SUMMARY:Dean Magraw\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein at the Hat!
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by decades of performing and recording with a cornucopia of heroic Artists\, Dean Magraw’s poetic musical dynamism mines the depths of passionate healing melody stirring up textures of the unusual and the familiar as the music weaves the simple story of how we feel right now.\n“Dean’s guitar playing transcends\, transports and lifts the soul to a higher level as he weaves\, cajoles and entices every note from his instrument. The note\, length of note\, tone of note\, the bending of the note; every colour of the note is explored and delivered with a master’s care and love. Just as important are the silences with which he knits his music… these can only come with being at one with one’s art. Dean Magraw is an incredible world class musician who’s modesty only makes him more appreciated by the listener.” -Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (Altan)\n“Dean Magraw… so liquid\, lyrical and effortless it’s like listening to a dancer.” -Steve Tibbetts\n“Dean Magraw unveils soulful melodic grooves intricately designed to heal the broken dancer\, confuse the boldest mathematician\, and eradicate ennui in our lifetime.” -Nick Lethert \nHome

SUMMARY:Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:In Chicago\, a city overflowing with unrivaled blues talent\, world-renowned Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials have been standing tall for over thirty years. There\, the band’s big sound is as real and hard-hitting as Chicago blues gets. It’s fueled by Lil’ Ed’s gloriously rollicking slide work and deep blues string bending\, along with his rough-edged\, soulful vocals. The Chicago Sun-Times says\, “Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials are the hottest purveyors of bottleneck boogie to come out of Chicago since Hound Dog Taylor.” \nLil’ Ed Williams comes to the blues naturally. His uncle\, slide guitar king and master songwriter J.B. Hutto\, taught him how to feel\, not just play the blues. Nine albums and thousands of performances later\, Lil’ Ed is now universally hailed as a giant of the genre. Additionally\, the band includes bassist (and Ed’s half-brother) James “Pookie” Young\, guitarist Mike Garrett and drummer Kelly Littleton. Also\, they have remained together for over thirty years\, an extraordinary feat for any group. Moreover\, the band fuels Ed’s songs with their rock-solid\, road-tested\, telepathic musicianship. \nThe group took home the Living Blues Award for Best Live Performer in 2011\, 2012 and 2013. They won the prestigious Blues Music Award for Band Of The Year in both 2007 and 2009. The Associated Press says\, “Williams fills Chicago’s biggest shoes with more life and heat than anyone on stage today.” \nTheir infectious energy\, joyful showmanship and masterful playing have been honed to a razor’s edge by their many years together. Lil’ Ed\, Pookie\, Mike and Kelly have seen sports stars and presidents\, musical fads and fashion trends come and go.

SUMMARY:The 3 Ms Third Annual Celebration // Minnesota Music Masters: McLaughlin/Monroe/Mayer at the Parkway Theater
DESCRIPTION:A night of exceptional original compositions from three highly-awarded Minnesota artists whose careers span decades\, musical genres\, and across the globe. What can you expect this first Monday in March?  Melody Melody Melody! Featuring Billy McLaughlin\, Michael Monroe\, and Peter Mayer! \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmmy Award-winner and acoustic guitar vanguard\, Billy McLaughlin returns to The Parkway with more new compositions from the far reaches of the solo guitar galaxy. If you don’t know Billy’s music\, or what he’s been through to keep making it\, this show is a must-see. Acoustic guitar that defies gravity. \n“…you might swear Billy McLaughlin is two of the greatest acoustic guitar players you’ve ever heard.”—Pittsburgh Post Gazette \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Monroe\, “MN Acoustic Music Master\,” (Star Tribune) performs original music on vocals\, crystal/bamboo flutes\, and plays Seaton Guitars from the Gunflint Trail\, hand-crafted with 200-year-old wood from the bottom of Lake Superior. \nMonroe’s award-winning instrumental soundtracks have been featured on PBS/CBC and the Toronto Enviro/New York Indie Film Fests in Chased By The Light; and was also awarded an Emmy for Soaring On Mended Wings. \nMonroe returned to the Twin Cities following 28 years on the North Shore of Lake Superior near Grand Marais\, 11 of which were “off the grid” where he recorded his first 12 albums using solar power. He presented Log Cabin Concerts in his cabin for 800 people a year for 17 years\, which were featured on KSTP’s Jason Davis’ OnTheRoad\, and in Lake Superior and Cabin Life Magazines. \n“With heartfelt sincerity and a poetic touch in both the lyrics and music\, Monroe explores subtle\, quiet places that spark the imagination.”—Wintersong CD Review\, City Pages  \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMinnesota’s Peter Mayer has been singing and songwriting full-time for 25 years\, performing in venues across the United States and beyond. He writes songs for a small planet–songs about interconnectedness and the human journey — songs about life on earth and the mysterious and wondrous fact of our existence. He also writes songs about dress hats\, pumpkins and pajamas\, and even love and freight trains just like a good folk musician should. His music has been performed by artists like Kathy Mattea\, David Wilcox\, Claudia Schmidt\, Anne Hills\, Priscilla Herdman\, Darryl Purpose\, Billy Jonas\, and Ronny Cox\, to name a few. His work has been included in song books\, church hymnals\, and folk radio playlists across the country. Peter has eleven albums to his credit\, and has sold over 100\,000 of them. SUMMARY:Emmett Cohen Trio at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen has emerged as one of his generation’s pivotal art figures. A recognized prodigy\, Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three. There\, his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality\, technique\, and concept. Downbeat observed that his “nimble touch\, measured stride and warm harmonic vocabulary indicate he’s above any convoluted technical showmanship.” In the same spirit\, Cohen has noted that playing jazz is “about communicating the deepest levels of humanity and individuality. It’s essentially about connections\,” both among musicians and with audiences. He leads his namesake ensemble\, the Emmet Cohen Trio\, and is a vibrant solo performer. Furthermore\, he is in constant demand as a sideman. Here\, he possesses a fluid technique\, an innovative tonal palette\, and an extensive repertoire\, Cohen plays with the command of a seasoned veteran and the passion of an artist fully devoted to his medium. \nEmmet Cohen is committed to the intergenerational transfer of artistic knowledge\, history\, and traditions. His signature undertaking is the Masters Legacy Series\, a celebratory set of recordings and interviews honoring legendary jazz musicians. He serves as both producer and pianist for each album in the series. The goal of this ongoing project is to provide musicians of multiple generations with a forum. Thus\, they transfer the unwritten folklore that is America’s unique musical idiom. Cohen has observed that playing jazz “is enriched immeasurably by connecting and studying with jazz masters\, forging backward to the very creation of the art form.” Volume one of the series features drummer Jimmy Cobb\, and volume two spotlights bassist Ron Carter. Future Masters Legacy Series releases will include Cohen’s recordings with Benny Golson\, Tootie Heath\, and George Coleman.

