SUMMARY:Kandace Springs at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Pianist and singer Kandace Springs is one of the premier female artists of the jazz/soul genre. Her natural gifts for lyricism and soulfulness have earned her recognition worldwide. Further\, her late mentor Prince described her as having “a voice that could melt snow”.  \nThe Nashville native has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. Here\, she has made several national TV appearances\, and headlines major jazz festivals. Moreover\, she has collaborated with such luminaries as Christian McBride\, Roy Hargrove\, David Sanborn and Norah Jones. The Washington Post exclaims\, “Kandace Springs’s voice is undeniable. It’s one of those generational voices; from the first note\, you know it’s special.”  \nShe embodies the same spirit and soul of the great vocalists of the past on whose shoulders she stands. She simultaneously draws on jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae and multi-genre masters like Nina Simone and Roberta Flack. To that end\, Springs recently released an orchestral reimagining of Billie Holiday’s Lady in Satin. Kandace looks forward to releasing a new album in Spring 2026 and hitting the road backed by her ace all-female rhythm section.  \nKandace’s 2024 release\, Run Your Race\, was a tribute to her late father\, legendary Nashville soul singer Scat Springs. Here\, it is the first album of hers to feature almost all original songs. Every song was written by Kandace both solo and with some stellar collaborators. Prior to that in 2020\, Kandace released The Women Who Raised Me. There\, the album garnered five-star reviews from DownBeat and The New Yorker. Additionally\, it won the Deutscher JazzPreis for best vocal album of the year.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day with Sophia Shorai & Tommy Barbella at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Sophia Shorai is a vocalist driven by an intuitive hunger for the “great song.” As a mainstay of Minneapolis music since 2010\, she possesses the rare\, chameleonic ability to inhabit any genre. Here\, she handles the complex architecture of the Great American Songbook with ease. Equally\, she evokes the raw grit of soul\, funk\, and R&B. \nHer precision was forged early. There\, she mimicked jazz legends from her father’s record collection and began classical training at age five. Shorai bypassed prestigious conservatories to dive straight into the Twin Cities’ live and commercial recording circuits. There\, she turned her voice into a versatile powerhouse. She has contributed to international films\, TV shows\, and major advertising campaigns since the late 1990s. \nWhile renowned for her mastery of the jazz idiom\, Shorai currently explores the lean\, emotive landscapes of contemporary soul and pop. Collaborating with producer Bryan Hanna\, she strips away the decorative to focus on the bone-deep impact of her original songwriting. Her new album\, TIME\, arrives in Spring 2026—a testament to a career spent proving she can sing anything\, and a soul that won’t settle for anything less than a classic. \nTommy Barbarella is one of the most active keyboard players in Minneapolis and beyond. His work with Prince’s New Power Generation (1991-96) put him on the map\, and his playing with regional funk/soul favorites Greazy Meal cemented his reputation as a go-to funk and pop keyboardist. Recently he has performed with Miley Cyrus\, Nick Jonas\, and a reunited NPG. \n“Sophia has everything a singer could want: soul\, versatility… a unique style\, and visceral love of music and performance. Whether she’s belting or crooning\, she breaks hearts.” Adam Levy\, guitarist\, singer/songwriter for The Honeydogs.

SUMMARY:CJ Chenier & The Red Hot Louisiana Band at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Clayton Joseph Chenier is Creole music royalty. His father\, the legendary Clifton Chenier\, invented the style of music we know today as Zydeco. Moreover\, Clifton is the first Creole musician to be recognized with a Grammy Award. \nRaised in this indigenous American culture with its own distinctive language\, cuisine and music\, C.J. delivers soulful vocals along with jaw-dropping masterful accordion-driven rock\, Zydeco and blues. \nC.J. spent his childhood in the tough tenement housing projects of Port Arthur\, Texas. C.J. joined his father’s band on his twenty-first birthday. His first gig was playing for the opening of the now world-renowned Antone’s in Austin\, Texas. \nOn the road\, his father showed him how to front a world class touring band. He taught C.J. how to run the family business and how to develop his lifelong passion for music into a career. When Clifton died in 1987 his son\, C.J.\, adopted the Red Hot Louisiana Band. Moreover\, he recorded his debut album for the great American independent label Arhoolie Records. \nC.J. has also played with John Mayall\, The Gin Blossoms\, Ray Parker\, Jr.\, Joe Sample\, Jimmie Vaughan\, Sonny Landreth and Buckwheat Zydeco. Also\, The Jon Stewart Show and CNN have featured him. Additionally\, he has performed at numerous music festivals around the world. Further\, he is a consistent crowd pleaser for The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. \nAttending a C.J. Chenier show is a transformative experience. You may come in tired and beat up just from living in this world – but you will leave renewed and happy.  And that is the promise C.J. makes. “You can’t come to my show and stay unhappy. You’re going to break a smile before too long. This is happy music.”

