SUMMARY:Karrin Allyson at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Few American jazz singers have had as long and fruitful a relationship with Brazilian music as Karrin Allyson. Her early albums included such classics as “Corcovado” and “One Note Samba”. Then\, her 1999 recording From Paris to Rio split the difference between songs from those musical cities. 2008’s Imagina: Songs of Brazil raised the ante on Rio. Now\, here’s another all-Brazilian outing\, 2024’s A Kiss for Brazil\, featuring the great Bahian singer-guitarist Rosa Passos on two songs.  \nWhat’s remarkable about Allyson’s ongoing foray into these sounds is she has never recorded the same song twice. The song list for A Kiss for Brazil includes Luiz Bonfá’s “Manhã de Carnaval” and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave”. However\, you may wonder why it has taken her so long to get to those oft-performed gems. The answer\, for starters\, is that there’s a bottomless pool of great Brazilian songs to record. Also\, Allyson has engaged in many other pursuits as one of jazz’s most popular and wide-ranging vocalists.  \nNominated for five Grammys\, she has explored bop and blues\, pop and Great American standards\, and written her own songs. Her highly regarded 2001 album Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane beautifully rendered the songs on Trane’s 1963 classic. Her 2004 album\, Wild for You\, is a collection of singer-songwriter pop tunes— “my first love”. Here\, Allyson performs songs by Joni Mitchell\, Cat Stevens\, Carole King\, and Carly Simon. On 2015’s Many a New Day\, she paid tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein alongsode pianist Kenny Barron.  \nMore recently\, she starred in the ambitious 2019 concept recording\, Shoulder to Shoulder: Centennial Tribute to Women’s Suffrage. This was a collection of Suffragist Era songs (plus two of hers).n

SUMMARY:Travis Anderson Trio's "A Charlie Brown Chritmas" at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:This blazingly energetic trio takes on Vince Guaraldi‘s holiday classic\, A Charlie Brown Christmas. Here\, they play the timeless music of Vince Guaraldi\, including “Christmas Time Is Here“ and “Linus and Lucy.” \nWith energy and chops to burn\, The Travis Anderson Trio bring fresh interpretations to standards and more – from Chopin to Mario Bros – they swing like there’s no tomorrow while saluting the great trios of yesterday. \nTravis Anderson has been delighting audiences with his dazzling piano technique and inventive arrangements since 2003. Additionally\, he has taken his unique piano style all over the metro area and beyond. \nSteve Pikal is one of the most in-demand bassists in the region. Adept at many genres\, his joyous stage presence and buoyant playing add an exciting element to every show. \nVersatile\, dynamic\, and hard-swinging\, Nathan Norman is a first-call drummer in the Twin Cities. Also\, he has collaborated with many of the area’s finest artists\, including Bruce Henry\, Debbie Duncan\, Charmin Michelle\, and more. \nA Charlie Brown Christmas is the Emmy and Peabody award-winning story written by St. Paul’s own Charles M. Schulz. This classic has warmed the hearts of millions of fans since it first aired on television nearly sixty years ago. The Christmas special marked the first time Schulz’s classic characters made the jump from the newspaper page to animation. Moreover\, the soundtrack being provided by a jazz trio rather than full orchestra\, originally a budget-conscious decision\, proved to be an inspired choice. Here\, Guaraldi’s songs are as important to the show’s enduring success as the characters themselves.

SUMMARY:The Klezmatics: Happy Joyous Hanukkah at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:This December\, The Klezmatics — the world’s most celebrated klezmer band — return with their beloved Happy Joyous Hanukkah Tour. As candles are lit across the country\, The Klezmatics honor both Jewish tradition and bold musical reinvention. \nFor nearly forty years\, The Klezmatics have been transforming klezmer from nostalgic memory into a living\, breathing\, revolutionary art form. And nowhere is that spirit more alive than in their legendary collaboration with Woody Guthrie. There\, his long-lost Hanukkah lyrics were brought to life in the band’s iconic 2006 album Happy Joyous Hanukkah. \nIn 2025\, that album will be reissued in a beautifully remastered vinyl edition\, just in time for the holiday season. Audiences will once again dance to Guthrie/Klezmatics favorites like “Hanuka Gelt\,” “Spin Dreydl Spin\,” and “Happy Joyous Hanuka”. Here\, the band brings the songs back to the stage — full of warmth\, humor\, and Yiddish soul. \nBut this year’s tour isn’t only about tradition — it’s also about what comes next. The Klezmatics will release their fourteenth studio album\, The New York Sessions\, in early 2026. Thus\, this Hanukkah tour will feature exclusive live premieres of brand-new material. These new songs continue the band’s legacy of addressing contemporary themes — from migration and solidarity to joy\, resistance\, and renewal. Moreover\, they explore these themes through the ecstatic power of Yiddish-rooted music. \nThe result is a Hanukkah concert like no other: a celebration of light in dark times. Here\, ancient stories meet new melodies\, and community is built through dance\, laughter\, and shared song. \nWhether you’ve been following The Klezmatics for decades or you’re lighting your first menorah\, this tour is for you.

