D’Rivera, McBride among 2023 Jazz Fest headliners

Twin Cities Jazz Fest headliners 2023

Some high-profile spots on the Jazz88 Mainstage at the 2023 Twin Cities Jazz Festival now have equally high-profile artists booked.  The Festival’s outgoing Executive Director Steve Heckler made the first wave of artist announcements on Jazz88 Tuesday morning, Jan. 17, for the 24th edition of the Fest:

After having to cancel prior bookings due to coronavirus-related cancellations, the Festival will welcome renowned Cuban-American saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Paquito D’Rivera to the Jazz88 Mainstage at Mears Park, Friday night, June 23.  He’ll appear with his Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience.  Earlier that night on the same stage, it’s composer, saxophonist, vocalist and bandleader Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Quartet.

Saturday night’s Jazz88 Mainstage closing act will be another Covid-deferred performance: bassist-composer-bandleader-educator-radio host Christian McBride will appear.  Earlier June 24 on that stage, the Mears Park crowd will be treated to a performance by hometown heroes Davina & The Vagabonds.

The full press release from the Twin Cities Jazz Festival is here.  These bookings are subject to change.  More announcements for the stages and the schedule of shows in the 20+ satellite venues around St. Paul are forthcoming this spring.
