The Atlantis Quartet have been stalwarts of the Twin Cities modern jazz scene for nearly twenty years. The ensemble includes saxophonist Brandon Wozniak, guitarist Zacc Harris, bassist Chris Bates, and drummer Pete Hennig. The group started out as a kind of composing collective that met on a weekly basis. Over the years they evolved a distinctive approach, played several major jazz festivals, and on October 24th they are releasing their sixth album, Live at Berlin.
This week’s Hot New Local Single is the album’s opening cut, “Evasive Maneuvers.” It’s a composition by guitarist Zacc Harris. The comfort that the members of the group have with each other is immediately evident in the relaxed yet precise rhythmic vamp in the opening bars of the composition. Brandon Wozniak takes a well-paced and logical solo with excellent comping from his bandmates. Everyone except the drums and the guitar drops out for the next solo and you can feel the excitement of the audience grow as guitarist Zacc Harris and drummer Pete Hennig spur each other on. When all four musicians return to recap the theme, you are brought back home with a fun and edgy performance.
The Atlantis Quartet return to Berlin Friday, October 24th and Saturday, October 25th to celebrate the release of the new album.
