SUMMARY:Nathan Graham with His Band and Special Guest Laamar at Parkway Theater
DESCRIPTION:Soul & blues sensation Nathan Graham returns to The Parkway by popular demand\, this time performing with his full band! Minnesota troubadour LAAMAR opens the night with an intimate set. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen you think of a singer-songwriter\, who comes to mind? Nathan says it probably isn’t somebody who looks like he does\, and he wants to change that. \nBorn and raised in Chicago\, Graham meshes South Side Blues with Nashville Americana\, beginning his career backing blues singers at famous haunts like Buddy Guy’s Legends and Kingston Mines. He spent a decade as a guitar-for-hire before picking up a mic to tell his own stories on the stage. Soulful and steady\, Graham’s music offers a raw introspective of the human condition that’s both painful and comforting. His guitar conveys heartbreak\, lyrics tell stories of regret\, but his rich vocal delivery offers the remedy. \nHaving brought his songs on international tours with both major label and indie acts\, Graham is challenging the notion of what it means to be a singer-songwriter. He’s driving inclusivity within the genre\, and he hopes to evoke a sense of understanding in the process. \n“I’m writing about universal experiences\,” he says. “I’m writing music to connect my story to yours\, show you all that we have in common\, and maybe help both of us feel less alone.” \n“Stellar debut…[Graham] manages to blend Soul\, Rock\, and Americana into an irresistible sound… This is a record that’s begging to be heard live.” — GLIDE \n“A powerhouse singer with a deep drive to connect\, the Chicago-born-and-raised Graham tenderly wraps his fears and anxieties in velvety arrangements infused with a wide range of influences from rock and folk to soul and blues.” — NO DEPRESSION

SUMMARY:Sounds of Blackness' "Music for Martin" at the Ordway
DESCRIPTION:Three-time Grammy-winning ensemble presents an original tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\nMusic for Martin brings the Grammy Award–winning Sounds of Blackness back to the Ordway with one of their most powerful and enduring original works. First premiering on our stage in January 1988\, this production was created\, arranged\, and produced by Gary Hines\, Music Director of Sounds of Blackness\, specifically for a performance at the Ordway. It weaves together music\, narration\, and visual elements to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. \nDrawing from the music that fueled the Civil Rights Movement\, Music for Martin features stylized arrangements rooted in gospel\, spirituals\, soul\, and jazz\, paired with excerpts from Dr. King’s most iconic speeches. The result is both a historical reflection and a living\, breathing call to hope\, unity\, love\, and peace. \nFor over five decades\, Sounds of Blackness has shared these messages on five continents\, performing for everyone from community audiences to world leaders\, including kings\, queens\, presidents\, and ambassadors. As the ensemble celebrates its 55th anniversary\, Music for Martin stands as a testament to their artistic excellence\, cultural impact\, and deep connection to both the Ordway and the Twin Cities community.

SUMMARY:Marc Ribot: Hurry Red Telephone at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Marc Ribot\, guitar\nSebastian Steinberg\, bass (Soul Coughing)\nChad Taylor\, drums\nBriggan Krauss\, saxophone (Sexmob) \nMarc Ribot was never suited to play straight jazz. Ribot realized that in his 20s while trying to bop with veteran organist Jack McDuff. But Ribot soon found his calling—and the core of his mission\, really—both in the city’s melting pot and in its no-holds-barred No Wave scene. There\, he threw out the rules he was trying to ace and joined the Lounge Lizards. Then\, he accepted Tom Waits’ invitation to play on Rain Dogs. Ribot stopped trying to sound like the guitarist he was supposed to be and became\, instead\, the guitar player he was.  \nFor over four decades\, he has been an indispensable collaborator to the likes of Waits\, Robert Plant\, and John Zorn. Additionally\, so many others that his list of credits reads like a library’s card catalog. But Ribot has also been a great bandleader\, from his renegade bunch Ceramic Dog to his committed Latin band\, Los Cubanos Postizos.  \nTwenty years ago\, Ribot convened a glorious quartet\, Spiritual Unity\, to tackle the songbook of Albert Ayler. Then\, Roy Campbell died and Henry Grimes had to step away for health concerns. However\, Ribot and drummer Chad Taylor wanted to maintain the exploratory energy of that band with a new lineup. Ribot called on Sebastian Steinberg\, a collaborator and confidant since the ‘80s and an anchor of his great Shrek.  \nThe new group is Hurry Red Telephone. During the quartet’s 2025 tours\, guitarist Ava Mendoza added the combustible extra ingredient. Here\, her chemistry with Ribot seemed to push each of them to play a bit harder\, meaner\, wilder. For 2026\, saxophonist Briggan Krauss will step into that role with Hurry Red Telephone. Thus begins yet another chapter in Ribot’s ever-unfolding quest to find new ways to play.

