SUMMARY:Jazz Age Rumpus V — The Music of Sidney Bechet at Hook & Ladder
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Age Rumpus V —\nThe Music of Sidney Bechet\nVintage Music Festival and Southside Aces CD Release!\n\nFeaturing: Southside Aces\, Sidney & Muggsy\, The Boat Note Five with special guest Sam Skavnak\n—\nOnce again Hook and Ladder Theater welcomes listeners and dancers to revel in the sounds of the Jazz Age! Year five of the festival celebrates the famed New Orleanian clarinetist and soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet. You’ll hear his music\, starting with the 1923 hit “Kansas City Man Blues” with Clarence Williams\, through the swinging 1940 quartet with Muggsy Spanier\, the spectacular fireworks of his jazz duels with Louis Armstrong\, all the way to the beautiful 1950s compositions recorded with French jazz orchestras\, which sold more records than the French pop stars of the day.\n\nPaired with this year’s festival is the exciting CD release of Les Oignons\, Southside Aces’ newest recording! Ten tracks of Sidney’s hits. All Bechet\, all day!\n\nDedication\nThis festival is dedicated to Dr. Henry Blackburn\, who opened all our eyes and ears to the amazing world of Sidney Bechet.\n\nSouthside Aces\nYour magnanimous Jazz Age Rumpus hosts\, Southside Aces\, are a Twin Cities institution. For over two decades they’ve brought to life the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton\, the Chicago joys of Louis Armstrong\, the evocative compositions of the young Duke Ellington\, on up to the barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall and the early rock and roll of Fats Domino. Their belief in the contemporary vitality of New Orleans music led to the 2022 release of their eighth album\, Minneapolis Bump\, containing fifteen originals in the style. 2026 will see the release of two more albums: Les Oignons\, the band’s spotlight on the music of Sidney Bechet\, and The Big Beat\, the album you most want to spin at your next New Orleans party.\n\n“By the end of the night\, it felt like the members of Southside Aces were longtime friends of my soul.”\n–From the blog girlattherockshows.com\n\nSidney & Muggsy\nSoprano saxophonist and clarinetist Sam Skavnak leads this quartet created exclusively for Jazz Age Rumpus to bring you the music of the Bechet Spanier Big Four. Those 1940 recordings showed Bechet in a new setting — working with just cornet and a hot club rhythm section of guitar and bass — to create an incredibly light but fiery swing. Taking on the role of cornetist Muggsy Spanier is Dan Eikmeier\, while guitar virtuoso\, Sam Miltich\, and his bassist father\, Matthew Miltich\, provide that propulsive hot club rhythm.\n\n“If you’re hearing this music for the first time\, keep those ears open wide — this is the real thing!”\n-Dan Morgenstern review of the original recordings\n\nThe Boat Note Five with special guest Sam Skavnak\nSince 2018\, The Boat Note Five has dedicated themselves to Louis Armstrong\, celebrating the genius and ebullience of the man who changed music forever. The name of the band is drawn from one of Louis’ many nicknames\, and their repertoire is taken from his nearly fifty-year recording career\, starting with the groundbreaking music he made in the 1920s. The band has three members from Southside Aces: Tony Balluff\, clarinet; Dan Eikmeier\, trumpet; and Dave Michael\, drums. Rounding out the quintet are Josh Granowski on string bass and Rick Carlson on piano. Special for Jazz Age Rumpus: soprano saxophonist Sam Skavnak joins the band to help recreate the epic Louis Armstrong/Sidney Bechet jazz battles.\n\n“Boxing had Ali and Frazier. Jazz had Armstrong and Bechet.”\n-Louis Armstrong biographer Ricky Riccardi\n\nTony Balluff\nFounder and director of Jazz Age Rumpus\, Tony is a clarinetist and composer focusing on early jazz. He received his higher education in traditional jazz from local legends\, The Hall Brothers Jazz Band\, including Charlie DeVore and Butch Thompson\, with a concentration on Sidney Bechet from Dr. Henry Blackburn. He leads many bands in his efforts to bring the Jazz Age into the 21st Century.

