SUMMARY:Tim Sparks\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein at the Lex!
DESCRIPTION:Tim Sparks has been redefining the acoustic guitar repertoire since he won the National Fingerpicking Championship in 1993 with a ground breaking arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Sparks continues to surprise\, challenge\, and thrill audiences with his diverse repertoire and stunning technique. Equally at home with Country Blues\, Jazz or World Music\, Sparks’ extraordinary ability has earned him an international reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists working today.\nTrained by Segovia protege Jesus Silva at the North Carolina School of the Arts\, Sparks has continued to study classical music throughout his career. His adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite has been cited as a significant contribution to solo guitar literature. For Sparks it was a labor of love that earned him the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in Winfield\, Kansas in 1993\nHis wide travels inspired his interest in European and Mediterranean styles\, particularly the music of the Balkans. Upon his return to Minnesota\, Sparks immersed himself in the ethnic music scene\, performing on Oud and Saz in Middle Eastern ensembles and playing guitar in Greek\, Klezmer\, and Sephardic groups. This work culminated in the recording of Sparks’ Balkan Dreams Suite\, a remarkable collection of odd-meter guitar arrangements. \nSparks’ work came to the attention of John Zorn\, the saxophonist\, composer\, and curator of Tzadik Records in New York and thereby led to a new cycle of compositions inspired by traditional Jewish melodies. Neshamah (1999) is a solo effort; Tanz\, (2000) which garnered Downbeat Magazine’s highest praise\, five stars; and At the Rebbe’s Table (2002). In 2003 Tzadik released Masada Guitars\, featuring interpretations of John Zorn’s music by Tim\, Bill Frisell\, and Marc Ribot. \nIn recent years\, Sparks’ musical focus has come full circle\, returning to the country blues and classic jazz that served as a springboard for his worldwide guitar explorations. He toured with Dolly Parton in 2005 and recorded Roots\, Rags and Blues for Truefire Acoustic Guitar Workshop.\nSparks released Sidewalk Blues on the ToneWood label in February 2009 and recorded Little Princess\, his fifth CD for Tzadik\, in New York in 2009. Post-Modern Fingerstyle Guitar was released on Truefire in 2011.\nSparks released Chasin’ the Boogie\, his 10th acoustic guitar recording on May 30\, 2014 followed by Jukebox Dreamin’ in December 2018. \n

SUMMARY:Prudence Johnson & the Halcyon Jazz Quartet at Crooners
DESCRIPTION:Jazz with an Understated Vibe\nVersatility can be rewarding but some music just feels like home. Vocalist Prudence Johnson returns to her jazz roots with the Halcyon Jazz Quartet\, following their sparkling debut at Crooners last spring. With an “off the beaten path” approach to repertoire and featuring the amazing Dave Hagedorn on vibes\, and top-shelf rhythm section Joe Pulice and Kevin Clements\, Halcyon takes the “less is more” approach and reaches for the emotional and musical depths of a song with a controlled intensity. \nPrudence Johnson: Voice \nDave Hagedorn: Vibraphone \nJoe Pulice: Drums \nGary Raynor: Acoustic Bass \nPrudence Johnson is well known to Crooners audiences\, appearing with Lush Country\, with Rio Nido\, in duos with Dan Chouinard\, Tim Sparks or Dean Magraw\, in shows featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein and Randy Newman\, singing in French and Italian\, or with Latin-jazz sensation Yazmin. But her reputation as a jazz singer lives on\, and\, in a new venture\, she joins forces with three of the region’s finest instrumentalists to form the Halcyon Jazz Quartet.

SUMMARY:Lucia Sarmiento at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:On her remarkable debut album\, 2025’s Escape\, Peruvian-American saxophonist/composer Lucia Sarmiento emerges as a rising star in modern jazz. Here\, she delivers playful yet intricate melodies. “When I play the saxophone\, I love that feeling of danger\,” says Sarmiento. With a powerful tenor sound and an effervescent personality\, she explains\, “I’m drawn to music filled with intensity and risk that captures every fiber of your being in the moment; that’s why I love jazz.” \nLucia has performed on sold-out stages with international pop stars Pitbull and Karol G. Additionally\, she has also headlined jazz festivals under her own name. Her fearless approach to music and her commitment to crafting bold\, textured compositions make her an exciting new jazz voice. \n“Minneapolis raised me musically\,” she reflects. “It’s a smaller city compared to LA or NYC\, but the music scene is vibrant\, steeped in the legacy of Prince. I began performing with Prince’s long-time collaborators and Weather Report’s legendary drummer Eric Gravatt right out of college. I got to explore every genre from Minneapolis funk to brass band\, and from Motown to free jazz. What was really important was that I came to develop my own sound. At first\, it wasn’t easy to keep up with the loud drums\, distorted guitars and very experienced funk players\, so I spent lots of time working on my sound and time. I also admire how Michael Brecker\, Bob Mintzer\, and Chris Potter play with so much strength and a sense of urgency—that’s how I want to play.” \nIn recent years\, Lucia has gained a social media following of over 100k+ people. Also\, she has released educational videos in Spanish and English that provide a global perspective on jazz and saxophone.

