SUMMARY:Velvet Revolutions: Sylvee & The Sea
DESCRIPTION:For the late-night finale of her Velvet Revolutions residency\, Pieta Brown explores experimental ambient music\, enlisting electric and slide guitars\, keyboards\, drums\, and cinematic live visuals. For fans of improvisational sonic visuality. \nBrown’s Sylvee & The Sea project was born when the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis commissioned her to curate and score 60 minutes of experimental films in 2022. Brown chose to highlight avant-garde films by women and performed her experimental score live with her band to great reception. Later that year\, Brown recorded and released an album of original cinematic instrumentals\, “The Less I Needed The Better I Felt”—featuring John Convertino (Calexico)\, Don Was\, and CJ Carmerieri (Carm)—under the moniker Sylvee & The Sea. Since that release\, Brown has continued to perform live with her shapeshifting band Sylvee & The Sea in various cinematic and experimental circumstances.

SUMMARY:Lila Ammons with Dale Alexander\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein
DESCRIPTION:A native of Chicago\, Lila has had many musical influences from family to a myriad of musicians and from the musical styles of Mozart to Monk. And she has inherited an illustrious legacy through the gifts of her grandfather and uncle: Albert Ammons (piano) and Gene Ammons (tenor sax).\n\nAmmons was previously based in New York City where she attended graduate school at the Manhattan School of Music\, and for 13 years performed opera\, oratorio and recitals around the US and Europe. It was then that she began her international travels through music. But\, she had other musical passions and decided that she needed to pursue them. In 1997\, excited to work on her new craft\, she packed up and left New York for Minneapolis\, Minnesota to be near family and there\, she has cultivated a career in jazz. \nFrom 2007-2018 she has toured internationally singing classic blues and boogie woogie in major concert halls\, international jazz and blues festivals\, theaters and jazz clubs throughout Austria\, Germany\, Switzerland\, The Netherlands\, Brazil\, Bulgaria\, Italy\, France\, Belgium\, England. In the US she performed in Chicago\, New York City\, Cincinnati\, Ohio\, Ann Arbor and Detroit Michigan\, and Houston\, Texas. Still not quite satisfied that she was realizing her dream\, in 2015 Lila began reducing her classic blues touring to focus on the jazz music she truly loves. And in 2016 she began receiving international invitations to perform as a solo jazz singer in England\, Ireland\, France and Spain. \nSince 2007\, Ammons has worked with numerous internationally acclaimed musicians such as\, Axel Zwingenberger\, Charlie Watts\, Ben Waters\, Jools Holland\, Chris Jagger\, Judy Carmichael\, Sonny Leyland\, Bruce Barth\, and Tony Sola\, to name a few. In the Twin Cities\, she performs with many of the area’s best jazz and blues instrumentalists. \nIn Ammons’s debut jazz recording\, Nearness of You (2013) she is partnered with top musicians\, including tenor saxophonist\, Houston Person. Her newest album\, Genealogy\, was released August 2019 and includes a wide variety of exciting material and a very notable crew of musicians.

SUMMARY:Django Festival Allstars featuring Special Guest Veronica Swift
DESCRIPTION:Django Reinhardt’s unmistakable cool and jumping joie de vivre have made him an icon. Many guitar luminaries cite his inspiration\, including guitar greats Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton. Moreover\, Jimi Hendrix named his Band of Gypsys in tribute to Reinhardt. Willie Nelson adopted his influence in playing country swing. \nThe star musicians of the Django Festival Allstars have grown into a brilliantly cohesive group. They have performed at top concert halls and festivals to standing ovations. Also\, they have wowed audiences in venues across North America. \nThe group’s music transports listeners to Paris in the 1920s and ’30s. Here\, the All-stars bring Reinhardt’s music into the 21st century. They honor traditions and standards while adding their own interpretations\, arrangements\, and original compositions. They swing like crazy and will break your heart with a ballad. \nLed for years by guitar master Dorado Schmitt\, the Allstars are now fronted by Dorado’s son\, Samson. Samson has been playing professionally since he was twelve years old and has several recordings to his credit. Flanked by the other superb musicians in this group\, the future of Django’s music is in good hands indeed! \nVeronica Swift has made her mark on the international jazz scene as one of the star vocalists of her era. Now\, Swift expands her style\, establishing herself as a skilled rock and soul singer as well as a dynamic performer. Here\, she transcends styles\, and fully embodies them with authenticity to tell a story. This makes her one of the most skillful singers in any genre and displays her theatrical approach. \nVeronica Swift\, vocals\nSamson Schmitt\, lead guitar\, vocals\nPierre Blanchard\, violin\nLudovic Beier\, accordion and accordina\nAntonio Licusati\, bass\nFrancko Mehrstein\, rhythm guitar

His adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite has been cited as a significant contribution to solo guitar literature. For Sparks\, it was a labor of love that earned him the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in Winfield\, Kansas in 1993. \nHis wide travels inspired his interest in European and Mediterranean styles\, particularly the music of the Balkans. Upon his return to Minnesota\, Sparks immersed himself in the ethnic music scene\, performing on Oud and Saz in Middle Eastern ensembles and playing guitar in Greek\, Klezmer\, and Sephardic groups. This work culminated in the recording of Sparks’ Balkan Dreams Suite\, a remarkable collection of odd-meter guitar arrangements. \nSparks’ work came to the attention of John Zorn\, the saxophonist\, composer\, and curator of Tzadik Records in New York\, and thereby led to a new cycle of compositions inspired by traditional Jewish melodies. Neshamah (1999) is a solo effort; Tanz\, (2000) which garnered Downbeat Magazine’s highest praise\, five stars; and At the Rebbe’s Table (2002). In 2003\, Tzadik released Masada Guitars\, fea- turing interpretations of John Zorn’s music by Tim\, Bill Frisell\, and Marc Ribot. \nIn recent years\, Sparks’ musical focus has come full circle\, returning to the country blues and classic jazz that served as a springboard for his worldwide guitar explorations. He toured with Dolly Parton in 2005 and recorded Roots\, Rags and Blues for Truefire Acoustic Guitar Workshop. \nSparks released Sidewalk Blues on the ToneWood label in February 2009 and recorded Little Princess\, his fifth CD for Tzadik\, in New York in 2009. Post-Modern Fingerstyle Guitar was released on Truefire in 2011. Sparks released Chasin’ the Boogie\, his 10th acoustic guitar recording on May 30\, 2014 followed by Jukebox Dreamin’ in December 2018.

SUMMARY:Alex Cuba at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:It’s a strange thing\, watching audiences sing along with Alex without speaking his native Spanish. But they do. They “la-la-la” their way from chorus to chorus\, caught up in his inescapable gravitational pull. His warm\, elastic vocals float above a sound essentially from everywhere. It’s an effortless mix of funk\, soul\, and pan-Latin textures\, and no matter where you’re from\, you can’t help it. You’re home.  \nHe discovered music’s power to mesmerize and transport you at an early age. “I used to skip meals\,” says Cuba\, speaking of the long days he spent locked in his room as a child in Artemisa\, Cuba\, mastering the bass. “My mother would have to remind me that I was human\, that I needed food. Music has always taken me away like that.” Today\, he carries audiences away with his performances in the same fashion\, from the Hollywood Bowl to Radio Music City Hall. There\, he has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Sheryl Crow and Juan Luis Guerra. He casts his spell as if genres weren’t a thing.  \nAt the heart of his ability to charm anything that breathes is Alex’s mastery of a deeper\, more important language. The dude speaks joy. And it doesn’t matter if it’s Tito Puente joy or Stevie Wonder joy; it’s contagious. It shines through songs he’s co-written with Nelly Furtado and Jason Mraz. It’s the north star of his compositions.  \nThis undeniable exuberance\, expressed with masterful musicianship\, has catapulted Alex to the highest levels of global critical acclaim. It led this fiercely independent artist to two Juno awards\, four Latin Grammys\, and a 2022 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album.
