Featuring the music of composers Asuka Kakitani and JC Sanford\, the ensemble presents many of the top musicians in the area and will host special guests Mark Urness on bass and Russ Johnson on trumpet\, as well as local masters such as Kavy Kaviraj\, Jake Baldwin\, Pete Whitman\, Jeff Rinear\, and Dave Hagedorn. Evolving as experienced large ensemble composers in New York City for several years\, Kakitani and Sanford combined their efforts upon their relocation to MN in 2016 and have made appearances at Crooners\, Saturday Jazz at the Black Dog\, kj’s hideaway\, and Anoka-Ramsey Community College Jazz Festival. The couple has been featured locally on Jazz88\, MinnPost\, and the Star Tribune over the years. \nAsuka Kakitani: Composer\, Conductor\nJC Sanford: Composer\, Trombone\nDave Milne\, Brian Handeland\, Pete Whitman\, Bryan Murray\, Bruce Thornton: Woodwinds\nRiley Helgeson\, Tom Krochock\, Jake Baldwin\, Russ Johnson: Trumpets\nJeff Rinear\, Kirsten Warfield\, Brooklynne Audette: Trombones\nDave Hagedorn\, Kavyesh Kaviraj\, Mark Urness\, Ben Ehrlich: Rhythm\nAnya Menk: Voice \nAsuka Kakitani and JC Sanford are both award-winning composers who cut their teeth in New York City-based ensembles before establishing themselves as impactful forces on the Twin Cities big band scene\, including the formation of Inatnas Orchestra and co-founding the Twin Cities Jazz Composers Workshop in 2017. Each has released internationally acclaimed large ensemble albums and have been acknowledged in DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Polls several times over the years. They have each received McKnight Composer Fellowships\, as well as grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, Southeast Minnesota Arts Council\, the Jerome Foundation\, and others. Sanford has also conducted several distinguished large ensembles\, including the 3x-Grammy nominated John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble\, the North German Radio (NDR) Big Band\, and the Alice Coltrane Orchestra featuring Reggie Workman and Jack DeJohnette. Kakitani was featured on the international radio program “PRI’s The World” and is currently working on a commission for the world-class percussion ensemble Third Coast Percussion.

The quartet will perform original compositions off Cavanagh’s upcoming album\, which was recorded in Tokyo in 2025 with Le Boeuf and Fukumori. Contemporary jazz featuring some of the best in the world. \nBand Members:\nDan Cavanagh – Piano/Compositions\nRemy Le Boeuf – Alto Saxophone\nShinya Fukumori – Drums\nGraydon Peterson – Bass \n⊹ \nSt. Paul native Dan Cavanagh is a composer and pianist whose music spans jazz and contemporary classical music. He has been commissioned by a wide range of organizations throughout North America and Europe\, and his music continues to be performed across the globe. Cavanagh has released five jazz CDs as a leader\, his most recent with pianist James Miley and drummer John Hollenbeck on S/N Alliance Records. Cavanagh has performed extensively throughout North America\, Europe\, Asia\, and Central America as a pianist. He has appeared with Grammy winners Irma Thomas\, Adonis Rose\, and Joe McCarthy and a wide number of jazz artists across the world.  He is a professor of composition and jazz studies and the Pamela O. Hamel/Board of Advisors director of the Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \nRemy Le Boeuf is a six-time Grammy-nominated composer and saxophonist whose music is rooted in the jazz tradition and overlaps into contemporary classical and indie rock realms. Le Boeuf is also the founder of the jazz orchestra Assembly of Shadows and the chief conductor of the Nordkraft Big Band. He has worked with a range of collaborators\, including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis; Linda May Han Oh; Dayna Stephens; Haim; Knower; JACK Quartet; and his twin brother Pascal\, with whom he co-leads the experimental quintet Le Boeuf Brothers. \nShinya Fukumori is known for his melodic and rhythmic approach with a wide range of dynamics to drum-set playing. Born in Osaka\, Japan\, and now based in Tokyo\, his unique and sensitive cymbal work creates a very distinctive sound. In 2013\, he relocated to Munich\, Germany\, and released his debut album For 2 Akis on ECM Records with his trio in 2018. In 2020\, he launched his own music label\, nagalu\, and released its first full album Another Story. A year later\, Fukumori created a second label\, S/N Alliance\, to create opportunities and expand possibilities for up-and-coming artists not just in Japan\, but from all around the world. Fukumori frequently works as a producer as well\, building a bridge between his identity and music’s universality. \nGraydon Peterson is a bassist and composer living in Minneapolis. He regularly performs with a variety of vocalists and small ensembles\, including Arne Fogel\, Wayne Anthony\, Firebell\, Snowblind\, Charanga Tropical\, Twin Cities Latin Jazz Orchestra\, Tropical Zone Orchestra\, D’Lakes\, Babatunde Leah’s “Rhythm’s Mama\,” and ThoughtCast. Peterson has accompanied world-renowned jazz drummer Francisco Mela for a series of concerts in Havana\, Cuba. He has also performed with Delfeayo Marsalis\, Gary Bartz\, Randy Brecker\, Ben Wendel\, Jorge Pacheco\, and Mayito Rivera. Peterson is also the founder of a successful jam session held every week at Whitey’s Old Town Saloon in northeast Minneapolis. A consummate accompanist\, writer\, and arranger\, he has become one of the backbones of the jazz scene in the Twin Cities.

