SUMMARY:The Belfast Cowboys at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:The Belfast Cowboys is a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison. Entering their third decade\, they are adept at mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds. Led by veteran songwriter/guitarist Terry Walsh\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene. They have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002. \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands. He toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001 Terry hit upon the idea of forming a Van Morrison tribute band. Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \nMany musicians have played with the band\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established. It includes Dan Kowalke (guitar\, vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota (keyboards\, backing vocals). The horn section includes Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute). Bandleader Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers. Terry’s own originals have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, and New York’s Times Square. Once they opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people.

SUMMARY:Amanda Pascali at the Cedar Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:As the rising voice of America’s most ethnically diverse generation of young people\, singer-songwriter Amanda Pascali writes music that speaks to the experience of growing up as a first-generation American. Blending folk/American influences with Mediterranean\, Balkan\, and Latin rhythms\, Pascali’s songs are powerful tales of America told through the eyes of immigrants and those who have always felt like the “other.” \nAmanda Pascali embodies the complexity of modern identity. Born to a mother from Cairo who grew up in France and an Italian father raised in Romania\, she’s a mixed-race\, bilingual Gen Z troubadour perpetually caught between worlds. Quoting poet Ijeoma Umebinyuo\, she says\, “I’m often ‘too foreign for here\, too foreign for home\, and never enough for both.’” Rather than lamenting this displacement\, Pascali has transformed it into her artistic superpower.

SUMMARY:Los Lobos at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:It’s a matter of time. Fifty years to be exact. And in that time Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work\, a legacy of greatness. The numbers are staggering: 100+ gigs a year for five decades running\, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. And that’s just at the live shows. \nThey’ve also recorded seventeen studio albums\, seven live LPs\, three compilations\, two EPs\, two DVDs\, and contributed over forty guest appearances on their friends’ recordings. They have garnered five Grammys\, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction and the ALMA Ritchie Valens Pioneer Award. \nBut beyond all the hoopla and applause (and the source of it all\, really) is the tremendous heart. Rather\, hearts. Cinco corazones. Five blood brothers who have dedicated their off-stage time to helping others\, working for peace and justice. Further\, they’ve penned some of the most literate and important music of their time. They transform the hard cries from the East L.A. barrio into songs of hope\, tales of common folk finding ways to endure. \nThe young wolves were weaned on late-night radio’s soul\, R&B\, and doo-wop. Were cured through the African-American currents of the blues\, jazz\, and rock ‘n’ roll. An amalgam. As proud Chicanos\, their songs have always glistened with the distillation from their Mexican and Latin American roots. \nQuite simply\, they are one of the tightest\, one of the best\, one of the most prolific bands ever. And\, amazingly\, with the original founding members as the pack the entire time. Unprecedented. As their liner notes put it\, quite simply: “Los Lobos still are David Hidalgo\, Louie Pérez\, Jr.\, Cesar Rosas\, Conrad Lozano\, Steve Berlin.”

SUMMARY:BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet at the Parkway Theater
DESCRIPTION:For the past 50+ years\, GRAMMY Award-winning Cajun legends BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet have been making some of the most potent and popular Cajun music on the planet. \nBorn out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members\, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals\, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz\, blues rock\, folk\, swamp pop\, Zydeco\, country and bluegrass — captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans\, to Carnegie Hall\, then all the way across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England. \nLaissez les bon temps rouler! \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir most recent album and the 25th in their fifty-plus-year career\, is titled From Bamako to Carencro\, alluding the cultural and migratory connection between Bamako\, in Mali\, West Africa\, and Louisiana (symbolized in name by the Lafayette\, LA suburb of Carencro)\, a connection that draws a sonic bloodline back to BeauSoleil’s roots. Since becoming the first Cajun band to win a GRAMMY with L’amour Ou La Folie (their Traditional Folk Album\, released in 1998) and then a second GRAMMY in 2010\, Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival\, BeauSoleil has garnered many accolades\, including a total of twelve GRAMMY nominations. They are regular guests on Garrison Keillor’s NPR show A Prairie Home Companion\, where Keillor has dubbed them as “the best Cajun band in the world\,” and their music is so integral to the Cajun culture that they have been featured on the critically-acclaimed New Orleans–based HBO series\, Treme. Critics unanimously agree that it is “bon temps\, every time they play\,” (New York Times).

SUMMARY:R Carlos Nakai at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“Nakai is creating… a body of work that could be considered as modern as classical music.” – Focus Magazine\nR. Carlos Nakai is widely considered the world’s premier performer of the Native American flute. Also\, he is the only American Native performer performing in the Indigenous genre to achieve a Platinum Record. His Canyon Trilogy has sold over 1 million copies. Additionally\, Nakai has a successful career in many genres of music. He is an eleven-time Grammy nominee and serves as an effective ambassador in reaching new concert audiences. \nNakai stands as one of the most renowned and influential American Indian musicians of the modern era. He has spent decades weaving the ancient sounds of his heritage with contemporary musical forms. Thus\, he created a body of work that transcends genre and brings Indigenous traditions to audiences worldwide.  \nNakai grew up steeped in the stories\, songs\, and communal values of his ancestors. Living in the Southwest United States\, he experienced both the challenges and the beauty of life as an Indigenous person in a changing world. His family’s encouragement and his exposure to traditional ceremonies laid the foundation for his later artistic journey. He also gained an early appreciation for the importance of cultural preservation. Here\, this theme would become central to his life’s work. \nNakai approaches the Native American flute with both innovation and respect. Rather than simply replicating traditional songs\, he has expanded the instrument’s expressive possibilities. Furthermore\, he employs new fingering techniques\, extended melodies\, and harmonics. Here\, he blends the flute’s haunting tones with elements of jazz\, classical\, and world music. He also composes original works for flute integrating influences from his heritage with contemporary sensibilities. His music carries a universal message of peace\, healing\, and connection to the land.