SUMMARY:Dálava at the Cedar Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Dálava\, the genre-defying ensemble led by vocalist Julia Úlehlawith guitarist Aram Bajakian (Lou Reed\, John Zorn\, Diana Krall)\, returns with Understories\, a deeply evocative new album that explores uncharted territories of sound. Seamlessly weaving Moravian folk traditions with an experimental\, improvisational approach\, Understories takes the listener on a journey through captivating sonic worlds. Dálava’s music has received critical acclaim for its expressive depth: fRoots extolled their prior release as “so overwhelming and so intense that it is hard to put into any category…. Saying that The Book of Transfigurations is a masterpiece is not an exaggeration.” \nMost of the pieces in Dálava’s repertoire are inspired by a collection of folk songs compiled in the book Živá Píseň (Living Song) written by Úlehla’s great-grandfather. A biologist and ethnomusicoloist\, Vladimír Úlehla (1888-1947) meticulously transcribed hundreds of folk songs from his hometown\, the Moravian village of Strážnice in southeast Czechia. On Understories Julia Úlehla exhibits an ineffable kinship to these songs\, a deeply-rooted living bond to the land of her father’s and great-grandfather’s birth. The American-born daughter of a refugee from communist Czechoslovakia\, Julia Úlehla directs Dálava’s interpretations of these centuries-old transcriptions\, ensuring they are conferred with a respect not only for the music as a historical artifact\, but as living\, breathing organisms that speak to their metaphysical universality. Dálava\, which means ‘the disappearing line on the horizon\, where sky and land merge into each other\,’ is an apt description of the group’s approach: The music resides in that indeterminate\, liminal space between past and future\, magic and realism\, neither primordial nor of this world. The album is a sonic exploration that transcends time and borders\, fusing disparate traditions into a singular\, emotionally charged experience.

SUMMARY:JD Simo & Luther Dickinson: Do the Rump! Tour at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“straight-up blues with a razor edge guitar slash.” – Americana Highways\nTwo of the most electrifying forces in modern roots music converge! Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars\, The Black Crowes) joins JD Simo (Chris Isaak\, Jack White\, Beyoncé\, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis). Here\, they unite as a soul-shaking trio with powerhouse drummer Adam Abrashoff. Their chemistry is deep\, their grooves are dirty\, and their shows are a masterclass in high-octane\, roots-infused blues.  \nLuther\, a four-time Grammy nominee\, is celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of North Mississippi Allstars and a brand-new album. Thus\, he is proving his commitment to pushing Hill Country blues forward. JD\, meanwhile\, has built a career on fearless reinvention. In addition to touring with Chris Isaak\, he’s a key creative on the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere. There\, he worked closely with both Bruce and director Scott Cooper\, supervised the music script\, and coached lead actor Jeremy Allen White (The Bear). Additionally\, he contributed heavily to the film’s score and soundtrack.  \nTheir collaborative album Do The Rump! has been making waves\, with lead single “Come On” hitting #1 on SiriusXM Bluesville. Furthermore\, the sound is raw\, hypnotic\, and thrillingly alive—equal parts Hill Country trance\, psych-soul\, and electrified jam.  \nThese trio shows are rare. The music is greasy. And this is your chance to feel it live.

Each of these musicians is already fully booked in the Twin Cities area: Magraw with Red Planet & BluLuna\, and duos with Eric Gravatt\, Butch Thompson & Bruce Henry; Nichols with Mancrush\, and Zacc Harris Quartet; Epstein with Red Planet\, BluLuna\, Framework\, Firebell and Tall Tales. As Open Story\, Dean Magraw\, Bryan Nichols and Jay Epstein prove to be as effective as collaborators as they are talented as solo performers\, bandleaders\, and sidemen. – Andrea Canter\, JazzPolice.com

SUMMARY:Cyrille Aimée at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Cyrille Aimée grew up in a multilingual household full of music where she danced every day. There\, her soundtrack featured the Afro-Caribbean sounds from her mother’s native Dominican Republic. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine\, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival. Often\, the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players. Thus\, this ignited a passion for jazz. \nMoving to New York City\, her talents quickly earned her a reputation among her peers as a matchless song interpreter. She worked with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York’s City Centre\, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself. Additionally\, she earned a 2019 Grammy nomination for her version of “Marry Me a Little”. \nAt the height of her New York success\, new horizons beckoned. Visiting New Orleans\, she fell in love with the energy and diversity of the city and made it her home. Then\, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman\, and together they created her latest album\, 2024’s A Fleur de Peau. \nThe album combines the depth and sophistication of jazz\, the immediacy of pop\, and the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean. Furthermore\, it’s more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before.

