SUMMARY:Southside Aces: A Night in New Orleans at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, Southside Aces have been playing the repertoire of the Jazz Age greats and beyond. Here\, they play the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton and the Chicago joys of Louis Armstrong. The evocative compositions of the young Duke Ellington to the barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall. Even the early rock and roll of Fats Domino! Their belief in the contemporary vitality of New Orleans music can be heard in their eighth album\, 2022’s Minneapolis Bump. Here\, this album contains fifteen originals in the traditional style. The Aces will release two more albums in 2026\, including Les Oignons\, featuring the music of Sidney Bechet. You hear it all when you’re in front of the Aces. Moreover\, treat yourself to a century’s worth of New Orleans jazz. \nIn New Orleans\, the jazz tradition thrives off a wide array of styles. Here\, the Aces possess a diverse repertoire\, with a roll call that includes jazz giants. For example\, Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Hoagy Carmichael\, Duke Ellington\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Additionally\, Crescent City classics like “Bourbon Street Parade”\, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”\, and “St. James Infirmary”. Also\, they cover the funky rhythms of brass band powerhouses like “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Palm Court Strut”! \n“Some 1500 miles from New Orleans and the Mardi Gras\, and what do you think? It’s bouncing around the Mississippi River up here close to the Northern Star.” — Leigh Kamman\, The Jazz Image \n“The performers are virtuosi and flawlessly replicate the sound of classic New Orleans… The concert was wonderful and demonstrates the continued vitality of this sort of music.” — John Beckmann\, Prairie Uprising

SUMMARY:The New Standards at Dakota Jazz Club Night 2
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock. Here\, they blend the freedom of jazz with  the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nThe New Standards started in 2005 as an off-shoot project. Since then\, TNS has grown into a globe-spanning adventure\, filling theaters and clubs around the world. Additionally\, they have created several albums\, videos\, cartoons\, dance/theater projects\, and ancillary gewgaws that have charmed and delighted faithful fans. \nAll three are fans of great songwriting. However\, they sensed a lack of an interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards”. Thus\, they got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs from every era\, particularly post-1960s pop music. Familiar tunes in a stripped-down acoustic setting\, leaving room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz. Yet\, they never fully abandon the modest soul of pop and rock. \nAnother thing: though you may associate an acoustic tango version of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” with camp\, TNS is not a lounge or novelty act. One listen to their music reveals that they take their music-making as well as their jobs as entertainers seriously. \nAnd yet\, they are very funny.

SUMMARY:Brad Mehldau Trio at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano\, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path. Here\, he embodies the essence of jazz exploration\, classical romanticism and pop allure. Mehldau has garnered critical acclaim as a bandleader\, and major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny\, Renee Fleming\, and Joshua Redman. Furthermore\, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. His forays into melding musical idioms have seen brilliant reworkings of songs by contemporary songwriters. He covers The Beatles\, Cole Porter\, Radiohead\, Paul Simon\, Gershwin and Nick Drake\, among others. Also\, he has earned recognition for the ever-evolving breadth of his own significant catalogue of original compositions. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training\, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years”. (The New York Times) \nMehldau’s musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser. He cherishes the surprise and wonder occurring from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly\, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music\, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing\, the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays\, he listens to how ideas unwind\, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch\, whether it expresses itself in a beginning\, an end\, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau’s personality—the improviser and the formalist—play off each other. Thus\, the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