Then\, as a teenager\, Matteo pursued his passion by enrolling in a music high school\, specializing in classical guitar. \nAfter he earned his high school diploma\, he founded the Snips trio\, gaining widespread acclaim for their fusion take on classic standards. SUMMARY:Meshell Ndegeocello at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Meshell Ndegeocello has survived the best and the worst of what a career in music has to offer. She eschewed genre for originality\, celebrity for longevity\, and musical trends for musical truths. Fans have come to expect the unexpected and follow her journey. Then\, she delves into soul\, R&B\, jazz\, hip-hop\, rock\, all bound by the search for love\, justice\, respect and resolution. Thus\, these sonic investigations have defied and redefined expectations for women\, for queer artists\, and for black music for over thirty years. Additionally\, she remains one of few women who write the music\, sing the songs\, and lead the band. \nA bass player above all else\, Meshell brings her warm\, fat\, and melodic groove to everything she does. She has earned a Grammy award among numerous nominations. Moreover\, she has played alongside the Rolling Stones\, Madonna\, Alanis Morrisette\, James Blood Ulmer\, and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Also\, Tony Allen\, John Medeski\, Billy Preston\, and Chaka Khan. As for her own bass-playing influences\, she credits Sting\, Jaco Pastorius\, Family Man Barrett\, and Stevie Wonder. Meshell is always grateful to share the stage and believes music is a fellowship. Here\, she looks to spread that gospel with every creation and collaboration.  \nNdegeocello says that she tries to create music that musicians enjoy playing. “I really love the musical interaction – the playing off of each other\,” she says. “It’s such a divine experience. Playing music is one of the few spaces where I feel genderless and raceless. And when the audience can dance\, move\, and experience transcendence while we are playing live\, it feels like I have purpose.”

Furthermore\, the ensemble continues to impress audiences at their live shows and with their album releases today. While Herbie Hancock has not regularly joined them during fifty years of recording and touring\, they always feel his influence. Here\, Headhunters co-leaders and best friends Mike Clark and Bill Summers carry forward the legacy with timeless\, paradigm-shifting classics. Hits like “Watermelon Man\,” “Chameleon\,” “Butterfly\,” “Sly” and “Palm Grease” are just a few examples. \nThe Headhunters’ latest recording\, 2025’s Live at Garcia’s Chicago\, is a reflection of the band’s fifty-year breadth\, depth and innovation. The album captures an electric live performance at the new state-of-the-art listening room with Clark and Summers at the helm. \nThe album’s A side opens with the band’s perennial jam “4 String Drive”. Then\, they play the 2024 original composition “The Stunt Man”. There\, tracks “Warrior Suite” and “Watermelon Man” root the album in the spirituality that “Baba Bill” has infused in The Headhunters since day one in 1973. Side B includes a modern funk rendition of Bob Marley’s classic “I Shot the Sheriff”. Then\, they perform covers of Thelonious Monk’s “Monk’s Dream” and Chick Corea’s “Humpty Dumpty”. Finally\, an extended drum and percussion conversation called “Headhunters Drums” rounds out the eight song LP. \nCatch the band on the road in 2026 featuring co-leaders Summers and Clark. There\, New Orleans veterans Chris Severin (bass)\, Clarence Johnson (saxophone) and Shea Pierre (keyboards) will join them.

