SUMMARY:Al Di Meola at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Al Di Meola is one of the top guitarists of our time. Here\, he has enjoyed a celebrated career that has spanned more than four decades. His fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation\, provocative lyrical melodies\, and sophisticated harmony are at the heart of his music. Among his myriad critical accolades are multiple Grammys and Grammy nominations. Additionally\, twelve awards from polls conducted by Guitar Player magazine\, which inducted Di Meola into its Gallery of Greats. \nA bona fide guitar hero and prolific composer\, Di Meola has created more than thirty albums as a leader. Furthermore\, he has collaborated on about a dozen others. These include fusion supergroup Return to Forever (with Chick Corea\, Stanley Clarke\, and Lenny White). Also\, the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio (featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía). Further\, the Rite of Strings trio (with Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty). Here\, his dazzling technique has made him a hero to fretboard fanatics. However\, the depth of Di Meola’s writing\, along with the soulfulness and inherent lyricism of his expressive playing\, have won him a worldwide fanbase beyond the guitar aficionado set.

SUMMARY:Pat Metheny at Dakota Jazz Club for Two Nights
DESCRIPTION:Pat Metheny was born in Lee’s Summit\, MO on August 12\, 1954 into a musical family. He started on trumpet at the age of eight\, then switched to guitar at age twelve. By fifteen\, he worked regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City\, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience. Then\, Metheny burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton\, the young player already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style. Here\, he blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility. Moreover\, this way of playing and improvising was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody\, swing\, and the blues. With his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation.  \nMetheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. He has performed with Steve Reich\, Ornette Coleman\, Herbie Hancock\, Jim Hall\, Milton Nascimento\, and David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar\, small ensembles\, electric and acoustic instruments\, large orchestras\, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project\, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre.  \nPat Metheny has won twenty Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories. Once\, he won seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame\, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included. In 2018 he was named an NEA Jazz Master\, the nation’s highest honor in jazz.

There\, he has twelve solo recordings in his catalog including the 2024 release\, Silent\, Listening. All About Jazz has remarked that “when it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz\, there are two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else”. Also\, New York Times simply calls him “a master who plays it his way”. \nThe Fred Hersch Trio has remained at the pinnacle of modern jazz\, venerated for embodying thrilling interplay and dynamic spontaneity. SUMMARY:Takuya Juroda at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Kobe-born\, Brooklyn-based trumpeter Takuya Kuroda is dedicated\, and his eighth studio record\, 2025’s Everyday\, is proof of that. Kuroda has not missed a beat since the release of 2022’s Midnight Crisp –– a record PopMatters called a “future classic”. Now\, the 45-year-old musician desires to achieve the “perfect blend of production and organic performance”. It’s why he continues to throw himself into his daily practice\, nearly thirty years into his musical life. \nEveryday builds on and dives ever deeper into the hip hop and neo-soul elements of his previous work. Here\, it is a deliciously rhythmic enterprise and a triumph of genre-blending modern jazz. Moreover\, Kuroda’s playing is sure-footed and pure –– whether on the horn\, synth\, or Rhodes. He virtuosically dances among infectious rhythms of his own creation.  \nKuroda’s twenty-one years in the United States have been fruitful. After studying composition at The New School\, he threw himself into work. There\, he played with DJ Premier’s Badder Band and Akoya Afrobeat and recorded as a sideman and bandleader. But as Kuroda himself says\, “the only way to make the music that I want to make is to work hard\, every day.” And so we have Everyday\, a title which reflects\, as Kuroda puts it\, “that simple message.” \nEveryday is hyperaware of a panoply of old ideas and a pantheon of old gods. However\, as Kuroda engages these tropes and personalities day in and day out\, he turns it all around in a style that’s undeniably cool and personal. As Pitchfork put it\, “Kuroda’s skill is not drawing influence from so many different forms\, it’s radiating joy in doing so.” It’s this sterling dedication that makes Takuya Kuroda and Everyday anything but commonplace.