SUMMARY:American Roots Revue: Robert Robinson\, Tonia Hughes Kendrick\, Larry Long & JD Steele at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:The original American Roots Revue crew is back! Tonight\, experience Gospel\, R&B\, blues\, folk\, rock and all stops in between. Here\, the scintillating foursome will be backed by a superlative band led by Billy Steele from Sounds of Blackness (keyboards/vocals). Also\, Joe Savage (pedal steel)\, Yohannes Tona (bass)\, Greg Schutte (drums)\, and David Felly (guitar). \nRobert Robinson gives us reason to believe that the greatest music reaches every name and crosses every boundary. Thus\, Robinson has wowed audiences from the Pontiac Silverdome to South Korea. Here\, Robert is “God’s canary\,” with the ability to sing any song and yet remain true to his vision. \nTonia Hughes is a recent McKnight Fellow. Her passion for music often results in culturally diverse collaborations alongside some of Minnesota’s most accomplished musicians. Furthermore\, she has performed at Orchestra Hall\, Lincoln Center and at hundreds of venues throughout the Twin Cities. \nJ.D. Steele exploded onto the Minnesota music scene in the mid 1980’s along with Prince\, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Then\, Mr. Steele and his dynamic vocal siblings\, The Steeles\, garnered every major music award Minnesota has to offer.  \nBilly Steele performs\, writes\, and produces for the Grammy-winning ensemble Sounds of Blackness. Also\, Billy is the youngest of the legendary Steele family. Additionally\, he appears on soundtracks with artists such as Rod Stewart and Luther Vandross.  \nLarry Long is an American singer-songwriter who has made his life work the celebration of everyday heroes. Here\, author and historian Studs Terkel called Larry “a true American troubadour.” When America’s foremost folksinger\, Pete Seeger\, learned that Long was called the Pete Seeger of Minneapolis\, Seeger chuckled. “I’d be proud to be known as ‘the Larry Long of New York.’”

SUMMARY:Tommy Castro & The Painkillers at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Multiple award-winning guitarist\, vocalist\, and bandleader Tommy Castro is a California-based blues and rock powerhouse. Here\, he captivates audiences with his soul-drenched vocals\, searing guitar work\, and high-energy live shows. Furthermore\, as frontman of the telepathically tight and wildly raucous Tommy Castro & The Painkillers\, he’s released seventeen albums. Here\, they span a wide stylistic range—from horn-driven R&B and hot-blooded soul to gritty\, stripped-down rock and electric blues. \nWith his latest release\, 2025’s Closer To The Bone\, Castro returns to his roots. He delivers what he calls “a real blues record\, the way they would have made them back in the day.” Thus\, the album becomes Castro’s rawest and most direct blues effort to date.  \nEarly on\, Castro was inspired by icons like Elvin Bishop\, Taj Mahal\, and Mike Bloomfield. Then\, he absorbed everything from Ike & Tina Turner to John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy. There\, he developed a uniquely uplifting and soulful style rooted in blues\, R&B\, and funk. Castro formed the first Tommy Castro Band in 1992. \nCastro is one of the most decorated artists in contemporary blues\, winning ten Blues Music Awards. Furthermore\, these include four B.B. King Entertainer of the Year honors—the genre’s highest accolade. Here\, his no-frills\, 150-shows-a-year approach has earned him a fiercely loyal fanbase and praise from legends like Joe Bonamassa\, who says\, “Tommy has always been top of the heap among blues guitar players. He always puts on a great show.” \nWith Closer To The Bone\, Tommy Castro strips it all back to deliver an album brimming with grit\, fire\, and authenticity. “This is the deeper blues side of me\,” says Castro. “With these songs\, I am at my most authentic.”

SUMMARY:Isaiah Collier: Collier Plays Coltrane at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:One of today’s most exciting saxophonists celebrates John Coltrane’s centennial! \nIsaiah Collier is a musical virtuoso in the truest sense of the phrase. He began playing saxophone at age eleven\, and his intuitive proficiency earned him attention early on. Ever since\, his band Isaiah Collier and The Chosen Few has been turning ears. \nIn 2025 he was featured on NPR’s “Jazz Night in America”\, and graced the cover of Downbeat Magazine. Additionally\, Chicago Tribune named him 2024’s Jazz Artist of the Year. New York Times selected his album The Almighty as one of the Top Ten Jazz Recordings of 2024. Furthermore\, The New York Times 2024 Fall Arts Preview featured him. Downbeat selected him as one of twenty-five for the future in 2024’s Ninetieth Anniversary issue. Also\, he won the Rising Star Award in Downbeat Magazine’s critics poll for tenor saxophone (2023)\, and soprano saxophone (2024). Then\, he was named a Steve Jobs Fellow. \nThere’s a regal\, elegant manner to Isaiah’s stage presence: he’s over 6 feet tall\, thin\, deep brown\, with high cheekbones. When not playing\, he is patiently waiting. Not contemplating his next move\, but listening to the musicians who accompany him\, listening to their stories. Here\, he explains that he’s never really hearing himself\, he’s hearing others play: some people have fire\, others have air. \nIsaiah Coller’s sound is a dynamic flurry of metaphors\, yet he can hold back when necessary. Thus\, he plays his influences\, which he describes as a “sonic time machine; you can’t really put a time or destination on it.” As far as he where he plans to take his music\, Collier says\, “I reach backwards\, and forwards simultaneously when creating art and what is ahead of me is the past.”