SUMMARY:Cafe Accordian Orchestra with Prudence Johnson at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Dan Newton\, accordion and vocals\nEric Mohring\, mandolin\, fiddle and vocals\nBrian Barnes\, guitar and vocals\nErik Lillestol\, bass\nJoe Steinger\, percussion\nElizabeth Rowan\, percussion\nPrudence Johnson\, vocals \nDan Newton’s Café Accordion Orchestra (CAO) performs an eclectic mix full of French flair\, Latin heat and Bohemian attitude. The heart of the CAO repertoire is the romantic\, gypsy-influenced valse-musette. Then\, the group complements the musettes with swing\, ballads\, tangos\, cha-chas\, rumbas\, and cumbias to create a wonderfully varied show. Moreover\, they inject their music with good humor and expressive abandon.  \nCAO is led by Dan Newton on accordion and vocals\, with Eric Mohring on mandolin\, violin and vocals. Also\, Brian Barnes on guitar and vocals\, Erik Lillestol on bass and vocals\, and Joe Steinger on percussion. CAO has been delighting audiences and dancers alike since 1995.  \nOne might wonder how a group of musicians in Minnesota end up forming a band that plays French musette. Additionally\, hot club swing\, Tin Pan Alley\, Latin music and cinematic themes. There\, it all started with a tune composed in 1992 by Newton. Dan had been introduced to the Parisian sidewalk cafe accordion sound while teaching at a music camp. Then\, a friend commented that one of the tunes in particular sounded like “cafe accordion” music.  \nPrudence Johnson’s career has taken her from honky-tonks to Carnegie Hall\, from the theater stage to the Silver Screen\, from the Midwest to the Middle East. Also\, with her roots in folk and country music\, Prudence developed a passion for jazz.

SUMMARY:The Cookers at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Donald Harrison\, saxophone\nBilly Harper\, saxophone\nCecil McBee\, bass\nGeorge Cables\, piano\nEddie Henderson\, trumpet\nDavid Weiss\, trumpet\nBilly Hart\, drums \nExperience counts\, especially in jazz. The more time musicians spend interpreting tunes and interacting with others\, the more articulation an audience can expect. You can hear the fruits of such work in the expressive language The Cookers bring to the bandstand. This exciting all-star septet summons an aggressive mid ‘60s spirit with a potent collection of expansive post-bop originals. Additionally\, they have the requisite killer instincts and pyrotechnic playing expected of some of the heaviest hitters today. \nBilly Harper\, Cecil McBee\, George Cables\, Eddie Henderson\, and Billy Hart started in the heady era of the mid ‘60s. There\, that period found the dimensions of hard bop morphing from their original designs. Furthermore\, each artist helped facilitate the process as members of some of the most important bands of the era. Hart and Henderson were members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group. And\, Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s great ’60s quartet alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Billy Harper was part of Lee Morgan’s last group\, and also Max Roach’s Quartet and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Further\, George Cables was featured in groups led by Sonny Rollins\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper. \nDavid Weiss and Donald Harrison are from a more recent generation and are the youngest members of the band. There\, they gained experience performing with Art Blakey\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Charles Tolliver\, Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock.

SUMMARY:Chastity Brown at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Gospel and blues\, melodic sensibility\, and honest emotion… \nBased in Minnesota\, with roots in Tennessee\, Chastity Brown grew up surrounded by country and soul music. In the gospel church of her childhood\, she played saxophone and drums. Also\, she found her singing voice and a passion for music. NPR’s “Favorite Sessions\,” CMT\, American Songwriter\, the London Times and Paste Magazine have all featured her. \nLike so many artists who endured the uncertainty of the 2020 lockdown\, Chastity instinctively turned inward. At first\, she did this out of self-preservation\, and then the new songs kept coming and coming. Since finishing her last album\, 2017’s Silhouette Of Sirens\, she estimates she’s written nearly 100 new songs. Ten of these found their way onto her latest\, 2022’s Sing To The Walls. \nSing To The Walls is a sonically expansive album\, mining the roots of Americana\, folk\, and soul music. However\, Chastity delivers her stories in a style that feels remarkably timely\, modern\, and forward-thinking. Here\, these songs unfold with Chastity’s expressive voice and expansive melodies\, leading the listener through intertwining tendrils of atmospheric sounds. \nBetween writing sessions she’s been vibing to chilled-out\, forward thinking artists like Leon Bridges\, H.E.R.\, SZA\, and Daniel Caesar. Like them\, she expands beyond genre and her folk/roots history to encompass her appreciation of all Black American musical art forms. “I also want to poke at what the blues is\,” Chastity reflects. “It has a lot of stereotypes\, like it’s mostly only played by blue-eyed white guys now. But what about Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey? I feel so closely connected\, in a pure\, undeviating lineage\, to the heritage of being a Black\, queer blues woman.”

