The South Side Aces have established themselves as the first name in traditional jazz in the Twin Cities. For their sixth album, they focus on the music of pioneering clarinetist and soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet, The disc includes music that Bechet recorded between 1923 and 1959. It’s called Les Oignons. This week’s Hot New Local Single is the title track.
“Les Oignons” is a creole song that Bechet recorded with French clarinetist Claude Luter in the 1950s. The South Side Aces performance features clarinetist Tony Balluff, trumpeter Dan Eikmeyer, trombonist Eric Johnson, tuba player Eric Jacobson, banjoist Robert Bell, and drummer Dave Michael.
If you want to catch the band playing Bechet’s music live, you can check them out at Jazz Age Rumpus V on Sunday, March 22nd at the Hook and Ladder.