SUMMARY:Al Di Meola at Dakota Jazz Club Night 2
DESCRIPTION:Al Di Meola is one of the top guitarists of our time. Here\, he has enjoyed a celebrated career that has spanned more than four decades. His fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation\, provocative lyrical melodies\, and sophisticated harmony are at the heart of his music. Among his myriad critical accolades are multiple Grammys and Grammy nominations. Additionally\, twelve awards from polls conducted by Guitar Player magazine\, which inducted Di Meola into its Gallery of Greats. \nA bona fide guitar hero and prolific composer\, Di Meola has created more than thirty albums as a leader. Furthermore\, he has collaborated on about a dozen others. These include fusion supergroup Return to Forever (with Chick Corea\, Stanley Clarke\, and Lenny White). Also\, the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio (featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía). Further\, the Rite of Strings trio (with Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty). Here\, his dazzling technique has made him a hero to fretboard fanatics. However\, the depth of Di Meola’s writing\, along with the soulfulness and inherent lyricism of his expressive playing\, have won him a worldwide fanbase beyond the guitar aficionado set.

SUMMARY:Pat Metheny at Dakota Jazz Club for Two Nights
DESCRIPTION:Pat Metheny was born in Lee’s Summit\, MO on August 12\, 1954 into a musical family. He started on trumpet at the age of eight\, then switched to guitar at age twelve. By fifteen\, he worked regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City\, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience. Then\, Metheny burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton\, the young player already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style. Here\, he blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility. Moreover\, this way of playing and improvising was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody\, swing\, and the blues. With his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation.  \nMetheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. He has performed with Steve Reich\, Ornette Coleman\, Herbie Hancock\, Jim Hall\, Milton Nascimento\, and David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar\, small ensembles\, electric and acoustic instruments\, large orchestras\, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project\, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre.  \nPat Metheny has won twenty Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories. Once\, he won seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame\, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included. In 2018 he was named an NEA Jazz Master\, the nation’s highest honor in jazz.

SUMMARY:Takuya Juroda at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Kobe-born\, Brooklyn-based trumpeter Takuya Kuroda is dedicated\, and his eighth studio record\, 2025’s Everyday\, is proof of that. Kuroda has not missed a beat since the release of 2022’s Midnight Crisp –– a record PopMatters called a “future classic”. Now\, the 45-year-old musician desires to achieve the “perfect blend of production and organic performance”. It’s why he continues to throw himself into his daily practice\, nearly thirty years into his musical life. \nEveryday builds on and dives ever deeper into the hip hop and neo-soul elements of his previous work. Here\, it is a deliciously rhythmic enterprise and a triumph of genre-blending modern jazz. Moreover\, Kuroda’s playing is sure-footed and pure –– whether on the horn\, synth\, or Rhodes. He virtuosically dances among infectious rhythms of his own creation.  \nKuroda’s twenty-one years in the United States have been fruitful. After studying composition at The New School\, he threw himself into work. There\, he played with DJ Premier’s Badder Band and Akoya Afrobeat and recorded as a sideman and bandleader. But as Kuroda himself says\, “the only way to make the music that I want to make is to work hard\, every day.” And so we have Everyday\, a title which reflects\, as Kuroda puts it\, “that simple message.” \nEveryday is hyperaware of a panoply of old ideas and a pantheon of old gods. However\, as Kuroda engages these tropes and personalities day in and day out\, he turns it all around in a style that’s undeniably cool and personal. As Pitchfork put it\, “Kuroda’s skill is not drawing influence from so many different forms\, it’s radiating joy in doing so.” It’s this sterling dedication that makes Takuya Kuroda and Everyday anything but commonplace.

