SUMMARY:Midwest Mavens: The Foxgloves at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“infectious energy and joy radiating off the stage” – Adventures in Americana\nThe Foxgloves are an all-women Americana/Newgrass band out of the Twin Cities. Here\, they have been a vibrant part of the Midwest music scene since 2019. Their vibrant four-part harmonies share stories that feel weathered and deeply human\, whether they are bright and driving\, or shadowed and searching. Live\, the energy shifts from song to song and never lets up\, from lean-in moments to joyous\, foot-stomping tunes. Moreover\, their high-energy performances and musical depth have swept them onto big stages throughout the region. For example\, Blue Ox Music Festival\, Boats and Bluegrass\, First Avenue Mainroom\, and Big Top Chautauqua. Furthermore\, this powerful band is making moves you’ll want to witness. \n \nLaPlant Road is the duo of two childhood friends\, Emily LaPlant and Liz Ashworth\, who grew up in the tundra of Northern Minnesota. They found warmth and purpose in the music shared by the dwellers of LaPlant Road. There\, it was named after early settlers who established themselves in the area a century prior. Together\, Liz and Emily work to create new sounds\, incorporating influence from their favorite genres. Then\, they craft an audio ode to many of the best things in their childhood: music\, family\, and friends. Moreover\, both ladies are multi-instrumentalists with a dynamic\, harmonious vocal blend. \n \nLanue comes to us from Duluth as a project that stands firmly in front of a fresh creative backdrop. There\, Sarah Krueger culled the name from the title of a poem on a thrift store shelf. Krueger continues to amplify her knack for straightforward and earnest songwriting. Also\, she maintains a vocal delivery that sits like honey over layers of warm synths\, guitars\, and percussion. Here\, Lanue builds a catalogue that puts the song at the center of the creative process.

SUMMARY:Savion Glover Presents: Project 9 at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“Savion is to tap what Charlie Parker is to jazz” – Herb Alpert\nSavion Glover brings his revolutionary Project 9 back to the venue he premiered it at\, in October 2024! Glover combines live jazz music and percussive movement for an expressive celebration of sound. Here\, Glover acts as lead dancer and drummer! At this performance\, he’ll push the boundaries of dance\, taking you on an entertaining journey inspired by mythological and ancestral codes of sound. \nSavion Glover began as a prodigious student of the great Honi Coles and the late Gregory Hines. It was Hines who called him “possibly the best tap dancer that ever lived.” Glover has been boldly breaking new ground for over a quarter century. \nGlover was only eleven when he made his Broadway debut. There\, he played the title character in 1984’s The Tap Dance Kid. Then\, he received his first Tony nomination at fifteen for 1989’s Black and Blue. Also that year\, he appeared alongside Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. in Tap. \nBy the turn of the 1990s Glover was moving freely between stage and screen. He appeared in Hines’ PBS special Gregory Hines’ Tap Dance in America. Also\, he was featured in over forty episodes of the iconic children’s series Sesame Street. Furthermore\, he received a 1992 Drama Desk nomination for Jelly’s Last Jam on Broadway. \nGlover built on the momentum from this award-winning celebration of Jelly Roll Morton. Then\, he became a cultural phenomenon at twenty-three when he co-conceived and starred in the wildly successful 1996 musical Bring in ‘Da Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk. This was a landmark production tracing the history of Black life in America through tap. The show earned Glover a Tony Award for Best Choreography. Bring in ‘Da Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk ran for three years at Broadway’s historic Ambassador Theatre\, totaling 1\,130 performances.

SUMMARY:Million Quartet featuring Mark Feldman at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:The Million Quartet plays original music composed by Steve Million\, a jazz pianist who has recorded with Randy Brecker and Chris Potter. The quartet features the dynamic artistry of Mark Feldman on jazz violin along with the deep psychically connected grooves of Bob Rummage and Eric Hochberg. \nBand Members:\nSteve Million – Piano/Compositions\nMark Feldman – Violin\nEric Hochberg – Bass\nBob Rummage – Drums \n⊹ \nThe Million Quartet was born out of playing together. Eric Hochberg and Steve Million had a steady five-night-a-week gig at Catch 35 in downtown Chicago for 19 years; the gig featured mostly local jazz guest artists nightly. Mark Feldman joined the rotation and soon became a once-a-month (or more frequently) addition to the band. Million and Hochberg introduced their original compositions into the fray\, and two bands were born: Eric Hochberg’s String Thing and the Million Quartet. The addition of the great drummer Bob Rummage was a no-brainer\, as both Million and Hochberg had played with Rummage in the Mark Colby Quartet and other projects around Chicago. \nMillion decided to record the Million Quartet’s album Perfectly Spaced—released on Calligram Records—about a year later after the band’s first meeting. The Million Quartet is currently working on its second release. \n⊹ \nSteve Million has lived and worked in Chicago since 1988\, having previously resided in Kansas City\, Mo.