He graduated in 2020 with a Master of Music (MM) degree in Contemporary Performance. Whether he was playing raw\, eye-popping blues\, or penning the evergreen radio hit Fooled Around And Fell In Love\, or touring the world for decades delivering his original\, good-time countrified blues\, Bishop has always inspired his fans with his rowdy guitar playing and witty\, slice-of-life songs. \nCharlie Musselwhite’s six-decade odyssey reads like a bluesman’s epic\, weaving its way from the heart of Mississippi to the soul of Memphis\, through the electric nights of Chicago\, and into the sun-soaked horizons of California. A living legend\, Charlie is proof that the blues — like fine bourbon — only gets richer with time. With 20+ albums under his belt\, a Grammy in hand\, and more than 33 Blues Music Awards lining his path\, Musselwhite’s voice and musicianship continue to deepen — like the roots of the music he so passionately embodies. \nOn the title track of his new album\, Can’t Even Do Wrong Right\, legendary blues guitarist\, songwriter\, and singer Elvin Bishop spins a tale of a not-too-smart criminal getting caught by his own foolish missteps. The shaggy dog story\, fueled by Bishop’s down-home delivery and deep blues slide guitar\, is an affirmation of the Chicago Sun-Times’ ebullient praise: “It’s impossible not to like Bishop. He’s always singing something lowbrow and uplifting.” With his buoyant and deceptively loose-sounding ensemble behind him\, he’s also playing some of the most spirited and distinctive blues slide guitar today. \nAlthough Bishop has been performing his rollicking brand of electrified front porch blues for over 50 years (his first professional gig was as guitarist for Junior Wells’ band in 1962)\, he is as vital and creative an artist today as he was when he first hit the national scene in 1965 with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He is still as slyly good-humored and instantly crowd-pleasing as he was when he was effortlessly creating solo hits during the 1970s. His reemergence on Alligator Records in the late 1980s and into the 1990s\, along with his more recent releases on Blind Pig and Delta Groove\, insure his place on the short list of bona fide blues guitar heroes. Elvin’s music mixes thick blues grooves with timeless rock flavors spiced with a touch of country\, a dab of Moms Mabley’s and Pigmeat Markham’s ribald black comedy\, and the laid back feel of his Northern California home. His guitar playing seems to improve with every performance\, and his songwriting is filled with clever revelations and homespun wisdom. Living Blues says Elvin’s guitar playing is “as full of fresh licks and unbounded energy as the day he and Mike Bloomfield set the blues/rock world on its ear.” \nBorn in Glendale\, CA on October 21\, 1942\, Elvin grew up on a farm in Iowa before relocating to Oklahoma when he was ten. He first got hooked on the blues listening to late night R&B radio as a teenager\, and began collecting\, listening to\, and absorbing blues music. Once Bishop realized that many of his favorite records were recorded in Chicago\, he used his 1959 National Merit Scholarship as a way to get closer to his blues heroes by enrolling in the University of Chicago — its campus surrounded on three sides by the South Side black community. “The first thing I did when I got there\,” Elvin recalls\, “was make friends with the guys working in the cafeteria. Within fifteen minutes I was into the blues scene.” Leaving his physics studies behind\, Bishop turned to blues music full time. He befriended bluesman Little Smokey Smothers and would hang out with him for hours on end. Smothers liked young Bishop and took the willing student under his wing\, teaching Elvin how to really play — and live — the blues. In short order\, Elvin became an accomplished and innovative player. Many years later\, in 2000\, Elvin and Smothers recorded their only album together\, the appropriately titled That’s My Partner!\, for Alligator. \nAfter Elvin crossed paths with harmonica player and fellow University of Chicago student Paul Butterfield\, the two began sitting in together at black blues clubs\, often jamming with Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. They first formed The Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1963\, adding Jerome Arnold on bass\, Sam Lay on drums\, and Mark Naftalin on keyboards. Prior to cutting their debut LP in 1965\, Michael Bloomfield joined the group as second lead guitarist\, and created a groundbreaking\, all-star band. The self-titled The Paul Butterfield Blues Band introduced electric Chicago blues to the rock audience for the first time. With the release of East/West in 1966\, the band’s popularity hit an all-time high. Their straight Chicago blues sounds drifted further into progressive and experimental rock ‘n’ roll and — with two world-class lead guitarists on board — the band helped pave the way for groups featuring multiple virtuoso guitarists\, like The Allman Brothers and Derek and the Dominos. The Rolling Stone Record Guide says that Bishop\, along with Bloomfield\, recorded “brilliant guitar passages that did as much as anything to establish the mystique and heroism of modern rock guitarists.” \nTowards the end of the 1960s\, after recording three albums with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band\, Elvin decided to move on\, heading for the San Francisco area. “I liked it there. I didn’t have to look over my shoulder\,” Bishop recalls. He became a regular at the famed Fillmore Auditorium jam sessions\, playing alongside Jimi Hendrix\, Eric Clapton\, B.B. King\, and many others before embarking on a solo career. He recorded first for Fillmore Records\, then Epic and then for Capricorn\, where his career took off. He charted with Travelin’ Shoes before scoring big in 1975 with “Fooled Around And Fell In Love” (the song reached number three on the pop charts). \nAs Bishop continues to tour and release new music\, his stature just continues to grow. Through the years his music has appeared in film and television\, including the 1997 use of “She Puts Me In The Mood” (from Big Fun) in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. In 2005 he performed on the internationally televised Grammy Awards broadcast alongside Keith Urban\, Tim McGraw\, Gretchen Wilson\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and Allman Brothers’ guitarist Dickey Betts. He recently appeared in the documentary Born In Chicago. In 2012 and 2013 he was nominated for inclusion into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