In 1965\, Don was named the promotion man for The Beatles’ U.S. tour\, marking a pivotal moment in music history. Audiences around the world have been enthralled with his wide sonic palette and limitless rhythmic possibilities on the drums. A deep love of jazz\, metal\, folk\, hip-hop\, ambient\, idm\, and classical music has helped shaped Devin’s unique voice and vision on the drums both as a leader and as a sideman. His highly personal and creative drumming can be heard within the realm of jazz having performed with Greg Osby\, Bill Carrothers\, Jason Marsalis\, Billy Peterson\, David Hazeltine\, Jerry Bergonzi\, Dayna Stephens\, and Joe Lovano as well as indie- folk bands like Field Report\, Caley Conway\, and indie rappers R.A.P. Ferreira and Serengeti. Devin can be heard on over 50 albums of genre-bending original music. Devin currently composes music for his newest group—the Devin Drobka Trio\, featuring Matt Blair and Jakob Heniemann—which draws upon his love of contemporary classical music and minimalism and his multi-horn group\, Bell Dance Songs\, which is a response to his love of Albert Ayler\, Paul Motian\, and Ornette Coleman. Devin’s music has been described as “sounding like nothing else in midwestern jazz” and “gorgeous\, innovative.”

She collaborates with her hometown community to  decolonize within and through that community.  \n2024’s Milton + esperanza is spalding’s first new album since she released 2021’s songwrights apothecary lab. That album\, and 2019’s 12 Little Spells\, both won Grammy Awards (Best Jazz Vocal Album). spalding released a protest song in 2024 entitled “Não Ao Marco Temporal” that was recorded in Rio. A five-time Grammy winner and eleven-time nominee\, spalding has previously released eight full length albums. She has worked with her heroes\, including Milton Nascimento and Wayne Shorter. Furthermore\, she has collaborated with Q-Tip\, Janelle Monae\, Robert Glasper\, Terri Lyne Carrington and many others. \nShe also co-leads workshops and therapeutic-arts research residencies. She does this through her dance project “Off Brand gOdds” and her therapeutic music incubator “Songwrights Apothecary Lab”. In 2024\, she received the Doris Duke Foundation Artist Award and was a 2016 Ford Foundation “Art of Change” Fellow. \n*European-African ancestored being influenced by American cultures living in Indigenous Territories of Turtle Island.

DESCRIPTION:Marc Ribot\, guitar\nSebastian Steinberg\, bass (Soul Coughing)\nChad Taylor\, drums\nBriggan Krauss\, saxophone (Sexmob) \nMarc Ribot was never suited to play straight jazz. Ribot realized that in his 20s while trying to bop with veteran organist Jack McDuff. But Ribot soon found his calling—and the core of his mission\, really—both in the city’s melting pot and in its no-holds-barred No Wave scene. There\, he threw out the rules he was trying to ace and joined the Lounge Lizards. Then\, he accepted Tom Waits’ invitation to play on Rain Dogs. Ribot stopped trying to sound like the guitarist he was supposed to be and became\, instead\, the guitar player he was.  \nFor over four decades\, he has been an indispensable collaborator to the likes of Waits\, Robert Plant\, and John Zorn. Additionally\, so many others that his list of credits reads like a library’s card catalog. But Ribot has also been a great bandleader\, from his renegade bunch Ceramic Dog to his committed Latin band\, Los Cubanos Postizos.  \nTwenty years ago\, Ribot convened a glorious quartet\, Spiritual Unity\, to tackle the songbook of Albert Ayler. Then\, Roy Campbell died and Henry Grimes had to step away for health concerns. However\, Ribot and drummer Chad Taylor wanted to maintain the exploratory energy of that band with a new lineup. Ribot called on Sebastian Steinberg\, a collaborator and confidant since the ‘80s and an anchor of his great Shrek.  \nThe new group is Hurry Red Telephone. During the quartet’s 2025 tours\, guitarist Ava Mendoza added the combustible extra ingredient. Here\, her chemistry with Ribot seemed to push each of them to play a bit harder\, meaner\, wilder. For 2026\, saxophonist Briggan Krauss will step into that role with Hurry Red Telephone. Thus begins yet another chapter in Ribot’s ever-unfolding quest to find new ways to play.
