Music is the ultimate conjurer of emotions. The sounds of “Fireflies” off of L.A. Buckner and BiG HOMiE’s forthcoming record “Norfside” conjures a lifetime of triumph into three and a half minutes of music like the groove downed three espressos before the second measure and as the group navigates the various sections there is a palpable bulletproof pride in what they are delivering. Whether it is keyboardist and author of the tune, David Smith, sliding his fingers down his keyboard or bassist Ethan Yeshaya peppering in Gold-medal-level bass fills, there’s a fearless confidence in the ensemble that is intoxicating.
The Minneapolis Sound can never be safe; the Minneapolis sound is making a keyboard do the work of a horn section, making the horn section do the work of a choir and making the groove do the work of a sermon. It’s risky, it’s edgy and it’s exhilarating. So no, the future of the Minneapolis Sound isn’t safe with L.A. Buckner. It shouldn’t be. But it’s in great hands.
