SUMMARY:Preservation Hall Jazz Band Presents: A Creole Christmas at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the season as the incomparable Preservation Hall Jazz Band takes the stage with Creole Christmas. This memorable performance will feature New Orleans classics as well as beloved holiday selections with a twist. Founded in 1963\, the band takes its name from Preservation Hall\, the humble but historic French Quarter music venue. There\, Preservation Hall is dedicated to keeping the past and future of jazz alive. \nThroughout its history\, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge. Further\, they mingle\, resurface\, and are transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Here\, they have held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 60 years. Moreover\, they carry it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrant\, living history.  \nPHJB marches that tradition forward by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots. They look back to the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane. Then\, they look forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport. They have shared the stage with legends like Stevie Wonder\, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead. Also\, modern giants The Foo Fighters\, My Morning Jacket\, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.

SUMMARY:Brandon Wozniak\, Phil Aaron\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein
DESCRIPTION:To appreciate the cool vibe jazz saxophonist Brandon Wozniak brings to a set\, it pays to watch him stride to the bandstand. \nWith a tall and imposing presence\, Wozniak evokes the image of the great horn players in whose steps he follows. Among them would certainly be Dexter Gordon\, the silky smooth master whose photo hangs to the left of the stage at St. Paul’s Artists’ Quarter\, where the saxophonist performs Saturday with bassist Adam Linz and drummer Eric Kamau Gravatt. \nWozniak plays with a number of Twin Cities jazz ensembles\, among them Monk in Motion\, the Adam Meckler Quintet\, the Bryan Nichols Quintet\, Dave King Trucking Company and the Atlantis Quartet. \nBesides excellent technique\, the saxophonist brings stirring emotion to the groups and a flowing style. Although he often plays a supportive role to the soloists\, he is an improvisational leader among leaders. \n“My role is usually to play the melody line and to try to tell a story through improvisation\,” Wozniak said. “It’s not always about that\, but I do play the saxophone so it kind of comes with the territory. The people I play with regularly know I’m going try to create and play something original every time I step on stage and they know I’m going to listen to every note and beat they play.” \nAdding his voice to a group while retaining individuality comes easily to Wozniak. A Green Bay\, Wis.\, native who grew up in Colorado and Indiana\, he studied at Indiana University\, which has a rigorous jazz studies program led by master educator David Baker. Heavily based on bebop patterns and scales\, it stressed jazz fundamentals: how to play tunes and navigate chord changes. \nThough he thinks it might have made more sense to skip college and follow Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman around for a few years\, Wozniak credits his saxophone professor Tom Walsh with letting him know there are no shortcuts. \n“Everyone has their own path\,” he said. “As long as you continue the search you’ll get to where you’re supposed to be eventually.” \nWozniak’s path led him to New York City and the Tom Dorsey band\, where he learned from journeyman musicians. Six years ago\, he returned to the Twin Cities\, where his parents live. \nSince then\, he’s done some of his most innovative work for the Atlantis Quartet\, which also includes bassist Chris Bates\, drummer Pete Hennig and guitarist Zacc Harris. \nWozniak didn’t know what to expect when he arrived\, but was pleased to find a solid core of musicians intent on improving their craft\, and keeping jazz alive. \n“There are a lot of creative people here\,” he said. “I don’t think I would have stuck around if this wasn’t the case. I knew about Happy Apple but that was about it. I need to be around people who are trying to create and grow as improvisers and would be miserable otherwise. \n“Fortunately for me\, there are a lot of talented artists of all kinds in Minnesota and I can honestly say I no longer miss New York City. I do miss my friends and the music there sometimes but I actually play there more now than I did when I lived there and I get a chance to see people when I’m out there.” \nWozniak has been in the recording studio of late\, for Harris’ recently released album The Garden and for an upcoming record by Chris Bates. He’s also writing his own tunes and hopes to deliver a recording next year. \nMeanwhile\, he’s continually playing\, not worried about who receives top billing. \n“I plan on leading more in the future but even if a project is under someone’s name\, we all collaborate and trade ideas so much that it all feels like one big creative collective most of the time\,” Wozniak said. “I’m not interested in putting out a record just so people can see my name and say he’s finally a leader as if that’s the final hump to me becoming a great player. \n“We all lead in different ways\, I try to do it through my playing and I think that’s what’s earned me the most amount of respect among my peers. I may not always say it with words but I don’t think there’s much doubt about what’s going to happen once we start playing. At this point I just want to continue doing what I’ve been doing\, trying to play the music that’s in my head.”