SUMMARY:Christmas Dreaming with Stella Cole & the Laurels String Quartet at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Stella Cole is hitting the road this holiday season in support of her upcoming single “Merry Christmas\, Darling.” Here\, this is a timeless reimagining of the beloved Carpenters classic. Last year\, the “powerhouse rivaling Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney” (People) released her holiday EP Snow! \nSnow! presents Stella interpreting well-known holiday classics. For example\, she includes “White Christmas\,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas\,” and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”. Additionally\, Cole presents discoveries like “Christmas Dreaming” and “That’s What I Want for Christmas.” Grammy-winning arranger Alan Broadbent arranged Snow!\, which is sure to become a holiday classic. \nStella recently released her sophomore album It’s Magic. Broadbent also arranged this album\, which breathes new life into classic love songs. She recorded at New York’s legendary Power Station\, with the vision to find unconventional\, yet familiar songs. These include standards like “Fools Rush In” and iconic film themes like “As Time Goes By” (a favorite of Cole’s from Casablanca). Also\, Burt Bacharach’s main title theme from Alfie (1966)\, Cole’s dreamy interpretation of “Say It\,” and the tender “Till There Was You.” The latter became familiar through the 1957 Broadway musical The Music Man and later The Beatles.  \nWith a voice that bridges generations\, Stella Cole has cultivated over 1.7 million social media followers. She accomplishes this through her fresh interpretations of timeless songs by iconic artists\, including Judy Garland\, Frank Sinatra\, and Nat “King” Cole. Often described as a Laufey-meets-Bublé sensation\, Cole brings a fresh interpretation of classic repertoire to a new generation.

SUMMARY:Boney James at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Boney James’s latest\, 2024’s Slow Burn is a new high point in a remarkable career that now spans more than three decades. He has earned a long list of accolades: four Grammy nominations and three NAACP Image Award nominations. Also\, a Soul Train Award for Best Jazz Album and four RIAA Gold Record certifications. In 2009\, Billboard named James one of the Top 3 Contemporary Jazz Artists of the decade. In 2024\, Boney became the first ever artist to score twenty Number One singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart. \nBut James has never been one to look backwards and Slow Burn\, which the artist produced\, marks several firsts. These begin with the album’s opening track\, “Arcadia”. Here\, the very first notes on the album are the acoustic bass playing of the legendary Marcus Miller. It’s one of the few times that Miller\, known for his electric bass guitar work\, has committed his standup bass playing to a recording. Furthermore\, it is the first time that James has incorporated an upright bass into his own music. \nNext is James’ intriguing interpretation of the classic “Butterfly\,” co-written by master keyboardist Herbie Hancock and Bennie Maupin. Then\, the track features Marcus Miller again as well as young lion Cory Henry’s inspired electric piano. “This beautiful melody got stuck in my head\,” explains James. “I have never covered a tune by a legend like Herbie before and I hope we did him justice.” \nRising star R&B vocalist October London is featured on the first single from the album\, “All I Want Is You”. SUMMARY:Alex Cuba at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:It’s a strange thing\, watching audiences sing along with Alex without speaking his native Spanish. But they do. They “la-la-la” their way from chorus to chorus\, caught up in his inescapable gravitational pull. His warm\, elastic vocals float above a sound essentially from everywhere. It’s an effortless mix of funk\, soul\, and pan-Latin textures\, and no matter where you’re from\, you can’t help it. You’re home.  \nHe discovered music’s power to mesmerize and transport you at an early age. “I used to skip meals\,” says Cuba\, speaking of the long days he spent locked in his room as a child in Artemisa\, Cuba\, mastering the bass. “My mother would have to remind me that I was human\, that I needed food. Music has always taken me away like that.” Today\, he carries audiences away with his performances in the same fashion\, from the Hollywood Bowl to Radio Music City Hall. There\, he has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Sheryl Crow and Juan Luis Guerra. He casts his spell as if genres weren’t a thing.  \nAt the heart of his ability to charm anything that breathes is Alex’s mastery of a deeper\, more important language. The dude speaks joy. And it doesn’t matter if it’s Tito Puente joy or Stevie Wonder joy; it’s contagious. It shines through songs he’s co-written with Nelly Furtado and Jason Mraz. It’s the north star of his compositions.  \nThis undeniable exuberance\, expressed with masterful musicianship\, has catapulted Alex to the highest levels of global critical acclaim. It led this fiercely independent artist to two Juno awards\, four Latin Grammys\, and a 2022 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album.

