SUMMARY:Savion Glover Presents: Project 9 at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“Savion is to tap what Charlie Parker is to jazz” – Herb Alpert\nSavion Glover brings his revolutionary Project 9 back to the venue he premiered it at\, in October 2024! Glover combines live jazz music and percussive movement for an expressive celebration of sound. Here\, Glover acts as lead dancer and drummer! At this performance\, he’ll push the boundaries of dance\, taking you on an entertaining journey inspired by mythological and ancestral codes of sound. \nSavion Glover began as a prodigious student of the great Honi Coles and the late Gregory Hines. It was Hines who called him “possibly the best tap dancer that ever lived.” Glover has been boldly breaking new ground for over a quarter century. \nGlover was only eleven when he made his Broadway debut. There\, he played the title character in 1984’s The Tap Dance Kid. Then\, he received his first Tony nomination at fifteen for 1989’s Black and Blue. Also that year\, he appeared alongside Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. in Tap. \nBy the turn of the 1990s Glover was moving freely between stage and screen. He appeared in Hines’ PBS special Gregory Hines’ Tap Dance in America. Also\, he was featured in over forty episodes of the iconic children’s series Sesame Street. Furthermore\, he received a 1992 Drama Desk nomination for Jelly’s Last Jam on Broadway. \nGlover built on the momentum from this award-winning celebration of Jelly Roll Morton. Then\, he became a cultural phenomenon at twenty-three when he co-conceived and starred in the wildly successful 1996 musical Bring in ‘Da Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk. This was a landmark production tracing the history of Black life in America through tap. The show earned Glover a Tony Award for Best Choreography. Bring in ‘Da Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk ran for three years at Broadway’s historic Ambassador Theatre\, totaling 1\,130 performances.

SUMMARY:Louisiana Calling at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:New frontiers fit nicely atop the boundary-breaking career of singer songwriter and slide guitar icon Sonny Landreth. He has performed live with Buddy Guy and John Hiatt in theaters and arenas around the United States. Also\, post-New Orleans Jazz Fest jamming on bayou rhythms with Oteil Burbridge and Johnny Vidacovich. Further\, he has recorded and played live with ukulele phenom Jake Shimabukuro at The Blue Note in Hawaii. Thus\, it has been a noteworthy couple of years for the two time Grammy nominee. And those are just his side projects. \nLandreth explains his continually expanding musical horizons. “One of the things I love about collaborations with other artists is the element of surprise. When the chemistry is there\, it is always inspiring to find new twists and turns that up the game creatively.” \nWhat if Americana actually encompassed ALL of North America? You’d have the Franco-Acadian inflections of Canada\, as best exemplified by the accordion. Then\, you’d have blues and jazz\, the U.S.’s most original art form. Also\, the lilting grace and fiery passion of the music of Mexico. You’d also have New Orleans’ premiere distillers of this continental musical mélange\, The Iguanas. \nTheir three-decade ride has taken them all over the map musically and geographically. However\, the inescapable patina of their hometown infuses every note they play. They have produced eight studio albums among countless tours and Jazz Fest appearances. They survived a flood that did its best to take their adopted city with it. Therefore\, it’s a testament to the band’s endurance that the same four guys that started playing in the early 1990s are still together.

SUMMARY:Morgan James at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Morgan James has a voice that needs to be heard. After her grandmother heard her sing\, the matriarch paid for James’ voice lessons\, positive that her granddaughter had talent. However\, despite the often-treacherous terrain of the music industry\, James has never tired in her quest. There\, she has tussled with unimaginative label executives\, covered and owned Beatles songs\, and cast a woman as Jesus. Through it all\, James has carved out an enviable career\, always on her own terms. \nJames has a particular taste for inserting herself into men’s spaces. Here\, she twists hyper-masculine songs to her will\, changing their meanings in the process. Furthermore\, she brings that feminist lens to the forefront in her most recent project\, 2025’s Soul Remains the Same. Moreover\, she reinterprets tracks from AC/DC\, Stone Temple Pilots\, and Pearl Jam. “Something I’ve always loved\, and I’ve done throughout my career\, is sing songs that are not just written by men\, but especially made for men\,” she says. “And make them my own.” \nHere\, Soul Remains the Same transforms testosterone-soaked ‘80s and ‘90s radio classics of her youth into poignant\, soulful\, deeply personal covers. “I don’t try to change something to be clever. I don’t want to change something that’s already great\,” James says. “But sometimes I’ll hear a song and think to myself\, ‘This would be amazing with horns\, or what would this sound like with a choir or a B3?’” James picked which tracks to cover after a road trip on which she and her husband belted along to some old favorites. Then\, she created sexy\, bold versions of cuts like Whitesnake’s “Is This Love”. Also\, a deliciously moody version of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight\, Tonight.”