SUMMARY:Matt Wilson's Christmas Tree-O at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Drummer Matt Wilson brings his delightful Christmas Tree-O to Berlin. Their annual sold-out engagements at the Jazz Standard (now held at Dizzy’s) have become a New York City holiday tradition. The band has featured a range of music legends as guests\, including Bill Frisell\, Jason Moran\, Joe Lovano\, Kurt Elling\, Aaron Diehl\, Christian McBride\, Marshall Allen\, Esperanza Spaulding\, Nels Cline\, Camilla Meza\, and Cecile McLorin Salvant. \nBand Members:\nMatt Wilson – Drums\nJeff Lederer – Reeds\nPaul Sikivie – Bass \n⊹ \nDan Aldag: \n\nThere’s a certain madcap energy propelling this holiday-themed group. Its repertoire includes cartoon classics like the Chipmunk Song and “You’re a Mean One\, Mr. Grinch\,” and comedian Amy Schumer once joined the trio in a walk-on guest spot. But as Rahsaan Roland Kirk used to admonish audiences about his own top-hatted multi-instrumental pyrotechnics: “This ain’t no sideshow.” Wilson can be daffy but he’s also dead-earnest\, and he treats all his material\, from the avant-garde Albert Ayler to Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus\,” with reverence. (Among dozens of others who have sat in with the Tree-O over the years are contemporary jazz giants like Bill Frisell\, Jason Moran\, Esperanza Spalding\, and longtime Sun Ra Arkestra leader Marshall Allen.) \nWilson belongs to a lineage of Clown Princes of Jazz—Louis Armstrong\, Fats Waller\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Clark Terry\, Han Bennink—players who find extraordinary joy in jazz and in life\, and who transmit that joy to audiences every time they play. Like those icons\, Wilson is a funny guy who is first and foremost a very serious musician. Jazz writer Nate Chinen opines that there is “almost nobody in Wilson’s peer group with a broader sense of jazz history\, or a more natural sense of time\, or a stronger signature as a bandleader\, or more goodwill among his fellow players.” A gifted composer\, bandleader\, producer and educator\, he’s famous for his flair and virtuosity as a drummer and for his good vibes as a bandleader (“an ambassador of good feeling\, the New York Times once called him)\, not to mention his facility for collaborating with top musicians across the spectrum of jazz\, from the mainstream to the way-out and virtually everything in between. \nYou won’t meet a more magnanimous soul in the jazz cosmos (maybe not in any cosmos) and—no disrespect to our other guests—you’ll look far and wide to find a more prolific player\, too. Wilson has appeared on more than 550 recordings\, including several with Charlie Haden and Carla Bley’s legendary Liberation Music Orchestra\, and he’s released 18 as a leader (and nearly as many as a co-leader). A relentless touring performer\, he’s a constant presence at premiere nightclubs and festivals around the globe. And in addition to his myriad performances\, education initiatives and broadcast projects\, Wilson has topped the DownBeat and NPR Readers and Critics Polls\, torn up tons of Top 10 lists\, graced the covers of every jazz and drum magazine you could name\, and won honors for both Drummer of the Year (twice!) and Musician of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association. \nBandmates Jeff Lederer (reeds) and Paul Sikivie (bass) also get around: in addition to leading his own ensembles\, Lederer is a regular in the Matt Wilson Quartet and in bands led by Bobby Sanabria and salsa trombonist Jimmy Bosch\, while Sikivie has held the bass chair in several notable groups\, most notably the trio backing vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant and now with Samara Joy.

SUMMARY:Merry Christmas from José James at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:With:\nJosé James – vocals\nJahari Stampley – piano\nKanoa Mendenhall – bass\nOtis Brown III – drums \n“Merry Christmas from José James” raises the bar for the contemporary Christmas show. James combines the classic jazz-crooner elegance of Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole with the earthy sophistication of soul legends Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. Further\, James breathes new life into much-loved holiday classics such as “The Christmas Song”\, “White Christmas” and “Let it Snow”. Moreover\, the show will feature new compositions by James and his partner Talia Billig. In addition to showcasing his crooner chops\, the 50 Shades Darker singer explores his jazz side. The show includes a joyful rendition of John Coltrane’s “My Favorite Things.” \nA jazz artist for the hip-hop generation\, James artfully blurs the lines between traditional and contemporary jazz\, hip-hop\, soul\, funk\, pop and rock. Also\, he has released eleven critically acclaimed albums in as many years. Further\, James is the recipient of both the Edison Award and L’Académie du Jazz Grand Prix. He has collaborated with many notable artists like Flying Lotus\, Robert Glasper\, Lalah Hathaway\, Ledisi\, Aloe Blacc and Jason Moran. \nJahari Stampley is a Chicago-born pianist who began playing the piano at the age of fourteen. Within two years of exploring the instrument\, he began winning various competitions. Then\, by the age of eighteen\, he became recognized and followed by many world-renowned musicians. These include Yebba Smith\, Jill Scott\, Robert Glasper\, Cory Henry\, Jacob Collier\, Stanley Clarke\, and Derrick Hodge\, among others. Additionally\, Jahari has toured with Stanley Clarke and is featured on Derrick Hodge’s Color of Noise album.