He is a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent\, rock-solid aesthetic identity. Looking to commemorate his seventy-third year\, Scofield has penned a collection of new compositions. Also\, he reformed his swinging group\, formerly Combo 66\, to tour the music.  \nRising star Gerald Clayton is an obvious choice on piano\, an instrument central to the tunes. The connection between Scofield and drummer Bill Stewart strengthens as the decades pass. It was Stewart who introduced bassist Vicente Archer to the project eight years ago. Scofield is thrilled with the group and in addition to the musical combustion\, especially enjoys the inter-generational quality. Here\, seventies\, fifties and forties are represented! Scofield will close 2025 with this band on tour.  \nScofield is a triple Grammy award winning artist with fan bases in many camps and over fifty recordings as leader. Here\, he has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop\, blues\, jazz-funk\, organ jazz\, acoustic chamber jazz\, electronically tinged groove music\, jam band style and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. SUMMARY:Keb' Mo' at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:It’s a little over 2\,000 miles from Compton to Nashville. Drop the needle on Keb’ Mo’s latest album\, 2022’s Good To Be\, and you can make the trip in under four minutes. \n“I’ve lived in Nashville for the last eleven years\,” says Keb’\, “but Compton has always been my home. Finding a way to connect those two places on this album was a powerful thing for me. It felt like something I needed to do.” \nGood To Be is a celebration of roots and resilience\, of growth and gratitude\, of hope and memory. Here\, the songs draw on country\, soul\, and blues to forge a sound that transcends genre and geography. Then\, he weaves together past and present into a heartwarming tapestry spanning more than forty years of sonic evolution. Though Keb’ worked with a wide variety of collaborators on the project\, it remains a deeply cohesive work. Additionally\, it is anchored by the five-time Grammy winner’s magnetic vocal delivery and relentless optimism.  \n“I believe that music has the power to heal\,” Keb’ explains\, “and I wanted this album to make people feel good.” \nFor Keb’ Mo’\, that journey began nearly half a century ago. Then\, he landed his first major gig in Papa John Creach’s band at the age of twenty-one. Over the next twenty years\, Keb’ would go on to establish himself as a respected guitarist\, songwriter\, and arranger. Though he recorded a one-off album in 1980 under his birth name\, Kevin Moore\, it wasn’t until 1994 that he would introduce the world to Keb’ Mo’ with the release of his widely acclaimed self-titled debut. Critics quickly took note of Keb’s modern\, genre-bending take on old school sounds.

SUMMARY:Hiromi’s Sonicwonder at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:In the process\, she’s earned a reputation as one of the most explosive live performers in jazz history. Furthermore\, she has become a global ambassador for the art form. Her many triumphs include an NPR Tiny Desk Concert that has racked up 2 million views. She also had the opportunity to represent her native Japan with a performance at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She won the 2024 Best Music Score for the animated feature film Blue Giant (Award of the Japanese Academy). Finally\, a Grammy award for a collaboration with fusion hero Stanley Clarke. Her artistry is — to borrow a descriptor The New Yorker favored — “dazzling.” \nShe released Sonicwonderland in 2023\, debuting perhaps the most expressive\, dynamic and versatile working band of her career. Featuring Hadrien Feraud on bass\, Gene Coye on drums and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill\, the group furthered Hiromi’s distinctive musical alchemy. Here\, she melds the spirit of classic jazz-rock fusion with classically rooted virtuosity\, entrancing funk\, pop flourishes and\, through O’Farrill’s trumpet\, acoustic jazz’s state of the art. \nThe album also did a remarkable job of capturing Hiromi’s mastery as a live entertainer. As The Guardian noted\, “Sonicwonderland is perhaps the closest thing to Hiromi’s onstage exuberance.” \nBut that was only the beginning. \nSonicwonder has continued to tour and work together consistently\, advancing their deep chemistry and fearless sense of interplay. The results can be heard on Hiromi’s new album\, 2025’s Out There. Here\, the group’s powerful rapport meets the pianist’s astonishing abilities as a composer on equal footing.

