SUMMARY:Kenny Reichert’s Letters From the Road: Twin Cities Quartet at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Kenny Reichert has spent much of the past decade on the road: driving across North America and Europe\, sharing meals with bandmates\, and performing gig after gig. His original music has been shaped by those travels and the people he has met along the way. Now based between Minneapolis and Chicago\, Reichert will be bringing time-tested and brand-new ensembles to Berlin in Minneapolis and North Street Cabaret in Madison\, WI\, every weekend in May. \nReichert’s Twin Cities Quartet is a newer working band focused entirely on unrecorded repertoire. The compositions lean toward modern jazz language while blending elements of avant-garde improvisation and folk-influenced melody and form. Each of the players’ personalities will shape each performance. \nBand Members:\nKenny Reichert – Guitar\nKavyesh Kaviraj – Piano\nGraydon Peterson – Bass\nBen Ehrlich – Drums \n⊹ \nRecognized by DownBeat magazine as “a distinctive player and composer\,” Kenny Reichert has established himself as a compelling guitarist with an expressive\, refined approach to his instrument. His artistry has been praised by All About Jazz as “masterly without being showy\,” and Textura has lauded his compositions for making an “immediate impression” and “warranting repeat engagement.” \nBased between Chicago and Minneapolis\, Reichert is an in-demand performer who has collaborated with artists such as Russ Johnson\, Geof Bradfield\, Lenard Simpson\, Clark Sommers\, Ethan Philion\, John Christensen\, Devin Drobka\, Ana Everling\, and Alyssa Allgood. He has performed at venues and festivals across the United States and Europe\, bringing his music to audiences in intimate and large-scale settings. \nReichert has released four albums as a leader. His latest\, Live in Chicago\, features his longtime collaborators and their deep musical interactions. His previous albums Switch (2024\, Calligram Records); Deep Breath (2023\, Shifting Paradigm Records); and Interpretations (2015)\, cemented his reputation as a forward-thinking guitarist and composer.

SUMMARY:JT Bates Quartet at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:This quartet—formed by JT Bates a number of years ago—digs back into lesser known standards\, the beautiful melodies of the past given to us by the founders of this wonderful music. Now with the added weight of history\, these songs and textures remind us all of power and delight inside the journey. \nBand Members:\nJT Bates – Drums\nJeff Bailey – Bass\nMichael Lewis – Saxophone\nBryan Nichols – Piano \n⊹ \nGrowing up in a musical family gave JT Bates an early start into sound and rhythmic exploration. He set on the path to becoming a working musician while playing in his father’s big band as a teen. Over the years\, he remained steeped in the improvised music scene\, both as a performer and presenter. In 2015\, he produced and released his first solo album\, Open Relationships (Totally Gross National Product)\, and in 2021\, he released an album called Not Other Stuff. As a session drummer\, Bates has appeared on Grammy record of the year Folklore (Taylor Swift) and Swift’s follow-up album\, Evermore. He has also performed on the Grammy-nominated album s/t (Bonny Light Horseman) and critically acclaimed records by Bon Iver\, Big Red Machine\, Cassandra Jenkins\, The National\, Maya Hawke\, and Ed Sheeran. \nJeff Bailey is a preeminent bassist in the Twin Cities. He is the director of the Certificate in Music Production Program at Hamline University\, and he served as bass department head at McNally Smith College of Music for six years\, developing and implementing a curriculum that integrated modern music technology with traditional conservatory culture. \nMichael Lewis is regarded throughout the Twin Cities and well beyond as one of the most creative sax players in modern music\, lending his blowing and bowing skills to a number of highly regarded ensembles. He is a core member of Happy Apple\, Alpha Consumer\, Bon Iver\, and Fat Kid Wednesdays and has performed with Andrew Bird\, Gayngs\, and Fog. \nBryan Nichols is a pianist\, composer\, and educator based in Minneapolis. Often found playing jazz and improvised music\, but at home in a variety of musical worlds\, he leads and composes for his own trio\, quintet\, and nonet\, in addition to performing\, recording\, and touring with a variety of forward-thinking artists. The Star Tribune has called him “a versatile\, daring and inventive keyboardist…one of the Twin Cities’ most respected jazz players.” He is a recipient of a prestigious McKnight Fellowship for Performing Artists and a residency at the Kennedy Center for Betty Carter’s Jazz Aheadprogram. Nichols has released two albums as a leader to critical and audience acclaim; an original solo piano work\, Looking North;and a suite of originals for his quintet\, Bright Places.