\, and New York City. In Kansas City\, Million led several bands\, including Four Friends (with Steve Cardenas) and the eight-piece horn band the Mighty Lizards. Million moved to NYC in 1981 and lived there for two years\, making inroads into the jazz music scene of New York before moving back to Kansas City. In 1988\, he was a semi-finalist in the internationally renowned Thelonious Monk Piano Competition. He has made 11 or 12 albums as a leader—he has lost track—on labels including Origin Records\, Palmetto Records\, and Calligram Records. \nMark Feldman has performed with John Zorn\, John Abercrombie\, the Masada String Trio\, Dave Douglas\, Uri Caine\, and Billy Hart. He was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and played in many bar bands in Chicago. He played on over 200 recordings in Nashville as a studio musician\, was a member of the Nashville Symphony\, and was a member of the touring groups of country/Western entertainers Loretta Lynn and Ray Price. In 2003\, he was soloist with Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Guus Janssen’s Violin Concerto and with the WDR Jazz Orchestra in Concerto for Violin and Jazz Orchestra by Bill Dobbins. He has recorded with Michael Brecker\, Lee Konitz\, Joe Lovano\, and Chris Potter and has played on over 100 recordings in New York City as a soloist in contemporary music and modern jazz. Feldman has released several albums\, including Music for Violin Alone (Tzadik\, 1995); Book of Tells (Enja\, 2000); What Exit (ECM\, 2006 with British pianist John Taylor; and To Fly to Steal (Intakt\, 2010) with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerry Hemingway. \nAn in-demand performer on the Chicago and international music scenes for over 40 years\, Eric Hochberg has lent his bass work\, arranging\, composing and producing skills to a variety of projects across the realms of jazz\, folk\, rock\, and blues. He has performed or recorded with musical greats including Pharoah Sanders\, Bobby McFerrin\, Barbra Streisand\, Cassandra Wilson\, Kurt Elling\, Mark Murphy\, Sheila Jordan\, Von Freeman\, Terry Callier\, Ken Nordine ”Word Jazz\,” Joshua Redman\, Howard Levy\, Patricia Barber\, Bob Mintzer\, Dave Liebman\, and Sam Rivers. \nBob Rummage is one of the busiest musicians in Chicago. He maintains a versatile schedule of performances with ensembles ranging from the Metropolitan Jazz Octet to the eclectic styles of Alfonso Ponticelli. He has performed with many internationally known musicians—including Dizzy Gillespie\, Nat Adderley\, Benny Golson\, Buddy DeFranco\, Bela Fleck\, and Mississippi blues man Mose Allison—and has performed on albums with Frank Mantooth\, Steve Weist\, Rob Parton\, Colby/Caruso\, Bob Lark\, and Steve Million. Rummage is a sought-after clinician\, having made appearances at various high schools and colleges\, including the University of Illinois\, University of Kentucky\, Emporia State\, University of  Wisconsin-Whitewater\, and the Music For All camp at Illinois State.

SUMMARY:John Penny's Virtual Band and Trio at The High Hat
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis guitarist\, composer\, and singer John Penny brings his Virtual Band\, AND his Guitar Trio to The High Hat for a unique night of music. Both of Penny’s projects aim to deliver inspiration with original World Jazz and American Roots music. The virtual Band calls on Penny’s background in scoring music for film. From decades of composing Jazz and music for mixed media\, the backing tracks come ornamented with exotic accompaniments that interact with Penny’s live guitar and voice. For the Trio\, Penny is joined by bassist Charlie Riddle and drummer Mo Engel. The trio comes with a highly interactive chemistry that makes for engaged listening as the three veteran players let emotions loose. \nPenny has performed thousands of gigs including as a band member and in concert with Jazz greats Eric Gravatt\, Bobby Lyle\, Bernard Purdie\, Jack MacDuff\, and others. His guitar explorations introduce a distinctly emotive style\, fused from the teachings of John Coltrane\, John McLaughlin\, Jimi Hendrix\, Chick Corea\, and great violin concertos. His vocal serenades in the tenor register are reminiscent of Jazz singer Jon Hendricks. Songs performed in English\, Spanish\, and Portuguese resonate with Folk cultures from Latin America\, Africa\, and Europe. Penny is an award winning orchestral composer\, veteran Jazz guitarist\, and singer with a playful fondness for translating human emotion into soundscape and song. www.johnpennymusic.com

SUMMARY:Elvin Bishop & Charlie Musselwhite at the Parkway Theater
DESCRIPTION:Two Blues legends\, one incredible night of music! \nEver since Rock & Roll and Blues Hall Of Famer Elvin Bishop first hit the scene with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band back in 1965\, he’s blazed his own musical trail. Whether he was playing raw\, eye-popping blues\, or penning the evergreen radio hit Fooled Around And Fell In Love\, or touring the world for decades delivering his original\, good-time countrified blues\, Bishop has always inspired his fans with his rowdy guitar playing and witty\, slice-of-life songs. \nCharlie Musselwhite’s six-decade odyssey reads like a bluesman’s epic\, weaving its way from the heart of Mississippi to the soul of Memphis\, through the electric nights of Chicago\, and into the sun-soaked horizons of California. A living legend\, Charlie is proof that the blues — like fine bourbon — only gets richer with time. With 20+ albums under his belt\, a Grammy in hand\, and more than 33 Blues Music Awards lining his path\, Musselwhite’s voice and musicianship continue to deepen — like the roots of the music he so passionately embodies. \nOn the title track