SUMMARY:Tina Schlieske Sextet at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Tina Schlieske\, a Midwestern rock mainstay\, commands a dedicated and passionate following\, especially in her hometown of Minneapolis. She’s best known for fronting the band Tina and the B-Sides. Her inaugural jazz recording\, 2024’s The Good Life\, sees Schlieske embarking on a transformative jazz odyssey. Here\, this is her homage to the greats that have paved the way for voices like Tina’s to celebrate. Further\, she celebrates giants like Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. Much like the influential rockers she has emulated\, David Bowie\, Tina Turner\, Tina’s reverence for these giants shines through. \nA luminary in the Minneapolis rock and Americana music circuit\, Schlieske’s illustrious career spans over four decades. There\, she has garnered numerous accolades\, including a prestigious star adorning First Avenue’s legendary star wall. Also\, she is renowned for her impassioned vocal delivery and magnetic stage presence. Thus\, Schlieske’s pivot into the realm of jazz signifies a poignant milestone in her already illustrious career. Her transition into this new territory is a testament to her enduring artistic evolution and an exciting progression for her dedicated audience. \nSchlieske has long held an affinity for jazz\, but she left it unexplored until recent years. Here\, this stemmed from an unanticipated desire to delve into the allure of classic standards within the contemporary musical landscape. “There is a certain simplicity in these complicated songs\,” she reflects. “Singing jazz offers me the chance to push the boundaries of my vocal capabilities. It’s a whole new world compared to rock. Here\, the voice becomes another instrument. Maintaining the essence of the melody while infusing personal interpretation presents a thrilling challenge that I find truly exhilarating.”

SUMMARY:JD Simo & Luther Dickinson: Do the Rump! Tour at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“straight-up blues with a razor edge guitar slash.” – Americana Highways\nTwo of the most electrifying forces in modern roots music converge! Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars\, The Black Crowes) joins JD Simo (Chris Isaak\, Jack White\, Beyoncé\, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis). Here\, they unite as a soul-shaking trio with powerhouse drummer Adam Abrashoff. Their chemistry is deep\, their grooves are dirty\, and their shows are a masterclass in high-octane\, roots-infused blues.  \nLuther\, a four-time Grammy nominee\, is celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of North Mississippi Allstars and a brand-new album. Thus\, he is proving his commitment to pushing Hill Country blues forward. JD\, meanwhile\, has built a career on fearless reinvention. In addition to touring with Chris Isaak\, he’s a key creative on the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere. There\, he worked closely with both Bruce and director Scott Cooper\, supervised the music script\, and coached lead actor Jeremy Allen White (The Bear). Additionally\, he contributed heavily to the film’s score and soundtrack.  \nTheir collaborative album Do The Rump! has been making waves\, with lead single “Come On” hitting #1 on SiriusXM Bluesville. Furthermore\, the sound is raw\, hypnotic\, and thrillingly alive—equal parts Hill Country trance\, psych-soul\, and electrified jam.  \nThese trio shows are rare. The music is greasy. And this is your chance to feel it live.

SUMMARY:Cyrille Aimée at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Cyrille Aimée grew up in a multilingual household full of music where she danced every day. There\, her soundtrack featured the Afro-Caribbean sounds from her mother’s native Dominican Republic. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine\, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival. Often\, the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players. Thus\, this ignited a passion for jazz. \nMoving to New York City\, her talents quickly earned her a reputation among her peers as a matchless song interpreter. She worked with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York’s City Centre\, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself. Additionally\, she earned a 2019 Grammy nomination for her version of “Marry Me a Little”. \nAt the height of her New York success\, new horizons beckoned. Visiting New Orleans\, she fell in love with the energy and diversity of the city and made it her home. Then\, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman\, and together they created her latest album\, 2024’s A Fleur de Peau. \nThe album combines the depth and sophistication of jazz\, the immediacy of pop\, and the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean. Furthermore\, it’s more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before.