SUMMARY:Ladysmith Black Mambazo at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people\, singing a message of peace\, love and harmony. With their 2024 release\, Soothe My Soul… Songs From Our South African Church\, the group puts their spin on gospel music. \nThe year 2025 marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of Joseph Shabalala forming Ladysmith Black Mambazo. His group conquered all of South Africa and would become a worldwide phenomenon. Further\, they won more Grammy Awards (five) and have received more nominations (nineteen) than any World music group. \nDuring the dark years of South African Apartheid\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo followed a path of peaceful protest. Here\, they did this through songs of hope and love. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990\, he said he listened to their music while in jail. Additionally\, he was inspired by their powerful message of peace. Thus\, when Mandela won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize\, he asked the group to join him at the ceremony. It was Mandela who called Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.” \nIn the mid-1980s\, American singer/songwriter Paul Simon famously visited South Africa. There\, he incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into his renowned Graceland album. This became a landmark recording\, considered seminal in introducing World music to mainstream audiences. Furthermore\, this brought the group to the attention of music lovers all over the world. \nAfter leading his group for over fifty years and approaching his seventy-fifth birthday\, Joseph Shabalala retired in 2014\, handing the leadership to his three sons\, Thulani\, Sibongiseni and Thamsanqa Shabalala.  \nLadysmith Black Mambazo is Thulani Shabalala\, Sibongiseni Shabalala\, Thamsanqa Shabalala\, Msizi Shabalala\, Albert Mazibuko\, Abednego Mazibuko\, Mfanafuthi Dlamini\, Pius Shezi and Sabelo Mthembu.

Moreover\, listeners can hear and feel its influence far beyond its native Minneapolis. \nIn the early ’00s\, Halloween\, Alaska took root as a semi-electronic diversion from its members’ primary rock/jazz projects. Here\, these included The Bad Plus\, 12 Rods\, Love-cars\, Happy Apple\, and more. A self-titled debut album made sufficient waves to inspire more recording\, more shows\, more expenditures\, more experimentation. Then\, the group has continued to expand its palette outward from a dedicated core of arty\, ambient rock. \n2018’s Le Centre reveals an audacious set from a group that embraced electronic elements with live instruments well before such practices became standard. Le Centre reveals Halloween\, Alaska as a warmly human outfit. Here\, lyrics and themes neither strive for earnestness nor dismiss it. \nThe band’s songs exude a range of commanding moods and textures. Here\, frenetic indie-prog with unlikely pinches of R&B or blue-eyed soul\, complemented by a Prince-inflected guitar solo. There\, a modernist mash-up of Spoon and a Steely Dan B-side. They traverse post-D’Angelo funk through the lens of hazy ’90s slow-core. Then\, their slow-burning dance floor balladry harkens to the band’s ambient ’00s origins. \nInitially\, Halloween\, Alaska started as a true side project\, an outlet for indulging electronic tones and an almost meditative restraint. Over the last two decades\, the group has adapted and endured with a collaborative\, experimental spirit. Here\, they confidently color outside the lines without betraying the ultimate beauty of the bigger picture.

SUMMARY:Yellowjackets at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Throughout their storied forty-three-year history\, the Yellowjackets have recorded twenty-six albums\, and received sixteen Grammy nominations\, winning two. Additionally\, they have performed countless sold-out tours\, and enjoyed worldwide critical acclaim and commercial success. \nThe Yellowjackets formed in the late 1970’s as the backup band for guitarist Robben Ford. They recorded their first album together in 1980. Shortly after that recording\, however\, Ford decided to part ways and go in a different musical direction. As a result\, the modern-day Yellowjackets were formed — a trio with Russell Ferrante\, Jimmy Haslip and Ricky Lawson. Since then\, and with the addition of Bob Mintzer\, the Yellowjackets have gained and maintained prominence as one of jazz’s most influential and loved groups. \nOver the years the band has undergone numerous lineup changes. Never failing to rise to the inevitable challenges of adjustment\, the Yellowjackets have maintained an extraordinarily high quality of musicianship. Moreover\, this superb musicianship is the rival of many but a surprise to no one who knows and appreciates the band and their music. \nThe most recent addition to the band adds Australian bass player Dane Alderson into the mix. With his exceptional rhythmic sensibility and natural disposition toward groove\, Dane brings a new energy to the band and adds a youthful approach to the music. \nTheir recent albums are a true testament to the longevity and resilience of a band who debuted over forty years ago. Consistently reinventing themselves through elevated instrumentation in their signature electro-acoustic soundscape\, the current lineup showcases a collective at their prime.

