian Settles. Halvorson wrote some of the music for the core group in 2023\, and then\, following what she describes as a snap impulse\, experimented with a piece for four horns instead of two. Just to try it.

Andrew routinely jams venues all over the Midwest and beyond with a uniquely cross-generational audience. Walesch’s fans include jazz enthusiasts of a certain age\, as well as a younger crowd compelled by his down-home insouciance. Also\, all are drawn in by the knowing irreverence of a tried-and-true American nightclub entertainer. \n“Although they are my idols\, I don’t attempt to imitate the great pop and jazz artists of the 50s and ’60s\,” says Andrew\, “but I go for broke when we do our shows – vocally and musically – which is what they all did best and why they were in a class of their own.” He possesses fine vocal and piano chops\, along with a keen sensibility to find and interpret a great lyric. These have led to some great opportunities for Walesch. He has appeared on the nationally syndicated NPR broadcast Mountain Stage. Additionally\, he performed at the 33rd Annual Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. \nWalesch resides in Phoenix\, AZ\, where he is the Artistic Director for the world-famous Musical Instrument Museum.

There may be some Coltrane! \nBand Members:\nSteve Kenny – Trumpet\nPete Whitman – Saxophones\nLevi Schwartzberg – Vibraphone\nDan Carpel – Bass\nMiguel Hurtado – Drums \nSteve Kenny is active in the Minnesota jazz community as a performer\, composer\, and curator. Kenny is a founding member of the illicit sextet\, Group 47\, What Would Monk Do?\, and his own quartets. Kenny was the curator of a weekly Saturday jazz series at KJ’s Hideaway\, and before that the Black Dog Cafe\, producing over 400 Saturday Night Jazz shows.  His latest recording\, “Quartets”\, includes original compositions played by four separate ensembles of Twin Cities jazz musicians\, including a live version of Steve Kenny’s Ghost Suite. In 2019\, the national Jazz Journalists Association named Kenny a “Minnesota Jazz Hero” for his work in the jazz community and lifelong devotion to the idiom. \nDan Carpel attended Berklee College of Music\, where he was in the school’s Monterey Quartet. He was a member of Jason Palmer’s band throughout his time in town\, and was a mainstay in their residency at Wally’s Jazz Cafe. His time out east also notably included playing in groups led by Godwin Louis\, Noah Preminger\, and Melissa Aldana. Since relocating to the Twin Cities\, Carpel has regularly worked with Javi Santiago\, Zacc Harris\, and Abinnet Berhanu. He frequently performed with singer/guitarist Mary Cutrufello as well as Sonny Knight and the Lakers\, and he recently became a part of Dylan Hicks’s Small Screens. \nMiguel Hurtado played throughout the Twin Cities as a teenager in several youth bands\, as well as with South High jazz ensembles. After graduating from the Manhattan School of Music in spring 2010\, he returned to the Twin Cities where he quickly became a busy member of the local jazz scene. He has led his own ensembles at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival and performed at the Artists Quarter and Dakota; more recently he has been heard at Jazz Central\, the Icehouse\, Black Dog\, and more. In addition to leading his own bands\, he has performed with Jake Baldwin\, John Raymond\, Jeremy Walker\, Javi Santiago\, Joe Strachan\, Ted Olsen\, Will Kjeer\, Steve Kenny\, and Courageous Endeavors. He is also expanding his musical resume\, playing with some local pop and R&B singers\, particularly Alicia Steele and vocalist/rapper Toussaint Morrison. \nLevi Schwartzberg grew up playing vibraphone and piano in the Twin Cities\, specializing in improvisationally emphasized music. He has played with a number of groups—such as Le Percheron\, No Territory Band\, and the Steve Kenny Quartet—in addition to leading his own quartet. He uses a variety of melodic and textural approaches to create an open\, free-leaning sound that can fit in a wide array of musical contexts. \nPete Whitman is a saxophonist\, flutist\, clarinetist\, composer\, arranger\, and educator based in the Twin Cities. He has performed with such distinguished groups as the Minnesota Orchestra\, Jack McDuff\, Curtis Fuller\, the Woody Herman Orchestra\, the Jazz MN Big Band\, the Glenn Miller Orchestra\, Andres Prado\, Dave Stryker\, the Temptations\, and the Midtown Men. Whitman has three CDs under his name: Departure Point (Igmod Records)\, The Sound of Water (Artegra)\, and Where’s When (Artegra). He also taught saxophone\, improvisation\, and arranging for 18 years at McNally Smith College of Music and directed the McNally Smith Jazz Orchestra.