SUMMARY:Robert Glasper at Dakota Jazz Club Night 3
DESCRIPTION:Robert Glasper is the leader of a new sonic paradigm with a career that bridges musical and artistic genres. To date\, he boasts five Grammy wins and sixteen nominations across eleven categories. Additionally\, he received an Emmy for his song for Ava Duvernay’s critically hailed documentary 13th with Common and Karriem Riggins. His work and accolades bridge all aspects of the music business\, from live touring to film scoring\, composing and producing. \nEvolution is his hallmark. Glasper’s breakout crossover album Black Radio changed the face of the genre and set a new expectation for what popular music could be. Then\, the album won him the Grammy for best R&B album. Further\, it established him as the musician of choice for some of the world’s most iconic artists. Glasper played keys throughout Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp A Butterfly\, winning another Grammy for the elastic track “These Walls”. The ongoing Black Radio series has become Glasper’s calling card\, upholding a place at the heart of a trailblazing community. Collaborators range from long-time sonic brothers Mos Def and Bilal to legends including Ledisi\, Lupe Fiasco\, Kanye West\, Jill Scott\, and Erykah Badu. \nGlasper’s eternal pursuit to further his sound has been consistent in challenging and transforming his creative horizons across the board. Whether producing a remix album with Kaytranda or as a bandleader\, Robert consistently defies the limits of the genre. Moreover\, this is evident in his expansive portfolio and range of projects. His acoustic trio simultaneously defies and elevates the traditional idiom\, uniting it effortlessly with electronics from visionary DJ Jahi Sundance. August Greene is a collaboration with Common + Karriem Riggins. R+R=Now is a new supergroup at the crossroads of hip-hop and jazz.

To date\, he boasts five Grammy wins and sixteen nominations across eleven categories. Additionally\, he received an Emmy for his song for Ava Duvernay’s critically hailed documentary 13th with Common and Karriem Riggins. SUMMARY:MGS Jazz and Fingerstyle Series Concert
DESCRIPTION:Tim Sparks has been redefining the acoustic guitar repertoire since he won the National Fingerpicking Championship in 1993 with a ground-breaking arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Sparks continues to surprise\, challenge\, and thrill audiences with his diverse repertoire and stunning technique. Equally at home with Country Blues\, Jazz or World Music\, Sparks’ extraordinary ability has earned him an international reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists working today. \nTom Lieberman’s songs have been heard from Sesame Street to Sweet Land. He is an original member of the seminal vocal jazz trio Rio Nido and was associated with public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion from 1976-86\, where he worked variously as a performer\, writer and utility infielder until he was “asked” to hand over the show’s guitar chair to the Country Gentleman himself\, Chet Atkins. He is currently the creator of the musical story world of Ukulele Alley and the voice of “everybody’s favorite talking ukulele\,” Luke the Uke. \nAt age 11\, Ben Abrahamson found his path set ablaze by guitar heroes Paco de Lucía\, Leo Kottke\, Ralph Towner\, and his first guitar teacher Gary Lee Joyner. Ben has studied with flamenco guitarists Juan Ramón Caro at Taller de Músics in Barcelona\, Pedro Cortés\, Jr.\, and Michael Hauser. Ben is a faculty member at MacPhail Center for Music and a teaching artist with the MGS Guitar In Our Schools program.

\nOriginally conceived during a residency at the Ragdale Foundation\, the Colours Quintet music draws from Reichert’s time spent walking and observing the prairie landscape.

SUMMARY:Joe Policastro Trio at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:The Joe Policastro Trio is a forward-thinking\, Chicago-based jazz trio hailed by DownBeat for its “deft analysis of choice repertoire” and by the Chicago Reader for its “diversity of approaches to all kinds of source material.” While firmly rooted in jazz\, the band’s open-minded\, inclusive nature draws upon a wide array of musical styles and sources while keeping the aesthetic of an acoustic trio intact. \nThe band recently released its seventh album\, Mending Wall. Through highly personal readings of music from Italy and Hong Kong\, movie scores and symphonic themes\, pop tunes\, and even a cowboy song written by a Russian classical composer\, the trio explores the nature of identity\, boundaries\, and borders. Their diverse catalog—Ceremony (2023)\, Sounds Unheard (2022)\, Nothing Here Belongs (2019)\, Screen Sounds (2017)\, POPS! (2016)\, and West Side Story Suite (2013)—captures the band’s progressive\, forward-thinking\, non-hierarchical approach\, whether they are showcasing their original music or remaking unlikely songs in a characteristically raw\, idiosyncratic fashion. \nTrue bands are a rarity in jazz these days\, especially ones that hone their craft as consistently as this one does. The band held court thrice-weekly at Pops for Champagne in downtown Chicago for over a decade. Beyond Chicago\, the trio has been extensively playing together at clubs and festivals throughout the United States and Canada. \nBand Members:\nJoe Policastro – Bass\nDave Miller – Guitar\nMikel Avery – Drums