SUMMARY:Ladysmith Black Mambazo at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people\, singing a message of peace\, love and harmony. With their 2024 release\, Soothe My Soul… Songs From Our South African Church\, the group puts their spin on gospel music. \nThe year 2025 marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of Joseph Shabalala forming Ladysmith Black Mambazo. His group conquered all of South Africa and would become a worldwide phenomenon. Further\, they won more Grammy Awards (five) and have received more nominations (nineteen) than any World music group. \nDuring the dark years of South African Apartheid\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo followed a path of peaceful protest. Here\, they did this through songs of hope and love. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990\, he said he listened to their music while in jail. Additionally\, he was inspired by their powerful message of peace. Thus\, when Mandela won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize\, he asked the group to join him at the ceremony. It was Mandela who called Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.” \nIn the mid-1980s\, American singer/songwriter Paul Simon famously visited South Africa. There\, he incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into his renowned Graceland album. This became a landmark recording\, considered seminal in introducing World music to mainstream audiences. Furthermore\, this brought the group to the attention of music lovers all over the world. \nAfter leading his group for over fifty years and approaching his seventy-fifth birthday\, Joseph Shabalala retired in 2014\, handing the leadership to his three sons\, Thulani\, Sibongiseni and Thamsanqa Shabalala.  \nLadysmith Black Mambazo is Thulani Shabalala\, Sibongiseni Shabalala\, Thamsanqa Shabalala\, Msizi Shabalala\, Albert Mazibuko\, Abednego Mazibuko\, Mfanafuthi Dlamini\, Pius Shezi and Sabelo Mthembu.

SUMMARY:Toronzo Cannon at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:“I want my songs to be heard and experienced\, not just listened to\,” says cliché-defying\, internationally beloved Chicago bluesman Toronzo Cannon. Cannon is on the cutting edge of today’s contemporary blues scene. Further\, critics hail him as one of the genre’s most creative artists. Further\, his lyrics are set ablaze by his passionate and focused guitar playing. Here\, Cannon sings of the heartbreak of lost love\, the humor of daily life\, and the pain of feeling invisible. I am a Black man in America. These are NOT protest songs. I try to create honest\, common sense understanding with my songs.” \nCannon has earned ten Blues Music Award nominations. Further\, as his fan base expands\, so do his friendships with famous musicians. Gary Clark\, Jr. declared\, “Toronzo is a beast. SUMMARY:Halloween\, Alaska: Farewell Performance at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Halloween\, Alaska’s churning\, meditative sound neither embodies youth\, naivety\, anger nor desperation. It’s a unique statement from a veteran band with a persistent cult following and a distinctive indie M.O. Moreover\, listeners can hear and feel its influence far beyond its native Minneapolis. \nIn the early ’00s\, Halloween\, Alaska took root as a semi-electronic diversion from its members’ primary rock/jazz projects. Here\, these included The Bad Plus\, 12 Rods\, Love-cars\, Happy Apple\, and more. A self-titled debut album made sufficient waves to inspire more recording\, more shows\, more expenditures\, more experimentation. Then\, the group has continued to expand its palette outward from a dedicated core of arty\, ambient rock. \n2018’s Le Centre reveals an audacious set from a group that embraced electronic elements with live instruments well before such practices became standard. Le Centre reveals Halloween\, Alaska as a warmly human outfit. Here\, lyrics and themes neither strive for earnestness nor dismiss it. \nThe band’s songs exude a range of commanding moods and textures. Here\, frenetic indie-prog with unlikely pinches of R&B or blue-eyed soul\, complemented by a Prince-inflected guitar solo. There\, a modernist mash-up of Spoon and a Steely Dan B-side. They traverse post-D’Angelo funk through the lens of hazy ’90s slow-core. Then\, their slow-burning dance floor balladry harkens to the band’s ambient ’00s origins. \nInitially\, Halloween\, Alaska started as a true side project\, an outlet for indulging electronic tones and an almost meditative restraint. Over the last two decades\, the group has adapted and endured with a collaborative\, experimental spirit. Here\, they confidently color outside the lines without betraying the ultimate beauty of the bigger picture.

