Cellist Stephen Marotto is a passionate advocate for contemporary music and plays regularly with groups such as Sound Icon, Callithumpian Consort, and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. He has a wide range of musical interest that include contemporary chamber music, improvisatory music, and electroacoustic music. Stephen can be heard as a featured artist on Mode Records. In his spare time, Stephen is an avid hiker and outdoorsman.
Willful Devices is a collaboration between composer/improviser Scott L. Miller and performer/improviser Pat O’Keefe. Despite their best efforts, the devices they make music with are never fully under their control—they accept and celebrate this unpredictability as a potential source of unimagined sonic discovery. Scott and Pat’s musical relationship began in 2003 when Scott was commissioned by the new music ensemble Zeitgeist (of which Pat is a member) to create an evening-length work, Shape Shifting. Their personal and artistic sensibilities clicked, and they began the journey that would lead to what is today Willful Devices.