And those are just his side projects. \nLandreth explains his continually expanding musical horizons. “One of the things I love about collaborations with other artists is the element of surprise. When the chemistry is there\, it is always inspiring to find new twists and turns that up the game creatively.” \nWhat if Americana actually encompassed ALL of North America? You’d have the Franco-Acadian inflections of Canada\, as best exemplified by the accordion. Then\, you’d have blues and jazz\, the U.S.’s most original art form. Also\, the lilting grace and fiery passion of the music of Mexico. You’d also have New Orleans’ premiere distillers of this continental musical mélange\, The Iguanas. \nTheir three-decade ride has taken them all over the map musically and geographically. However\, the inescapable patina of their hometown infuses every note they play. They have produced eight studio albums among countless tours and Jazz Fest appearances. They survived a flood that did its best to take their adopted city with it. Therefore\, it’s a testament to the band’s endurance that the same four guys that started playing in the early 1990s are still together.

There\, she has tussled with unimaginative label executives\, covered and owned Beatles songs\, and cast a woman as Jesus. Through it all\, James has carved out an enviable career\, always on her own terms. \nJames has a particular taste for inserting herself into men’s spaces. Here\, she twists hyper-masculine songs to her will\, changing their meanings in the process. Furthermore\, she brings that feminist lens to the forefront in her most recent project\, 2025’s Soul Remains the Same. Moreover\, she reinterprets tracks from AC/DC\, Stone Temple Pilots\, and Pearl Jam. “Something I’ve always loved\, and I’ve done throughout my career\, is sing songs that are not just written by men\, but especially made for men\,” she says. “And make them my own.” \nHere\, Soul Remains the Same transforms testosterone-soaked ‘80s and ‘90s radio classics of her youth into poignant\, soulful\, deeply personal covers. “I don’t try to change something to be clever. I don’t want to change something that’s already great\,” James says. “But sometimes I’ll hear a song and think to myself\, ‘This would be amazing with horns\, or what would this sound like with a choir or a B3?’” James picked which tracks to cover after a road trip on which she and her husband belted along to some old favorites. Then\, she created sexy\, bold versions of cuts like Whitesnake’s “Is This Love”. Also\, a deliciously moody version of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight\, Tonight.”