SUMMARY:The Belfast Cowboys at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:The Belfast Cowboys is a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison. Entering their third decade\, they are adept at mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds. Led by veteran songwriter/guitarist Terry Walsh\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene. They have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002. \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands. He toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001 Terry hit upon the idea of forming a Van Morrison tribute band. Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \nMany musicians have played with the band\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established. It includes Dan Kowalke (guitar\, vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota (keyboards\, backing vocals). The horn section includes Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute). Bandleader Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers. Terry’s own originals have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, and New York’s Times Square. Once they opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people.

SUMMARY:Los Lobos at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:It’s a matter of time. Fifty years to be exact. And in that time Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work\, a legacy of greatness. The numbers are staggering: 100+ gigs a year for five decades running\, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. And that’s just at the live shows. \nThey’ve also recorded seventeen studio albums\, seven live LPs\, three compilations\, two EPs\, two DVDs\, and contributed over forty guest appearances on their friends’ recordings. They have garnered five Grammys\, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction and the ALMA Ritchie Valens Pioneer Award. \nBut beyond all the hoopla and applause (and the source of it all\, really) is the tremendous heart. Rather\, hearts. Cinco corazones. Five blood brothers who have dedicated their off-stage time to helping others\, working for peace and justice. Further\, they’ve penned some of the most literate and important music of their time. They transform the hard cries from the East L.A. barrio into songs of hope\, tales of common folk finding ways to endure. \nThe young wolves were weaned on late-night radio’s soul\, R&B\, and doo-wop. Were cured through the African-American currents of the blues\, jazz\, and rock ‘n’ roll. An amalgam. As proud Chicanos\, their songs have always glistened with the distillation from their Mexican and Latin American roots. \nQuite simply\, they are one of the tightest\, one of the best\, one of the most prolific bands ever. And\, amazingly\, with the original founding members as the pack the entire time. Unprecedented. As their liner notes put it\, quite simply: “Los Lobos still are David Hidalgo\, Louie Pérez\, Jr.\, Cesar Rosas\, Conrad Lozano\, Steve Berlin.”

SUMMARY:R Carlos Nakai at the Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“Nakai is creating… a body of work that could be considered as modern as classical music.” – Focus Magazine\nR. Carlos Nakai is widely considered the world’s premier performer of the Native American flute. Also\, he is the only American Native performer performing in the Indigenous genre to achieve a Platinum Record. His Canyon Trilogy has sold over 1 million copies. Additionally\, Nakai has a successful career in many genres of music. He is an eleven-time Grammy nominee and serves as an effective ambassador in reaching new concert audiences. \nNakai stands as one of the most renowned and influential American Indian musicians of the modern era. He has spent decades weaving the ancient sounds of his heritage with contemporary musical forms. Thus\, he created a body of work that transcends genre and brings Indigenous traditions to audiences worldwide.  \nNakai grew up steeped in the stories\, songs\, and communal values of his ancestors. Living in the Southwest United States\, he experienced both the challenges and the beauty of life as an Indigenous person in a changing world. His family’s encouragement and his exposure to traditional ceremonies laid the foundation for his later artistic journey. He also gained an early appreciation for the importance of cultural preservation. Here\, this theme would become central to his life’s work. \nNakai approaches the Native American flute with both innovation and respect. Rather than simply replicating traditional songs\, he has expanded the instrument’s expressive possibilities. Furthermore\, he employs new fingering techniques\, extended melodies\, and harmonics. Here\, he blends the flute’s haunting tones with elements of jazz\, classical\, and world music. He also composes original works for flute integrating influences from his heritage with contemporary sensibilities. His music carries a universal message of peace\, healing\, and connection to the land.

SUMMARY:Emmett Cohen Trio at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen has emerged as one of his generation’s pivotal art figures. A recognized prodigy\, Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three. There\, his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality\, technique\, and concept. Downbeat observed that his “nimble touch\, measured stride and warm harmonic vocabulary indicate he’s above any convoluted technical showmanship.” In the same spirit\, Cohen has noted that playing jazz is “about communicating the deepest levels of humanity and individuality. It’s essentially about connections\,” both among musicians and with audiences. He leads his namesake ensemble\, the Emmet Cohen Trio\, and is a vibrant solo performer. Furthermore\, he is in constant demand as a sideman. Here\, he possesses a fluid technique\, an innovative tonal palette\, and an extensive repertoire\, Cohen plays with the command of a seasoned veteran and the passion of an artist fully devoted to his medium. \nEmmet Cohen is committed to the intergenerational transfer of artistic knowledge\, history\, and traditions. His signature undertaking is the Masters Legacy Series\, a celebratory set of recordings and interviews honoring legendary jazz musicians. He serves as both producer and pianist for each album in the series. The goal of this ongoing project is to provide musicians of multiple generations with a forum. Thus\, they transfer the unwritten folklore that is America’s unique musical idiom. Cohen has observed that playing jazz “is enriched immeasurably by connecting and studying with jazz masters\, forging backward to the very creation of the art form.” Volume one of the series features drummer Jimmy Cobb\, and volume two spotlights bassist Ron Carter. Future Masters Legacy Series releases will include Cohen’s recordings with Benny Golson\, Tootie Heath\, and George Coleman.