SUMMARY:Jarrod Lawson at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:It was in late 2022 that Jarrod Lawson had the biggest\, and most unexpected\, thrill of his music career. He had just received a glowing endorsement in print from Michelle Obama\, in an Entertainment Weekly interview. When asked who she was listening to\, after mentioning Beyonce\, added “There’s this young jazz\, blue-eyed soul kid Jarrod Lawson that I’m loving.” \nAt the time Jarrod was receiving major airplay in the U.S. and in Europe. Here\, this was largely due to his remake of the Isley Brothers Seventies classic “Footsteps In The Dark”. This followed his 2020 sophomore album Be the Change. That album made its mark immediately\, with entries at #1 on Amazon’s Jazz Albums chart and at #2 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. \nFor singer/songwriter/keyboardist Lawson\, the appreciation of his music in his native U.S. was particularly gratifying. His 2014 breakthrough had been primarily in Europe\, where in a whirlwind couple of years he played festival\, club and concert dates in fifteen countries. Additionally\, this included the North Sea Jazz Festival\, London Jazz Festival and the world-renowned Ronnie Scott’s Club. Furthermore\, he powered his way into the Dutch Top Forty Albums chart. \nHe has since performed around the world in Tokyo\, Beijing\, Melbourne and at Indonesia’s Java Jazz festival. Further\, in the U.S. he has performed at many of the leading jazz venues from New York to Seattle. \nThe album is a beautiful\, restrained\, dreamy mix of love songs\, irreverence and social commentary. Thus\, SoulTracks.com described the album as “a masterpiece”. Also\, they hailed it “an instant classic that would have fit just as comfortably in 1970 as it does in 2020”.

SUMMARY:Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Painted in the broadest of strokes\, the stories of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez may seem similar. Both started life in Havana\, discovered their gifts and passions for music and headed to the United States. There\, they melded the music of their homeland with a wide variety of influences\, each in their own deeply personal way. \nRodriguez was born into a musical family\, his father a popular singer and TV host. Martinez\, on the other hand\, honed his craft on the streets of Havana\, learning the deeply rooted percussion and vocal style of Afro-Cuban folkloric and religious music. \n“What makes this duo completely different is that I came from the folkloric side and Alfredo came from the classical side. You put those things together and you come out with an extraordinary and different sound.” – Pedrito Martinez \nPianist Alfredo Rodriguez’s sound embodies the collective sound of Miami\, blending Latin pop\, timba\, salsa\, bachata\, tango\, reggaeton\, and bolero. It’s a musical fusion that encompasses the diverse Latin community while celebrating individuality and fostering unity. It calls upon Rodriguez’s roots just as much as his newly learned experiences\, representing a new phase of life.  \nPedrito Martinez is a consummate master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and the batá drum. Since settling in New York in 1998\, Pedrito has recorded or performed with Paul Simon\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Paquito D’Rivera. He has also worked with Bruce Springsteen\, Ruben Blades\, Eddie Palmieri\, Dave Matthews\, and Sting. Moreover\, he has contributed to over seventy-five albums. \nFurthermore\, he is also the world’s first-call rumbero—playing\, singing\, and dancing with dozens of Cuban rumba groups. Pedrito was a founding member of the highly successful Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band Yerba Buena.

SUMMARY:Lucia Sarmiento at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:On her remarkable debut album\, 2025’s Escape\, Peruvian-American saxophonist/composer Lucia Sarmiento emerges as a rising star in modern jazz. Here\, she delivers playful yet intricate melodies. “When I play the saxophone\, I love that feeling of danger\,” says Sarmiento. With a powerful tenor sound and an effervescent personality\, she explains\, “I’m drawn to music filled with intensity and risk that captures every fiber of your being in the moment; that’s why I love jazz.” \nLucia has performed on sold-out stages with international pop stars Pitbull and Karol G. Additionally\, she has also headlined jazz festivals under her own name. Her fearless approach to music and her commitment to crafting bold\, textured compositions make her an exciting new jazz voice. \n“Minneapolis raised me musically\,” she reflects. “It’s a smaller city compared to LA or NYC\, but the music scene is vibrant\, steeped in the legacy of Prince. I began performing with Prince’s long-time collaborators and Weather Report’s legendary drummer Eric Gravatt right out of college. I got to explore every genre from Minneapolis funk to brass band\, and from Motown to free jazz. What was really important was that I came to develop my own sound. At first\, it wasn’t easy to keep up with the loud drums\, distorted guitars and very experienced funk players\, so I spent lots of time working on my sound and time. I also admire how Michael Brecker\, Bob Mintzer\, and Chris Potter play with so much strength and a sense of urgency—that’s how I want to play.” \nIn recent years\, Lucia has gained a social media following of over 100k+ people. Also\, she has released educational videos in Spanish and English that provide a global perspective on jazz and saxophone.

