Jazz88 favourites, Society of Chemists are greeting Spring and jazz fans all over the Twin Cities with another luscious single from the group’s always buzzing studio laboratory.
The piece, “Western Carol” was composed by chief Chemist, Stephanie Wieseler, “I wrote this on piano in late December of 2022. I was inspired by the cozy evening darkness around me and a previous vacation to the national parks within Moab, Utah (Arches, Canyonlands).”
The piece works as an impressionistic reflection of her experience; Weisler conjures cinematic and voluminous saxophone melodies amid the piano’s foundational presence and enveloping cymbal washes throughout.
She describes the inspiration, “The spacious grandeur of the west and the splendor of solitude. The vastness of our national parks and their quiet beauty.”