SUMMARY:Ron Sexsmith at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Ron Sexsmith is a three-time Juno award-winning singer songwriter from Ontario. The melodic songs of the 1960s drew Ron to music from an early age. There\, he heard them on the radio and his mom’s record collection. Further\, Buddy Holly and Elton John were his earliest musical heroes. He always loved to sing and started playing guitar at age fourteen. However\, he didn’t truly become a songwriter until he was twenty-one. \nRon moved his young family to Toronto to further pursue a career in music. There\, he worked as a courier by day\, while performing in the clubs by night. He formed the band Ron Sexsmith and The Uncool and started gaining attention from music label executives. But all passed on signing him. \nIn 1991 he released his first full-length album\, Grand Opera Lane. The Canadian music industry rejected the album\, although it found its way to Los Angeles. Then\, Ron signed his first music publishing deal followed by a recording contract. \nSexsmith released his self-titled label debut album in 1995. The melancholic tone and sparse acoustic arrangements of the album met with disapproval from his label. However\, an enthusiastic endorsement from Elvis Costello drew media attention and the album was declared a critical success. Rolling Stone wrote: “He just may be the most fluent balladeer to come along since Tim Hardin or Harry Nilsson.” \nHe has built a steadfast reputation with critics and with some of his own songwriting heroes. These include Elton John\, Ray Davies\, John Prine\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney. Additionally\, Sexsmith is loved for his characteristically honest\, sensitive\, and enduring approach to the songwriting craft.

SUMMARY:The Belfast Cowboys at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:The Belfast Cowboys is a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison. Entering their third decade\, they are adept at mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds. Led by veteran songwriter/guitarist Terry Walsh\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene. They have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002. \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands. He toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001 Terry hit upon the idea of forming a Van Morrison tribute band. Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \nMany musicians have played with the band\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established. It includes Dan Kowalke (guitar\, vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota (keyboards\, backing vocals). The horn section includes Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute). Bandleader Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers. Terry’s own originals have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, and New York’s Times Square. Once they opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people.

SUMMARY:Walter Trout\, Canned Heat Guitarist at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:All of us are broken. However\, no one is beyond repair. It’s a philosophy that Walter Trout has lived by during seven volatile decades at the heart of America’s blues-rock scene. The fabled bluesman’s latest album\, 2024’s Broken\, chronicles the bitter schisms of modern life but refuses to succumb to them. \nFor the last half-century\, no matter how rocky his path\, hope always lights the way. The beats of Trout’s unbelievable story are well-known: the traumatic childhood in Ocean City\, New Jersey. The audacious West Coast move in ’74\, and auspicious\, chaotic sideman shifts with John Lee Hooker and Big Mama Thornton. The raging addictions that somehow never stopped the boogie when he was with Canned Heat in the early-’80s. \nEven now\, some will point to Trout’s mid-’80s guitar pyrotechnics with John Mayall’s legendary Bluesbreakers as his career high point. But for far more fans\, the blood\, heart and soul of his solo career since 1989 is the main event. \nIt’s a peerless creative streak underlined by the guitarist’s regular triumphs at awards ceremonies. Trout is a perennial visitor to the Blues Music Awards\, SENA European Guitar Awards\, British Blues Awards\, and Blues Blast Music Awards. The iconic British DJ ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris spoke for millions when he mentioned Trout by name. He declared Trout “the world’s greatest rock guitarist” in his 2001 autobiography The Whispering Years.   \nTrout could mark time and dine out on those past glories if he were a less questing artist. He could relax and leave the polemics and calls-to-arms to a younger generation. But that’s not enough\, considers the still-hungry veteran. As the pandemic burnt out\, Trout got back to business. In short\, the career-long cycle of writing\, touring and resting is still as natural to him as breathing.

