SUMMARY:Chastity Brown at Dakota Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Gospel and blues\, melodic sensibility\, and honest emotion… \nBased in Minnesota\, with roots in Tennessee\, Chastity Brown grew up surrounded by country and soul music. In the gospel church of her childhood\, she played saxophone and drums. Also\, she found her singing voice and a passion for music. NPR’s “Favorite Sessions\,” CMT\, American Songwriter\, the London Times and Paste Magazine have all featured her. \nLike so many artists who endured the uncertainty of the 2020 lockdown\, Chastity instinctively turned inward. At first\, she did this out of self-preservation\, and then the new songs kept coming and coming. Since finishing her last album\, 2017’s Silhouette Of Sirens\, she estimates she’s written nearly 100 new songs. Ten of these found their way onto her latest\, 2022’s Sing To The Walls. \nSing To The Walls is a sonically expansive album\, mining the roots of Americana\, folk\, and soul music. However\, Chastity delivers her stories in a style that feels remarkably timely\, modern\, and forward-thinking. Here\, these songs unfold with Chastity’s expressive voice and expansive melodies\, leading the listener through intertwining tendrils of atmospheric sounds. \nBetween writing sessions she’s been vibing to chilled-out\, forward thinking artists like Leon Bridges\, H.E.R.\, SZA\, and Daniel Caesar. Like them\, she expands beyond genre and her folk/roots history to encompass her appreciation of all Black American musical art forms. “I also want to poke at what the blues is\,” Chastity reflects. “It has a lot of stereotypes\, like it’s mostly only played by blue-eyed white guys now. But what about Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey? I feel so closely connected\, in a pure\, undeviating lineage\, to the heritage of being a Black\, queer blues woman.”

SUMMARY:Jarrod Lawson at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:It was in late 2022 that Jarrod Lawson had the biggest\, and most unexpected\, thrill of his music career. He had just received a glowing endorsement in print from Michelle Obama\, in an Entertainment Weekly interview. When asked who she was listening to\, after mentioning Beyonce\, added “There’s this young jazz\, blue-eyed soul kid Jarrod Lawson that I’m loving.” \nAt the time Jarrod was receiving major airplay in the U.S. and in Europe. Here\, this was largely due to his remake of the Isley Brothers Seventies classic “Footsteps In The Dark”. This followed his 2020 sophomore album Be the Change. That album made its mark immediately\, with entries at #1 on Amazon’s Jazz Albums chart and at #2 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. \nFor singer/songwriter/keyboardist Lawson\, the appreciation of his music in his native U.S. was particularly gratifying. His 2014 breakthrough had been primarily in Europe\, where in a whirlwind couple of years he played festival\, club and concert dates in fifteen countries. Additionally\, this included the North Sea Jazz Festival\, London Jazz Festival and the world-renowned Ronnie Scott’s Club. Furthermore\, he powered his way into the Dutch Top Forty Albums chart. \nHe has since performed around the world in Tokyo\, Beijing\, Melbourne and at Indonesia’s Java Jazz festival. Further\, in the U.S. he has performed at many of the leading jazz venues from New York to Seattle. \nThe album is a beautiful\, restrained\, dreamy mix of love songs\, irreverence and social commentary. Thus\, SoulTracks.com described the album as “a masterpiece”. Also\, they hailed it “an instant classic that would have fit just as comfortably in 1970 as it does in 2020”.