SUMMARY:Preener's Eve with The New Standards at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock. Here\, they blend the freedom of jazz with  the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nThe New Standards started in 2005 as an off-shoot project. Since then\, TNS has grown into a globe-spanning adventure\, filling theaters and clubs around the world. Additionally\, they have created several albums\, videos\, cartoons\, dance/theater projects\, and ancillary gewgaws that have charmed and delighted faithful fans. \nAll three are fans of great songwriting. However\, they sensed a lack of an interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards”. Thus\, they got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs from every era\, particularly post-1960s pop music. Familiar tunes in a stripped-down acoustic setting\, leaving room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz. Yet\, they never fully abandon the modest soul of pop and rock. \nAnother thing: though you may associate an acoustic tango version of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” with camp\, TNS is not a lounge or novelty act. One listen to their music reveals that they take their music-making as well as their jobs as entertainers seriously. \nAnd yet\, they are very funny.

SUMMARY:Preservation Hall Jazz Band Presents: A Creole Christmas at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the season as the incomparable Preservation Hall Jazz Band takes the stage with Creole Christmas. This memorable performance will feature New Orleans classics as well as beloved holiday selections with a twist. Founded in 1963\, the band takes its name from Preservation Hall\, the humble but historic French Quarter music venue. There\, Preservation Hall is dedicated to keeping the past and future of jazz alive. \nThroughout its history\, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge. Further\, they mingle\, resurface\, and are transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Here\, they have held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 60 years. Moreover\, they carry it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrant\, living history.  \nPHJB marches that tradition forward by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots. They look back to the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane. Then\, they look forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport. They have shared the stage with legends like Stevie Wonder\, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead. Also\, modern giants The Foo Fighters\, My Morning Jacket\, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.

SUMMARY:Joshua Redman Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists working today. Joshua was born in Berkeley\, California\, and he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of music (jazz\, classical\, rock\, soul\, Indian\, Indonesian\, Middle-Eastern\, African). Also\, a wide range of instruments (recorder\, piano\, guitar\, gatham\, gamelan). Then\, Redman began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to the tenor saxophone one year later. \nJohn Coltrane\, Ornette Coleman\, Cannonball Adderley and his father\, Dewey Redman influenced Redman early on. Also\, The Beatles\, Aretha Franklin\, the Temptations\, Earth\, Wind and Fire\, Prince\, The Police and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music. Joshua loved playing saxophone and was a member of the award-winning Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble and Combo from 1983-86. However\, he always put academics first\, and he never seriously considered becoming a professional musician. \nIn 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude\, with a B.A. in Social Studies. He had already been accepted by Yale Law School\, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. Then\, Redman won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition\, propelling him to near-certain stardom. \nOver the past three decades\, the saxophonist\, composer\, and bandleader has consistently demonstrated how to honor music’s verities while expanding its reach in contemporary settings. Redman’s latest\, 2025’s Words Fall Short\, is an organic next step. Thus\, inspiring new collaborators bring this new collection of previously unheard originals to life.

SUMMARY:Sam Grisman Project
DESCRIPTION:A Note From Sam: “The music that my father David Grisman and his close friend\, Jerry Garcia\, made in the early 1990s (in the house that I grew up in) is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded\, it also triggers my oldest and fondest musical memories. What I find most inspiring about this material is their camaraderie. Their love and joy for the music simply oozes out of each recording. It is also impressive how deeply they get beneath their favorite songs. Whether they are originals\, covers\, or traditional/old-time tunes\, the material was curated expertly. \n“My goal in starting Sam Grisman Project is to build a platform for my friends and me to showcase our genuine passion and appreciation for the legacy of Dawg and Jerry’s music. By playing some of their beloved repertoires and sharing the original music that our own collective has to offer\, we will also show the impact that this music has had on our own individual musical voices. Ultimately\, there is nothing that makes me happier than playing great songs with my best friends. My hope is to share that happiness with audiences all over!”