SUMMARY:Yellowjackets at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Throughout their storied forty-three-year history\, the Yellowjackets have recorded twenty-six albums\, and received sixteen Grammy nominations\, winning two. Additionally\, they have performed countless sold-out tours\, and enjoyed worldwide critical acclaim and commercial success. \nThe Yellowjackets formed in the late 1970’s as the backup band for guitarist Robben Ford. They recorded their first album together in 1980. Shortly after that recording\, however\, Ford decided to part ways and go in a different musical direction. As a result\, the modern-day Yellowjackets were formed — a trio with Russell Ferrante\, Jimmy Haslip and Ricky Lawson. Since then\, and with the addition of Bob Mintzer\, the Yellowjackets have gained and maintained prominence as one of jazz’s most influential and loved groups. \nOver the years the band has undergone numerous lineup changes. Never failing to rise to the inevitable challenges of adjustment\, the Yellowjackets have maintained an extraordinarily high quality of musicianship. Moreover\, this superb musicianship is the rival of many but a surprise to no one who knows and appreciates the band and their music. \nThe most recent addition to the band adds Australian bass player Dane Alderson into the mix. With his exceptional rhythmic sensibility and natural disposition toward groove\, Dane brings a new energy to the band and adds a youthful approach to the music. \nTheir recent albums are a true testament to the longevity and resilience of a band who debuted over forty years ago. Consistently reinventing themselves through elevated instrumentation in their signature electro-acoustic soundscape\, the current lineup showcases a collective at their prime.

SUMMARY:Karrin Allyson at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Few American jazz singers have had as long and fruitful a relationship with Brazilian music as Karrin Allyson. Her early albums included such classics as “Corcovado” and “One Note Samba”. Then\, her 1999 recording From Paris to Rio split the difference between songs from those musical cities. 2008’s Imagina: Songs of Brazil raised the ante on Rio. Now\, here’s another all-Brazilian outing\, 2024’s A Kiss for Brazil\, featuring the great Bahian singer-guitarist Rosa Passos on two songs.  \nWhat’s remarkable about Allyson’s ongoing foray into these sounds is she has never recorded the same song twice. The song list for A Kiss for Brazil includes Luiz Bonfá’s “Manhã de Carnaval” and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave”. However\, you may wonder why it has taken her so long to get to those oft-performed gems. The answer\, for starters\, is that there’s a bottomless pool of great Brazilian songs to record. Also\, Allyson has engaged in many other pursuits as one of jazz’s most popular and wide-ranging vocalists.  \nNominated for five Grammys\, she has explored bop and blues\, pop and Great American standards\, and written her own songs. Her highly regarded 2001 album Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane beautifully rendered the songs on Trane’s 1963 classic. Her 2004 album\, Wild for You\, is a collection of singer-songwriter pop tunes— “my first love”. Here\, Allyson performs songs by Joni Mitchell\, Cat Stevens\, Carole King\, and Carly Simon. On 2015’s Many a New Day\, she paid tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein alongsode pianist Kenny Barron.  \nMore recently\, she starred in the ambitious 2019 concept recording\, Shoulder to Shoulder: Centennial Tribute to Women’s Suffrage. This was a collection of Suffragist Era songs (plus two of hers).n

DESCRIPTION:This blazingly energetic trio takes on Vince Guaraldi‘s holiday classic\, A Charlie Brown Christmas. Here\, they play the timeless music of Vince Guaraldi\, including “Christmas Time Is Here“ and “Linus and Lucy.” \nWith energy and chops to burn\, The Travis Anderson Trio bring fresh interpretations to standards and more – from Chopin to Mario Bros – they swing like there’s no tomorrow while saluting the great trios of yesterday. \nTravis Anderson has been delighting audiences with his dazzling piano technique and inventive arrangements since 2003. Additionally\, he has taken his unique piano style all over the metro area and beyond. \nSteve Pikal is one of the most in-demand bassists in the region. Adept at many genres\, his joyous stage presence and buoyant playing add an exciting element to every show. \nVersatile\, dynamic\, and hard-swinging\, Nathan Norman is a first-call drummer in the Twin Cities. Also\, he has collaborated with many of the area’s finest artists\, including Bruce Henry\, Debbie Duncan\, Charmin Michelle\, and more. \nA Charlie Brown Christmas is the Emmy and Peabody award-winning story written by St. Paul’s own Charles M. Schulz. This classic has warmed the hearts of millions of fans since it first aired on television nearly sixty years ago. The Christmas special marked the first time Schulz’s classic characters made the jump from the newspaper page to animation. Moreover\, the soundtrack being provided by a jazz trio rather than full orchestra\, originally a budget-conscious decision\, proved to be an inspired choice. Here\, Guaraldi’s songs are as important to the show’s enduring success as the characters themselves.