There’s no mistaking the majesty of her instrument\, nor the ferocity of her delivery.” \nOn Copeland’s latest album\, 2024’s Blame It On Eve\, the songs all hit hard. Here\, jaw-dropping performances instantly take hold and command repeated listening. “There’s serious business on the new album\,” Copeland says. “But there are a lot of smiles here too\, a lot of joyous moments. It’s my blues for sure but it’s the brighter side. Issues are always important to me\, but so is rocking\, dancing and just having fun. And that’s something we all can all agree on.”  \nWith Blame It On Eve\, Copeland embarks on what she calls “a vacation from all the heaviness.” It features twelve new songs that tackle subjects as important as a woman’s right to choose and climate change. However\, it also leaves space for Copeland to have fun and unwind. Here\, Copeland is inspired throughout.  \nForbes declared\, “Shemekia is fearless\, honest and hopeful…she holds back nothing as she delivers hard-hitting musical truths.” Further\, John Prine paid her a huge compliment when he said\, “She simply doesn’t sound like anybody else.” And none other than Copeland’s friend\, the legendary Mavis Staples\, announced\, “I am so happy Shemekia is delivering these songs that the world needs to hear. Her voice is strong and soulful\, and her message comes from her heart.”

SUMMARY:Tinsley Ellis: Labor of Love Tour at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“A potent set of fierce folk blues… joyous and triumphant” – Living Blues\n  \nAccording to Atlanta-based blues guitarist\, singer and songwriter Tinsley Ellis\, his new\, first-ever solo acoustic album\, 2024’s Naked Truth is both “a departure and an arrival.” Ellis has recorded and traveled the world for over four decades. There\, he delivers his feral\, guitar-fueled\, original electric blues-rock to ever-growing audiences at concert halls\, festivals\, and clubs. Naked Truth is steeped in the folk-blues traditions of Muddy Waters\, Skip James\, Son House\, Robert Johnson and Leo Kottke.  \nTo the casual fan\, this might seem to be a new direction. But for Ellis\, it’s an extension of his music\, as he taps into the raw essence of the blues. “This is a record I’ve always wanted to make and one that my longtime fans have been asking for.” Also\, he notes that he’s included an acoustic mini-set in his concert performances for years.  \nOn Naked Truth\, Ellis swaps his blistering\, guitar-fueled full-band workouts for equally passionate\, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. His famed guitar chops and musical creativity are on full display throughout the album’s twelve songs\, including nine originals.  \nEllis has brought his music to fans live in person to all fifty United States. Additionally\, he has performed in Canada\, across Europe\, Australia and South America. He’s earned the love and respect of many of his fellow musicians. Thus\, he shares stages with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram\, The Allman Brothers\, Warren Haynes\, Oliver Wood\, Buddy Guy\, the Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Gov’t Mule\, Widespread Panic\, and more. Also\, legends including Otis Rush\, James Cotton\, Gregg Allman\, Jimmy Buffett\, Son Seals\, Koko Taylor and Albert Collins. Furthermore\, mega-star guitarist Joe Bonamassa calls Ellis “a national treasure.”