SUMMARY:Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Painted in the broadest of strokes\, the stories of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez may seem similar. Both started life in Havana\, discovered their gifts and passions for music and headed to the United States. There\, they melded the music of their homeland with a wide variety of influences\, each in their own deeply personal way. \nRodriguez was born into a musical family\, his father a popular singer and TV host. Martinez\, on the other hand\, honed his craft on the streets of Havana\, learning the deeply rooted percussion and vocal style of Afro-Cuban folkloric and religious music. \n“What makes this duo completely different is that I came from the folkloric side and Alfredo came from the classical side. You put those things together and you come out with an extraordinary and different sound.” – Pedrito Martinez \nPianist Alfredo Rodriguez’s sound embodies the collective sound of Miami\, blending Latin pop\, timba\, salsa\, bachata\, tango\, reggaeton\, and bolero. It’s a musical fusion that encompasses the diverse Latin community while celebrating individuality and fostering unity. It calls upon Rodriguez’s roots just as much as his newly learned experiences\, representing a new phase of life.  \nPedrito Martinez is a consummate master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and the batá drum. Since settling in New York in 1998\, Pedrito has recorded or performed with Paul Simon\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Paquito D’Rivera. He has also worked with Bruce Springsteen\, Ruben Blades\, Eddie Palmieri\, Dave Matthews\, and Sting. Moreover\, he has contributed to over seventy-five albums. \nFurthermore\, he is also the world’s first-call rumbero—playing\, singing\, and dancing with dozens of Cuban rumba groups. Pedrito was a founding member of the highly successful Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band Yerba Buena.

SUMMARY:Lucia Sarmiento at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:On her remarkable debut album\, 2025’s Escape\, Peruvian-American saxophonist/composer Lucia Sarmiento emerges as a rising star in modern jazz. Here\, she delivers playful yet intricate melodies. “When I play the saxophone\, I love that feeling of danger\,” says Sarmiento. With a powerful tenor sound and an effervescent personality\, she explains\, “I’m drawn to music filled with intensity and risk that captures every fiber of your being in the moment; that’s why I love jazz.” \nLucia has performed on sold-out stages with international pop stars Pitbull and Karol G. Additionally\, she has also headlined jazz festivals under her own name. Her fearless approach to music and her commitment to crafting bold\, textured compositions make her an exciting new jazz voice. \n“Minneapolis raised me musically\,” she reflects. “It’s a smaller city compared to LA or NYC\, but the music scene is vibrant\, steeped in the legacy of Prince. I began performing with Prince’s long-time collaborators and Weather Report’s legendary drummer Eric Gravatt right out of college. I got to explore every genre from Minneapolis funk to brass band\, and from Motown to free jazz. What was really important was that I came to develop my own sound. At first\, it wasn’t easy to keep up with the loud drums\, distorted guitars and very experienced funk players\, so I spent lots of time working on my sound and time. I also admire how Michael Brecker\, Bob Mintzer\, and Chris Potter play with so much strength and a sense of urgency—that’s how I want to play.” \nIn recent years\, Lucia has gained a social media following of over 100k+ people. Also\, she has released educational videos in Spanish and English that provide a global perspective on jazz and saxophone.

SUMMARY:Preener's Eve with The New Standards at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock. Here\, they blend the freedom of jazz with  the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nThe New Standards started in 2005 as an off-shoot project. Since then\, TNS has grown into a globe-spanning adventure\, filling theaters and clubs around the world. Additionally\, they have created several albums\, videos\, cartoons\, dance/theater projects\, and ancillary gewgaws that have charmed and delighted faithful fans. \nAll three are fans of great songwriting. However\, they sensed a lack of an interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards”. Thus\, they got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs from every era\, particularly post-1960s pop music. Familiar tunes in a stripped-down acoustic setting\, leaving room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz. Yet\, they never fully abandon the modest soul of pop and rock. \nAnother thing: though you may associate an acoustic tango version of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” with camp\, TNS is not a lounge or novelty act. One listen to their music reveals that they take their music-making as well as their jobs as entertainers seriously. \nAnd yet\, they are very funny.

SUMMARY:Preservation Hall Jazz Band Presents: A Creole Christmas at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the season as the incomparable Preservation Hall Jazz Band takes the stage with Creole Christmas. This memorable performance will feature New Orleans classics as well as beloved holiday selections with a twist. Founded in 1963\, the band takes its name from Preservation Hall\, the humble but historic French Quarter music venue. There\, Preservation Hall is dedicated to keeping the past and future of jazz alive. \nThroughout its history\, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge. Further\, they mingle\, resurface\, and are transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Here\, they have held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 60 years. Moreover\, they carry it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrant\, living history.  \nPHJB marches that tradition forward by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots. They look back to the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane. Then\, they look forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport. They have shared the stage with legends like Stevie Wonder\, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead. Also\, modern giants The Foo Fighters\, My Morning Jacket\, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.

