Danny Sigelman’s State Fair Picks:
I can’t think of a better way to kick off the Fair this year than with one of the Twin Cities’ finest groups, Davina and the Vagabonds August 21 and 22nd at the Bandshell stage. The consummate piano player and singer, Davina Sowers has carved out her own niche and following among the local jazz and theater scene and it’s a gift to see her and her group live at the Fair. Bring your dancing shoes!
Legendary American Musical Treasures, Los Lobos will be performing two nights at the Fair this year! Monday and Tuesday, August 25 and 26 at the Bandshell stage is the place to be to take in the propulsive Roots Americana, R&B and Rock and Roll grooves of one of the finest groups from Los Angeles who have been at it for 50+ years of entertaining all over the world.
Singer/Songwriter Mary Bue is from Northern Minnesota and a long time main stay on the Twin Cities Music Scene. She’s performing 3 sets Friday and Saturday, August 29 and 30 at the West End Market Stage, starting at 4pm.
Johnny’s One VERY IMPORTANT Pick:
We promise you will know at least one if not MORE of these classic bands songs!
Happy Together Tour 2025 includes The Turtles, Jay and the Americans, Little Anthony, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Vogues and The Cowsills. Johnny played me a song from each and I knew them all! A hidden gem of the Grandstand happening on Monday, August 25 at 7pm.
Paige’s Picks for International Flavor Music:
First off, Paige agrees with Danny that LOS LOBOS should not be missed. She has a lot of volunteering she is doing with Jazz88 and the Weavers Guild of MN and she may come an extra day to the fair just to catch this amazing band.
Paige LOVES music from around the world from High Life to Brazilian Samba and she like to go home before dark when she goes to the fair. Focusing on FREE concerts DURING THE DAY she focused in on the Summit Stage at the Bazaar:
Playing during the day on Saturday and Sunday, August 23 and 24, catch Jack Brass Band starting at 1045am and playing hour sets till 2pm. This group played one of our JazzClectic shows two years ago and was a major hit.
On Wednesday and Thursday, August 27 and 28, stop by the Summit Stage ANYTIME as Paige recommends both groups, Cafe Accordion Orchestra AND Gizzae. Dan Newton taught Paige’s Mom how to play accordion and his group is an enjoyable way to take a moment at the fair and enjoy the music. Gizzae is a Chicago based reggae band that Paige heard strains of last year and still wishes she would have stopped.
Here at Jazz88 we love marimba. We love playing percussion led music on air and we like supporting students. It is par4t of our mission. So, when you go get your Urban Hmong Kitchen Bao Bun on Sunday and Monday, August 31 or September 1 stay while to hear BATO BATO! the Breck school’s dozen marimba band supported by a plethora of percussion. They start at 1045am and play with breaks until 2pm.
