SUMMARY:John Penny's Virtual Band and Trio at The High Hat
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis guitarist\, composer\, and singer John Penny brings his Virtual Band\, AND his Guitar Trio to The High Hat for a unique night of music. Both of Penny’s projects aim to deliver inspiration with original World Jazz and American Roots music. The virtual Band calls on Penny’s background in scoring music for film. From decades of composing Jazz and music for mixed media\, the backing tracks come ornamented with exotic accompaniments that interact with Penny’s live guitar and voice. For the Trio\, Penny is joined by bassist Charlie Riddle and drummer Mo Engel. The trio comes with a highly interactive chemistry that makes for engaged listening as the three veteran players let emotions loose. \nPenny has performed thousands of gigs including as a band member and in concert with Jazz greats Eric Gravatt\, Bobby Lyle\, Bernard Purdie\, Jack MacDuff\, and others. His guitar explorations introduce a distinctly emotive style\, fused from the teachings of John Coltrane\, John McLaughlin\, Jimi Hendrix\, Chick Corea\, and great violin concertos. His vocal serenades in the tenor register are reminiscent of Jazz singer Jon Hendricks. Songs performed in English\, Spanish\, and Portuguese resonate with Folk cultures from Latin America\, Africa\, and Europe. Penny is an award winning orchestral composer\, veteran Jazz guitarist\, and singer with a playful fondness for translating human emotion into soundscape and song. www.johnpennymusic.com

SUMMARY:Open Story (Dean Magraw\, Bryan Nichols\, Jay Epstein)
DESCRIPTION:Open Story was launched in 2016\, bringing together three local veterans who somehow had never played together before. It’s not as if Dean Magraw\, Bryan Nichols or Jay Epstein has extra time to start a new band\, keeping busy with numerous projects in leading\, collaborative and supporting roles. Yet they found time to come together as Open Story. Each of these musicians is already fully booked in the Twin Cities area: Magraw with Red Planet & BluLuna\, and duos with Eric Gravatt\, Butch Thompson & Bruce Henry; Nichols with Mancrush\, and Zacc Harris Quartet; Epstein with Red Planet\, BluLuna\, Framework\, Firebell and Tall Tales. As Open Story\, Dean Magraw\, Bryan Nichols and Jay Epstein prove to be as effective as collaborators as they are talented as solo performers\, bandleaders\, and sidemen. – Andrea Canter\, JazzPolice.com

SUMMARY:Dean Magraw\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein at the Hat!
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by decades of performing and recording with a cornucopia of heroic Artists\, Dean Magraw’s poetic musical dynamism mines the depths of passionate healing melody stirring up textures of the unusual and the familiar as the music weaves the simple story of how we feel right now.\n“Dean’s guitar playing transcends\, transports and lifts the soul to a higher level as he weaves\, cajoles and entices every note from his instrument. The note\, length of note\, tone of note\, the bending of the note; every colour of the note is explored and delivered with a master’s care and love. Just as important are the silences with which he knits his music… these can only come with being at one with one’s art. Dean Magraw is an incredible world class musician who’s modesty only makes him more appreciated by the listener.” -Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (Altan)\n“Dean Magraw… so liquid\, lyrical and effortless it’s like listening to a dancer.” -Steve Tibbetts\n“Dean Magraw unveils soulful melodic grooves intricately designed to heal the broken dancer\, confuse the boldest mathematician\, and eradicate ennui in our lifetime.” -Nick Lethert \nHome