Their debut solo album\, We Fell In Turn—featuring their works for trombone\, voice and electronics—was released on AKP Records in 2023.  Their newest album\, Another View\, features Mary Halvorson\, Kanoa Mendenhall\, and Kayvon Gordon and was praised by Downbeat for “its entrancing\, cyclical rhythms and longing melodicism.” \nVandever has toured and performed internationally with their quartet\, performing at festivals such as the Winter Jazz Festival and BRIC Jazz Festival. They are also for their work as a sideperson\, performing with jazz artists including Joel Ross\, Immanuel Wilkins\, and Fay Victor. Vandever has also performed with popular artists including Harry Styles\, Lizzo\, Japanese Breakfast\, Moses Sumney\, Jennifer Hudson\, and Demi Lovato. They are a founding member of tilt\, a Brooklyn-based collective bringing together the voices of Isabel Crespo Pardo\, Carmen Quill\, and Vandever. \nVandever received their Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies from the Juilliard School in 2017. They are an awardee of the 2022 Next Jazz Legacy\, a program founded by New Music USA and the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. They were also selected to curate the 2022 Music Series for The Arts Center at Duck Creek in East Hampton. Along with their performance work\, Vandever has been commissioned to write works for groups and individuals including Tesla Quartet\, the Westerlies\, Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim\, and Hats+Heels. \nVandever is on faculty at the New England Conservatory and has led masterclasses at universities including California Institute of the Arts\, University of Chicago Illinois\, Cal State Northridge\, Saddleback College\, University of Maine Farmington\, and University of Missouri. \nVandever endorses Conn Selmer and Bach instruments as well as Denis Wick London. \n⊹ \nHailing from the prairies of Iowa\, Ross Clowser is an American composer\, improviser\, scholar\, guitarist\, and DJ. After conquering the drums\, he turned his sights toward the piano studying with Manfredo Fest.\nDale worked as one of the Musical Directors for the Christmas performance from “American Idol on Tour” and is available for national and international engagements. He is also available for both piano and drum lessons in his studio in Chatsworth\, California.\n​In the early 90s\, he was Musical Director for Andiamo’s\, a world class jazz club in Aspen and stayed there until he moved to the Los Angeles area. They found warmth and purpose in the music shared by the dwellers of LaPlant Road. There\, it was named after early settlers who established themselves in the area a century prior. Together\, Liz and Emily work to create new sounds\, incorporating influence from their favorite genres. Glover combines live jazz music and percussive movement for an expressive celebration of sound. Here\, Glover acts as lead dancer and drummer! At this performance\, he’ll push the boundaries of dance\, taking you on an entertaining journey inspired by mythological and ancestral codes of sound. \nSavion Glover began as a prodigious student of the great Honi Coles and the late Gregory Hines. It was Hines who called him “possibly the best tap dancer that ever lived.” Glover has been boldly breaking new ground for over a quarter century. \nGlover was only eleven when he made his Broadway debut. There\, he played the title character in 1984’s The Tap Dance Kid. Then\, he received his first Tony nomination at fifteen for 1989’s Black and Blue. Also that year\, he appeared alongside Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. in Tap. \nBy the turn of the 1990s Glover was moving freely between stage and screen. He appeared in Hines’ PBS special Gregory Hines’ Tap Dance in America. Also\, he was featured in over forty episodes of the iconic children’s series Sesame Street. Furthermore\, he received a 1992 Drama Desk nomination for Jelly’s Last Jam on Broadway. \nGlover built on the momentum from this award-winning celebration of Jelly Roll Morton. Then\, he became a cultural phenomenon at twenty-three when he co-conceived and starred in the wildly successful 1996 musical Bring in ‘Da Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk. This was a landmark production tracing the history of Black life in America through tap. The show earned Glover a Tony Award for Best Choreography. Bring in ‘Da Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk ran for three years at Broadway’s historic Ambassador Theatre\, totaling 1\,130 performances.