DESCRIPTION:Dálava\, the genre-defying ensemble led by vocalist Julia Úlehlawith guitarist Aram Bajakian (Lou Reed\, John Zorn\, Diana Krall)\, returns with Understories\, a deeply evocative new album that explores uncharted territories of sound. Seamlessly weaving Moravian folk traditions with an experimental\, improvisational approach\, Understories takes the listener on a journey through captivating sonic worlds. Dálava’s music has received critical acclaim for its expressive depth: fRoots extolled their prior release as “so overwhelming and so intense that it is hard to put into any category…. Saying that The Book of Transfigurations is a masterpiece is not an exaggeration.” \nMost of the pieces in Dálava’s repertoire are inspired by a collection of folk songs compiled in the book Živá Píseň (Living Song) written by Úlehla’s great-grandfather. A biologist and ethnomusicoloist\, Vladimír Úlehla (1888-1947) meticulously transcribed hundreds of folk songs from his hometown\, the Moravian village of Strážnice in southeast Czechia. On Understories Julia Úlehla exhibits an ineffable kinship to these songs\, a deeply-rooted living bond to the land of her father’s and great-grandfather’s birth. The American-born daughter of a refugee from communist Czechoslovakia\, Julia Úlehla directs Dálava’s interpretations of these centuries-old transcriptions\, ensuring they are conferred with a respect not only for the music as a historical artifact\, but as living\, breathing organisms that speak to their metaphysical universality. Dálava\, which means ‘the disappearing line on the horizon\, where sky and land merge into each other\,’ is an apt description of the group’s approach: The music resides in that indeterminate\, liminal space between past and future\, magic and realism\, neither primordial nor of this world. The album is a sonic exploration that transcends time and borders\, fusing disparate traditions into a singular\, emotionally charged experience.

Both Joe and Cameron played alongside some of Prince’s closest associates\, and Joe’s previous band was among the last that Prince personally invited to play at Paisley Park. They’ve also been tapped into the national funk and jazz scenes from the beginning – their first gig was opening for Kamasi Washington\, before they’d even landed on a name.

Often\, the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players. Thus\, this ignited a passion for jazz. \nMoving to New York City\, her talents quickly earned her a reputation among her peers as a matchless song interpreter. She worked with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York’s City Centre\, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself. Additionally\, she earned a 2019 Grammy nomination for her version of “Marry Me a Little”. \nAt the height of her New York success\, new horizons beckoned. Visiting New Orleans\, she fell in love with the energy and diversity of the city and made it her home. Then\, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman\, and together they created her latest album\, 2024’s A Fleur de Peau. \nThe album combines the depth and sophistication of jazz\, the immediacy of pop\, and the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean. Furthermore\, it’s more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before.

He frequently performed with singer/guitarist Mary Cutrufello as well as Sonny Knight and the Lakers\, and he recently became a part of Dylan Hicks’s Small Screens. \nPete James Johnson is a drummer\, composer and educator in the Twin Cities—most often seen playing jazz and improvised music but at home in a variety of musical worlds. He has performed with local artists including the Zacc Harris Group\, Bryan Nichols\, Javier Santiago\, Omar Abdulkarim\, Dosh\, Michael Cain\, Chris Bates’ Red 5\, Will Kjeer\, and\, Adam Meckler. Johnson has also performed with international artists including the Bob Mintzer Big Band\, Alan Broadbent\, Russ Ferrante\, Ambrose Akinmusire\, and Bob Sheppard. Johnson has taught at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University\, the University of Minnesota Morris\, Hamline University\, and the University of Southern California. Johnson’s primary instructors included Peter Erskine (Weather Report\, Steely Dan)\, Ndugu Chancler (Miles Davis\, Michael Jackson)\, Bill Platt (Cincinnati Symphony)\, and National Medal of Arts recipient Morten Lauridsen.