SUMMARY:Brandon Wozniak\, Phil Aaron\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein
DESCRIPTION:To appreciate the cool vibe jazz saxophonist Brandon Wozniak brings to a set\, it pays to watch him stride to the bandstand. \nWith a tall and imposing presence\, Wozniak evokes the image of the great horn players in whose steps he follows. Among them would certainly be Dexter Gordon\, the silky smooth master whose photo hangs to the left of the stage at St. Paul’s Artists’ Quarter\, where the saxophonist performs Saturday with bassist Adam Linz and drummer Eric Kamau Gravatt. \nWozniak plays with a number of Twin Cities jazz ensembles\, among them Monk in Motion\, the Adam Meckler Quintet\, the Bryan Nichols Quintet\, Dave King Trucking Company and the Atlantis Quartet. \nBesides excellent technique\, the saxophonist brings stirring emotion to the groups and a flowing style. Although he often plays a supportive role to the soloists\, he is an improvisational leader among leaders. \n“My role is usually to play the melody line and to try to tell a story through improvisation\,” Wozniak said. “It’s not always about that\, but I do play the saxophone so it kind of comes with the territory. The people I play with regularly know I’m going try to create and play something original every time I step on stage and they know I’m going to listen to every note and beat they play.” \nAdding his voice to a group while retaining individuality comes easily to Wozniak. A Green Bay\, Wis.\, native who grew up in Colorado and Indiana\, he studied at Indiana University\, which has a rigorous jazz studies program led by master educator David Baker. Heavily based on bebop patterns and scales\, it stressed jazz fundamentals: how to play tunes and navigate chord changes. \nThough he thinks it might have made more sense to skip college and follow Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman around for a few years\, Wozniak credits his saxophone professor Tom Walsh with letting him know there are no shortcuts. \n“Everyone has their own path\,” he said. “As long as you continue the search you’ll get to where you’re supposed to be eventually.” \nWozniak’s path led him to New York City and the Tom Dorsey band\, where he learned from journeyman musicians. Six years ago\, he returned to the Twin Cities\, where his parents live. \nSince then\, he’s done some of his most innovative work for the Atlantis Quartet\, which also includes bassist Chris Bates\, drummer Pete Hennig and guitarist Zacc Harris. \nWozniak didn’t know what to expect when he arrived\, but was pleased to find a solid core of musicians intent on improving their craft\, and keeping jazz alive. \n“There are a lot of creative people here\,” he said. “I don’t think I would have stuck around if this wasn’t the case. I knew about Happy Apple but that was about it. I need to be around people who are trying to create and grow as improvisers and would be miserable otherwise. \n“Fortunately for me\, there are a lot of talented artists of all kinds in Minnesota and I can honestly say I no longer miss New York City. I do miss my friends and the music there sometimes but I actually play there more now than I did when I lived there and I get a chance to see people when I’m out there.” \nWozniak has been in the recording studio of late\, for Harris’ recently released album The Garden and for an upcoming record by Chris Bates. He’s also writing his own tunes and hopes to deliver a recording next year. \nMeanwhile\, he’s continually playing\, not worried about who receives top billing. \n“I plan on leading more in the future but even if a project is under someone’s name\, we all collaborate and trade ideas so much that it all feels like one big creative collective most of the time\,” Wozniak said. “I’m not interested in putting out a record just so people can see my name and say he’s finally a leader as if that’s the final hump to me becoming a great player. \n“We all lead in different ways\, I try to do it through my playing and I think that’s what’s earned me the most amount of respect among my peers. I may not always say it with words but I don’t think there’s much doubt about what’s going to happen once we start playing. At this point I just want to continue doing what I’ve been doing\, trying to play the music that’s in my head.”

SUMMARY:Tim Sparks\, Gary Raynor\, Jay Epstein at the Hat!
DESCRIPTION:Tim Sparks has been redefining the acoustic guitar repertoire since he won the National Fingerpicking Championship in 1993 with a ground breaking arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Sparks continues to surprise\, challenge\, and thrill audiences with his diverse repertoire and stunning technique. Equally at home with Country Blues\, Jazz or World Music\, Sparks’ extraordinary ability has earned him an international reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists working today. \nTrained by Segovia protege Jesus Silva\, at the North Carolina School of the Arts\, Sparks has continued to study classical music throughout his career. His adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite has been cited as a significant contribution to solo guitar literature. For Sparks\, it was a labor of love that earned him the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in Winfield\, Kansas in 1993. \nHis wide travels inspired his interest in European and Mediterranean styles\, particularly the music of the Balkans. Upon his return to Minnesota\, Sparks immersed himself in the ethnic music scene\, performing on Oud and Saz in Middle Eastern ensembles and playing guitar in Greek\, Klezmer\, and Sephardic groups. This work culminated in the recording of Sparks’ Balkan Dreams Suite\, a remarkable collection of odd-meter guitar arrangements. \nSparks’ work came to the attention of John Zorn\, the saxophonist\, composer\, and curator of Tzadik Records in New York\, and thereby led to a new cycle of compositions inspired by traditional Jewish melodies. Neshamah (1999) is a solo effort; Tanz\, (2000) which garnered Downbeat Magazine’s highest praise\, five stars; and At the Rebbe’s Table (2002). In 2003\, Tzadik released Masada Guitars\, fea- turing interpretations of John Zorn’s music by Tim\, Bill Frisell\, and Marc Ribot. \nIn recent years\, Sparks’ musical focus has come full circle\, returning to the country blues and classic jazz that served as a springboard for his worldwide guitar explorations. He toured with Dolly Parton in 2005 and recorded Roots\, Rags and Blues for Truefire Acoustic Guitar Workshop. \nSparks released Sidewalk Blues on the ToneWood label in February 2009 and recorded Little Princess\, his fifth CD for Tzadik\, in New York in 2009. Post-Modern Fingerstyle Guitar was released on Truefire in 2011. Sparks released Chasin’ the Boogie\, his 10th acoustic guitar recording on May 30\, 2014 followed by Jukebox Dreamin’ in December 2018.
