Warren Wolf is celebrating a birthday today and beyond being one of the most talented musicians working today, he is also a true ambassador for his fellow vibraphone players. His latest record is called History of the Vibraphone and the entire record celebrates songs either penned by or made famous by vibraphone players. It was also inspiring to see the final paragraph of his liner notes which gave shoutouts to 32 fellow vibraphone players. That type of camaraderie is rare to see and it increased my already high opinion of Wolf. The record itself is a joy and truly sounds like a love letter to the vibraphone and all it offers. We’ve been featuring the rendition of “Midnight Sun” but it’s a nice release front to back. I had the joy of seeing Warren Wolf live when he was in town to play with Cecile McLorin Salvant over at the Walker Art Center for her new project Ogresse. Every player on stage was an elite player. Even in that ensemble Wolf and his command of his instrument stood out. Happy birthday to you Warren Wolf, thank you for the great music and we can’t wait to see what’s next from you!
