SUMMARY:New Year's Eve with Davina and the Vagabonds at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Dinner Show — $185Includes a four-course dinner\, show admission\, tax\, and gratuity. \nCocktail Show — $115Includes a $20 food/drink voucher\, a champagne toast at midnight\, tax\, and gratuity. \nDavina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene. Their high-energy live shows feature level-A musicianship\, sharp-dressed professionalism and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. Also\, their influences range from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits. Moreover\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA. She now describes the town as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” Then\, she was adopted by her stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard the music that would start her journey. For example\, The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong\, Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says. \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player at home. There\, she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom. \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school. Further\, this morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band and worked [her] ass off every day since.”

SUMMARY:Liz Draper Album Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Come Celebrate Liz’s album release and new space next to the puppet build on the south side of the Ivy!!\nEarly evening album release party. Music by Liz Draper//Chris Hepola//Crystal Myslajek & Anna Johnson from Chicago!\nFood by Paul Perez of Unidos Food Co\nDebut Vinyl Album “Meno” by upright bassist Liz Draper\nDark\, murky\, heartbreaking\, and deep Liz Draper’s debut release “Meno” fits squarely in the genre of classicaldoomfolkjazz. Draper has toured the world and recorded with bands ranging from Low\, to Charlie Parr\, to the Grammy-winning Okee-Dokee Brothers. She currently tours with legendary songwriter Iris DeMent. She set up a microphone in her hallway in late 2024 because she and her instrument had something of their own to say.\nCalling on a team of skilled women to move the recording to a dreamsicle pink colored 10” vinyl LP\, Draper\, makes a statement in sound\, action\, and process. Enlisting the renowned guitarist Ava Mendoza to master the album\, Marie Stier to create the art\, Sara Pette from Outta Wax to press the record\, and Liatris Records to help guide the whole process\, “Meno” was women-forward from inception to release.\nThe opening track “Prayers For Mim in the Color Marigold” sets the tone for the album with accordion\, upright bass and haunting hums blending to take the listener to a serene sanctuary. An homage to the late Mimi Parker of the band Low\, Draper honors her friend and bandmate by transforming love laden grief into notes that seem to come from the earth itself. Draper states “music has always been the way I process change\, sit with a feeling\, how I build an altar for memories in the midst of loss and inner chaos.”\nAt the onset of perimenopause\, Draper is finally ready to take center stage. The album’s four movements provide a window into Draper’s soul\, giving voice to a changing body in a changing world. Draper and her bass step outside the boundaries of genre to speak in the language that suits them best\, a language you will hunger to learn.\n“Meno” now available on Liatris Records.

SUMMARY:poem|music performs Franz Schubert's Winterreise: Lonely Songs for Lonely Times.
DESCRIPTION:Local award-winning art song duo poem|music will perform Winterreise (Poem: Wilhelm Müller / Music: Franz Schubert) at Wells Pianos (St. Paul) on Sunday\, December 12th (3:30pm). Hang with the artists to follow the performance. Tickets are pay-as-able $0-$50\, only 40 available! RSVP at justin@barispen.com; walkups welcome. \nWritten in 1828\, Winterreise is a 70-minute song cycle that mines the depths of human suffering. The poems center on a solitary Wanderer roaming through deep winter\, devastated after being deemed too poor for his betrothed. What follows is an unraveling journey through isolation and grief; a meditation on the suffering which attachment brings. As the Wanderer’s world narrows\, we contemplate our own loneliness and need for belonging. \npoem|music (Justin Spenner\, Baritone / Carson Rose Schneider\, Piano) has been noted for their “tangible\, equal\, and beautiful\, collaborative energy” (Life in Revue). Their programs excavate and extrapolate both historic and contemporary art music/poetry for our current age of anxiety\, prominently featuring composers overlooked by academia and traditional producers. December’s performance marks the poem|music’s 5th – and Spenner’s 14th- exploration of Winterreise\, marking them among the most experienced interpreters of this sprawling song cycle. \nIf you think the world is terrifying and lonely and need to feel a place in it\, poem|music invites you to gather with others who feel the same way. Winterreise provides the opportunity to reconnect with community\, dump your pain into music\, and to rest. Song will change the world\, and we’re here for it. See you at the show! \nOverview\nWhat: Die Winterreise (Poem: Wilhelm Müller / Music: Franz Schubert)\nWho: Poem|Music (Justin Spenner\, Baritone / Carson Rose Schneider\, Piano)\nWhere: Wells Pianos (408 Snelling Ave S\, St Paul)\nWhen: 3:30pm on Sunday\, December 14th; hang to follow\nTickets: $0-$50+\, Pay-As-Able. Tarik digs deep into funk\, soul\, and rare grooves to create timeless sets. \nTarik Thornton is a New Orleans native who resides in South Minneapolis. He is the mind behind the beloved\, genre-defying mix show Quiet Village\, which airs on Saturdays at 5 p.m. on KRSM Radio\, where he has been a resident DJ/host for the past 8 years.  On stage\, he has shared bills with artists such as Durand Jones and Bun B\, always bringing a purposeful\, feel-first approach to the decks that resonates with his listeners. In 2015\, Tarik and DJ Skizz co-founded *Different Worlds Music Group*\, a label that’s become a trusted home for raw\, boundary-pushing hip-hop production by the likes of Crimeapple\, Roc Marciano\, Westside Gunn\, and the late Sean Price. SUMMARY:Trench Size Trio
DESCRIPTION:A funky instrumental trio consisting of three of the Twin Cities’ most seasoned musicians (we’re talking fresh herbs—none of the stale\, dried-out store-bought stuff)\, Trench Size Trio have been developing a sound and a body of work for close to a decade\, and they are not showing any signs of slowing down. Guitarist/songwriter Tom Reichert is the founder and has been playing with drummer Joey Van Phillips for over two decades. Bassist Jim Anton\, a longtime touring musician for the stars\, has more recently settled down in the Twin Cities and has become a household name to musicians and listeners alike. Together\, the three have developed a very unique sound\, leaning towards a backbeat–heavy sound with a jazz sense of improvisation. Their melodies are catchy and quirky at the same time.

