There are few things in the music world as joyous as a well-delivered shuffle. A shuffle is a rhythmic feel with swung eighth-notes and a strong and persistent backbeat. In my opinion, a blues shuffle divides the pros from the amateurs in most settings. When a band can really cook over a shuffle beat the tune will carry the rhythmic adventurousness of swing and the authoritative groove of a funk. In short: shuffles are magical.
The newly formed group Ski Club has given us magic on their new song “Swing Tune.” A great shuffle relies upon the propulsion of a great rhythm section and in drummer Matthew Mwangi and bassist Tony Sorini they have just that. Jack Peterson handles the vocals and guitar and Jordan Hedlund adds the extra sauce with his organ work. Try to not crack a smile while this tune is blasting out of your speakers.
Ski Club is a group of young players who cut their teeth at the “Greatest Jam on Earth” that happens every Tuesday at the Blues Saloon in Saint Paul, and they sound like a group that would blow the doors off most any jam situation. Something about the cauldron of feels, repertoire and egos that have to be navigated to keep a jam on the right path has given this group of young players the sound and savvy of seasoned veterans. We’re looking forward to more Ski Club, who seem to be gathering supporters all over the blues scene in town including from our own Lady Luca, Dylan Salfer, Annie Mack and more.