SUMMARY:Keyon Harrold at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning trumpeter\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and producer Keyon Harrold is touring in support of Grammy-nominated recording\, 2024’s Foreverland. This crossover album features a bevy of collaborators. These include British R&B vocalist Laura Mvula\, emerging young singer Malaya\, Common\, Robert Glasper and PJ Morton. \nHarrold first came into the international spotlight as the trumpet voice behind the Grammy-winning Don Cheadle film Miles Ahead. As a bandleader\, he creates a compelling new statement with a riveting mix of jazz\, Afrobeat\, soul\, spoken word\, hip-hop\, blues\, rock\, and American folk. Additionally\, as a soloist\, his distinctly warm trumpet sound simmers in the middle register. Here\, he creates drama without aggrandizing\, and mesmerizes live audiences with an emotionally charged concert presentation. Wynton Marsalis has stated “Keyon Harrold is the future of the trumpet”. \nIn addition to being one of the leading voices in jazz\, Harrold has collaborated with many hip-hop and pop artists. For example\, Snoop Dogg\, Jay Z\, Beyonce\, Rihanna\, Eminem\, Maxwell\, and Anthony Hamilton. Also\, rock legends Keith Richards and Jeff Beck. These experiences broadened his musical horizons beyond jazz to include funk\, Afrobeat\, R&B\, rock and roll\, and hip hop. \nHe is currently touring an ensemble that is making one of the strongest artistic statements of any musical group today. While rooted in jazz music\, the band freestyles and solos with authority and weaves the spectrum of African American music. Thus\, they create a sonic expression that can best be described as bop pop hip-hop jazz!

SUMMARY:Barrington Levy at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Barrington Levy is one of the great success stories of the 1980s. There\, he arrived on the dancehall scene and swiftly remodeled it in his own image. Although numerous DJs and vocalists would rise and fall during this decade\, Levy possessed staying power. Also\, he continued releasing massive hits well into the ’90s. \nLevy was born in 1964 in Clarendon\, Jamaica. There\, as a youngster\, Barrington Levy formed the Mighty Multitude with his cousin Everton Dacres. They started off playing the sound systems and cut their first single\, “My Black Girl\,” in 1977. At age fourteen\, Levy broke out on his own the next year. Then\, he recorded his debut solo single\, “A Long Time Since We Don’t Have No Love.” While the single didn’t have an impact\, the teen’s dancehall appearances became eagerly awaited events. \nIt was here where Levy met former singer-turned producer Junjo Lawes and New York-based producer Hyman “Jah Life” Wright. The pair took the youth into Channel One studio\, accompanied by the Roots Radics\, and recorded a clutch of cuts. The first releases were “Ah Yah We Deh\,” quickly followed by “Looking My Love\,” “Englishman\,” and “Wedding Ring Aside.” Success was immediate\, but it was the mighty “Collie Weed” that really cemented the teen’s hold on dancehall. Then\, “Shine Eye Girl” was a smash follow-up\, and the young Levy was now in great demand. A stream of singles followed. “Wicked Intention\,” “Jumpy Girl\,” a lovely version of Horace Andy’s “Skylarking\,” the humorous “Disco Music\,” “Reggae Music\,” and “Wicked Intention”. Levy joined forces with producer Alvin Ranglin for another sting of hits. “Never Tear My Love Apart\,” “Jah\,” “You Made Me So Happy\,” and “When You’re Young and in Love.”

SUMMARY:Tarbaby: Orrin Evans\, Eric Revis\, and Nasheet Waits at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:The three members of Tarbaby – pianist Orrin Evans\, bassist Eric Revis\, and drummer Nasheet Waits – share a long history together. There\, this dates to well before the formation of the trio. They share core beliefs about acknowledging the overarching tradition of the music while being true to one’s own story. Additionally\, they’re an ensemble of serious intentions and riotous humor\, intense spirit and fierce intellect\, passion and purpose. Here\, that all melds and collides in their provocative and risk-welcoming sound. \nThis eclectic power trio released two bold albums in 2024. You Think This America marks the first time Tarbaby has recorded an entire album strictly in piano trio format. Here\, this marks a first for a band whose career is marked by collaborations. They recorded the album live at New York’s Hunter College and mixed originals with wide-ranging covers. Further\, they play songs by Ornette Coleman\, David Murray\, Andrew Hill\, Sunny Murray\, and The Stylistics. \nA yet-to-be-titled studio release will follow later with several special guests. Joining the band are Philadelphia spoken word artist Ursula Rucker\, powerful saxophonist JD Allen\, and exploratory\, tightrope-walking saxophonist Bill McHenry. Also\, the pseudonymous “Prometheus Jenkins” (a few notes will suffice to identify the sax master behind the alias).
