SUMMARY:Pat Keen & Mike Munson; John Saint Pelvyn; Mother Shipton
DESCRIPTION:Come out January 4 to the brand new\, yet to be named\, gallery in the Ivy Building (2637 27th Avenue S.\, Minneapolis). The space is amazing\, the music will be warm and Soop Lights Show will be providing beautiful visuals.\nPat Keen/Mike Munson are two incredibly improvisers and all-around musicians who teamed up earlier this year on their release “Pneuma\,” a single-extended improvisation.\nJohn Saint Pelvyn\, the enigmatic Minneapolis legend. Singular\, as he is primal.\nMother Shipton (Matt Beachey/ Mark Verdin) autumnal chamber duo\, rocking between tightly composed fugue-like altered folk and emergent improvisations that slowly unravel.\nJoin us as the New Year starts\, as we transcend time\, space and seasonal depression in a night of musical warmth!

SUMMARY:Prudence Johnson & the Halcyon Jazz Quartet at Crooners
DESCRIPTION:Jazz with an Understated Vibe\nVersatility can be rewarding but some music just feels like home. Vocalist Prudence Johnson returns to her jazz roots with the Halcyon Jazz Quartet\, following their sparkling debut at Crooners last spring. With an “off the beaten path” approach to repertoire and featuring the amazing Dave Hagedorn on vibes\, and top-shelf rhythm section Joe Pulice and Kevin Clements\, Halcyon takes the “less is more” approach and reaches for the emotional and musical depths of a song with a controlled intensity. \nPrudence Johnson: Voice \nDave Hagedorn: Vibraphone \nJoe Pulice: Drums \nGary Raynor: Acoustic Bass \nPrudence Johnson is well known to Crooners audiences\, appearing with Lush Country\, with Rio Nido\, in duos with Dan Chouinard\, Tim Sparks or Dean Magraw\, in shows featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein and Randy Newman\, singing in French and Italian\, or with Latin-jazz sensation Yazmin. But her reputation as a jazz singer lives on\, and\, in a new venture\, she joins forces with three of the region’s finest instrumentalists to form the Halcyon Jazz Quartet.

SUMMARY:Tim Sparks\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein at the Lex!
DESCRIPTION:Tim Sparks has been redefining the acoustic guitar repertoire since he won the National Fingerpicking Championship in 1993 with a ground breaking arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Sparks continues to surprise\, challenge\, and thrill audiences with his diverse repertoire and stunning technique. Equally at home with Country Blues\, Jazz or World Music\, Sparks’ extraordinary ability has earned him an international reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists working today.\nTrained by Segovia protege Jesus Silva at the North Carolina School of the Arts\, Sparks has continued to study classical music throughout his career. His adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite has been cited as a significant contribution to solo guitar literature. For Sparks it was a labor of love that earned him the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in Winfield\, Kansas in 1993\nHis wide travels inspired his interest in European and Mediterranean styles\, particularly the music of the Balkans. Upon his return to Minnesota\, Sparks immersed himself in the ethnic music scene\, performing on Oud and Saz in Middle Eastern ensembles and playing guitar in Greek\, Klezmer\, and Sephardic groups. This work culminated in the recording of Sparks’ Balkan Dreams Suite\, a remarkable collection of odd-meter guitar arrangements. \nSparks’ work came to the attention of John Zorn\, the saxophonist\, composer\, and curator of Tzadik Records in New York and thereby led to a new cycle of compositions inspired by traditional Jewish melodies. Neshamah (1999) is a solo effort; Tanz\, (2000) which garnered Downbeat Magazine’s highest praise\, five stars; and At the Rebbe’s Table (2002). In 2003 Tzadik released Masada Guitars\, featuring interpretations of John Zorn’s music by Tim\, Bill Frisell\, and Marc Ribot. \nIn recent years\, Sparks’ musical focus has come full circle\, returning to the country blues and classic jazz that served as a springboard for his worldwide guitar explorations. He toured with Dolly Parton in 2005 and recorded Roots\, Rags and Blues for Truefire Acoustic Guitar Workshop.\nSparks released Sidewalk Blues on the ToneWood label in February 2009 and recorded Little Princess\, his fifth CD for Tzadik\, in New York in 2009. Post-Modern Fingerstyle Guitar was released on Truefire in 2011.\nSparks released Chasin’ the Boogie\, his 10th acoustic guitar recording on May 30\, 2014 followed by Jukebox Dreamin’ in December 2018. \n

SUMMARY:Preener's Eve with The New Standards at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock. Here\, they blend the freedom of jazz with  the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nThe New Standards started in 2005 as an off-shoot project. Since then\, TNS has grown into a globe-spanning adventure\, filling theaters and clubs around the world. Additionally\, they have created several albums\, videos\, cartoons\, dance/theater projects\, and ancillary gewgaws that have charmed and delighted faithful fans. \nAll three are fans of great songwriting. However\, they sensed a lack of an interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards”. Thus\, they got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs from every era\, particularly post-1960s pop music. Familiar tunes in a stripped-down acoustic setting\, leaving room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz. Yet\, they never fully abandon the modest soul of pop and rock. \nAnother thing: though you may associate an acoustic tango version of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” with camp\, TNS is not a lounge or novelty act. One listen to their music reveals that they take their music-making as well as their jobs as entertainers seriously. \nAnd yet\, they are very funny.

SUMMARY:The Bad Plus at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:The Bad Plus are the ultimate originals. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For the past two decades\, they have played with spirit and adventure and have made their own rules. Moreover\, they do so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization\, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide. Further\, their unique sound and flair for live performance make them a must-see ensemble. \nNow in their twenty-fifth year\, The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries. Here\, founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band. Also\, Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone) join the group\, instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation. These new voices are re-energizing their sound and inspiration. The Bad Plus have constantly searched to bridge genres and techniques. Additionally\, they explore the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync. \nThe Bad Plus released their fifteenth studio album\, self-titled as a dynamic new quartet\, in 2022. Evolution is necessary for life and creativity\,” said Dave King and Reid Anderson. “We’ve evolved\, but we’re still The Bad Plus.” \nThis is The Bad Plus in their most creative and expressive form. This is The Bad Plus now.

SUMMARY:Preservation Hall Jazz Band Presents: A Creole Christmas at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the season as the incomparable Preservation Hall Jazz Band takes the stage with Creole Christmas. This memorable performance will feature New Orleans classics as well as beloved holiday selections with a twist. Founded in 1963\, the band takes its name from Preservation Hall\, the humble but historic French Quarter music venue. There\, Preservation Hall is dedicated to keeping the past and future of jazz alive. \nThroughout its history\, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge. Further\, they mingle\, resurface\, and are transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Here\, they have held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 60 years. Moreover\, they carry it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrant\, living history.  \nPHJB marches that tradition forward by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots. They look back to the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane. Then\, they look forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport. They have shared the stage with legends like Stevie Wonder\, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead. Also\, modern giants The Foo Fighters\, My Morning Jacket\, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.