of his new album\, Can’t Even Do Wrong Right\, legendary blues guitarist\, songwriter\, and singer Elvin Bishop spins a tale of a not-too-smart criminal getting caught by his own foolish missteps. The shaggy dog story\, fueled by Bishop’s down-home delivery and deep blues slide guitar\, is an affirmation of the Chicago Sun-Times’ ebullient praise: “It’s impossible not to like Bishop. He’s always singing something lowbrow and uplifting.” With his buoyant and deceptively loose-sounding ensemble behind him\, he’s also playing some of the most spirited and distinctive blues slide guitar today. \nAlthough Bishop has been performing his rollicking brand of electrified front porch blues for over 50 years (his first professional gig was as guitarist for Junior Wells’ band in 1962)\, he is as vital and creative an artist today as he was when he first hit the national scene in 1965 with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He is still as slyly good-humored and instantly crowd-pleasing as he was when he was effortlessly creating solo hits during the 1970s. His reemergence on Alligator Records in the late 1980s and into the 1990s\, along with his more recent releases on Blind Pig and Delta Groove\, insure his place on the short list of bona fide blues guitar heroes. Elvin’s music mixes thick blues grooves with timeless rock flavors spiced with a touch of country\, a dab of Moms Mabley’s and Pigmeat Markham’s ribald black comedy\, and the laid back feel of his Northern California home. His guitar playing seems to improve with every performance\, and his songwriting is filled with clever revelations and homespun wisdom. Living Blues says Elvin’s guitar playing is “as full of fresh licks and unbounded energy as the day he and Mike Bloomfield set the blues/rock world on its ear.” \nBorn in Glendale\, CA on October 21\, 1942\, Elvin grew up on a farm in Iowa before relocating to Oklahoma when he was ten. He first got hooked on the blues listening to late night R&B radio as a teenager\, and began collecting\, listening to\, and absorbing blues music. Once Bishop realized that many of his favorite records were recorded in Chicago\, he used his 1959 National Merit Scholarship as a way to get closer to his blues heroes by enrolling in the University of Chicago — its campus surrounded on three sides by the South Side black community. “The first thing I did when I got there\,” Elvin recalls\, “was make friends with the guys working in the cafeteria. Within fifteen minutes I was into the blues scene.” Leaving his physics studies behind\, Bishop turned to blues music full time. He befriended bluesman Little Smokey Smothers and would hang out with him for hours on end. Smothers liked young Bishop and took the willing student under his wing\, teaching Elvin how to really play — and live — the blues. In short order\, Elvin became an accomplished and innovative player. Many years later\, in 2000\, Elvin and Smothers recorded their only album together\, the appropriately titled That’s My Partner!\, for Alligator. \nAfter Elvin crossed paths with harmonica player and fellow University of Chicago student Paul Butterfield\, the two began sitting in together at black blues clubs\, often jamming with Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. They first formed The Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1963\, adding Jerome Arnold on bass\, Sam Lay on drums\, and Mark Naftalin on keyboards. Prior to cutting their debut LP in 1965\, Michael Bloomfield joined the group as second lead guitarist\, and created a groundbreaking\, all-star band. The self-titled The Paul Butterfield Blues Band introduced electric Chicago blues to the rock audience for the first time. With the release of East/West in 1966\, the band’s popularity hit an all-time high. Their straight Chicago blues sounds drifted further into progressive and experimental rock ‘n’ roll and — with two world-class lead guitarists on board — the band helped pave the way for groups featuring multiple virtuoso guitarists\, like The Allman Brothers and Derek and the Dominos. The Rolling Stone Record Guide says that Bishop\, along with Bloomfield\, recorded “brilliant guitar passages that did as much as anything to establish the mystique and heroism of modern rock guitarists.” \nTowards the end of the 1960s\, after recording three albums with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band\, Elvin decided to move on\, heading for the San Francisco area. “I liked it there. I didn’t have to look over my shoulder\,” Bishop recalls. He became a regular at the famed Fillmore Auditorium jam sessions\, playing alongside Jimi Hendrix\, Eric Clapton\, B.B. King\, and many others before embarking on a solo career. He recorded first for Fillmore Records\, then Epic and then for Capricorn\, where his career took off. He charted with Travelin’ Shoes before scoring big in 1975 with “Fooled Around And Fell In Love” (the song reached number three on the pop charts). \nAs Bishop continues to tour and release new music\, his stature just continues to grow. Through the years his music has appeared in film and television\, including the 1997 use of “She Puts Me In The Mood” (from Big Fun) in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. In 2005 he performed on the internationally televised Grammy Awards broadcast alongside Keith Urban\, Tim McGraw\, Gretchen Wilson\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and Allman Brothers’ guitarist Dickey Betts. He recently appeared in the documentary Born In Chicago. In 2012 and 2013 he was nominated for inclusion into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