SUMMARY:Karrin Allyson at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Few American jazz singers have had as long and fruitful a relationship with Brazilian music as Karrin Allyson. Her early albums included such classics as “Corcovado” and “One Note Samba”. Then\, her 1999 recording From Paris to Rio split the difference between songs from those musical cities. 2008’s Imagina: Songs of Brazil raised the ante on Rio. Now\, here’s another all-Brazilian outing\, 2024’s A Kiss for Brazil\, featuring the great Bahian singer-guitarist Rosa Passos on two songs.  \nWhat’s remarkable about Allyson’s ongoing foray into these sounds is she has never recorded the same song twice. The song list for A Kiss for Brazil includes Luiz Bonfá’s “Manhã de Carnaval” and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave”. However\, you may wonder why it has taken her so long to get to those oft-performed gems. The answer\, for starters\, is that there’s a bottomless pool of great Brazilian songs to record. Also\, Allyson has engaged in many other pursuits as one of jazz’s most popular and wide-ranging vocalists.  \nNominated for five Grammys\, she has explored bop and blues\, pop and Great American standards\, and written her own songs. Her highly regarded 2001 album Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane beautifully rendered the songs on Trane’s 1963 classic. Her 2004 album\, Wild for You\, is a collection of singer-songwriter pop tunes— “my first love”. Here\, Allyson performs songs by Joni Mitchell\, Cat Stevens\, Carole King\, and Carly Simon. On 2015’s Many a New Day\, she paid tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein alongsode pianist Kenny Barron.  \nMore recently\, she starred in the ambitious 2019 concept recording\, Shoulder to Shoulder: Centennial Tribute to Women’s Suffrage. This was a collection of Suffragist Era songs (plus two of hers).n

SUMMARY:Travis Anderson Trio's "A Charlie Brown Chritmas" at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:This blazingly energetic trio takes on Vince Guaraldi‘s holiday classic\, A Charlie Brown Christmas. Here\, they play the timeless music of Vince Guaraldi\, including “Christmas Time Is Here“ and “Linus and Lucy.” \nWith energy and chops to burn\, The Travis Anderson Trio bring fresh interpretations to standards and more – from Chopin to Mario Bros – they swing like there’s no tomorrow while saluting the great trios of yesterday. \nTravis Anderson has been delighting audiences with his dazzling piano technique and inventive arrangements since 2003. Additionally\, he has taken his unique piano style all over the metro area and beyond. \nSteve Pikal is one of the most in-demand bassists in the region. Adept at many genres\, his joyous stage presence and buoyant playing add an exciting element to every show. \nVersatile\, dynamic\, and hard-swinging\, Nathan Norman is a first-call drummer in the Twin Cities. Also\, he has collaborated with many of the area’s finest artists\, including Bruce Henry\, Debbie Duncan\, Charmin Michelle\, and more. \nA Charlie Brown Christmas is the Emmy and Peabody award-winning story written by St. Paul’s own Charles M. Schulz. This classic has warmed the hearts of millions of fans since it first aired on television nearly sixty years ago. The Christmas special marked the first time Schulz’s classic characters made the jump from the newspaper page to animation. Moreover\, the soundtrack being provided by a jazz trio rather than full orchestra\, originally a budget-conscious decision\, proved to be an inspired choice. Here\, Guaraldi’s songs are as important to the show’s enduring success as the characters themselves.
