And she has inherited an illustrious legacy through the gifts of her grandfather and uncle: Albert Ammons (piano) and Gene Ammons (tenor sax). Ammons was previously based in New York City where she attended graduate school at the Manhattan School of Music\, and for 13 years performed opera\, oratorio and recitals around the US and Europe. It was then that she began her international travels through music. But\, she had other musical passions and decided that she needed to pursue them. In 1997\, excited to work on her new craft\, she packed up and left New York for Minneapolis\, Minnesota to be near family and there\, she has cultivated a career in jazz.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Caranicas is a consummate performer of traditional and main stream jazz and has graced the stages of many of the finest jazz venues in the world. Charlie co-led the house band at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City and he was the trumpet soloist with the renowned Rainbow Room Orchestra.\nCharlie has performed with bands as varied as Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks\, the Independence Hall Jazz Band\, the Onyx Club Sextet\, the Karrin Allyson Group\, the Kelly Friesen Quintet\, the Chico O’Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra\, the Vanguard Orchestra and the Flying Neutrinos. Charlie has been in the pit and on stage for several Broadway shows. Charlie has also received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.\nCharlie has been described as a “wonderfully musical\, notably articulate” trumpet player with a “beautiful sound” and “impressive choice of notes” (Clive Griffin\,Jazz Improv); “lyrical and emotive” (George Fendel\, JazzScene); a “crispy Clifford Brown” (Still Another Jazz Show\, 88.7 FM\, Sacramento\, CA); a “joy to hear” and “capable of making famous standards his own” (Scott Yanow\, All About Jazz).\nOriginally from Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, Charlie studied music at the University of Minnesota and was part of that City’s music scene before moving to New York City in the early 1990s. Charlie has been featured on many CDs\, most recently on his own duet project with stride pianist Tom Roberts entitled “Move Over” featuring music from the first half of the 20th Century. DESCRIPTION:Mama Digdown’s will bring Brass Jackson to the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis on Saturday\, November 21 at 7:30 p.m.\, for a special musical performance and Minneapolis album release. Opening the show will be local cuban music aces Yazmin and Beat Zero\, with special guest Yusa\, the Havana-born musician now based in New Orleans. Comedian Trish Cook will emcee. \nOn their new release\, Brass Jackson\, Mama Digdown’s Brass Band reimagines ten of Jackson’s biggest hits through the sound of a brass band. Familiar melodies are recast in punchy horn lines\, gritty funk\, and the rolling rhythms of the second line. The songs remain recognizable\, but their center of gravity shifts. Music built for stadiums and dance floors finds a different kind of life in the hands of a band whose musical instincts have been shaped by three decades of playing\, listening\, traveling\, and learning. \nYazmin and Beat Zero will perform with special guest Yusa\, the Havana-born singer-songwriter\, guitarist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer now based in New Orleans. Yusa’s music draws on Cuban trova and Afro-Cuban traditions while moving freely through jazz\, soul\, funk\, and rock. Her international career includes collaborations with Lenine\, Lila Downs\, and Susana Baca\, as well as touring with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on Tuba to Cuba. Her appearance creates a natural connection between the evening’s artists: musicians who draw deeply from their own traditions while allowing those traditions to meet and evolve.

DESCRIPTION:Grady Cartony & Friends\nGrady Cartony is an 18 year old tenor saxophonist making his mark on the Twin Cities jazz scene — playing professionally since 14 and picking up the saxophone at age 10. \nThough tenor saxophone is his primary voice\, Grady is a true multi-instrumentalist\, also performing on alto and soprano saxophone\, clarinet\, flute\, and piano. He has played throughout the Twin Cities metro with ensembles including the Minnesota Youth Jazz Band and the Nova Contemporary Jazz Orchestra\, among many others\, and was selected for the Minnesota All-State Jazz Band. Grady also leads his own quintet\, the “Grady Cartony Quintet” and you can see them playing all over the Twin Cities! \nHis playing draws from the language of Gene Ammons\, Charlie Parker\, John Coltrane\, Cedar Walton\, and Sonny Stitt\, among many others. Grady has performed at venues and festivals including the Dakota Jazz Club\, Jazz Central\, Crooners Supper Club\, MetroNome Brewery\, the Pablo Center at the Confluence\, Minnesota Music Cafe\, the Twin Cities Jazz Festival\, the Duluth Jazz Festival\, the Berlin MPLS and Smalls Jazz Club in New York City — sharing the stage with artists such as Chad LB\, Kenni Holmen\, Dale Alexander\, Tom Lewis\, Omar Abdulkarim\, Kevin Washington\, Jennifer Grimm\, Kavyesh Kaviraj\, and Phil Hey. He has studied under acclaimed jazz artists Scott Johnson\, Mike Tucker\, Ryan Devlin\, and Eric Alexander. \nGrady is currently at the prestigious New England Conservatory in Boston\, and is studying under Jerry Bergonzi and Donny McCaslin. \n🎶 \nA portion of every pint\, along with your added support\, goes directly to music education programs in the Twin Cities.