SUMMARY:Joe Westerlund & Trever Hagen at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:A duo ensemble born from a childhood friendship in the Midwest\, Joe Westerlund (Megafaun\, DeYarmond Edison) and Trever Hagen (Bon Iver) have merged their solo work on drums and trumpet into a distinct sound world of melodic\, rhythmic\, and lush electroacoustic texture. The pair pays respect to this instrumentation’s historical context\, while reaching further into sonic geographies with their shared voice. Their forthcoming debut release on Totally Gross National Product consists of four compositions born and molded from sprawling improvisations during a winter tour in late 2024. \n⊹ \nJoe Westerlund has emerged as an intuitive improviser and composer during the last decade\, scoring deep meditative practice over the course of three full-length solo records. Westerlund—a longtime student of Milford Graves—has now spent more than a quarter-century gleaning lessons from folk musicians and avant-garde icons\, from close friends and challenging strangers alike. He served as the dynamic backbone of Megafaun\, the North Carolina trio of sophisticated songwriting and winning charisma that he cofounded. As a session drummer\, he has worked as the pulse beneath the plaintive Americana of Watchhouse\, Daughter of Swords\, and Jake Xerxes Fussell and been a textural anchor for the folk abstraction of Califone and Bon Iver. Currently\, he tours and records primarily in an improvisational trio\, Setting (with Jaime Fennelly and Nathan Bowles)\, and as a solo artist on Psychic Hotline. \nTrever Hagen is an trumpet player and producer who has collaborated with a range of musicians and ensembles (Bon Iver\, Mouse on Mars\, Marijuana Deathsquads\, CARM\, Aero Flynn) and is one-third of the electronica pop trio Heavy MakeUp\, which also features Edie Brickell and CJ Camerieri. Hagen’s solo trumpet electronica albums have been released by the labels 37d03d\, Audiotong\, Music of New Reference\, and No Icon.

SUMMARY:Mary Louise Knutson\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein at the Hat!
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis-based pianist and composer\, Mary Louise Knutson\, has been called “one of the most exciting and innovative artists to happen to jazz piano in quite some time.” Her warm\, inviting tone\, broad range of emotional expression\, and distinctive compositions have brought her much recognition on the national music scene. Knutson’s long-awaited new jazz trio CD\, In the Bubble\, ranked in JazzWeek’s Top 10 and remained on the chart for 19 weeks straight. Six standards and four originals – which range from a swinging Oscar Peterson Trio-style “It Could Happen to You” to a smooth jazz version of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” to a Keith Jarrett style “You Are My Sunshine” – complete this highly accessible mainstream-to-modern collection. Knutson tours regularly with her group\, the Mary Louise Knutson Trio\, whose music has been described by JazzTimes as “state-of-the-art piano trio finery\,” and by the Star Tribune (Mpls\, St. Paul) as “timeless\, classic piano trio music\, right up there with Bill Evans and Bill Charlap.” And from 2010-2018\, Knutson toured with trumpeter Doc Severinsen\, former bandleader for the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. \nKnutson has also performed with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie\, Kurt Elling\, Bobby McFerrin\, Dianne Reeves\, Kevin Mahogany\, Randy Brecker\, Bobby Shew\, Nicholas Payton\, Terell Stafford\, Terence Blanchard\, Richie Cole\, Ernie Watts\, Greg Abate\, Von Freeman\, Slide Hampton\, Mike Stern\, Peter Erskine\, Billy Hart\, Ed Shaughnessy\, Richard Davis\, and more.\nAs a show player\, she has performed with such artists as Reba McEntire\, Michael Bolton\, Jordin Sparks\, Trisha Yearwood\, Ivan Neville\, Sam Moore\, Donny Osmond\, Smokey Robinson\, the Osmond Brothers\, and comedians Phyllis Diller\, Jack Carter\, Rob Schneider\, Kevin Nealon\, Judy Tenuta\, and more. In 2006 Knutson was a Minnesota Music Awards nominee for both Jazz Artist of the Year and Pianist of the Year\, and in 2005\, she was a Finalist in the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams “Women in Jazz” International Pianist Competition. In 2004\, Knutson was the recipient of Lawrence University’s distinguished Nathan M. Pusey Alumni Achievement Award for significant contributions and achievements in a career field. And in 2001\, Knutson’s debut jazz trio CD\, Call Me When You Get There\, charted in JazzWeek’s Top 50 for eight consecutive weeks\, and earned Knutson the award for Top New Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year from KWJL Radio in California. Featured tracks include her award-winning compositions and signature arrangements of such jazz classics as “Tangerine\,” “Green Dolphin Street\,” and “Gone With the Wind\,” and range from the joyful lyricism of “Call Me When You Get There” to the impassioned blaze of “Meridian.”