SUMMARY:Laurels String Quartet Residency at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:A vital force in the Minneapolis music scene with reach far beyond it\, the Laurels String Quartet has supported stars including Father John Misty\, Semisonic\, and Ondara but have never stepped out as headliners themselves. This March\, that changes! The Laurels will host a five-week residency at Berlin\, joined by a rotating cast of exceptional artists from their creative orbit. \nFor the inaugural evening of the Laurels’ residency\, storytellers Annie Humphrey and Barbara Cohen will present a program of moving\, evocative new arrangements alongside the quartet and go-to guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker. \nDoors for the first set will open at 5:30 p.m.\, while doors for the second set will open at 7:45 p.m. \nLaurels String Quartet:\nJosh Misner – Violin\nDevan Moran – Violin\nErica Burton – Viola\nJacqueline Ultan – Cello \nMarch 1 – featuring Barbara Cohen & Annie Humphrey \nAnnie Humphrey is a grandmother\, veteran\, seamstress\, visual artist\, seasonal gift harvester who writes songs and sings them during “the in between.”  OR maybe she is a singer/songwriter\, grandmother\, seamstress\, visual artist who harvests Earth gifts during “the in between.” OR maybe she just does her best to fit it all in where it all fits in.  So far\, it works for her. \nBUT\, the purpose for this bio is to say a bit about Annie as a singer/songwriter.  The age old question is: How long does it take to write a song? \nAnnie’s answer: “My whole life. We all have our own stories: the ones we live\, the ones we tell ourselves in our head\, the ones we post on social media. Which [ones are] real? I try to articulate my reality through songs that have been forming in my head since I began my ceremony of life.” \n⊹ \nMinneapolis native Barbara Cohen is an award-winning composer\, singer\, and songwriter whose luminous voice and cross-genre artistry span folk\, electronica\, and modern cinematic soundscapes. A founding member of Brother Sun Sister Moon (Virgin Records) and former frontwoman of Farm Accident (Red House Records)\, Cohen has collaborated with England’s electronic pioneers Orbital and France’s Air and released the acclaimed solo album California. Her work has been praised as “a gorgeous\, dark-streaked evocation of bitter truths\, yearning\, and redemption” (City Pages) and for “an absolutely breathtaking voice” (Iowa City Press Citizen). Now back in Minneapolis after years in Los Angeles composing for film and television\, Cohen continues to create with Little Lizard—her long-time collaborators Jacqueline Ultan\, Jeremy Ylvisaker\, and Marc Anderson—with a new EP planned for 2026. Her work endures for its clarity\, depth\, and patience: reminders that reinvention can be as simple as returning home to the sound that’s always been yours. \n⊹ \nAfter a chance meeting over a decade ago\, the Laurels String Quartet quickly became a staple of the Minneapolis music scene. Their collective instinct for tuning into the emotional frequency of a song has amassed the group collaborators near and far. Artists such as Belle & Sebastian\, Father John Misty\, Lucius\, jeremy messersmith\, Macklemore\, Dan Wilson\, Jason Mraz\, Rogue Valley\, Motion City Soundtrack\, the New Standards\, and Ondara have sought their company on stage and in the studio. The quartet has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman\, PBS\, The Current\, and NPR and has performed on stages across the country\, from the celebrated outdoor festival Rock The Garden at the Walker Art Center to the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn\, NY. \nPhoto by Nate Ryan \n

