Hot New Local Single: The Riffin’ Trio

Hot New Riffin Trio Brightside
There’s some tangible enthusiasm heating up around town for The Riffin’ Trio. The group just celebrated the release of Introducing the Riffin’ Trio with a show at the Turf Club on August 15th. Now the group is ready to settle into their monthly residency at Dusty’s in Northeast (catch them every 4th Sunday from 5-8p). Now that the EP is out, I wanted to go deeper into their catalog.
The song “Brightside Too” brings the Riffin’ Trio into mellower territory and it was nice to hear that side of the group. I hear a bunch of Joe Lovano in what Nelson Devereaux is bringing on the saxophone and Jake Hanson works his volume knob to bring in the slight country and western tinge that the song calls for. When bassist Ted Olsen connects with guitarist Jake Hanson for a hypnotizing ostinato, they establish that the world of groove is not strictly the domain of the drums. The group thrives on their supportive, song-first performances and it’s great to hear them to bring that approach to slower songs in the catalog. Here’s to hoping there’s more to come from the Riffin’ Trio!