SUMMARY:New Nostalgia at Crooners Supper Club
DESCRIPTION:Fusion Horn Band\nNew Nostalgia is a Chicago-based instrumental ensemble band formed in 2017. Led by saxophonist and award-winning composer/arranger Neil Carson\, this 9-piece “fusion horn band” blends the sophistication of jazz\, the accessibility of pop\, and the raw intensity of rock into a genre-defying experience. Known for their intricate-yet-catchy arrangements and virtuosic ensemble playing\, New Nostalgia delivers a compelling mix of original compositions and reimagined covers that captivate both seasoned listeners and new audiences alike. \nTheir 2019 self-titled debut featured genre-bending arrangements of iconic 1980s pop tunes\, while their pandemic-era remote EP Frankenstein Sessions showcased a harder rock edge. With their second studio album releasing in December 2025 and a midwest tour on the horizon for early 2026\, New Nostalgia continues to push boundaries––intellectually rigorous\, emotionally resonant\, and always electrifying.

SUMMARY:Kandace Springs at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Pianist and singer Kandace Springs is one of the premier female artists of the jazz/soul genre. Her natural gifts for lyricism and soulfulness have earned her recognition worldwide. Further\, her late mentor Prince described her as having “a voice that could melt snow”.  \nThe Nashville native has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. Here\, she has made several national TV appearances\, and headlines major jazz festivals. Moreover\, she has collaborated with such luminaries as Christian McBride\, Roy Hargrove\, David Sanborn and Norah Jones. The Washington Post exclaims\, “Kandace Springs’s voice is undeniable. It’s one of those generational voices; from the first note\, you know it’s special.”  \nShe embodies the same spirit and soul of the great vocalists of the past on whose shoulders she stands. She simultaneously draws on jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae and multi-genre masters like Nina Simone and Roberta Flack. To that end\, Springs recently released an orchestral reimagining of Billie Holiday’s Lady in Satin. Kandace looks forward to releasing a new album in Spring 2026 and hitting the road backed by her ace all-female rhythm section.  \nKandace’s 2024 release\, Run Your Race\, was a tribute to her late father\, legendary Nashville soul singer Scat Springs. Here\, it is the first album of hers to feature almost all original songs. Every song was written by Kandace both solo and with some stellar collaborators. Prior to that in 2020\, Kandace released The Women Who Raised Me. There\, the album garnered five-star reviews from DownBeat and The New Yorker. Additionally\, it won the Deutscher JazzPreis for best vocal album of the year.

SUMMARY:Dance Your Brass Off ⏤ Mardi Gras Celebration ft. Brass Messengers\, McNasty Brass Band\, and BrassZilla at Turf Club
DESCRIPTION:This show is taking place in both the Turf Club and Clown Lounge. Be sure to check out the Mardi Gras celebrations and bands playing on BOTH stages! And sponsored by Jazz88! \nThe Brass Messengers are a Minneapolis street band playing mostly original music inspired by global sources. The BMs formed from the annual rubble of the Heart of the Beast Mayday Parade and Ceremony in Minneapolis.  The musical origins were found in the music of Africa\, the Carribean and Balkans\, but now the BMs play whatever works\, throwing in a country song to the crying drinkers\, a high speed polka or two for the midwest dancers\, running in circles with the little ones\, activating gatherings of our activist kin or a bit of Black Sabbath for the metal crowd. But mostly\, it is original music that rises from the heart of the band that can only be described as a homegrown Minneapolis street music sound. \nBased in the Twin Cities\, MN\, McNasty Brass Band brings the Minneapolis sound to new territory by combining the spirit of New Orleans with elements of Prince\, old school funk\, and a splash of R&B. Since their debut EP release Southside Fridays in early 2015\, the McNasty Brass Band has been continuously writing music to push the limit of what a fully acoustic dance band can do. It’s their raw\, organic brass sound that makes the music so infectious. A reckless\, ten-piece megazord of horns and drums\, McNasty Brass Band can blow the walls off a house party\, march down the streets of a parade\, or own the stage with the confidence of a well-oiled groove machine. \nWhether it’s happening in a theater\, in a roadhouse\, or by the side of the road\, BrassZilla will deliver its hip-shakin’ beer jazz. Something that’s a little chilly and a little hot and makes the head start to move with a certain kind of groove. Something that everyone needs. BrassZilla was founded in 2011 as a way for three horn players to explore their love of jazz\, funk\, blues\, and other genres while touring with the Minneapolis rock band Chooglin’. That exploration led to the addition of drummer Andy Deckard and produced original compositions that defy typical notions of genre or style.

