This Just In is Jazz88’s weekly celebration of new releases. It hits the airwaves every Friday at Noon and this week we are diving into Lauren Falls‘ new album A Little Louder Now. Lauren is a bass player/composer who spent some time out in New York before returning to her hometown of Toronto. The release features seven of Falls’ composition plus a cover of Vincent Youmans “I Want to Be Happy”.
I was drawn to the record because the compositions are just beautiful. The songs sound very modern while also sounding like they’ve been around for decades. The group reads down the melodies with a sensitivity and grace to the material that is so often lacking in modern jazz performance. Throughout the album Lauren Falls displays her skills as a masterful bassist, but it’s always in the service of the song, never a showy affair. During today’s This Just In we’ll listen to a couple tracks from the album while also covering new releases from Karla Harris and Joe Alterman, Samara Joy, Gregory Tardy and more. Check the show out at Noon or on-demand here.