DESCRIPTION:The Million Quartet plays original music composed by Steve Million\, a jazz pianist who has recorded with Randy Brecker and Chris Potter. The quartet features the dynamic artistry of Mark Feldman on jazz violin along with the deep psychically connected grooves of Bob Rummage and Eric Hochberg. \nBand Members:\nSteve Million – Piano/Compositions\nMark Feldman – Violin\nEric Hochberg – Bass\nBob Rummage – Drums \n⊹ \nThe Million Quartet was born out of playing together. Eric Hochberg and Steve Million had a steady five-night-a-week gig at Catch 35 in downtown Chicago for 19 years; the gig featured mostly local jazz guest artists nightly. Mark Feldman joined the rotation and soon became a once-a-month (or more frequently) addition to the band. Million and Hochberg introduced their original compositions into the fray\, and two bands were born: Eric Hochberg’s String Thing and the Million Quartet. The addition of the great drummer Bob Rummage was a no-brainer\, as both Million and Hochberg had played with Rummage in the Mark Colby Quartet and other projects around Chicago. \nMillion decided to record the Million Quartet’s album Perfectly Spaced—released on Calligram Records—about a year later after the band’s first meeting. The Million Quartet is currently working on its second release. \n⊹ \nSteve Million has lived and worked in Chicago since 1988\, having previously resided in Kansas City\, Mo.\, and New York City. In Kansas City\, Million led several bands\, including Four Friends (with Steve Cardenas) and the eight-piece horn band the Mighty Lizards. Million moved to NYC in 1981 and lived there for two years\, making inroads into the jazz music scene of New York before moving back to Kansas City. In 1988\, he was a semi-finalist in the internationally renowned Thelonious Monk Piano Competition. He has made 11 or 12 albums as a leader—he has lost track—on labels including Origin Records\, Palmetto Records\, and Calligram Records. \nMark Feldman has performed with John Zorn\, John Abercrombie\, the Masada String Trio\, Dave Douglas\, Uri Caine\, and Billy Hart. He was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and played in many bar bands in Chicago. He played on over 200 recordings in Nashville as a studio musician\, was a member of the Nashville Symphony\, and was a member of the touring groups of country/Western entertainers Loretta Lynn and Ray Price. In 2003\, he was soloist with Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Guus Janssen’s Violin Concerto and with the WDR Jazz Orchestra in Concerto for Violin and Jazz Orchestra by Bill Dobbins. He has recorded with Michael Brecker\, Lee Konitz\, Joe Lovano\, and Chris Potter and has played on over 100 recordings in New York City as a soloist in contemporary music and modern jazz. Feldman has released several albums\, including Music for Violin Alone (Tzadik\, 1995); Book of Tells (Enja\, 2000); What Exit (ECM\, 2006 with British pianist John Taylor; and To Fly to Steal (Intakt\, 2010) with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerry Hemingway. \nAn in-demand performer on the Chicago and international music scenes for over 40 years\, Eric Hochberg has lent his bass work\, arranging\, composing and producing skills to a variety of projects across the realms of jazz\, folk\, rock\, and blues. He has performed or recorded with musical greats including Pharoah Sanders\, Bobby McFerrin\, Barbra Streisand\, Cassandra Wilson\, Kurt Elling\, Mark Murphy\, Sheila Jordan\, Von Freeman\, Terry Callier\, Ken Nordine ”Word Jazz\,” Joshua Redman\, Howard Levy\, Patricia Barber\, Bob Mintzer\, Dave Liebman\, and Sam Rivers. \nBob Rummage is one of the busiest musicians in Chicago. He maintains a versatile schedule of performances with ensembles ranging from the Metropolitan Jazz Octet to the eclectic styles of Alfonso Ponticelli. He has performed with many internationally known musicians—including Dizzy Gillespie\, Nat Adderley\, Benny Golson\, Buddy DeFranco\, Bela Fleck\, and Mississippi blues man Mose Allison—and has performed on albums with Frank Mantooth\, Steve Weist\, Rob Parton\, Colby/Caruso\, Bob Lark\, and Steve Million. Rummage is a sought-after clinician\, having made appearances at various high schools and colleges\, including the University of Illinois\, University of Kentucky\, Emporia State\, University of  Wisconsin-Whitewater\, and the Music For All camp at Illinois State.