SUMMARY:ARKANSAUCE and CHICKEN WIRE EMPIRE at Cedar Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:The Cedar Presents\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nARKANSAUCE and CHICKEN WIRE EMPIRE\nSunday\, February 15\, 2026/ Doors: 7:00 PM / Show: 7:30 PM \nAll Ages \nStanding \n$22 Advance\, $25 Day of Show \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THIS SHOW\nBluegrass & Red Hearts. Celebrate (the day after) Valentine’s with two powerhouses of bluegrass: Arkansauce and Chicken Wire Empire. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nARKANSAUCE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkansauce calls forth melodies of the Ozark Mountains’ rolling hills and raging rivers with their distinct blend of newgrass. This progressive string quartet features Tom Andersen on bass\, guitarist Zac Archuleta\, Ethan Bush on mandolin\, and Adams Collins on banjo. Their music features improvisational string leads matched with complex melodies\, intriguing rhythms\, and deep thumping bass grooves. Each member sings lead and harmony parts as well as contributes to the lyrics\, which offer authentic\, intelligent songwriting with hard-hitting hooks. \n\n\n\nCHICKEN WIRE EMPIRE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChicken Wire Empire is a Wisconsin-based bluegrass band known for their dynamic musicality\, thorough arrangements\, and true-to-life songwriting. The band emerged in 2016 with their debut self-titled album and have since released a prolific catalogue of studio projects and live performances. Their sixth and latest album\, Growing Pains\, releases June 1 and is a veritable culmination of the band’s growth through the past decade. \nCWE continuously captivates audiences with thoughtful\, energetic performances. Their high-level musicality turns up a fresh conversation with each show\, like a brainstorm of creative musical substance. Americana Highways writes “These musicians must enjoy what they do because their joy translates through their instruments. The energy\, fingering techniques are all proponents that deliver substance with a modicum of joy. There aren’t any low points\, missteps\, loss of heat in any of these melodies.” \nThe band has been recognized worldwide for their performances and recorded works\, with Americana UK calling their latest album “a variety which transcends genre and rewards careful listening.” Capturing the ever-evolving sights and sounds of the road through the lens of their Midwestern roots\, the band’s catalog of songs is ever-growing and CWE continues to be acknowledged for their pensive attention to detail in writing and crafting deeply engaging songs. \nChicken Wire Empire has partnered with dozens of artists from all corners of the bluegrass genre\, from Sam Bush and Peter Rowan to Vince Herman and Keller Williams. Their forthcoming album features guest appearances from Grammy-winning artists Jerry Douglas and Kyle Tuttle. The long list of collaborators has lent a lifetime of taste and knowledge to CWE’s musical journey while the band has grown into its identifiably authentic yet original sound.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day/ Mike Lewis & Barbara Jean at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:This Valentine’s Day\, sweethearts Mike Lewis (Happy Apple) and Barbara Jean (Dusty Heart) will perform tender tunes on guitar\, saxophone\, banjo\, fiddle\, and voice. Seated tickets include a selection of savory and sweet snacks; additional a la carte dinner & beverage menus will be available. \n⊹ \nMike Lewis is regarded throughout the Twin Cities and well beyond as one of the most creative sax players in modern music\, lending his blowing and bowing skills to a number of highly regarded ensembles\, including Bon Iver\, Happy Apple\, Andrew Bird\, and Gayngs. \nBarbara Jean grew up immersed in a world of music and sound\, honing her early gift for the violin\, and a musical legacy passed from grandmother to mother to daughter\, into a sharp eye for songwriting and a skilled hand as a multi-instrumentalist. Calling the rugged grandeur of Lake Superior’s North Shore home for the last several years\, she has developed her craft through constant live performance and has struck out on her own to take her debut record\, The Great Escape\, to fans all across the Midwest. Classically trained on the viola at the University of Minnesota\, and self-taught at the banjo\, her voice and songs transcend tradition with a mix of Americana\, Appalachia\, and an insightful vulnerability in lyric and delivery.