James combines the classic jazz-crooner elegance of Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole with the earthy sophistication of soul legends Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. Further\, James breathes new life into much-loved holiday classics such as “The Christmas Song”\, “White Christmas” and “Let it Snow”. Moreover\, the show will feature new compositions by James and his partner Talia Billig. In addition to showcasing his crooner chops\, the 50 Shades Darker singer explores his jazz side. The show includes a joyful rendition of John Coltrane’s “My Favorite Things.” \nA jazz artist for the hip-hop generation\, James artfully blurs the lines between traditional and contemporary jazz\, hip-hop\, soul\, funk\, pop and rock. Also\, he has released eleven critically acclaimed albums in as many years. Further\, James is the recipient of both the Edison Award and L’Académie du Jazz Grand Prix. He has collaborated with many notable artists like Flying Lotus\, Robert Glasper\, Lalah Hathaway\, Ledisi\, Aloe Blacc and Jason Moran. \nJahari Stampley is a Chicago-born pianist who began playing the piano at the age of fourteen. Within two years of exploring the instrument\, he began winning various competitions. Then\, by the age of eighteen\, he became recognized and followed by many world-renowned musicians. These include Yebba Smith\, Jill Scott\, Robert Glasper\, Cory Henry\, Jacob Collier\, Stanley Clarke\, and Derrick Hodge\, among others. Additionally\, Jahari has toured with Stanley Clarke and is featured on Derrick Hodge’s Color of Noise album.

DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, Southside Aces have been playing the repertoire of the Jazz Age greats and beyond. Here\, they play the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton and the Chicago joys of Louis Armstrong. The evocative compositions of the young Duke Ellington to the barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall. Even the early rock and roll of Fats Domino! Their belief in the contemporary vitality of New Orleans music can be heard in their eighth album\, 2022’s Minneapolis Bump. Here\, this album contains fifteen originals in the traditional style. The Aces will release two more albums in 2026\, including Les Oignons\, featuring the music of Sidney Bechet. You hear it all when you’re in front of the Aces. Moreover\, treat yourself to a century’s worth of New Orleans jazz. \nIn New Orleans\, the jazz tradition thrives off a wide array of styles. Here\, the Aces possess a diverse repertoire\, with a roll call that includes jazz giants. For example\, Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Hoagy Carmichael\, Duke Ellington\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Additionally\, Crescent City classics like “Bourbon Street Parade”\, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”\, and “St. James Infirmary”. Also\, they cover the funky rhythms of brass band powerhouses like “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Palm Court Strut”! \n“Some 1500 miles from New Orleans and the Mardi Gras\, and what do you think? It’s bouncing around the Mississippi River up here close to the Northern Star.” — Leigh Kamman\, The Jazz Image \n“The performers are virtuosi and flawlessly replicate the sound of classic New Orleans… The concert was wonderful and demonstrates the continued vitality of this sort of music.” — John Beckmann\, Prairie Uprising

