Preparing for our move back to Minneapolis North High means we won’t be able to hang with you at the State Fair this year, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have hot tips on music happenings at the Great Minnesota Get-Together! Below, read what Jazz88’s Sean McPherson is looking forward to.
When I go to the Fair, I like to get some jazz between my cheese curds! Maybe you do, too. Here are a few jazz-centric events I’d recommend checking out when you visit the Fair:
Pick #1: Thursday, August 22 and Friday, August 23 at the Schell’s Stage
8-9:30 p.m. both nights
Tina Schlieske and Friends
https://www.mnstatefair.org/schedule/tina-schlieske-and-friends/
I imagine Tina will be covering many genres when she steps onto the Schell’s Stage, but with her recent release, The Good Life, I believe some jazz will make its way into the mix. But honestly, I’d listen to Tina sing in any genre. She can deliver a song!
Pick #2: Monday, August 26 and Tuesday, August 27 at the Schell’s Stage
8-9:30 p.m. both nights
LA Buckner and BiG HOMiE
https://www.mnstatefair.org/schedule/la-buckner-and-big-homie/
I already know that LA Buckner and BiG HOMiE are going to deliver the goods for the State Fair. This group knows how to meet these moments with special guests, extra performers, and high-octane soloists. Get ready for some of the best players in Minnesota to wow the State Fair crowd.
Pick #3: Wednesday, August 28 and Thursday, August 29th at the International Bazaar Stage
10:45 – 11:30 a.m. / 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. / 1:15 – 2:00 p.m. both days
McNasty Brass Band
https://www.mnstatefair.org/schedule/mcnasty-brass-band/
I love the McNasty Brass Band year ’round, but they excel in an outdoor setting. This group has a lot of great brass and woodwind players coalescing around the goal of body-moving music full of horn pyrotechnics. Nothing better to me than watching this band at the Bazaar while sucking down a Mediterranean Lemonade from Holy Land. – Sean McPherson