SUMMARY:Nicholas David’s 5th Annual : Songs of Love ‘n Loss at Crooners Supper Club
DESCRIPTION:Music From the Heart For the Heart\nAfter 5 years in the making\, Nicholas David is celebrating his first vinyl release\, More Than Music. The St.Paul singer/songwriter has been making music from the heart for the heart for nearly 30 years. Like the mighty Mississippi River\, David’s musical journey rocks n rolls like a cosmic current that’s taken him coast to coast and across the pond. From NBC’s THE VOICE where he met BILL WITHERS\, sang with SMOKEY ROBINSON and finished 3rd place on his season\, to riding along the rock n roll highway with THE ALLMAN BROTHERS sons! Come celebrate an evening where dreams and reality mix into music and memories. \nNicholas David is geographically connected to the storied music history that produced a Dylan and a Prince. But the born-and-bred Minnesota artist strangely remains a kindred spirit channeling gritty soulful southern singers hundreds of miles away down the legendary Mississippi River to Memphis and New Orleans. Now on his new album\, More Than Music\, the bearded and beaded dude on the keyboards reminds fans and new listeners alike that his third-place finish on “The Voice” in 2012 was more than just a lucky preview of things to come and songs to love. \n“A mix of the growl of Dr. John with the silk of Marvin Gaye” – Chicago Tribune

SUMMARY:Shemekia Copeland at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Shemekia Copeland possesses one of the most instantly recognizable and deeply soulful roots music voices of our time. The multi-Grammy nominee is beloved and honored worldwide for the fearlessness\, honesty and humor of her revelatory songs. Additionally\, she is celebrated for her winning\, engaging personality. The Chicago Tribune says\, “Copeland is the greatest female blues vocalist working today. There’s no mistaking the majesty of her instrument\, nor the ferocity of her delivery.” \nOn Copeland’s latest album\, 2024’s Blame It On Eve\, the songs all hit hard. Here\, jaw-dropping performances instantly take hold and command repeated listening. “There’s serious business on the new album\,” Copeland says. “But there are a lot of smiles here too\, a lot of joyous moments. It’s my blues for sure but it’s the brighter side. Issues are always important to me\, but so is rocking\, dancing and just having fun. And that’s something we all can all agree on.”  \nWith Blame It On Eve\, Copeland embarks on what she calls “a vacation from all the heaviness.” It features twelve new songs that tackle subjects as important as a woman’s right to choose and climate change. However\, it also leaves space for Copeland to have fun and unwind. Here\, Copeland is inspired throughout.  \nForbes declared\, “Shemekia is fearless\, honest and hopeful…she holds back nothing as she delivers hard-hitting musical truths.” Further\, John Prine paid her a huge compliment when he said\, “She simply doesn’t sound like anybody else.” And none other than Copeland’s friend\, the legendary Mavis Staples\, announced\, “I am so happy Shemekia is delivering these songs that the world needs to hear. Her voice is strong and soulful\, and her message comes from her heart.”

SUMMARY:Tinsley Ellis: Labor of Love Tour at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“A potent set of fierce folk blues… joyous and triumphant” – Living Blues\n  \nAccording to Atlanta-based blues guitarist\, singer and songwriter Tinsley Ellis\, his new\, first-ever solo acoustic album\, 2024’s Naked Truth is both “a departure and an arrival.” Ellis has recorded and traveled the world for over four decades. There\, he delivers his feral\, guitar-fueled\, original electric blues-rock to ever-growing audiences at concert halls\, festivals\, and clubs. Naked Truth is steeped in the folk-blues traditions of Muddy Waters\, Skip James\, Son House\, Robert Johnson and Leo Kottke.  \nTo the casual fan\, this might seem to be a new direction. But for Ellis\, it’s an extension of his music\, as he taps into the raw essence of the blues. “This is a record I’ve always wanted to make and one that my longtime fans have been asking for.” Also\, he notes that he’s included an acoustic mini-set in his concert performances for years.  \nOn Naked Truth\, Ellis swaps his blistering\, guitar-fueled full-band workouts for equally passionate\, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. His famed guitar chops and musical creativity are on full display throughout the album’s twelve songs\, including nine originals.  \nEllis has brought his music to fans live in person to all fifty United States. Additionally\, he has performed in Canada\, across Europe\, Australia and South America. He’s earned the love and respect of many of his fellow musicians. Thus\, he shares stages with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram\, The Allman Brothers\, Warren Haynes\, Oliver Wood\, Buddy Guy\, the Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Gov’t Mule\, Widespread Panic\, and more. Also\, legends including Otis Rush\, James Cotton\, Gregg Allman\, Jimmy Buffett\, Son Seals\, Koko Taylor and Albert Collins. Furthermore\, mega-star guitarist Joe Bonamassa calls Ellis “a national treasure.”