SUMMARY:Django Festival Allstars featuring Special Guest Veronica Swift
DESCRIPTION:Django Reinhardt’s unmistakable cool and jumping joie de vivre have made him an icon. Many guitar luminaries cite his inspiration\, including guitar greats Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton. Moreover\, Jimi Hendrix named his Band of Gypsys in tribute to Reinhardt. Willie Nelson adopted his influence in playing country swing. \nThe star musicians of the Django Festival Allstars have grown into a brilliantly cohesive group. They have performed at top concert halls and festivals to standing ovations. Also\, they have wowed audiences in venues across North America. \nThe group’s music transports listeners to Paris in the 1920s and ’30s. Here\, the All-stars bring Reinhardt’s music into the 21st century. They honor traditions and standards while adding their own interpretations\, arrangements\, and original compositions. They swing like crazy and will break your heart with a ballad. \nLed for years by guitar master Dorado Schmitt\, the Allstars are now fronted by Dorado’s son\, Samson. Samson has been playing professionally since he was twelve years old and has several recordings to his credit. Flanked by the other superb musicians in this group\, the future of Django’s music is in good hands indeed! \nVeronica Swift has made her mark on the international jazz scene as one of the star vocalists of her era. Now\, Swift expands her style\, establishing herself as a skilled rock and soul singer as well as a dynamic performer. SUMMARY:Joshua Redman Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists working today. Joshua was born in Berkeley\, California\, and he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of music (jazz\, classical\, rock\, soul\, Indian\, Indonesian\, Middle-Eastern\, African). Also\, a wide range of instruments (recorder\, piano\, guitar\, gatham\, gamelan). Then\, Redman began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to the tenor saxophone one year later. \nJohn Coltrane\, Ornette Coleman\, Cannonball Adderley and his father\, Dewey Redman influenced Redman early on. Also\, The Beatles\, Aretha Franklin\, the Temptations\, Earth\, Wind and Fire\, Prince\, The Police and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music. Joshua loved playing saxophone and was a member of the award-winning Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble and Combo from 1983-86. However\, he always put academics first\, and he never seriously considered becoming a professional musician. \nIn 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude\, with a B.A. in Social Studies. He had already been accepted by Yale Law School\, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. Then\, Redman won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition\, propelling him to near-certain stardom. \nOver the past three decades\, the saxophonist\, composer\, and bandleader has consistently demonstrated how to honor music’s verities while expanding its reach in contemporary settings. Redman’s latest\, 2025’s Words Fall Short\, is an organic next step. Thus\, inspiring new collaborators bring this new collection of previously unheard originals to life.

SUMMARY:Sam Grisman Project
DESCRIPTION:A Note From Sam: “The music that my father David Grisman and his close friend\, Jerry Garcia\, made in the early 1990s (in the house that I grew up in) is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded\, it also triggers my oldest and fondest musical memories. What I find most inspiring about this material is their camaraderie. Their love and joy for the music simply oozes out of each recording. It is also impressive how deeply they get beneath their favorite songs. Whether they are originals\, covers\, or traditional/old-time tunes\, the material was curated expertly. \n“My goal in starting Sam Grisman Project is to build a platform for my friends and me to showcase our genuine passion and appreciation for the legacy of Dawg and Jerry’s music. By playing some of their beloved repertoires and sharing the original music that our own collective has to offer\, we will also show the impact that this music has had on our own individual musical voices. Ultimately\, there is nothing that makes me happier than playing great songs with my best friends. My hope is to share that happiness with audiences all over!”

