This week’s Hot New Local Single is from the group Duo CORDA, comprised of guitarist Pavel Jany and cellist Jacqueline Ultan.
Ultan is a Yale-educated musician who teaches music at MacPhail and incorporates her cello into a wide range of musical settings, including projects like Saltee that feature her cello in combination with beatbox and bassoon, a Beatles Tribute Band called “The Shabby Road Orchestra”, and tours with numerous pop, rock and new music artists as well. As you can hear on this new collaboration with guitarist Pavel Jany, she is an adept interpreter of jazz and bossa nova music as well, and her singing cello tone and eloquent phrasing shine on Jobim’s “Chovendo No Roseria,” a song known in English as “Double Rainbow.”
Pavel Jany is also a musician with wide-ranging musical interests. He has been featured on Jazz88 previously in projects like the Brazilian jazz group, Ticket To Brasil, the instrumental trio, Talking Strings, and modern jazz group, World Jazz Collegium. Jany incorporates a wealth of diverse musical influences into his performances and compositions, including classical, music of his native Czechoslovakia, Brazilian sounds, and jazz/fusion innovators like Chick Corea, Ralph Towner, and Pat Metheney.
Duo Corda released an eponymous album on February 5th. You can learn more about the group here.