SUMMARY:Marc Ribot: Hurry Red Telephone at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Marc Ribot\, guitar\nSebastian Steinberg\, bass (Soul Coughing)\nChad Taylor\, drums\nBriggan Krauss\, saxophone (Sexmob) \nMarc Ribot was never suited to play straight jazz. Ribot realized that in his 20s while trying to bop with veteran organist Jack McDuff. But Ribot soon found his calling—and the core of his mission\, really—both in the city’s melting pot and in its no-holds-barred No Wave scene. There\, he threw out the rules he was trying to ace and joined the Lounge Lizards. Then\, he accepted Tom Waits’ invitation to play on Rain Dogs. Ribot stopped trying to sound like the guitarist he was supposed to be and became\, instead\, the guitar player he was.  \nFor over four decades\, he has been an indispensable collaborator to the likes of Waits\, Robert Plant\, and John Zorn. Additionally\, so many others that his list of credits reads like a library’s card catalog. But Ribot has also been a great bandleader\, from his renegade bunch Ceramic Dog to his committed Latin band\, Los Cubanos Postizos.  \nTwenty years ago\, Ribot convened a glorious quartet\, Spiritual Unity\, to tackle the songbook of Albert Ayler. Then\, Roy Campbell died and Henry Grimes had to step away for health concerns. However\, Ribot and drummer Chad Taylor wanted to maintain the exploratory energy of that band with a new lineup. Ribot called on Sebastian Steinberg\, a collaborator and confidant since the ‘80s and an anchor of his great Shrek.  \nThe new group is Hurry Red Telephone. During the quartet’s 2025 tours\, guitarist Ava Mendoza added the combustible extra ingredient. Here\, her chemistry with Ribot seemed to push each of them to play a bit harder\, meaner\, wilder. For 2026\, saxophonist Briggan Krauss will step into that role with Hurry Red Telephone. Thus begins yet another chapter in Ribot’s ever-unfolding quest to find new ways to play.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day with Sophia Shorai & Tommy Barbella at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Sophia Shorai is a vocalist driven by an intuitive hunger for the “great song.” As a mainstay of Minneapolis music since 2010\, she possesses the rare\, chameleonic ability to inhabit any genre. Here\, she handles the complex architecture of the Great American Songbook with ease. Equally\, she evokes the raw grit of soul\, funk\, and R&B. \nHer precision was forged early. There\, she mimicked jazz legends from her father’s record collection and began classical training at age five. Shorai bypassed prestigious conservatories to dive straight into the Twin Cities’ live and commercial recording circuits. There\, she turned her voice into a versatile powerhouse. She has contributed to international films\, TV shows\, and major advertising campaigns since the late 1990s. \nWhile renowned for her mastery of the jazz idiom\, Shorai currently explores the lean\, emotive landscapes of contemporary soul and pop. Collaborating with producer Bryan Hanna\, she strips away the decorative to focus on the bone-deep impact of her original songwriting. Her new album\, TIME\, arrives in Spring 2026—a testament to a career spent proving she can sing anything\, and a soul that won’t settle for anything less than a classic. \nTommy Barbarella is one of the most active keyboard players in Minneapolis and beyond. His work with Prince’s New Power Generation (1991-96) put him on the map\, and his playing with regional funk/soul favorites Greazy Meal cemented his reputation as a go-to funk and pop keyboardist. Recently he has performed with Miley Cyrus\, Nick Jonas\, and a reunited NPG. \n“Sophia has everything a singer could want: soul\, versatility… a unique style\, and visceral love of music and performance. Whether she’s belting or crooning\, she breaks hearts.” Adam Levy\, guitarist\, singer/songwriter for The Honeydogs.

DESCRIPTION:Clayton Joseph Chenier is Creole music royalty. His father\, the legendary Clifton Chenier\, invented the style of music we know today as Zydeco. Moreover\, Clifton is the first Creole musician to be recognized with a Grammy Award. \nRaised in this indigenous American culture with its own distinctive language\, cuisine and music\, C.J. delivers soulful vocals along with jaw-dropping masterful accordion-driven rock\, Zydeco and blues. \nC.J. spent his childhood in the tough tenement housing projects of Port Arthur\, Texas. C.J. joined his father’s band on his twenty-first birthday. His first gig was playing for the opening of the now world-renowned Antone’s in Austin\, Texas. \nOn the road\, his father showed him how to front a world class touring band. He taught C.J. how to run the family business and how to develop his lifelong passion for music into a career. When Clifton died in 1987 his son\, C.J.\, adopted the Red Hot Louisiana Band. Moreover\, he recorded his debut album for the great American independent label Arhoolie Records. \nC.J. has also played with John Mayall\, The Gin Blossoms\, Ray Parker\, Jr.\, Joe Sample\, Jimmie Vaughan\, Sonny Landreth and Buckwheat Zydeco. Also\, The Jon Stewart Show and CNN have featured him. Additionally\, he has performed at numerous music festivals around the world. You may come in tired and beat up just from living in this world – but you will leave renewed and happy.  And that is the promise C.J. makes. “You can’t come to my show and stay unhappy. You’re going to break a smile before too long. This is happy music.”