SUMMARY:LAMP feat. Russ Lawton\, Scott Metzger & Ray Paczkowski at Icehouse
DESCRIPTION:6pm Doors / 8pm Showtime \nFull food and beverage available for this show \n$22 Adv (+fees/taxes) $30 Doors (+fees/taxes) 21+ \nLAMP feat. Russ Lawton\, Scott Metzger & Ray Paczkowski Interstate jammers LaMP — featuring Vermont-based Russ Lawton (drums) and Ray Paczkowski (keys)\, alongside Brooklynite Scott Metzger (guitar) — distill singular\, road-honed improv instincts into taut\, instrumental epics. While each of the players has extensive experience with other gigs — Lawton and Paczkowski with the Trey Anastasio Band (TAB) and Soule Monde\, and Metzger through projects such as Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (JRAD) and Medeski\, Martin\, Metzger & Cline (MMMC) — LaMP has hewed its own path. The trio is currently touring behind their second studio collection\, One Of Us\, that packs 10 tracks into 35-minutes of kaleidoscopic interplay and club-shifting grooves. It’s the cleanest distillation of the LaMP sound yet\, a mission statement of improvisational group-think and compositional chops. Throughout its runtime\, One Of Us acts as a showcase for the myriad of sonic flavors LaMP brings to the table\, delivering a listen which works both as deep headphone immersion or a packable-party custom-tailored to deliver the jams to upcoming 2025 tour hangs. As word has spread and crowds have grown with each subsequent tour\, it’s become clear that LaMP ft. Russ Lawton\, Scott Metzger & Ray Paczkowski will be a musical force to be reckoned with for the foreseeable future.

SUMMARY:Laurels String Quartet (feat. Aby Wolf & Eric Mayson) at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:A vital force in the Minneapolis music scene with reach far beyond it\, the Laurels String Quartet has supported stars including Father John Misty\, Semisonic\, and Ondara but have never stepped out as headliners themselves. This March\, that changes! The Laurels will host a five-week residency at Berlin\, joined by a rotating cast of exceptional artists from their creative orbit. \nThis evening\, Laurels String Quartet and Aby Wolf will further develop their electric collaboration of voice and strings. The quartet will also be joined by multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter\, and producer Eric Mayson in a genre-bending performance that blurs the lines between indie and chamber music. \nDoors for the first set will open at 5:30 p.m.\, while doors for the second set will open at 7:45 p.m. \nLaurels String Quartet:\nJosh Misner – Violin\nLaura Harada – Violin\nErica Burton – Viola\nJacqueline Ultan – Cello \n⊹ \nAfter a chance meeting over a decade ago\, the Laurels String Quartet quickly became a staple of the Minneapolis music scene. Their collective instinct for tuning into the emotional frequency of a song has amassed the group collaborators near and far. Artists such as Belle & Sebastian\, Father John Misty\, Lucius\, jeremy messersmith\, Macklemore\, Dan Wilson\, Jason Mraz\, Rogue Valley\, Motion City Soundtrack\, the New Standards\, and Ondara have sought their company on stage and in the studio. The quartet has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman\, PBS\, The Current\, and NPR and has performed on stages across the country\, from the celebrated outdoor festival Rock The Garden at the Walker Art Center to the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn\, NY. \nAby Wolf grew up in the Driftless Region of northwestern Illinois\, honing her ear for harmonies by singing while her mother practiced Erik Satie piano songs. At the age of 19\, Wolf moved to Minneapolis and began collaborating with musicians across a spectrum of hip-hop\, neo-soul\, weirdo electronic improv\, rock\, jazz\, and classical crossover. Whether she is writing vocal arrangements; fulfilling commissions; or performing in clubs\, theaters\, and schools everywhere from Brainerd to Bratislava to Beijing\, she brings an elastic skillset and a palpable element of joy to whatever endeavor she pursues. A lifelong learner with an ever-expanding curiosity\, Wolf has a sound distinguished not by typical markers of genre or instrumentation\, but by her impressive range of expression and experimentation. \nComposer\, collaborator\, and multi-instrumentalist Eric Mayson has an insatiable curiosity that pulls him in many directions. He works with theaters\, dance companies\, bands\, and orchestras\, and he loves playing Dungeons & Dragons and reading history. In 2019\, he began training in aviation\, and he is currently working as a flight instructor at Mankato Regional Airport.

SUMMARY:The New Standards at Crooners Supper Club
DESCRIPTION:Jazz\, Tradition\, Cabaret\nMinnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock\, from the freedom of jazz\, to the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nChan Poling: Piano\, Vocals \nJohn Munson: Bass\, Vocals \nSteve Roehm: Vibraphone \nThe New Standards is a “revelatory” (StarTribune) Twin-Cities-based trio with a global following. Formed in 2005 as an off-shoot project between three Minneapolis-based musicians and friends\, The New Standards has grown into a globe-spanning adventure — filling theaters and clubs and spawning several CDs\, videos\, cartoons\, and dance and theater projects that have charmed and delighted an ever-multiplying legion of faithful fans.