SUMMARY:Brandee Younger at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Brandee Younger is revolutionizing the harp’s role in modern music. She has worked relentlessly over the past fifteen years to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. In 2022\, she made history. Then\, she became the first Black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. That same year\, she also earned an NAACP Image Award nomination. Later\, she won the 2024 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album for her latest\, Brand New Life. Also ever-expanding as an artist\, she has worked with Common\, Lauryn Hill\, John Legend\, Pharoah Sanders and Christian McBride. \nHer original composition “Hortense” was featured in the Netflix concert-documentary\, Beyoncé: Homecoming. Also\, Brandee performed her original music for Quincy Jones and Steve McQueens’ “Soundtrack of America”. Here\, Brandee stands on the shoulders of the very women who ushered in the harp as a clear and distinct voice in jazz & popular styles. These include Detroit natives Dorothy Ashby & Alice Coltrane. \nHer latest album\, Brand New Life\, builds on her already rich oeuvre\, and cements the harp’s place in popular culture. As the title of the album suggests\, Brand New Life is about forging new paths–artistic\, personal\, political\, and spiritual. Younger imbues her music with a sense of purpose and respect of legacy. There\, she creates a larger platform for the harp to reach newer and wider audiences than ever before. Additionally\, Younger serves on the faculty at New York University\, Steinhardt School and The New School College of Performing Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Effortless. Spontaneous. Inimitable. The convergence of two of jazz’s most legendary forces of nature. \nMoreover\, their virtuosic interpretations traverse the musical spectrum. For example\, they draw on the canons of luminary composers: Ellington\, Porter\, Sondheim\, LeGrand\, Simon\, and others. Here\, they range from intimate ballads to soulful grooves\, delivered with daring expression born of their musical chemistry. \nEach performance is a sublime tour-de-force. \n2017 NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater is a restless explorer. Moreover\, she has collaborated with master musicians of Mali\, interpreted the cabaret of Kurt Weill and embraced the hard bop of Horace Silver. Here\, she is joined by Grammy-winning pianist Bill Charlap for these intimate duo performances featuring jazz classics and songbook standards. \nDee Dee Bridgewater first gained recognition in the early 1970s with the great Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Since then\, she has thrived wherever she’s landed. On Broadway\, she earned a Tony Award for her work in the original production of The Wiz. Then in Paris\, she spent more than a decade as France’s greatest champion of jazz. \nPianist Bill Charlap is a consummate soloist and bandleader. Additionally\, he is known for work with Tony Bennett\, Phil Woods\, Barbra Streisand\, and his own superb trio. SUMMARY:Kenny Garrett at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Kenny Garrett’s latest release\, 2021’s Sounds from the Ancestors\, is a multi-faceted album. The music\, however\, doesn’t lodge inside the tight confines of the jazz idiom. Here\, this is not surprising: the alto saxophonist and composer acknowledges Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye as significant touchstones. Miles Davis’ seminal LP\, On the Corner\, subverted its main guiding lights – James Brown\, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. Then\, Davis crafted his own unique\, polyrhythmic\, groove-laden\, improv-heavy universe. Thus\, Sounds from the Ancestors occupies its own space with intellectual clarity\, sonic ingenuity and emotional heft. \n“The concept initially was about trying to get some of the musical sounds that I remembered as a kid growing up. Sounds that lift your spirit\, like John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme”\, Aretha Franklin’s “Amazing Grace”\, Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”. And the spiritual side of the church\,” Garrett explains. “When I started to think about them\, I realized it was the spirit from my ancestors.” \nIndeed\, Sounds from the Ancestors reflects the rich jazz\, R&B\, and gospel history of his hometown of Detroit. More important though\, it also reverberates with a modern cosmopolitan vibrancy. Notably the inclusion of music coming out of France\, Cuba\, Nigeria\, and Guadeloupe.

DESCRIPTION:New York Times described Larry Goldings\, Peter Bernstein\, and Bill Stewart as “the best organ trio of the last decade.” The trio\, which has played together for over thirty years\, is recognized for charting new ground. Here\, they do this through synergistic playing and thoughtful music. Moreover\, they display their distinctive sound on over a dozen recordings. Additionally\, they sound at home whether exploring the depths of jazz standards or playing their own original compositions. \nOf 2018’s Toy Tunes\, Downbeat said\, “The whole album subtly subverts organ-trio cliches\, offering not chicken-shack party stomps but instead some hip after-hours atmospherics”. \nLarry Goldings is hailed worldwide for his signature Hammond organ style and versatility on many keyboards. Moreover\, he has traversed not only the wide spectrum of jazz where he is perhaps best known\, but also the worlds of funk\, pop\, and electronic music. For example\, Goldings has worked closely with John Scofield\, Michael Brecker\, Jim Hall\, Maceo Parker\, and Madeleine Peyroux. Also\, Pat Metheny\, James Taylor\, and John Mayer. Jazz guitarist \nPeter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. There\, he contributed to over 200 recordings. As a leader\, Peter released twelve albums and a DVD. Further\, Bernstein was discovered by alto saxophone legend Lou Donaldson and was a crucial part of his final great band. \nDrummer/composer Bill Stewart made his name as the rhythmic force behind guitarist John Scofield. Now\, he is one of the most sought-after jazz drummers in the world. Also\, Stewart has toured extensively with Pat Metheny\, Maceo Parker\, Joe Lovano\, Joshua Redman\, Charlie Haden\, Joe Henderson and more.