SUMMARY:Southside Aces: A Night in New Orleans at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, Southside Aces have been playing the repertoire of the Jazz Age greats and beyond. Here\, they play the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton and the Chicago joys of Louis Armstrong. The evocative compositions of the young Duke Ellington to the barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall. Even the early rock and roll of Fats Domino! Their belief in the contemporary vitality of New Orleans music can be heard in their eighth album\, 2022’s Minneapolis Bump. Here\, this album contains fifteen originals in the traditional style. The Aces will release two more albums in 2026\, including Les Oignons\, featuring the music of Sidney Bechet. You hear it all when you’re in front of the Aces. Moreover\, treat yourself to a century’s worth of New Orleans jazz. \nIn New Orleans\, the jazz tradition thrives off a wide array of styles. Here\, the Aces possess a diverse repertoire\, with a roll call that includes jazz giants. For example\, Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Hoagy Carmichael\, Duke Ellington\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Additionally\, Crescent City classics like “Bourbon Street Parade”\, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”\, and “St. James Infirmary”. Also\, they cover the funky rhythms of brass band powerhouses like “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Palm Court Strut”! \n“Some 1500 miles from New Orleans and the Mardi Gras\, and what do you think? It’s bouncing around the Mississippi River up here close to the Northern Star.” — Leigh Kamman\, The Jazz Image \n“The performers are virtuosi and flawlessly replicate the sound of classic New Orleans… The concert was wonderful and demonstrates the continued vitality of this sort of music.” — John Beckmann\, Prairie Uprising

SUMMARY:Dale Alexander\, Calvin Caron\, Jay Epstein at Waterbury Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:At the age of 24\, Dale Alexander had a rich and varied musical background than many musicians achieve in a lifetime. Studying with prominent musicians such as Marvin Dahlgren and Dr. Reginald Buckner of the University School of Music served to enhance Dale’s unlimited natural musical talent. He was recognized by the University of Wisconsin with a National Jazz Education Award for his outstanding individual performance as a percussionist. By the time he graduated from high school\, he had already performed with the nationally known soul group\, the Temptations. \nIn the ensuing years\, Dale has appeared with virtually every well-known jazz artist in the States. After conquering the drums\, he turned his sights toward the piano studying with Manfredo Fest. \nDale worked as one of the Musical Directors for the Christmas performance from “American Idol on Tour” and is available for national and international engagements. He is also available for both piano and drum lessons in his studio in Chatsworth\, California. \nIn the early 90s\, he was Musical Director for Andiamo’s\, a world class jazz club in Aspen and stayed there until he moved to the Los Angeles area. Dale has performed and recorded with many musical legends like George Benson – Everett Harp – Larry Graham – Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison – Frank Morgan – Billy Eckstine – John Heard Herb Ellis – Phil Upchurch – Eric Burdon (War)- Buddy Miles (Jimmy Hendrix) – Edgar Winter Jimmy Smith – Diane Reeves – Barbara Morrison – Glen Frey – Jimmy Buffet – Billy Taylor – The Temptations – Sheila E – Prince – Andre Cymone – Slash (Guns & Roses) – Jimmy Jam – Terri Lewis – Glen Frey (Eagles) – Robbie Kreiger (The Doors) – Marilyn Manson – John Denver – Motown recording legend Wa Wah Watson.

SUMMARY:New Year's Eve with Davina and the Vagabonds at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Dinner Show — $185Includes a four-course dinner\, show admission\, tax\, and gratuity. \nCocktail Show — $115Includes a $20 food/drink voucher\, a champagne toast at midnight\, tax\, and gratuity. \nDavina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene. Their high-energy live shows feature level-A musicianship\, sharp-dressed professionalism and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. Also\, their influences range from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits. Moreover\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA. She now describes the town as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” Then\, she was adopted by her stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard the music that would start her journey. For example\, The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong\, Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says. \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player at home. There\, she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom. \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school. Further\, this morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band and worked [her] ass off every day since.”