SUMMARY:Karrin Allyson at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Few American jazz singers have had as long and fruitful a relationship with Brazilian music as Karrin Allyson. Her early albums included such classics as “Corcovado” and “One Note Samba”. Then\, her 1999 recording From Paris to Rio split the difference between songs from those musical cities. 2008’s Imagina: Songs of Brazil raised the ante on Rio. Now\, here’s another all-Brazilian outing\, 2024’s A Kiss for Brazil\, featuring the great Bahian singer-guitarist Rosa Passos on two songs.  \nWhat’s remarkable about Allyson’s ongoing foray into these sounds is she has never recorded the same song twice. The song list for A Kiss for Brazil includes Luiz Bonfá’s “Manhã de Carnaval” and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave”. However\, you may wonder why it has taken her so long to get to those oft-performed gems. The answer\, for starters\, is that there’s a bottomless pool of great Brazilian songs to record. Also\, Allyson has engaged in many other pursuits as one of jazz’s most popular and wide-ranging vocalists.  \nNominated for five Grammys\, she has explored bop and blues\, pop and Great American standards\, and written her own songs. Her highly regarded 2001 album Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane beautifully rendered the songs on Trane’s 1963 classic. Her 2004 album\, Wild for You\, is a collection of singer-songwriter pop tunes— “my first love”. Here\, Allyson performs songs by Joni Mitchell\, Cat Stevens\, Carole King\, and Carly Simon. On 2015’s Many a New Day\, she paid tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein alongsode pianist Kenny Barron.  \nMore recently\, she starred in the ambitious 2019 concept recording\, Shoulder to Shoulder: Centennial Tribute to Women’s Suffrage. This was a collection of Suffragist Era songs (plus two of hers).n

SUMMARY:Travis Anderson Trio's "A Charlie Brown Chritmas" at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:This blazingly energetic trio takes on Vince Guaraldi‘s holiday classic\, A Charlie Brown Christmas. Here\, they play the timeless music of Vince Guaraldi\, including “Christmas Time Is Here“ and “Linus and Lucy.” \nWith energy and chops to burn\, The Travis Anderson Trio bring fresh interpretations to standards and more – from Chopin to Mario Bros – they swing like there’s no tomorrow while saluting the great trios of yesterday. \nTravis Anderson has been delighting audiences with his dazzling piano technique and inventive arrangements since 2003. Additionally\, he has taken his unique piano style all over the metro area and beyond. \nSteve Pikal is one of the most in-demand bassists in the region. Adept at many genres\, his joyous stage presence and buoyant playing add an exciting element to every show. \nVersatile\, dynamic\, and hard-swinging\, Nathan Norman is a first-call drummer in the Twin Cities. Also\, he has collaborated with many of the area’s finest artists\, including Bruce Henry\, Debbie Duncan\, Charmin Michelle\, and more. \nA Charlie Brown Christmas is the Emmy and Peabody award-winning story written by St. Paul’s own Charles M. Schulz. This classic has warmed the hearts of millions of fans since it first aired on television nearly sixty years ago. The Christmas special marked the first time Schulz’s classic characters made the jump from the newspaper page to animation. Moreover\, the soundtrack being provided by a jazz trio rather than full orchestra\, originally a budget-conscious decision\, proved to be an inspired choice. Here\, Guaraldi’s songs are as important to the show’s enduring success as the characters themselves.