SUMMARY:Moore By Four at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Moore By Four quickly established themselves as a fixture on the Twin Cities music scene upon their 1986 inception. There\, they started out at Ruby’s Cabaret in Minneapolis. The group performed sold-out concerts at the Guthrie and Fitzgerald Theaters and went on to tour Europe and Japan. Then\, they shared concert billing with Harry Connick\, Jr.\, Joe Williams\, Carmen McRae\, Sarah Vaughan and Dizzy Gillespie. Further\, they performed at concert halls and jazz festivals around the world. They’ve sung for the U.S. Olympic Committee\, the Super Bowl\, the Minnesota Twins\, Vikings and Timberwolves. Also\, former President and Mrs. Clinton\, Mikhail and Raisa Gorbachev\, Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel\, the King and Queen of Sweden. Additionally\, they’ve played countless special events\, benefits\, corporate functions\, colleges and universities\, concert halls and festivals in the U.S.\, Europe and Japan. \nThe harmonies put forth by the four vocalists immediately invoke thoughts of Manhattan Transfer. They do this with their precise vocal control and polish\, pulsating rhythms and innovative arrangements. However\, the individuals’ grounding in gospel\, jazz\, pop and theater provides a far broader range to the group’s musical offerings. \nThe group’s repertoire\, arranged by Director Sanford Moore\, originally specialized in music from the swing era. Moreover\, it has broadened to also include contemporary jazz\, original compositions and new arrangements of great standards. They pull tunes from Broadway\, Hollywood and the Cotton Club period. Then\, they perform these songs in what has become known as the signature style of Moore By Four.

SUMMARY:Keb' Mo'
DESCRIPTION:It’s a little over 2\,000 miles from Compton to Nashville. Drop the needle on Keb’ Mo’s latest album\, 2022’s Good To Be\, and you can make the trip in under four minutes. \n“I’ve lived in Nashville for the last eleven years\,” says Keb’\, “but Compton has always been my home. Finding a way to connect those two places on this album was a powerful thing for me. It felt like something I needed to do.” \nGood To Be is a celebration of roots and resilience\, of growth and gratitude\, of hope and memory. Here\, the songs draw on country\, soul\, and blues to forge a sound that transcends genre and geography. Then\, he weaves together past and present into a heartwarming tapestry spanning more than forty years of sonic evolution. Though Keb’ worked with a wide variety of collaborators on the project\, it remains a deeply cohesive work. Additionally\, it is anchored by the five-time Grammy winner’s magnetic vocal delivery and relentless optimism. \n“I believe that music has the power to heal\,” Keb’ explains\, “and I wanted this album to make people feel good.” \nFor Keb’ Mo’\, that journey began nearly half a century ago. Then\, he landed his first major gig in Papa John Creach’s band at the age of twenty-one. Over the next twenty years\, Keb’ would go on to establish himself as a respected guitarist\, songwriter\, and arranger. Though he recorded a one-off album in 1980 under his birth name\, Kevin Moore\, it wasn’t until 1994 that he would introduce the world to Keb’ Mo’ with the release of his widely acclaimed self-titled debut. Critics quickly took note of Keb’s modern\, genre-bending take on old school sounds.