SUMMARY:The Klezmatics: Happy Joyous Hanukkah at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:This December\, The Klezmatics — the world’s most celebrated klezmer band — return with their beloved Happy Joyous Hanukkah Tour. As candles are lit across the country\, The Klezmatics honor both Jewish tradition and bold musical reinvention. \nFor nearly forty years\, The Klezmatics have been transforming klezmer from nostalgic memory into a living\, breathing\, revolutionary art form. And nowhere is that spirit more alive than in their legendary collaboration with Woody Guthrie. There\, his long-lost Hanukkah lyrics were brought to life in the band’s iconic 2006 album Happy Joyous Hanukkah. \nIn 2025\, that album will be reissued in a beautifully remastered vinyl edition\, just in time for the holiday season. Audiences will once again dance to Guthrie/Klezmatics favorites like “Hanuka Gelt\,” “Spin Dreydl Spin\,” and “Happy Joyous Hanuka”. Here\, the band brings the songs back to the stage — full of warmth\, humor\, and Yiddish soul. \nBut this year’s tour isn’t only about tradition — it’s also about what comes next. The Klezmatics will release their fourteenth studio album\, The New York Sessions\, in early 2026. Thus\, this Hanukkah tour will feature exclusive live premieres of brand-new material. These new songs continue the band’s legacy of addressing contemporary themes — from migration and solidarity to joy\, resistance\, and renewal. Moreover\, they explore these themes through the ecstatic power of Yiddish-rooted music. \nThe result is a Hanukkah concert like no other: a celebration of light in dark times. Here\, ancient stories meet new melodies\, and community is built through dance\, laughter\, and shared song. \nWhether you’ve been following The Klezmatics for decades or you’re lighting your first menorah\, this tour is for you.

SUMMARY:Christmas Dreaming with Stella Cole & the Laurels String Quartet at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Stella Cole is hitting the road this holiday season in support of her upcoming single “Merry Christmas\, Darling.” Here\, this is a timeless reimagining of the beloved Carpenters classic. Last year\, the “powerhouse rivaling Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney” (People) released her holiday EP Snow! \nSnow! presents Stella interpreting well-known holiday classics. For example\, she includes “White Christmas\,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas\,” and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”. Additionally\, Cole presents discoveries like “Christmas Dreaming” and “That’s What I Want for Christmas.” Grammy-winning arranger Alan Broadbent arranged Snow!\, which is sure to become a holiday classic. \nStella recently released her sophomore album It’s Magic. Broadbent also arranged this album\, which breathes new life into classic love songs. She recorded at New York’s legendary Power Station\, with the vision to find unconventional\, yet familiar songs. These include standards like “Fools Rush In” and iconic film themes like “As Time Goes By” (a favorite of Cole’s from Casablanca). Also\, Burt Bacharach’s main title theme from Alfie (1966)\, Cole’s dreamy interpretation of “Say It\,” and the tender “Till There Was You.” The latter became familiar through the 1957 Broadway musical The Music Man and later The Beatles.  \nWith a voice that bridges generations\, Stella Cole has cultivated over 1.7 million social media followers. She accomplishes this through her fresh interpretations of timeless songs by iconic artists\, including Judy Garland\, Frank Sinatra\, and Nat “King” Cole. Often described as a Laufey-meets-Bublé sensation\, Cole brings a fresh interpretation of classic repertoire to a new generation.

In 2024\, Boney became the first ever artist to score twenty Number One singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart. \nBut James has never been one to look backwards and Slow Burn\, which the artist produced\, marks several firsts. These begin with the album’s opening track\, “Arcadia”. Here\, the very first notes on the album are the acoustic bass playing of the legendary Marcus Miller. It’s one of the few times that Miller\, known for his electric bass guitar work\, has committed his standup bass playing to a recording. Furthermore\, it is the first time that James has incorporated an upright bass into his own music. \nNext is James’ intriguing interpretation of the classic “Butterfly\,” co-written by master keyboardist Herbie Hancock and Bennie Maupin. Then\, the track features Marcus Miller again as well as young lion Cory Henry’s inspired electric piano. “This beautiful melody got stuck in my head\,” explains James. “I have never covered a tune by a legend like Herbie before and I hope we did him justice.” \nRising star R&B vocalist October London is featured on the first single from the album\, “All I Want Is You”. James says\, “It’s one of the most exciting vocal collaborations I’ve ever recorded.”