SUMMARY:Robb Henry\, Matt Senjem\, Jay Epstein
DESCRIPTION:After a year and a half break in live performances from March 2020 through July 2021 due to the pandemic\, Parisota Hot Club and the Robb Henry Trio are back to work once again. See the dates page for upcoming 2022 performances. \nAlthough best known for his recent work with Parisota Hot Club\, a band he formed in 2001 to explore the music and jazz guitar stylings of French guitarist Django Reinhardt\, Robb’s musical background includes a diverse range of experience. \nRobb’s guitar playing odyssey began in the autumn of 1966 at the age of thirteen when he joined up with the Surfers\, an established teenage rock band from the Hopkins/Minnetonka area. The popular group played many teen dances in the western suburbs of Minneapolis\, recorded a self-produced 45\, and appeared on local KMSP 9 television show “Organ Notes” in late 1966 before dissolving in early 1968. \nLater in the summer of that year\, he fell in with a group of young blues fanatics through a new acquaintance\, singer and blues harp player Reg Clow. This group eventually hooked up with blues singer and harp player Mojo Buford in the winter of 1968-69 and played with him through the summer of 1970. This experience with Mojo\, a Chicago style blues artist and close associate of the legendary Muddy Waters\, proved to be a major influence in Robb’s solo guitar work. Mojo served as a mentor to many young blues players during his time in the Twin Cities. \nIn early 1971 Robb was brought into the Top Forty danceband Brave New World by his old Surfers bandmate Bob Fisher. Worked lounges\, nightclubs\, and bars throughout the 1970’s with groups including Brave New World\, Walter Mitty\, The Philadelphia Story soul review at the Flame Bar\, Inside Straight and Sweet Thing. Gigged at the Longhorn bar with Fingerprints and recorded on Twin/Tone Records. Relocated to Chicago ’79-’84\, worked with songwriter Jessie Roe\, country singer Kent Rose\, legendary new wave singer Jim Desmond\, R&B funk group Frankie Hill and Metropol\, and back to the blues with Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report from Gary\, Indiana. \nRelocated back to Minneapolis at the end of 1984\, recorded and played gigs with Tom Bright. Briefly fronted a blues-rock trio called World Wide Hoodoo. Played jazz and pop in the ’90’s with corporate and wedding bands\, did blues gigs and recorded with Cooker John band\, explored new styles and material in solo guitar coffeehouse gigs from 1994 through 2002\, also began teaching private guitar lessons on a regular basis in early 1995 ….met French expatriate and violinist Raphaël Fraisse in 2001 and voila! Parisota Hot Club \nNotable groups: The Surfers ’66-’67… Mojo Buford ’69-’70… Brave New World ’71-’72… Walter Mitty ’73…Philadelphia Story ’75… Inside Straight and Sweet Thing 1976-1977\, Fingerprints ’77-’78… Kent Rose 1980…Desmond ’81… Metropol ’83-’84…Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report ’84…Tom Bright 1986-’91… World Wide Hoodoo 1986-’88… Parisota Hot Club 2001 to present… Robb Henry Trio early 2010 to present \nSome memorable performances: “Organ Notes” November 1966 KMSP 9 TV appearance with the Surfers… B.B. King show at the Depot in Minneapolis 1970 with Mojo Buford…opening for U2 at Park West in Chicago 1981 with Desmond….playing Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis with Parisota Hot Club 2005 \nSince early 2010\, he has also been performing a distinctive blend of instrumental music with his self-titled guitar\, bass and drums trio. \nLive sets by this combo are a melting pot of styles steeped in blues\, jazz and ’60’s pop music. Retro noire style movie themes\, à la Henry Mancini and others\, selections by Django Reinhardt\, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles are standard set features.Familiar melodies\, unexpected excursions\, and sonic surprises reminiscent of vintage psychedelic Brit-Rock\, make for a fluid\, musical landscape.

SUMMARY:Ryan Meisel Quartet at Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee saxophonist Ryan Meisel presents a night of original jazz featuring Minneapolis-based guitarist Toivo Hannigan and bassist Dan Carpel with Milwaukee’s Jake Polancich on drums. The quartet will perform music from Meisel’s latest vinyl recordings: “Spirit Dance\,” a tribute to 1960s John Coltrane\, and “Jarred\,” inspired by 1970s Miles Davis. \nBand Members:\nRyan Meisel – Saxophone\nDan Carpel – Bass\nJake Polancich – Drums\nToivo Hannigan – Guitar \n⊹ \nRyan Meisel is a multi-instrumentalist\, educator\, and composer from Milwaukee\, WI. He grew up outside of Milwaukee and honed his jazz skills under the tutelage of legendary bassist Richard Davis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and master jazz educators Ron Carter and Rodrigo Villanueva at Northern Illinois University. A postmodern jazzman whether he’s playing bari\, tenor\, alto\, or soprano sax\, Meisel can captivate an audience with his sweet sinuous tone then excite with his burly edginess. Performing with his classic sax/guitar/bass/drums quartet\, Meisel’s fiery saxophone playing pushes his group’s improvisational limits. Meisel’s work pays tribute to the sounds of New Orleans traditional jazz\, blues\, swing\, hard bop\, and the avant-garde.