SUMMARY:Judith Hill at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Judith Hill has established herself as one of the most dynamic and versatile artists in music. Her breakout appearance on The Voice earned her a dedicated fan base. Also\, her collaborations with legends like Stevie Wonder\, Michael Jackson\, and Prince garnered critical acclaim. Her music effortlessly blends elements of soul\, funk\, R&B\, and pop\, creating a sound that is uniquely her own. \n‍Hill’s latest release\, 2024’s Letters From A Black Widow follows 2021’s Baby\, I’m Hollywood!. Baby offered a rowdy coming-of-age tale of a mixed-race child of bohemian California. However\, Letters from a Black Widow is a formidable battle cry – a soul/funk/gospel passion play. Further\, it is spectacularly written\, arranged\, and performed by Hill. \nHere\, Hill plays many of the instruments\, including electric guitar\, which she taught herself to play since her last album. This project\, though\, is not a strictly solo endeavor. It’s built on the unshakable musical foundation she has enjoyed for most of her life. Thus\, Hill’s band includes her parents\, bassist Robert “Peewee” Hill and keyboardist Michiko Hill. \nLetters presents a riveting story – from private pain to communal transcendence – becoming her most soul-baring work to date. Anyone who’s followed Judith Hill’s story will recognize Letters from a Black Widow as one jaw-dropper of an album title. The tabloid-coined phrase “Black Widow” arose after the overdose deaths of her two star-making collaborators\, Michael Jackson and Prince. It became a term of abuse that internet trolls hurled at the celebrated artist\, driving conspiracy theories and shame campaigns. Then\, Hill experienced trauma that nearly ended a career that includes a Grammy for her role in the documentary “20 Feet from Stardom.”

SUMMARY:Sarah Morris: Say Yes Album Release with Special Guest Molly Maher
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Morris has a habit of missing the forest. From the day the Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter picked up a guitar\, she’s been too busy crafting love letters to the details of the trees. Morris’ endearingly honest\, expertly penned songs encourage audiences to pull away from the big picture. Then\, we are invited to get caught up in the magic of our everyday minutia. Morris grants us permission to escape into stories at once hauntingly familiar and uniquely her own.  \n2023’s Here’s To You\, her fifth album of original material\, sees Morris shedding some country swagger. Thus\, this album favors a lusher\, more celestial sound. With layers of harmonies and synths orbiting her band’s guitar\, bass and drums\, Morris’ clarion voice shines brightly. Whether they’re celebration songs\, grief songs\, or gift songs\, you feel devotion to her craft in every line. Dave Franklin of The Big Takeover declared Here’s To You “a triumph. An album of space and restraint\, any note played\, every word uttered feels perfectly and purposely placed”.   \nIn addition to being a 2018 Kerrville New Folk winner\, she recently earned third place at the 2023 Songwriter Serenade. Also\, Morris was chosen as a finalist for Telluride Troubadour. Additionally\, she took second place at the 2016 MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Competition.  \nMorris is deeply committed to the Twin Cities’ life-giving music community. Here\, she hosts an online interview program called “Hey\, I Miss You” to amplify the work of her peers. As a writer\, lover\, mother\, and witness\, Morris invites us to join her in missing the forest for the trees. There\, her songs count and celebrate the glorious details of our messy\, magical\, everyday lives.

SUMMARY:Terence Blanchard feat. The E-Collective at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Eight Grammy Awards\nTwo Emmy Nominations\nTwo Oscar Nominations\n2024 NEA Jazz Master \nTerence Blanchard has been a consistent artistic force for making powerful musical statements concerning painful American tragedies – past and present. A true Renaissance man\, Blanchard stands tall as one of jazz’s most-esteemed trumpeters. Moreover\, he defies expectations by creating a spectrum of artistic pursuits. Boundary-breaking and genre-defying\, Blanchard is recognized globally as a dazzling soloist and a prolific composer. Additionally\, he has written for film\, television\, opera\, Broadway\, orchestras and for his own ensembles. In fact\, leading theater magazine TheaterMania recently cited Blanchard as “the most exciting American composer working in opera today.”  \nBlanchard is an eight-time Grammy winner and twice Oscar-nominated film composer. In 2022\, he became only the second African American composer to be nominated twice for an Oscar in the original score category. There\, he duplicated Quincy Jones’ feat from 1967’s In Cold Blood and 1985’s The Color Purple. Blanchard’s work has placed him at the forefront of giving voice to human rights\, civil rights\, and racial injustice. Further\, this includes the 2015 album Breathless\, an elegy for Eric Garner\, who was killed by police. Garner’s words\, “I can’t breathe\,” became a civil rights rallying cry.  \nBlanchard is also heralded as a two-time opera composer. His Fire Shut Up in My Bones premiered at the Metropolitan Opera to open their 2021-22 season. Here\, it became the first opera by an African American composer to premiere at the Met in its 138-year history. The recording of those performances received a Grammy award for Best Opera Recording. Furthermore\, The New York Times heralded Fire as “inspiring\,” “subtly powerful” and “a bold affecting adaptation of Charles Blow’s work.”