SUMMARY:Alex Cuba at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:It’s a strange thing\, watching audiences sing along with Alex without speaking his native Spanish. But they do. They “la-la-la” their way from chorus to chorus\, caught up in his inescapable gravitational pull. His warm\, elastic vocals float above a sound essentially from everywhere. It’s an effortless mix of funk\, soul\, and pan-Latin textures\, and no matter where you’re from\, you can’t help it. You’re home.  \nHe discovered music’s power to mesmerize and transport you at an early age. “I used to skip meals\,” says Cuba\, speaking of the long days he spent locked in his room as a child in Artemisa\, Cuba\, mastering the bass. “My mother would have to remind me that I was human\, that I needed food. Music has always taken me away like that.” Today\, he carries audiences away with his performances in the same fashion\, from the Hollywood Bowl to Radio Music City Hall. There\, he has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Sheryl Crow and Juan Luis Guerra. He casts his spell as if genres weren’t a thing.  \nAt the heart of his ability to charm anything that breathes is Alex’s mastery of a deeper\, more important language. The dude speaks joy. And it doesn’t matter if it’s Tito Puente joy or Stevie Wonder joy; it’s contagious. It shines through songs he’s co-written with Nelly Furtado and Jason Mraz. It’s the north star of his compositions.  \nThis undeniable exuberance\, expressed with masterful musicianship\, has catapulted Alex to the highest levels of global critical acclaim. It led this fiercely independent artist to two Juno awards\, four Latin Grammys\, and a 2022 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album.

Also\, he reformed his swinging group\, formerly Combo 66\, to tour the music.  \nRising star Gerald Clayton is an obvious choice on piano\, an instrument central to the tunes. The connection between Scofield and drummer Bill Stewart strengthens as the decades pass. It was Stewart who introduced bassist Vicente Archer to the project eight years ago. Scofield will close 2025 with this band on tour.  \nScofield is a triple Grammy award winning artist with fan bases in many camps and over fifty recordings as leader. Here\, he has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop\, blues\, jazz-funk\, organ jazz\, acoustic chamber jazz\, electronically tinged groove music\, jam band style and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. SUMMARY:Keb' Mo' at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:It’s a little over 2\,000 miles from Compton to Nashville. Drop the needle on Keb’ Mo’s latest album\, 2022’s Good To Be\, and you can make the trip in under four minutes. \n“I’ve lived in Nashville for the last eleven years\,” says Keb’\, “but Compton has always been my home. Finding a way to connect those two places on this album was a powerful thing for me. It felt like something I needed to do.” \nGood To Be is a celebration of roots and resilience\, of growth and gratitude\, of hope and memory. Here\, the songs draw on country\, soul\, and blues to forge a sound that transcends genre and geography. Then\, he weaves together past and present into a heartwarming tapestry spanning more than forty years of sonic evolution. Though Keb’ worked with a wide variety of collaborators on the project\, it remains a deeply cohesive work. Additionally\, it is anchored by the five-time Grammy winner’s magnetic vocal delivery and relentless optimism.  \n“I believe that music has the power to heal\,” Keb’ explains\, “and I wanted this album to make people feel good.” \nFor Keb’ Mo’\, that journey began nearly half a century ago. Then\, he landed his first major gig in Papa John Creach’s band at the age of twenty-one. Over the next twenty years\, Keb’ would go on to establish himself as a respected guitarist\, songwriter\, and arranger. Though he recorded a one-off album in 1980 under his birth name\, Kevin Moore\, it wasn’t until 1994 that he would introduce the world to Keb’ Mo’ with the release of his widely acclaimed self-titled debut. Critics quickly took note of Keb’s modern\, genre-bending take on old school sounds.