SUMMARY:Christian McBride & Brad Mehldau at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Two of the most respected artists in contemporary jazz join forces in this duo. Brad Mehldau is hailed as “one of modern jazz’s most innovative musicians” by Glide Magazine. Christian McBride says\, “Brad is justifiably revered as one of the greatest pianists of all time. I’m very proud to have been friends and cohorts with him for almost 35 years. He was one of the first people I met when I moved to NYC in 1989\, and it continues to be an uplifting experience every time we play together.”  \nNamed “one of our greatest living pianists” by NPR\, Brad Mehldau says\, “It is a dream come true to play with Christian in this duo setting. Playing with Christian\, especially in this configuration\, is both joyful and daunting all at once. His level of sophistication and swing\, of emotional power and grace\, is unsurpassed – not in the least on what he has achieved on his instrument\, but also as one of our strongest voices in the music more generally\, at the top of his game. I’m so honored to be on stage with him.”  \nThis long-term friendship and musical camaraderie has led to various collaborations through the years. These include albums MoodSwing (1994)\, RoundAgain (2020)\, and LongGone (2023) with Joshua Redman and Brian Blade. Also\, trio tour dates with drummer Marcus Gilmore. Further\, a recent duo performance at the Big Ears Festival that had the crowd utterly captivated.

SUMMARY:Brad Mehldau SOLO at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano\, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path. Here\, he embodies the essence of jazz exploration\, classical romanticism and pop allure. Mehldau has garnered critical acclaim as a bandleader\, and major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny\, Renee Fleming\, and Joshua Redman. Furthermore\, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. His forays into melding musical idioms have seen brilliant reworkings of songs by contemporary songwriters. He covers The Beatles\, Cole Porter\, Radiohead\, Paul Simon\, Gershwin and Nick Drake\, among others. Also\, he has earned recognition for the ever-evolving breadth of his own significant catalogue of original compositions. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training\, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years”. (The New York Times) \nMehldau’s musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser. He cherishes the surprise and wonder occurring from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly\, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music\, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing\, the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays\, he listens to how ideas unwind\, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch\, whether it expresses itself in a beginning\, an end\, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau’s personality—the improviser and the formalist—play off each other. Thus\, the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

SUMMARY:Southside Aces: A Night in New Orleans at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Southside Aces are celebrating twenty years performing the repertoire of the Jazz Age greats and beyond. From the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton to the world-changing joys of Louis Armstrong. The barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall to the Crescent City rhythms of rock and roll pioneer Fats Domino. Treat yourself to a century’s worth of New Orleans jazz. \nThe band first began as the brainchild of clarinetist Tony Balluff and sousaphone player Erik Jacobson. Then\, their whispers and rumors materialized in Tony’s foyer in South Minneapolis\, in August 2003. Since their first gig on a flatbed truck in Apple Valley\, the Aces have released eight albums. Their most recent — 2022’s Minneapolis Bump — features fifteen original songs inspired by the Jazz Age. \nIn New Orleans\, the jazz tradition thrives off a wide array of styles. Moreover\, their roll call includes the names of Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Hoagy Carmichael\, Duke Ellington\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Plus\, Crescent City classics like “Bourbon Street Parade”\, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”\, and “St. James Infirmary”. And let’s not forget the funky rhythms of brass band powerhouses like “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Palm Court Strut”! \nThe Southside Aces have performed at the Dakota\, Icehouse\, Crooners Supper Club\, Vieux Carre and Twin Cities Jazz Fest. They’ve also played Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival and Minnesota Orchestra Sommerfest\, to name a few. They’ve driven dancers crazy at national dance competitions and led second line parades through the streets of the Twin Cities. Further\, they’ve played events in Denver\, Omaha\, Chicago\, Des Moines\, and all across the great state of Minnesota.
